can we use a class 10 SD card for the G1? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,
Can anyone answer this for me? I've asked all around and searched. No Luck.
Will the G1 support a Class 10 SDHC carD?

What card are you planning to use?
I never heard of a class 10 card lol .

do you mean a 10 gb than yes the g1 can support up to a 16gb card

http://www.dpreview.com/news/0905/09052102panasonicclass10sdhc.asp quick to not good... they have class 10 cards, but thats always a good question

No i mean Class 10 cards.
You can buy it here.

Don't know if it's compatible though.
Wondering if anyone has tried.

since they came out in may chances are extemely slim that they are compatible with hardware that came out months before it, so i am gonna say doubtful that you will find any hardware to support it yet

well it is a sdcard but not a micro, i din't even catch that, i am really sleepy though

The phone should still recognize it. I know my camera that came out a year before hand recognizes them... its just a dinky D60...

if you have a hammer, then it will.

I was talking about a class 10 micro not the one he posted...

Panasonic just made the first class 10 SD card a few months ago. I'm not saying it's impossible there's a class 10 microsd out there but I've never seen one, but assuming there is, I don't see why it wouldn't work, although I don't know if it would get the true read/write speeds that it's capable of.

im sure they mean when one becomes available? i tryed to ask a similar question to the oha they never replied it was about support for sdxc in android

http://www.sdcard.org/developers/tech/sdcard/
the class 10 spec is not even official......
once it becomes official (if it does) it will still take time for this to come to microsd's

Legit Class 10 SDHC Cards are out:

You are forgetting the power of duct tape!

good ol' duct tape, my most reliable friend how i think that you are the best invention in the world. maybe some old school hardware hacker could make an reverse adapter for the g1 so it can use full size sdcards. would be kinda ass backwards and defeat the point of it being micro but the internet cred for making it work, priceless
btw holy ****, there are 2tb sdcards WOW

16GB Micro SDHC work with my Kaiser?

just wondering if it will, as there are some for £55 and all my mp3s on here will be ace!
read that it only takes 8GB?
thanks
in theory it should work since it handles any microsdhc card up to 32gb.it hasn't been tested for any cards over 8gb since none are buyable yet.
And those new 16GB micro sd cards should have been for sale somewhere in June or July.
But of course its August now and still no sign of them...
usually waiting longer is better so the products are perfected more and tested thoroughly.i don't think any of us want a card that goes totally corrupted within the first 6 months of usage
Well the second somebody purchases a 16G7 micro sd card plz do tel how it feels and of course..DOES IT WORK.
We are able to, most likely able to use up to 32gb...so 16 should work like a charm...for me the 8 gig doesn't seem like enough and I don't wanna ever buy another card again for my kaiser and future devices...I got my 2gig micro sd card for $10 on craigslist brand new..and it came with a very sick tool...a micro sd usb adapter..one of the best accessories for the kaiser or any micro sd ppc device. I use it all the time and every comp has a usb slot so its compatable with everything, its great for swapping cabs and documents quick.
l...So anyway plz whoever gets over an 8 gig sdhc card like a 16g plz tell us if it works and how fast it transfers files and all that.

*Good* Class 6 MicroSD cards

Hey guys,
I've been having a great deal of trouble with my cheap Transcend 8gb class 6 card . . . spontaneous unmounts, lots of finicky behavior all around. Having the apps on the SD means the phone crashes, and the app permissions get borked to hell.
I've heard these are not very good cards (you get what you pay for in this case) and are known to have problems with the G1 . . . or the G1 is known to have problems with them. Either way, perhaps some of you can help me:
-Are the Transcends indeed "problem cards?"
-Has anyone had one, gotten fed up with the crashing, replaced it, and is in good working order?
-If that's the case, what are some known good cards I can get to replace it?
Thanks!
they are not problematic, they are just not compatible enough! Every device has issues with every other sd card no matter what. I been buying sd cards and I have had problems with these since the day they were born.
In my opinion, transcend are one of the more compatible sd cards. Funny thing is I use a sandisk on my phone and I always had issues with sandisks before on other devices.
First things first, Transcend are by no means a 'cheap brand'. They actually make some of the more expensive memory cards you can buy, and they are very good. My memory card is a Transcend, an 8GB Class 6 like yours.
The difference is that my one has never failed me. It's actually very fast. Furthermore, Transcend are known for making good memory cards. Maybe you just got unlucky with your one.
I ordered the A-Data class 6 to replace my class 4 sandisk based off raving reviews. I havent read much for negative reviews on the A-Data lineup, even though they are a smaller company
I had a transcend 8gb class 6 card that failed completely (can't even access from a PC). When it failed, and due to my apps to sc and other changes, my phone wouldn't boot without a card. I had to install the 128 mb card once I got home and re-update from scratch. When the transcend card worked, it was fast. I've used other cards of theirs in my cameras for a while now, and they've been very good. But this failure caused a bit of a headache for me. I'm at the point where if I see any problems with my sd card, I'll simply replace it to avoid worse problems. Wouldn't have helped in this case as I saw no signs before hand. If it means much, I'd try another transcend card again.
Sorry, didn't mean to bash Transcend undeservedly. So maybe it's just an issue particular to their cards and the G1?
Thread moved to Dream Q&A, please post in the correct place; not dev related.
i went through 2 4gb class 6 adata cards that wouldn't work at all after i partitioned them. phone would bootloop regardless of rom. it worked great if i left all fat32....very strange.
orange that should be a good card. if you have any way to put it into your computer and try to format it, via a usb conector ect. then give that a go. other wise it could be the rom your on, what type of rom are you using or is it stock?
Don't base your purchase decision on the Class classification. Sandisk's Class 2 cards have known to have stellar performances under ATTO.

Cyanogen Mod. Latest (4.2.12.2) but I've had this problem in previous versions. A friend's G1 has experienced similar problems with the same Transcend 8gb card, and I vaguely recall hearing warnings against using that brand w/ the G1, but perhaps I'm mistaken.
For now, I've deleted the EXT and swap partitions from the card and did a wipe so that all apps are running from internal memory. I haven't noticed any unmounts today, but last night the phone was unusable and this same sort of thing has happened before with the same card in both my original G1, and the warranty replacement (the warranty replacement was for an unrelated issue).

Class 10 sd cards

Does the G1 support class 10 sd cards?
Also, using a custom rom, can I partition the card so that a 32 gb sd cards works?

LOL.... I love these threads every few months.
The keyword you have missed OP, is the word micro. Micro carries a LOT of meaning.

Nobody really knows the answer to your question. I'm guessing mostly because the 32gb microSD cards are almost worth as much as the dang phone itself. In the meantime, you can buy one and try it....if it works let us know as well.
On every search that I ran on google everyone keeps saying that the G1 doesn't support them.
the g1 should work with all SDHC cards 4gb - 32gb when it comes out

You could always buy one and see for yourself, I have not heard someone do it yet, but maybe you can and report back to us what you find out
Remember that sdcard and micro sdcard are DIFFERENT...
I ordered one for my hero, if it doesn't work, I'll put it in my camera. It's backordered at the moment... I'll update. I'm pretty sure that the G1 and Hero have the same SD compatibility (2.0) and I think that the class 10 is SD 3.0... so I have doubts
well, i have a class 10 16gb MicroSD Card in my Leo and it's working fine.
Also i have 2 more 16Gb cards (1 x Class 4 and 1 x Class 2), between the Class 2 and Class 4 i don't notice the speed difference when playing around on the phone but i do indeed notice the improvement in speed when using the class 10 one, so my guess is Class 10 will most likely work fine in all HTC phones using that slot form.

32 GB Micro SDHC card?

Planning on picking up a 32GB micro SDHC card, to replace my current 8GB card, within the next two days.
Shooting for at least a class 4, which I will likely end up with, really don't feel like paying extra for a class 6 or 10 at the moment, especially for what I use it for (Music, Apps, Docs, Pics).
Just want to see if anyone else is rocking one yet, and if so which brand?
Thanks
ADATA 32GB Micro SDHC Flash Card with Adapter Model AUSDH32GCL10-RA1
Bought it on newegg for $70 and its a class 10. so far i am happy with it
I have a Kingston 16 GB class 4 in my Vivid. It works great for me, and was noticeably quicker loading the gallery and saving pictures on my old HTC Evo then the standard 8 GB class 2. I recall seeing some people having problems with class 6 & 10 in some phones, but don't remember the details.
32GB class 4 San disk work fine, currently i have no idea to fill it up with
Why stop at 32gb? SanDisk makes a 64GB micro SD card that is compatible... I'm using it right now, unfortunately I can't post the pic from the phone though... Google it also, if you order one, Google a discount code for 10% off and that'll cover most of shipping.

Great to hear, can we just dismount and use adapters to plug into a pc to transfer wiles at will? Does the formatting affect this ability?
I would do this quite a bit with my sdhc card.

i dont think 5x the cost for double the capacity is worth it
Well, my 32Gb sd card came in today, so I should go pick it up later today.
Are we given the option to format the card once placed into our phone?
...I have been looking around but haven't seen anything about it so fare...on HTC's site, the manual, etc...
Thanks
woa, what about class 10 not working? I have a class 10 8gb card that im planning on using (got it for like 10 bucks online 2 years ago). I really hope it works fine...phone comes tomorrow so lets see.
What I find amusing is that the Vivid is listed as having 16GB of memory. After OS install and bloatware that drops it to 8.83? wtf is that. Unless boot/recovery/radio all share which is highly doubtful and totally insecure
Class 10 doesn't necessarily mean faster speeds. It does mean faster speeds if you are transferring 8 gigs of music for example. But when it is in the phone, the random read/write speeds are actually worse than class 4. There is a thread on here somewhere about it.
...so how do we go about formatting them for our phone, or is it automatic?
(new to Android)
I grabbed a 32GB Class 10 on Black Friday for $40.

It is automatic. The SD card probably comes preformatted with FAT32, which Android accepts. It'll do the folder architecture automatically.

[Q] Micro SDHC compatibility...

dont have the phone yet, going to get the tmobile one. Was wondering if the following microSDHC would work with it. Or should i get non HC cards?

Of course it will work, but be careful with sandisk sd cards, they have tendency to lose connection with phone... Non HC cards are max. 2GB, so they are rather trash comparing to HC, or XC (64 GB) cards

microSDXC technically maxes out at 2048 GB (2 TB). Also, I've never encountered this disconnection problem people keep talking about. Using a 64 GB SanDisk microSDXC in my phone. If yours does, I would recommend you take it back to the retailer to swap it out.

Get one of these instead: http://www.sandisk.com/products/memory-cards/microsd/extreme-uhs-i/?capacity=32GB
It's their new series. While it wont reach its potential maximum in the Xperia Z, it will in your next phone.
You should know that the phone can take 64 GB cards without any problems. I have one of these in my phone and you can't go wrong with that card either. But as I said I would go for the faster card. If nothing else, the faster card will be MUCH quicker to backup into something which does support UHS-1 speeds, like most laptops and ultrabooks do these days.

Lies, all lies, the reason behind the lies was that most 64GB microSDXC cards come pre-formatted to exFAT, and if people have used them in something else, sticking them in Android would cause them to be formatted, making users lose data. So they said "we don't support 64GB cards", even when theoretically the reader won't have any problems with 2048GB cards assuming such cards existed. OK, I don't know for a fact that 2TB cards would work (hard when they don't exist ), but a 256GB card likely wont cause any trouble for example. There was a guy who stuck a microSD to SD adapter in his Note II and used a 256GB SD card with that. Most likely the same will work on an XZ as the readers are quite indifferent to capacity as long as the cards adhere to a common format (in this case the SDXC standard). Obviously a microSD to SD adapter isn't practical with the XZ, but when larger cards come out they should work flawlessly in the XZ, as long as they are SDXC cards.
In 4.2. Sony added support for exFAT, since then the formatting problem wont occur so they thought it was safe enough to announce support I guess.
It annoys me a little when device specifications indicate a maximum filesystem size, because I know that is only dependant on which SD standard is in use (SDHC only supports up to 32GB) and on the filesystems available to the operating system. Really, when looking at device specifications, what should be indicated is which SD standards are accepted by the phone, and not the largest size the manufacturer has tested.

It will still work, you'll just have to format it to FAT32 prior to using it. I would suggest backing up and formatting to exFAT again once the 4.2.2 update drops for T-Mobile, considering the benefits of that filesystem such as filesizes >4.5GB and better Unicode support.
