Recently some of the system dumps from the upcoming Motorola Sholes/Tao/Droid hit the Developer community, and they have been trying to piece the puzzle together of what the Motorola Sholes/Tao/Droid is all about. We got our hands on a new app which looks like it will be front and center when the device finally hits the shelves, Motorola Phone Portal.
Those that remember using the Motorola Phone Tools app to hack their Motorola’s back in the day (I’m getting all “Ahmad – Back in the Day” about my v600, v810, and RAZR) will instantly recognize this little gem, but it’s been updated for Android and provides some pretty cool functionality. Basically, Motorola Phone Tools (MPP) serves as an all-in-one phone manager that allows users to easily view, edit, create, delete, and play their contacts, ringtones, photos, wallpaper, and media. The key difference now is, the app is web-based and you log into your phone from directly from your browser! No installing “modems” and drivers on your Windows machine (painful), just fire up the app and press the “Connect with Wi-Fi button. When you press the button, the app prompts you to either turn on Wi-Fi, or connect over USB. For this experiment, I chose Wi-Fi.
MPP lets you add/edit/delete/browse your contacts, photos, bookmarks, browser history, and media in an easy-to-use interface. Playing media directly from the device in the browser worked very well, and the picture viewer/slideshow feature is pretty damn cool. So with MPP you’ll be able to play/show-off your media anywhere from any browser. If Moto adds a Social/Sharing aspect to this, they will have a winner on their hands.
So there you have it kids, a little taste of what’s to come with the Sholes/Tao/Droid. The original Moto Phone Tools was a pretty handy app (when it worked), and the new MPP looks to be just as functional, if not more so. I am sure it will help a lot of users manage their contacts/media/content when it gets released, and the ability to do slideshows and play media from your device directly from your browser is pretty slick. I hope Moto adds more features and functionality to it as time goes on, but this seems like a sign of good things to come. Grab the .apk file below and play away!

This is a cool little phone manager app that works really well with Hero and G1. It's an app that runs a webserver from your phone that you can access over Wifi from any browser on the same network.
It allows you to:
* view/add media on your phone
* view your call log
* read and send sms from the browser
* and more!
Works with any OS - anything with a browser should work. Only works over wifi with Hero, no USB connection is possible it seems.
I replaced as much Motorola branding as I could and replaced it with HTC stuff to make it a nicer experience for HTC fanboys
Download HTCportalv2:

v2 - Changed more Moto references to HTC
Now if only this would let me control music playback.
Still, looks super, and nice to be able to manage over wi-fi instead of usb
You mean playback music on your pc from your phone? Hmm, I think it does allow that!
But I'm at work at the moment without wi-fi so can't confirm..
I think it lets you pull files, so you could listen on your pc, but I want to control my phone from my pc.
Basically, my stereo is the other side of my room from my desktop, and I'm lazy so if I could just play music from my pc, through the phone, into my amp, then I wouldn't have to get up
Also, I wonder if this means we can send files over wi-fi to web-enabled phones?
Have you tried it out yet? I can't give it another go until I'm home, but I thought that was possible. Look at the quote:
So with MPP you’ll be able to play/show-off your media anywhere from any browser.

You can certainly run a slideshow on your pc, from the photos on your phone. Pretty sure music is playable too. Give it a go
As for sending files, yes you can, but I think you might be restricted to media files.
How can I get it work with usb?
Not sure if that's possible, I was trying too. If you turn off wifi and try to connect it says it can connect over usb too, but I couldn't get it to connect. That might only work on a Motorola phone. Everything works over wifi though
That is awesome!!
This app is awesome!!!
Everyone should check it out!!!!
Nice work Pookie!
Cool, glad you like it!
I checked out the music thing, it lets you browse the music you have on your SD card, and you can click to play, but it plays the music on your phone instead of on the computer. That's what you wanted right Branwen?
Here's another screenshot:
Looks like a great app but I can't conect in my browser, anybody els having troble

Tryed to disable my firewall and got the same thing.
Runing modaco 2.5.1 core
I really can't think what could be causing it apart from some kind of issue with your network/ports/firewalls
For mine, at the initial setup it would not work at all when I clicked the start for wifi connection. It was only after I unplug my usb cable did it work...or I might had a huge lag.

I'm using 2.5.1 too and it works fine...
Are you sure you're wifi is enabled?
Have you tried pinging the IP address from your PC's command prompt?
If you can't even ping it you'll know it's a firewall/port issue...
This was cool! Thanks for your effort!

im having the same issues in general with my hero: my laptop and the hero are connected to the same wifi network, both work fine, but they don't see each other. no ping, no ssh, no http no nothing. from my cable connected (to the wifi router) pc, everything works just splendid. i actually blame either my router (fritzbox, but some lowend version) or my laptop/ubuntu on my laptop for this behaviour, but i actually never investigated in that. whenever i want to connect from my laptop to my phone i hop via my pc, works fine.
It looks like quite a good contact manager also.
And yeah this is just what I wanted for music playback!

Hi,
This is my first post on the forum, but I often read it, nice job!!
The subject is very explicit, does anybody knows if there is Kies for Mac?, or maybe in a future?
TIA.
Jesus.
that's a tough one....
you'll be better off running the windows emulation to get kies installed in your Mac
truth is... you are not missing anything by not installing Kies
i don't even use Kies
i did install it, but after finding out what it does, i've no use for it
except to check for official firmwares
but we have so many firmwares available from samsung firmwares.com that it has become totally useless to me
all my syncing is done via my gmail account
and music/video is just drag and drop direct to the phone
i'm sure they will release a Mac version in the near future.

Many thanks for the reply AllGamer, I come from iPhone world and I miss a tool to sync everything, including apps. Actually I sync with my google account contacts, calendars, etc..., but not apps, pictures, videos... :-(
Cheers!

Apple is notorious for blocking Syncs. Palm Pre initially was able to sync, Apple updated software to block then -> Palm created a workaround -> Apple block -> it might have repeated after that.
I doubt there is an official way to natively, and seamlessly sync via iTunes. Some 3rd party software...maybe, still no guarantees.
@OP, you can look into doubletwist, it has a very iTunes look/feel to it, will allow you to sync Podcasts, Music & Android Apps (sorry, no video AFAIK):
Main Page: http://www.doubletwist.com/dt/Home/Index.dt
Mac download link: http://www.doubletwist.com/dt/Download/DownloadMac.dt
if the goal is to Sync the music you have purchased in iTunes to your SGS phone, then it's rather simple
just download all the music off iTunes to your hard drive, and use a AC3 or MP3 converter to remove the Digital Right Management, then you can use the music on any device you want

Part of the reason why I hate Apple. Seriously what did they get by doing that? If you don't want to officially support syncing with other devices, don't. But intentionally blocking it is evil and unethical. /off-topic

hello i`m from Brazil, I bought my i9000 and outdoor kies not appear for me to buy the apps, says it does not support the country in which I am.
Sorry my english.
Downloaded Kies today from samsungmobile.co.uk and got hold of copies of XP (with SP3) and Parallels 6 and VMFusion. Runs under Leopard no problem on Parallels 6 but could not get it to work with VMFusion. Don't ask where I got the copies - seek and you will find.
I want it for Linux.
Top tip...
Don't try upgrading your firmware using Parallels 6.
Kies got to the switch to install mode (yellow screen on 'phone warning you not to disconnect) and at this point it seems that Parallels can't see the USB driver any more when the 'phone is in recovery mode...
It's possible if I had fiddled around in Win7 device manager uninstalling and re-plugging the 'phone it might have worked, but I gave up and used a PC.
Oh and of course I had a moment of panic that I would break the 'phone disconnecting it, but pressing and holding the power got it back again.
You can't really blame Parallels, as I have had all sorts of problems getting a working USB driver on two different PCs that would let Odin see the 'phone.
Aren't Samsung drivers so reliable and east to use
If your Samsung is running Windows Mobile or Android OS take a look at SyncMate - it allows syncing devcies running these OSs with Mac for free

[Android 2.2+][Windows Client] FilePush - "push" files from your PC to your device

FilePush lets you transfer files to your Android device with only two clicks. With the Windows Client you can create context menu entries that appear when you right-click a file inside Windows Explorer. With a click on the "Push file to device" entry the file will appear a few seconds later as a download on your device. It works much like Chrome2Phone just for files.
There is a paid version that costs $1.2 and a free trial that has all the features but lasts only for 14 days.
Paid $1.2
Free Trial
Windows Client (direct download)
Officially supported is Windows Vista, 7 and 8
WLAN transfer
It's faster but can obviously only be used if your PC is connected to the same Wireless Network as your Android device. A internet connection is still required on both the device and the PC as the transfer gets initiated by a Google Push message.
Google Drive Transfer
The file gets uploaded onto your Google Drive first and will then be downloaded onto the device. It's slower but should work anywhere with an internet connection.
Something that's probably a concern for a lot of people: Your Google password isn't stored anywhere, locally or on a server. It uses OAuth and you only have to login with your Google Account the first time you launch the Windows application.

There are a few differences. Once you have FilePush set up you don't have to do anything else than just click files and they are on your phone. It doesn't always have to run in the background because it uses push messages to initiate the file transfer. With Wifi Transfer Pro for example you have to launch the app on the phone, enable the small http server and type the IP (that could be different every time) inside the browser. This doesn't seem like a lot of work but if you just want to send one or two files at a random time of the day with FilePush you can just click it and don't have to worry about it anymore.

1. Phone to Computer is an often suggested feature but technically hard to accomplish to make it user friendly, but I'm working on it
2. Transfer of folders is also something that I want to do but has some downsides as I would have to zip all the files and unzip them on the phone again
3. It already works over 3G if you use Google Drive to transfer the files
Btw. tonight I released a update for both the Android app and the windows client:
Android version 1.1.3:
» Added option to redownload a file
» Added Jelly Bean Notifications with Buttons
» Migrated to the new Google Cloud Messaging (GCM) Service
Windows version 1.0.0.5:
» Changes for the new Google Cloud Messaging Service
» Fixed a crash that could occur when using Google Drive

First off, thanks for getting the full version!
Did you login with the same Google account on the windows client as you registered your device with?
Did you press "Refresh" inside the preference window of the windows client? You can bring that screen up by right clicking the FilePush Icon within the taskbar and then clicking "Preferences".
Thanks!
Hi all,
I'm going to start hacking on the ChromeCast... to boot or run a tiny Linux distro, and also to run homebrew apps without the necessity of the whitelisting process, etc. I'll be keeping a log of my work at chromecastdev.com. Collaboration is welcome.
The first thing I'm going to play with is trying to dump the bootloader (resides in the little NAND on the Marvell SOC?).

I wish you luck in your conquest!
Hopefully developers on this forum can do some cool stuff with Chromecast!
Port it to Raspberry Pi. *fingers crossed*
Wait, it's an enclosed system, how do you plan to snoop it?
Ethernet over HDMI or the USB port could provide a path. Also there is a header inside it looks like that isn't listed as a spec so it could be a serial/JTAG point. High hopes for this getting hacked and running an XBMC or Plex client, although I guess Plex web might be fine.

I don't know if you've already found it, but there are various source files available here. Bootloader sources are in the "sdk" repo. A cursory glance at them makes it seem like you can boot from a USB device by holding down the button on boot, but the image needs to be signed by Google.
any chance you can take some high-res photos of the pcb? The marvell chip isn't listed on the marvell website yet, would be great if we could find a block diagram.
I would sink porting Android would be the best step right now as this is an android forum and is younger brother ran android
Just my opinion.

Thanks tchebb!!! And here I thought I was finally going to have a reason to play with a logic analyzer to try to dump the bootloader off the bus.
Edit: Well, maybe it's not that simple after all. They didn't include everything... for instance, pin_settings.h is missing.

Yeah, the source doesn't seem to be in a buildable state. I was thinking there might be something like an Android repo manifest.xml to bring all those git repos together into one source tree, but I couldn't find anything like that. Also, like you said, there are lots of missing files referenced in the build scripts.
I found the link to the source after downloading the Chromecast app (my device hasn't arrived yet) and letting it scan and fail to find anything. It directed me here, which has the Google Code link in the "What's Under the Hood?" entry.
The other interesting documentation I found is here, specifically the part about pressing "Apps" seven times to enable developer mode (very reminiscent of dev mode on new Android versions). It's unclear whether that just exposes additional info in the desktop app or actually sends a packet to the Chromecast to enable some sort of on-device dev mode.
Once I get mine, the first thing I want to do is get a full packet capture of the setup and update process, and some sample network traffic generated by normal use.

The only thing that works for me is starting a youtube video from the Android youtube app.
No controls yet, it is not implemented.
Tab casting from Chrome spawns an empty chrome window.
Other Chromecast apps (Play Music) do not detect leapcast yet, or more precisely detects it but do not show the cast button.

It is pretty annoying that a phone is required to use the Chromecast's Plex. I have Plex set up fine, and it plays all nice, but I don't want to use my phone as a remote, if I have a laptop or desktop I can use.
I want to stream from my desktop to the Chromecast with Plex. It works fine, but my phone has to be used as a "middleman".
Any way around this? Like using the interface in the Plex web server?

Try using plex.tv, log in and you should be able to cast from there just fine, you will need to setup your Plex server to be seen over the internet correctly within Plex/Web.

You have to set it up in your Plex Media Server/MyPlex settings.
http://127.0.0.1:32400/manage/index.html#!/settings
You have to fill out your login, and connect, if done right you should have 2 green checkmarks, you may have to click Show Advanced Settings to manually set the port, then you will have to port forward that port on your router (I did so because I disable UPnP as a matter of habit).

Okay I see. Port forwarding is no problem.
Do I port forward port 32400 then?

Yes, and open up Advanced and check the box, "Manually specify port" leaving 32400 filled in, I found it would not work for me otherwise.
I forwarded port 32400 and canyouseeme.org says:
I can see your service on 80.xx.92.xx on port (32400)
Your ISP is not blocking port 32400
When I open the page: http://plex.tv/web/app it's not there though. Still says "You don't have any media servers yet."

What do you see when you go here?
http://plex.tv/web/app#!/settings/server
...also, you may have to go into settings and see if there is a Publish Server option.

I got it to work! I logged in (it shows I logged in on the right side -.-), but whenever I play a movie, it just stucks there with a gray screen..
When I pick "Local" (my PC obviously) it works fine, but Chromecast is just gray screen.

:\...dunno, when it worked for me the other day (even though I'm not a subscriber) it worked fine (now it no longer works for me, (since i'm not subscribed), so I cannot test it again).
Maybe it needs time to sync? Try restarting your PC and or the Plex server...try it in an incognito chrome browser window (this will make sure you do not have some plugin interfering)...if worse comes to worse, you may have to contact Plex.

Tried the above.. Not sure what's wrong.
I'll try contacting Plex! Thanks, buddy!

No problem, please update this thread and let us know if they fix it or not...and if possible, how they fixed it.
Has anyone come across a ROM that's dedicated to HotSpoting?
My thoughts are this:
1) Is there anything for this phone like a SafeStrap where you can change roms just by rebooting?
2) Could a rom be written to disable pretty much everything except hotspot (cannot receive text messages or phone calls, no apks are trying to use the internet in the background, etc...)?
I don't know how to make roms, so I am not going to say it sounds easy, but it does sound much simpler than a lot of the full OS roms I see.
Thanks guys!
I mean, there're 3G router for 30 dollars that can do that, and you want to use a fully featured phone that costs 150 USD$ o more for that?
Mmmmm.....

yeah but there's already ROMs that have the ability to do Wifi hotspot. so why wouldnt you just flash one of those and call it a day.
not like you're really going to see any better battery life by only having it as a hotspot. that **** kills the battery

My phone already does hotspot. I just changed permissions and have been good to go.
I can't get internet out at my house, so I use my phone's hotspot (and an antenna and amplifier I put together) so I can still game. When I get a phone call, or a picture message, it will lag like crazy, or dump my game.
This is why I would like a very simple ROM that would not allow for anything but a hotspot, or even just the ability to turn everything else off. I also noticed that if I can keep my unused RAM above 1gb, it hotspot's better.

I have looked into 3G routers, but then I'd have to pay for another phone line, and I'm not looking to do that. Then there's companies that sell internet service that is unlimited and 3G, but they are about a $500 start up fee, and about $125 a month after that. That is CRAZY!
Unless I've got it wrong, and I can somehow clone my SIM Card for the 3G router? I'm definitely no 3G router expert. Thoughts?
In that case, you can install Android Firewall and block everything except tethering and there's an app for blocking all calls. I think (my opinion) that's easier than a full hotspot rom having to switch back and forth. You can also make an script for enabling both or use tasker.

Thanks! I'm going to look into that right now.
This app:

Does what you need.

Yup, that's what I got. Also I got another apk that blocks startup apks (BootManager), and with both of them I got better signal.
Thanks for the help.
I have also noticed that my battery life has increased a lot. I was 40% more efficient since doing this yesterday, and about 40% more efficient this morning too. I'm assuming it's because of the BootManager.
Does anyone know the programs to allow through the firewall in order to get the hotspot to work?
I tried allowing everything (by clicking the check boxes) and that didn't work unless I clicked the box that says 'all apps'. I'm assuming what I need is not populating and so the only was to get it is to click 'all apps' which defeats the purpose. :-/
And does anyone know if the hotspot is a stand alone or if it uses other applications in order to work?
Thanks again!
If you go to settings, there's an option "Tethering support". You have to enable that in order to tether to works.
Just a thing: If you modify your traffic or DNS or whatever with another program (example, AdFree that blocks ads) the adds will be blocked also to anyone that connects to the hotspot.

I didn't find a 'settings' on it or a 'Tethering Support'. I only see when hitting menu: Firewall Disabled/Enabled, Log Disabled/Enabled, Save Rules, Exit, Help, and More.
Then under 'More', I see: Show Log, Show Rules, Clear Log, Set Password, Set Custom Script.
There is also the Mode in the top left that lets me do White/Black list.
I would love to go into 'Tethering Support if you can guide me there!
I don't know if we are seeing the same app but this one has that option

What is the apk and version number you're running? That link is dead. I downloaded 'droid wall v1.5.7'.

Droidwall hasn't been updated in ages and doesn't have toggles for tethering.
I use AFWall+, which built off the concept of Droidwall. It has an entry you can whitelist for Tether & DNS.

Ahhh. Yeah, this program looks much much better. I'm out for work all week, but when I get back home this weekend, I'll give it a try.
Thanks for the help!
EDIT: I don't have tethering in the options like you, but it's just another application on the list so I checked it. Is there anything else I need to check to make it only hotspot? Like the phone and text one, or the DLNA?
