G1 big problems - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hay i have a rooted G1 with Jf - can't rember what version.
I've been having lots of problems with force closing of various programs but otherwise everything was going fine.
After a few force closes today i decided to restart my phone, turned it off and then back on and stuck it in my pocket.
When i went to check my texts 5 minuets later i took it out and it was just stilling on the 'Android' splash screen - it was moving then freezing for a few seconds then moving (i don't know if that's normal but it wouldnt surprise me).
I took the battery out and restated again and exactly the same thing - it would not boot.
I did a quick search on the problem and remembered how to boot in camera+red mode - which the phone did fine. I then read that pushing green+menu+red would fix it.
I did this and the phone booted, but it lost all my home screen icons and was laid out like when the phone was bought. i then cheked an app or two and they are all still there and seem to have retained their data.
However other strange things are happening - the home button dosnt work, nether does the green, when i hold the red button i only get the 'power off' option not 'power off, silent and airplane' as i used to.
They are the problems i have found so far but there may be more. Basically i want to know what pushing green, menu, red actually does and i want to know what the hell is going on - im totally lost.
Please help
P.S. i did a test on the consol and it seems i still have root assess - just encase that relative

Go to recovery, wipe and reflash. It will solve all your issues.

I can't actually remember how to do that - can you explain more or link me?
and will it have any effect on my apps or settings?

You're going to need to go into recovery; press the home screen button, then the red (energize, end call, whatever) button. Hold both down until you get into recovery, which will be the text menu with all the selections available in green. Then scroll down to "wipe data/ factory reset" and do that- this simply wipes the phones internal memory. Then load the rom you are using, which I assume is already on the root of your sd card. If not, connect the phone, mount the card, and put the rom there before you get started with the above steps- chris

Lost Button & Keyboard Functionality

Started experiencing a strange issue with my tilt today..
When I soft reset it loads the Today screen, and then attempts to search for the contact 'wszx' (these keys are located next to each other). After this I can navigate the phone just fine using the touch screen, but the only buttons that work are the directional and center buttons located on the front of the phone, and the arrow keys on the keyboard. I cannot type at all using the keyboard, and pressing any of the other buttons does nothing (except the directional/center/Power). I also cannot Hard reset because the two soft-keys do absolutely nothing. I've hard reset in the past but it no longer works.
So am I SOL? I think I've tried everything.. and now I have a custom rom, etc on the phone and I have no way of getting it back to factory rom without the ability to hard reset.
Thanks for any help.

Sounds like a hardware issue or simply a bad flash. Have you attempted to reflash the rom? Which rom are you using?
Well...
It wasn't working again this morning, but suddenly - out of nowhere - began to work properly. I'm stumped. If I ever figure out the exact issue I'll be sure to post back.
Thanks
Greetings,
I have same problem on my tytn...
Sometimes it suddenly starts working fine, but shortly it breaks again.
I have tried hard-reseting while it was working, but didnt help.
I think the problem appeared after charging my phone with a motorola v3 charger, so maybe it damaged my phone with over-voltage or something...
Anyway, if someone can suggest something i would be very grateful!
Hi I have exactly the same symptoms with my HTC Tytn II...when you power it on it starts typing letters (in my case CEDF). If the recording button is active it will start recording too. This happened suddenly and I haven't used any other charging apart from the usb and wall socket charger supplied with it.
All buttons (except front center key) and keyboard do not work. Any suggestions would be appreciated very much. This phone is only 8 months old.
Hi,
my Kaiser with dutty's WM6.1WWE ROM did the same this morning Yes I disabled the button 6 and stopped the voice recordings but all the hardware keys but few in the center of the keyboard are not responding. So I cant make or receive calls without taking the stylus out and touching the screen soft buttons andd that's pin in the ... while I am driving. I am using this ROM for almost a year now and I am extremely hapy (up to now) with its performance. When it all happened there were no activities on the phone - I woke up from a SMS notification (Yes I did receive an SMS from my bank) followed by repeting Voice Recordings. Any help will be highly appresiated! Thanks in advance!
keyboard problem
I am experiencing a similar problem with my stock tilt my keyboard does work however none of the text appears on the screen. I have tried hard reset and everything else I could think of, short of a clear storage reload. I would appreciate any help or suggestions from some of you more experienced users.

anyone ever figure this problem out? im having the same thing happen now.
Same here
I've had it for a couple of weeks now.
I'm running WM6.1 from HTC (rom ver.3.29.422.1 from 2009-01-12) so nothing fancy here.
I even ordered and replaced the D-Pad and I replaced the keyboard (just the sticky part though). I totaly dismantled the phone and didn't find any issues with the cables.
Any ideas would be highly appreciated

This is crazy. My problem is exactly the same. I re-romed to the latest phoenix and it did not change a thing.

i have the same problem And there is something else. My Kaiser wakes up every 2 minutes - it's killing the battery. It works only for 6 hours now
Help
bump!!!
No more people with this issue or any solutions?
Pls! Help
ive joined the gang!
I decided to flash my cooked rom ive been working on.
i hadnt changed much in the kitchen and i think the flash has went badly.
it starts booting windows and where it should state "calibrate screen" it goes white and hangs there, buttons seem to respond by lighting up when pressed.
Now when i try to get it into bootloader or even hard reset it just doesnt work.
it just restarts the phone.
before this happened the backspace key hasnt been working for ages.
anybody got any ideas??
(lucky for me i have a backup kaiser!)
I'm having the same problem. Automatic wakeup, applications starting automatically, can't use keyboard, have to to use screen to use phone etc. I've hardreset using the clear storage method, reflashed a couple of times, but nothing helped. So here I am joining the club
If it's not a hardware issue, then try to flash another radio, many of the custom ROMs here doesn't include a radio, so if it's caused by a wrong radio, flash a new ROM without a radio doesn't help.
Check the Sticky for 'how to' if not aware.
PS: Check here for something need to know..
The question is.... how do I flash the device if I cant get it to go to boot loader and the OS wont boot properly !?
I think its an official Brick!
the really odd thing I've discovered is sometimes the OS leaves the loading screen on, and when it does if I press the FN and folder key, I get explorer up but its not responding... I haven't tried inserting a memory card yet to see if I can access that.

Try this:
1. Take out the battery from the phone.
2. Take out SIM card and SD card.
3. Press in and hold the CAMERA button.
4. Plugin to your computer using the USB cable, while keep holding press in the CAMERA button.
See does it enter the BOOTLOADER mode.
Once entered the BOOTLOADER mode, you can flash a new radio or rom right from there, in your regular way of running KaiserCustomRUU.exe.(Since you already have a HardSPL flashed on, otherwise a HardSPL is needed to flash first.)
Good luck.
Edit: If the power button and the camera button is still working, you can use the regular way of entering BOOTLOADER mode, and flash from bootloader mode or flash from SD card.

To enter in bootloader mode:
Simply Switch off your phone. Press and hold camera button and also press and hold the power button..You can remove ur finger from power button when phone is switched on but keep holding camera button until u come to bootloader …Now attach the usb to ur computer and do the flashing you normally do.

Thx for your suggestion:
I tried removing battery as sim and sd were already removed due to previous attempts in fixing!
so:
i removed battery (did not put back in), plugged in while holding camera
got nothing, so held power button at same time, the green light came on, then went off, and came back on again. but no bootloader.
i tried same procedure with battery in, and all i get is the OS loading up, no bootloader no matter how long i hold the buttons.
is there any other alternative method to get into bootloader (possibly involving other button presses)?
or any other ideas.
Really want to fix this as it was my "experimental" phone for cooking roms with.
Thanks again.
Suspect you have some hardware issue with the camera button. Can you ever take a photo with it?
Edit: Did you read through every post onthis thread:
MTTY (How to fix a bad ROM flash!)
If you tried that and still no luck, you can post your questions there. There are masters will keep an eye on that thread. And generally they only have time to look into their 'subscribed' threads, chances are they will not look into here.
Edit: Maybe the procedure I told is wrong, since I call from memory, check this:
dwny said:
If you have a bad flash....that's no reason to worry.
I haven't had to use MTTY to recover.
In most cases, if there's no issues with the Rom itself...you can pop out the battery and re-flash the same ROM from BootLoader Mode. This will also work if for some reason your computer crashes or loses power & restart during the FLASH.
If the Rom has issues.....the flash will not complete and the device will be stuck in BootLoader Mode. At this point, you must FLASH a FACTORY ROM!!
Pop the battery off 1st, power up the device, device will power up in BootLoader Mode, connect to pc & FLASH your devices FACTORY ROM. This will restore your device back to it's original out the box settings.
The above only works if the device has been put through the Hard SPL or SuperCID process.
I personally have never tried to flash a cooked ROM without unlocking any of my devices. From what I've read what others have experienced...the flash would just fail and they're stuck in BootLoader Mode.
Myself ... I've experienced bad flashes, bad cooked roms that I've cooked, lost power to a pc & had my pc crash during a flash. Listed above is how I've recovered. There is life after Bootloader Mode.
The only time you have to worry is if your device does not power up at all
As a public chef...it's your responsibility to set the parameters of your ROM! Meaning, Radio, HardSPL, program conflicts, etc.
You are not ultimately responsible if someone bricks their phone but if they pushed the issue, you could be hit with some form of liabilty because you failed on providing a simple Disclaimer that sets the expectation.
I hope I've been helpful.....

Edit again:
And try like:
Plug in USB first, and thenn press & hold Camera, Power button etc.
I remember once I read there is a way to enter bootloader without battery, just can not find the original again.

[Q] No Options in Clockwork

I tried looking through all of the threads, Google, & every other method i could think of to find the answer to my question, but i can't seem to find anyone else with my issue.
I was in the process of trying to put the Honeycomb build on my internal memory, when i realized i was never able to get Clockwork Recovery working as it's supposed to. Whenever i select AND option, all i get is a blank screen (image attached). I have tried reflashing the recovery, both manually & through ROM Manager & even flashing it to the SD card (as stated in the Honeycomb tutorial) i'm still getting blank options.
I know my way around Android devices (never had any trouble rooting/flashing my EVO but this seems to have me stumped for now. Don't need anyone to hold my hand through it, just a push in the right direction would be a huge help.
~Thanks in advance.
go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=922870
download the clockwork mod only sd card image
burn the image to your sd card via winimage
mounts and storge format boot/system/data(may crash, just hard reset)
now you should be able to reflash the image of your choice.
EDIT: Didn't see the picture until I logged in. I don't think any of my original post below is helpful for this problem.
Are you using the power key to select and turning the screen off? I've done that on my phone--used power instead of camera, and it turns the screen off. If you hit power again, it toggles the screen back on. Of the top of my head, I don't remember what the select button for the NC is, but the only other option we have is the "n" button.

Wow i feel stupid. I thought Clockwork on the nook worked the same as on the EVO, with the power button being Select.
FYI to anyone that comes across this with the same problem: Power will clear the screen & the 'n' button needs to be used to select.
Thanks robjective

Screen goes black/fixed/keyboard problem now

So I inherited a G1 that looks like its in good shape. But when I turn it on it briefly flashes a boot screen that quickly fades to black.
If I hold down the power and camera button it starts to boot, I let go of the power button and keep the camera button held down the screen will stay lit and I can see the fastboot mode. As soon as I let go of the camera button some other words flash on the screen and it dies again.
I looked through the forum assuming I could quickly fix this and have a new backup phone but this forum is now so advanced nobody seems to be having basic problems like this. And anyone who is still here seems to have lots more experience than me with this particular model of phone. Usually the stickies have an unbrick thread but I cant seem to find it.
I am sure this is something simple but if someone could point me in the right direction, or say the screen is burned out, I its bricked, or whatever you think it might be, I would appreciate it.
After more reading and discussing with previous owner, I think that the Camera and power button puts it into fastboot. (not sure exactly what that is yet)
From there it tries to install something from the SD card but fails.
The SD card contains DREAIMG.nbh and two empty folders. It seems to be trying to install something else besides DREAIMG but it fails so fast I cant catch it.
Is there something else I should place on the external SD card or perhaps a different version of the same file?
The previous owner also told me the G1 had been running CM6 if that makes any difference. ( I know it does on CM7 ).
I can get it to the screen with the three skateboarding androids (engineering spl indication? )but any time I let go of any of the buttons the screen fades right to black, making any further button pushing useless.
Any helpful hints? Anyone? Even a thread you think I should read completely?
I copied the DREAIMG.ngh to the desktop of my computer and reformated the SD card. After I bunch of button pushing and holding I managed to get it to hold on the HBOOT screen without going black. I pushed the trackball down and it reloaded the image apparently. Now it turns on and such but none of the keyboard buttons work and it says safemode in the bottom left corner. I will continue to read and search.
I cant find anything in this forum about safe mode. I am stumped.
The phone will boot and tries to get me to sign up for the gmail account but the keyboard only has the d, e, f, and x keys working.
The emergency dialer seems to work. I dialed my other phone with it and it said its not an emergency number and wont let it dial.
I am pretty sure this is not a lost cause here. There is just something I am missing. Could it be a bad flash from the DREAIMG.nbh?
Would it be possible to download a different image.nbh from someplace and try that?
Anyone have any ideas?
ok what are you trying to do exactly? i think your having trouble because the files on your sd... take them all off and see what happens??
can you boot into recovery? holding home+power??

Trying to get a functioning phone is all. I am comfortable fiddling with it , just dont know the process to go through.
I pulled the SD card and rebooted and its the same result. Little grey box in the bottom left that says 'safe mode' and it proceeds to the google account screen.
The touch screen works, and the trackball seems to. but Home and Menu dont so I cant even back out of the sign in screen.
Booting up with home+power gives me the triangle with the ! inside it instead of any kind of recovery mode like I expected.
Like I mentioned earlier, I believe it might be running CM6 but I am not even positive about that. I was told it was.
Any suggestions on my nextstep to get it into some kind of functoning state? I am willing to try anything suggested. New ROM or whatever.
I really thing its something simple, I just dont have any expreience with this model at all.
After more searching I guess the ! with triangle is the first screen of the recovery mode? But pushing Alt+L or Alt+I doesnt do anything.
I am used to the Galaxy S recover mode being all right there on the screen.
So next step would be......?
no wait you get the triangle and the !?? thats good lol that is the stock recovery mode.. so now i know what to work with when you get to that screen you can press alt+L and a list should pop up!!

Nothing, hold down Alt and then press and hold L. No changes.
The other odd thing is now when I do the camera+power combo it takes me to the welcome screen instead of the HBOOT screen. I was going to try reflashing the image on the external SD card and now it wont do that either.
The return+power combo also takes me to the welcome screen now.
The welcome screen is where I want to be except the 'safe mode' seems to be keeping the keyboard from functioning?
what welcome screen? lol
are the keys sticking maybe? lol

First I get the T-Mobile G1 screen.
then the Android guy
then the Welcome to T-MobileG1, touch the android to begin.
That all seems normal to me, except for teh grey box that says 'safe mode' in the corner.
So i touch the android and it moves to the Setting upp your T-mobile G1 screen and wants me to enter my account info, which I cannot do because the keyboard is not funtioning properly. Its almost like the image flash borked the keyboard drivers or something.

the d, e ,f , x keys are all working so I think its not a stuck key. no other keys seem to work though. nor the menu buttons.
would safe mode mean some of the drivers are disabled? kind of like on a desktop computer?
And if so, how to get out of safe mode?
uhhh i never even been on safe mode.. is the led blue while its on? my advice would be to unroot but you cant get recovery functioning properly so im not sure what to do.. do you know what radio and hboot you have?
does it go to safe mode when you just boot up normally?

Yes, safe mode shows in the bottom left corner of the screen when I power up normally.
I should have writen down what radio and such as I saw it displayed when I was in HBOOT and installing the DREAIMG.nbh file but I didnt think to.
Now I am either getting the Welcome to T-mobile screen or the first step of the recovery screen depending on the button combo I use.
But I am unable to proceed to do anything useful.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000 won't work if not plugged on external power source

Hi guys,
The following problem has taken me litterally DAYS of reading XDA, trying everything I could, but still no solution. Googling and searching this forum didn't help either, and it's totally weird.
It's a Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000, on which were installed, almost two years ago, the ClockWorkMod recovery, Darky's ROM, Froyo, and everything was fine for months. Then, one day, out of nowhere, it switched off, without notice. Impossible to switch it on again! I remembered having seen some strange battery behavior few days before, like falling from 80% to 30% with no reason, so I thought of a battery issue. I plugged it for a full night. In the morning, I was able to boot it, but not easily, and all apps were crashing: during boot, or when launched manually. Yes, all I tried were crashing! Then, the phone became fully not bootable: press the power button, the screen shows "Samsung GT-I9000", then switches off...
I ordered a new battery: same result.
A guy from a phone repair store told me to plug the phone, and keep the power button down for 2 minutes: after this, I could reboot the phone, and thus, wipe data (factory reset). But it didn't help.
After "playing" a bit with it, I realized that the problem is:
the phone won't boot if an external source of power is not connected (as said above, white text shows, then the phone "dies")
if started with power cord/usb, the phone will work fine, all the time
if started with power cord/usb, and the external power source removed once the phone is booted, the phone will work fine, UNTIL the screen goes black for power saving mode or by pressing pwoer button, after which, within seconds, you can't open the phone anymore. I mean: if you press the start/power button immediately after the screen goes black, the screen goes on again, and the phone is ok. If you wait for few seconds, it's over, you can't do anything, and have to reboot the phone. This said, the phone doesn't vibrate, so I suppose it's not really off. But then... what is this state??
I really tried my best: updated to GB2.3.6, bricked my phone trying to re-install the CWM and having a bootloop, installed and used Odin and Heimdall, reverted to stock kernel, etc, etc, etc.
I feel sorry to bother you guys, I was really convinced that with the incredibly huge amount of data, how-tos, explanations, etc. I would manage to get rid of this, but this problem, though I don't really think it's hardware (but maybe it is?) stayed across so many kernels, roms, etc. that it's killing me!
For the record:
Model number: GT-I9000
Micro-software (?): 2.3.6
Baseband: I9000XXJW4
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-I9000XWJW7-CL1125830 [email protected] #2 (problem was the same with [email protected] #2)
Version number: GINGERBREAD.XXJW4
Any help would be greatly appreciated, considering that a wireless phone that needs to be wired is a little bit of an issue...
Thanks in advance !

That's a very strange problem... let's try something, remove the battery, sim card and sd card and hold the power button for 1-2 minutes, btw when the screen is off, is really the phone off or just the screen? did you try to make a call to your phone when the screen is off?

Hi timberman thanks for the answer!
You're very right: I totally forgot to say that what initially allowed me to restart my phone "regularly" was this procedure of pressing the power button for 2 minutes (hint given by a man from a repair shop). Before this, I couldn't (kind of a bootloop).
It's a very good question! I don't think the phone is really off in fact, because there isn't this vibration saying the phone turned off... Let me try to call it!
F..k! I was redirected right away to the voicemail... so... phone was off
I'm starting to think it's an harware issue... I reinstalled lots of ROMs, kernel, etc. Same ****...
Any idea?

Hi! Answering is already nice
I tried the button pressed for 2 minutes without battery: didn't change anything.
I tried playing a sound: MAN, YOU'RE A GENIUS!!! Launching the music, then forcing the screen off with power button lets the music play, and OF COURSE, I can reactivate the screen by pressing the home button. The screen goes off normally again after few seconds, but the music is still playing, etc. So, as long as the music goes, the bug doesn't happen!
Other hints:
For some time already, when I was removing the phone from my ear after a call, quite often, the screen was staying off, and I had to press a lot of buttons to have it on again, and be able to close the call
The moment where it crashes when booting without power is the very INSTANT where the initial white text (Samsung Galaxy S) goes brighter. So, if you unplug the power cord just after this, the boot ends normally. In summary, something happens at boot just after screen brightness changes which is the same thing happening when the screen goes off for power saving. All this, only when no external power is plugged.
Hehe, we (you) are making progress

Hi again, it seems like your phone is unable to exit the deep sleep mode or something like that so, let`s try another thing, in ICS or JB there´s an option in the developer option settings that unfortunately is not present in gingerbread roms, so, you can try to switch to a ICS/JB rom and go to settings-developer options and disable the "PM sleep mode" let`s see what happens then

I tried to install ICS, with a GREAT tutorial found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494493 Sadly, the phone reboots after installing the ICS kernel, and then doesn't work anymore, I had to reinstall the Gingerbread (I tried twice).
Last news: I let the phone play music (sound muted!!) for about 12 or 18h: all was fine! So I decided to pause the music, and see what happens. Boom ((c) Steve Jobs)!! The screen went black, and phone was "dead". I was expecting this, so no panick, I put back my SIM card, my SD card, and tried to reboot, with power cord plugged: it boots until the screen shows the small loader animation, then the empty battery image, but then goes black again, instead of showing the charging battery!! Download mode is still available, so I'll try to reflash the kernel, say.
It's like if each time screen was put black, phone was dying.
I can't stress enough how I appreciate your help: even if we can't save my phone, it's very pleasant to be able to TRY things. Thanks man!! :good:
Update: I reinstalled all... and it's not, even with power cord in, going further than the "Samsung Galaxy S" white text. The moment this picture disappears from screen, phone is dead. For good this time ?

Hi! No, I didn't, I used Odin. But now, I can't try anything anymore The only "results" I can get from this phone are:
- enter download mode and update from Odin (maybe from Heimdall, too, but I didn't check)
- reboot until the first moment the screen goes black, after which, the phone becomes fully unresponsive

[Q] Hung after recovery

I have HTC One Developer's Edition.
A couple of months ago I decided I could not wait for HTC to release 4.3. and install Android Revolution.
I made a recovery on Sept 11 (should have known ...), installed the thing and got myself a smoothly functioning custom ROM.
After hearing HTC has released KitKat for the Developer's Edition, I decided to go back to 4.3 so I can install the KitKat update.
I was being stupid and did not read instructions or anything else. Instead I simply went to the bootloader -> recovery -> restore
Then I restored the System and Boot image which went just fine.
Right after that SuperUser said that my phone is not rooted and asked whether I want to root it, I swiped the screen to confirm.
Unfortunately at the first boot the phone hung at the start screen, the one with white background, htc logo, the big "one" word and beats audio in the bottom.
I tried turning off the phone and it wouldnt do it.
So right now I am writing this in a depressed mood, waiting for the battery in the phone to run out all the hwile hoping real bad that I haven't just bricked this freakin 650 dollar thing.
What should I do to get things back to normal ?
Press and hold the power button. Your phone WILL turn off. Then bootloader > recovery > factory reset. Should be good.
Thanks for your suggestion.
The power button did -not- work I did repeatedly try holding it down for 15-20 seconds but it wouldnt turn off. Which is why I posed my problem here.
However the factory wipe did indeed work. It'd take a lot of time and effort to recover all the contents with my 150 kbyte/s internet but at least I know my baby (*strokes the back of the phone*) will be just fine.
