so I know this has pretty much absolutely nothing to do with development, other than the fact that an OS is where most of the stuff starts, but I just wanted to share with you guys that if you have a .edu email address (a student address) you qualify for the student upgrade to either windows7 home premium or Professional.
for more info go to win741.com.
Mods will probably lock this or move it, but I just had to share this with a community that has given me so much!

Wrong place but great find!
I'm upgrading today!! (good thing I have a .edu account for just this occasion)
thanks alot
I mean, it's a nice gesture, but it really doesn't belong here, especially not in the development section. If you doubt yourself, you probably should steer clear of posting.
Besides, Android caters particularly to the Linux constituency, so, you know.
Again, thanks for the info, but some advertisement about a new Windows version is entirely unrelated to the development of the Android platform.
i know its in the wrong place, in the wrong forum completely. I also know that Linux is the primary for android, but I just wanted to share and get this out there. Like I said in the OP, just wanted to give back. I could have posted this is Dream general, but honestly, who would have looked there...?

just doing a quick search, i think you can register for a .edu email here if you use the site to learn/teach

Thank you very much! Great contribution.
Well, if you have a .edu email address, you should check to see if your school is part of the MSDNAA. They give out free software, including Windows 7 Professional along with other OSes and developer programs. I am currently using Windows 7 Professional for free!
I'm a student, but my address ends in @student.tue.nl! NOOoooo.
Oh well, so it goes.
I can better this one the beauty of msndaa, had a copy of 7 professional since beginning of september! Ahh it feels good to be lucky. O yeh best as well it was free Well good for a poor student!

I wonder if this will come out on the very last day.. I also wonder if it will be usefull. My real concern in all of this is the lag that I get after sliding the keyboard out. I can type a sentence before it gets half way done.
Another thing I wonder is, will this forum crash when the update is released. There might be so much activity that server bogs down.
F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 X infinity
All the noobs will be posting redundant threads,
*** DID YOU SEE THE NEW VIDEO DRIVERS ARE OUT****

*** DOES HTC GET THE BOUNTY*****OMG VIDEO DRIVER FTW****
*****AM ARE DRIVERS OF DA VIDEO .EXE .CAB****
*** HOW DO I UPGRADE MY VIDEO DRIVERS I DONT WANT TO SEARCH AND I HATE THE WORD WIKI/STICKY*****
Then there will be people like me (forum whore) making snide comments here and there, testing things and reading everything...
Lastly there will be folks like Mr. Tater (the local Celeb) and Dutty, making things happen.. Cooking and making new apps
I can see it all now.. Thats when the servers heart gives out.. Too much joy (from the driver release) and just being overworked will kill it.

Than what? To add useless comedy to a useless sinking post. At least I added a possible chuckle or entertainment to this thread.
But your post, yes your post was the most usefull post i've read all day.
I'm afraid i might disagree... i can understand when a webserver goes down due to the workload... and i can imagine this happening to xda-developers.com.
What i can't imagine, is a webserver taking a whole machine down with it (as in.. not replying to ping). That is weird.
In any case... you Seniors... should calm down please! You're the example WE Juniors should follow
Well I don't really think the machine will go down but I do think the connection might bog down. I think it's happened before on this server about a month back. This is a pretty big site. ...
Please follow my example, search, help, have fun, be funny etc etc.

Have you guys ever worked with webservers? If you have multiple sites on one server. I could totally cause the machine to go down. Also, yes, it could suck up all the bandwidth and prevent connections to any sites on that machine. Let alone, improper coding Could peg out the CPU causing issues for the other sites. That is why I say dedicated or co-locate if you have a big site.
I remember ping flooding people on dialup. Create a batch file that pings over and over. Most of us don't know how well this server is built and what it's connection is. If all the tilt/kaiser/voda/etc/etc users hit at the same time, I'm sure there will be problems.
The drivers are a myth.

Yup. But webservers are just fancy computers so they are vulnerable to anything.
I know that at least one app has been developed for iPhone to work with the PSN (on PS3) so that a person can see their friends list, so why can't it been done with Windows Mobile? I don't see how it's not possible (but, I'm not a developer, either).
You CAN see whether your friends are online and their status within a browser at http://www.us.playstation.com/PSN/Home, btw.
I will keep my fingers crossed in hopes that there is something out there for this or that someone would be able to develop a simple app for it.

I know... I would use this all the time. On my way home from work last night I was just thinking "man, I wish I had an app to see if any of my friends are on PSN right now". It'd be so helpful.
But, only a dream as of now. I wish someone would jump on this. If they did I'd be sure to donate to 'em.
The only programs you need to make an app are notepad and a compiler. It sounds more simple than it is though.

BSODroid is my first Android application. It is a proof of concept implementation of a flaw in Windows Vista, which is so far unpatched (although Microsoft are due to start distributing the patch any moment now), that allows a user to send a Blue Screen of Death to that computer over the network.

You don't only need to type in an IP address. If you know the computer's host name then you can use that instead. For example, if Computer 19 in Comp Room 2 has a name of "CR2PC19" or something similar, then all you will need is to put that "CR2PC19" in the IP address field (without the quotes), and it will still work.
I should note though, try and only play with this with your friends. Crashing other people's PC for no good reason isn't cool. Especially if they've got unsaved work.
Behave.

I haven't used this program yet, but if you have to enter the IP address manually, try this:
192.168.1.1/24
Replace with whatever broadcast address you are using. It is worth a shot, I use that with nmap and all the other programs I use.....
EDIT: I looked at the screenshots. Just try to enter what i just said before and see if it works. I cant test this anyways as I use linux throughout my whole network at home.
Have almost broken 1000 downloads! (Currently at 950)
If anyone's interested, go ahead and give it a try from the market!

Ok everyone. I tricked you. Obviously from my posts yall know I love Android. However when you saw this title I bet you wanted to argue with me about it. Well guess what. I have a website I just launched where you can do just that. Informal Debates is a debate community and I desperately need people who want to join the site. I come here because I know you guys know your stuff (about Android at least) and I trust you guys. If you want to join, please do http://www.informaldebates.com
Oh and Toast, please forgive me for stepping out of line. I know this isn't specifically Android based but I figured this may help slow down some of the inter debating that goes on here. If you want to delete I understand don't blame you but this is my reasoning.
MOD EDIT: Moved this to off-topic for you, as it fits better in there than in one device forum

Man I have been looking for themes for Vista and the only ones out there I can find want you to buy a third party app for $20 to install them on my laptop.
M$ site has zero themes for Vista even though you can change your theme where you personalize windows (right click desktop>personalize>themes)
I have googled enough to know that I need to patch Vista to allow third party themes but I am leary to do that when I know nothing about the sites I would be downloading from.
Just need a nudge in the right direction. Want to change the look of Winblows. Not just colors and background. Really kind of like to find an Android type theme.
Any help would be appreciated.
Running Vista Home Premium SP2
Considering going to 7 soon though and there appear to be a lot of themes for it out there but don't know if they need the third party app. M$ has like 4 themes.

Also, you can check on one of the boards on 4chan, I think it was wallpapers. There is usually a guide on how to theme desktops. That's where I learned my stuff from, and I had some crazy themes, and you couldn't tell it was any OS you know.
And before anyone says something, 4chan is a great site for many things. Its only looked down upon because of the /b/ board. And whatever you do, don't go to /b/, trust me, you won't be normal anymore. Not saying you are normal now, but you know what I mean.

Yes people still use it. It is a solid OS. And Windows 7 has been out long enough that it is getting near stable enough to switch over to so I will be migrating soon.
I hate that about the time Micro**** finally gets an OS working then they come out with a new one. Why not wait until the **** works right before releasing it?
Finally got around to playing with Rainmeter. Steep learning curve but fun to play with.
