BSODroid - BSOD any Vista machine on your network! - G1 Apps and Games

BSODroid is my first Android application. It is a proof of concept implementation of a flaw in Windows Vista, which is so far unpatched (although Microsoft are due to start distributing the patch any moment now), that allows a user to send a Blue Screen of Death to that computer over the network.
Main thread in Development section, but I just thought I'd post it here as I know that most Android users seem to check this section for Android applications, rather than the Development section!

Sure does, and some builds of Windows 7 - although lucky not the final RTM version!

Yup I am causing BSOD's on my bros Win7 laptop every 30 mins and he has no idea why its happening. I'm a sneaky bastard I know but he should have taken my advice and habe updated to the RTM.

Glad to hear you're having some fun with it! Feel free to give it a rating / comment in the Android Market, if you see fit.

Would this work if we targeted the broadcast address too?

Hahaha! I screwed my roommate while he was playing world of warcraft
I bow down to your creation sir! hahahaha

Video available! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIy_d94tDmQ

As much as i hate windows, and puzzle over the almost universal affection for it, what with linux becoming so userfriendly over the last few years i see no merit in sharing this application. It can only be used to cause trouble.

If only you didn't need the IP addresses...I could wreck havoc on my school's network with this.

You don't only need to type in an IP address. If you know the computer's host name then you can use that instead. For example, if Computer 19 in Comp Room 2 has a name of "CR2PC19" or something similar, then all you will need is to put that "CR2PC19" in the IP address field (without the quotes), and it will still work.
I should note though, try and only play with this with your friends. Crashing other people's PC for no good reason isn't cool. Especially if they've got unsaved work.
Behave.

I haven't used this program yet, but if you have to enter the IP address manually, try this:
192.168.1.1/24
Replace with whatever broadcast address you are using. It is worth a shot, I use that with nmap and all the other programs I use.....
EDIT: I looked at the screenshots. Just try to enter what i just said before and see if it works. I cant test this anyways as I use linux throughout my whole network at home.

Have almost broken 1000 downloads! (Currently at 950)
If anyone's interested, go ahead and give it a try from the market!

getting force close when trying to execute bsod.

I wonder if this will come out on the very last day.. I also wonder if it will be usefull. My real concern in all of this is the lag that I get after sliding the keyboard out. I can type a sentence before it gets half way done.
Another thing I wonder is, will this forum crash when the update is released. There might be so much activity that server bogs down.
F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 X infinity
All the noobs will be posting redundant threads,
*** DID YOU SEE THE NEW VIDEO DRIVERS ARE OUT****
**WILL THIS WORK WITH MY TILT****
****CAN THIS WORK WITH MY VODA PHONE*****
***** CAN I STILL USE TOMTOM*****
*** DOES HTC GET THE BOUNTY*****OMG VIDEO DRIVER FTW****
*****AM ARE DRIVERS OF DA VIDEO .EXE .CAB****
*** HOW DO I UPGRADE MY VIDEO DRIVERS I DONT WANT TO SEARCH AND I HATE THE WORD WIKI/STICKY*****
Then there will be people like me (forum whore) making snide comments here and there, testing things and reading everything...
Lastly there will be folks like Mr. Tater (the local Celeb) and Dutty, making things happen.. Cooking and making new apps
I can see it all now.. Thats when the servers heart gives out.. Too much joy (from the driver release) and just being overworked will kill it.

Than what? To add useless comedy to a useless sinking post. At least I added a possible chuckle or entertainment to this thread.
But your post, yes your post was the most usefull post i've read all day.
I'm afraid i might disagree... i can understand when a webserver goes down due to the workload... and i can imagine this happening to xda-developers.com.
What i can't imagine, is a webserver taking a whole machine down with it (as in.. not replying to ping). That is weird.
In any case... you Seniors... should calm down please! You're the example WE Juniors should follow
Well I don't really think the machine will go down but I do think the connection might bog down. I think it's happened before on this server about a month back. This is a pretty big site. ...
Please follow my example, search, help, have fun, be funny etc etc.

Have you guys ever worked with webservers? If you have multiple sites on one server. I could totally cause the machine to go down. Also, yes, it could suck up all the bandwidth and prevent connections to any sites on that machine. Let alone, improper coding Could peg out the CPU causing issues for the other sites. That is why I say dedicated or co-locate if you have a big site.
I remember ping flooding people on dialup. Create a batch file that pings over and over. Most of us don't know how well this server is built and what it's connection is. If all the tilt/kaiser/voda/etc/etc users hit at the same time, I'm sure there will be problems.
The drivers are a myth.

Yup. But webservers are just fancy computers so they are vulnerable to anything.

I know there is a few bitorrent apps, but I am looking for a lime wire app. I found Pocket G2 Pro but it is def dead as I think the last update was made in 05 or 06. I just think the phones are getting fast enough to really start using software like this.
P.S.

I agree with JstarLuvsTina. Personally I am shocked this thread is still up. First off most of the big cellular providers are monitoring usage of this sort and will not hesitate to cancel your phone plan if they find you using such software. AT&T is a big one, they have even put out press releases about this on their site. I wouldn't be suprised if you will eventually see such applications blocked from being used on devices and data cards.
blocked? that's nonsense... p2p is legal the only thing that's not is the things the people choose to share... but you don't have to try it. Im just tryin' to help people that are asking for something.

I would because of the legal ramifications as well as the impossibility. How do you "block" an application from being on a data card? You don't block applications from being on a hdd. You aren't blocking it from being on a flash drive either. Now blocking ports an app uses is another thing, but even then, it's as simple as using another port.
Its ridiculous to say that this thread should not be posted... If it’s not illegal it’s a valid topic and a question.
And besides why would someone care about one wanting to run any software on his ppc if its not against the law… (and frankly I wouldn’t care if it was against some law I dont work for the police, but that’s just me and a totally other matter)

Please link to this Press Release. That would be unreal. I pay for a teathering plan and if they started terminating people for using legal software I would imagine it would be a law suite. I use Torrent software on my phone racking up Gigs of downloads and never heard a peep out of ATT. I don't see why this is such an out there request. I want to make this phone like a full PC, with TV out, then a wireless keyboard and mouse.

win741.com - Windows 7 student upgrade- $29.99

so I know this has pretty much absolutely nothing to do with development, other than the fact that an OS is where most of the stuff starts, but I just wanted to share with you guys that if you have a .edu email address (a student address) you qualify for the student upgrade to either windows7 home premium or Professional.
for more info go to win741.com.
Mods will probably lock this or move it, but I just had to share this with a community that has given me so much!

just FYI - this is all through windows, and is 100% real.

I mean, it's a nice gesture, but it really doesn't belong here, especially not in the development section. If you doubt yourself, you probably should steer clear of posting.
Besides, Android caters particularly to the Linux constituency, so, you know.
Again, thanks for the info, but some advertisement about a new Windows version is entirely unrelated to the development of the Android platform.
i know its in the wrong place, in the wrong forum completely. I also know that Linux is the primary for android, but I just wanted to share and get this out there. Like I said in the OP, just wanted to give back. I could have posted this is Dream general, but honestly, who would have looked there...?

Well, if you have a .edu email address, you should check to see if your school is part of the MSDNAA. They give out free software, including Windows 7 Professional along with other OSes and developer programs. I am currently using Windows 7 Professional for free!

It's strange, it's only when scrolling in Finder. After some research, I found that it's called the "ripple", but no solid answers. This started happening randomly after I decided to use the 9600GT card to get better graphics for a few weeks. Once I switched back to the 9400M to save battery life, this started catching my eye.

Yea, seems like a driver problem, but I'm not that good with macs. Check the nvidia site and look for the most recent drivers.

I appreciate the help . I'll check it out.
edit: As far as I can tell, both drivers are not on the site. The closest they get to Mac OS X is linux...It seems to me that Apple uses their own proprietary versions of the drivers, just like they do for Java. Software Update shows nothing that pertains to gfx drivers...
Damn apple. lol. Try checking the system update, maybe you will find a driver update there.
Lol.
I checked System Update and it only shows a java update and some misc program updates that don't deal with graphics...Oh well. I'll keep looking, thanks for the help.
Worst case scenario, format. Fixes everything. lol
As much as I'd love to...lol
I just restored the harddrive maybe a month ago, after Ubuntu self destructed on me...For some reason it just went all Chernobyl one day...Wouldn't connect to wifi, ethernet, wouldn't build android anymore...And my computer felt hot enough to cook on. Literal meltdown.
I then realized that I could dual-boot Snow Leopard and Leopard, and that I never needed Linux in the first place... I should have partitioned a little more evenly, though, as I made Snow Leopard the majority of the HDD...but I only really use the 50gb Leopard partition I made for Android development...
lol. I just need to stop failing...
you could always make a timecapsule back up to a big portable hd, then restoring from that. it probably won't sort anything as it will just restore what ever is happening, but it always worth a try. i've tried it to fix a few problems, can't remember if it did help.
Turns out the GPU is at fault. Apple is replacing it, fo fweee. So happy, as I'm out of warranty and it's a $300 part.
Thanks for all your suggestions!
Lol @ $300 part. I will not go into detail of Apple's pricing.

windows mobile users dont really have an image. I think it is because you hardly see any in real life. Most phones are supporting android/blackberry/ios. I know one person who still has a WM device (HD2) and I tell him to put android on it all the time. lol

That's just it, just about everyone I know IRL who wanted a Windows phone gave up when they couldn't find one they liked and just made the change to Android.
The last person I knew who had Windows mobile only kept it so long so he could keep his precious tethering (on edge no less since he had the Dash that wasn't 3G capable). I told him repeatedly that he could tether with android, but whenever he called the TMO store they said it wasn't possible. Finally I just disconnected his laptop from the web & tethered to prove to him it was possible.
Then, he went and (ignored my suggestion of phone) got a MyTouch Slide and is pretty happy with it. Whenever he finds something it can't do, I point him at a free app that'll take care of his problems.
So, in my experience, the Windows Mobile users image is that of people who just don't research and are afraid of change or were holding out hope for WP7 (which is another discussion for another time).

We're too busy getting on and using our phones to care
Honestly though, our typical view is probably similar to the typical android user, but not ginger
View ourselves maybe like Neo (with all that ROM hacking)
Viewed by iPhone users as some big scary moster, and by BB users as BB users are viewed by iPhone users, and by Android users as Old Father Time.
Needs one more column: How seen by xda developers!

Ha. Actually its the complete opposite. Windows mobile users had all the features that you are enjoying on your android device many years ago, just on fairly slow hardware and an unusable interface. You might want to look up how xda-developers started

Yes and Windows Mobile phones were the most hackable and customizable.
Then, as Microsoft seems to LOVE to do, they assumed they were #1 and no one could ever possibly make anything better, so they just stopped giving it the attention it deserved.
They then lagged behind the rest of the smart phone world. The users who still currently use them

Not trying to be insulting to the phones, but as you said, while revolutionary and groundbreaking, the phones themselves were almost impossible to use because of the horrible interface and slow hardware. By todays standards, the OS is lacking.
In a few years, I'll probably be saying the same about Android in its current incarnation.
Windows 95 was a game changer when it came out, but I think that anyone still using it has got to be pulling their hair out by now.
I know how xda started, I had an account long ago with an email that no longer exists & a password long since forgotten
hahahah this is great!!
Love it.
The first one with the baby is by far the best.
lol WIN /10char
