windows mobile users dont really have an image. I think it is because you hardly see any in real life. Most phones are supporting android/blackberry/ios. I know one person who still has a WM device (HD2) and I tell him to put android on it all the time. lol

That's just it, just about everyone I know IRL who wanted a Windows phone gave up when they couldn't find one they liked and just made the change to Android.
The last person I knew who had Windows mobile only kept it so long so he could keep his precious tethering (on edge no less since he had the Dash that wasn't 3G capable). I told him repeatedly that he could tether with android, but whenever he called the TMO store they said it wasn't possible. Finally I just disconnected his laptop from the web & tethered to prove to him it was possible.
Then, he went and (ignored my suggestion of phone) got a MyTouch Slide and is pretty happy with it. Whenever he finds something it can't do, I point him at a free app that'll take care of his problems.
So, in my experience, the Windows Mobile users image is that of people who just don't research and are afraid of change or were holding out hope for WP7 (which is another discussion for another time).

We're too busy getting on and using our phones to care
Honestly though, our typical view is probably similar to the typical android user, but not ginger
View ourselves maybe like Neo (with all that ROM hacking)
Viewed by iPhone users as some big scary moster, and by BB users as BB users are viewed by iPhone users, and by Android users as Old Father Time.
Needs one more column: How seen by xda developers!

Ha. Actually its the complete opposite. Windows mobile users had all the features that you are enjoying on your android device many years ago, just on fairly slow hardware and an unusable interface. You might want to look up how xda-developers started

Yes and Windows Mobile phones were the most hackable and customizable.
Then, as Microsoft seems to LOVE to do, they assumed they were #1 and no one could ever possibly make anything better, so they just stopped giving it the attention it deserved.
They then lagged behind the rest of the smart phone world. The users who still currently use them

Not trying to be insulting to the phones, but as you said, while revolutionary and groundbreaking, the phones themselves were almost impossible to use because of the horrible interface and slow hardware. By todays standards, the OS is lacking.
In a few years, I'll probably be saying the same about Android in its current incarnation.
Windows 95 was a game changer when it came out, but I think that anyone still using it has got to be pulling their hair out by now.
I know how xda started, I had an account long ago with an email that no longer exists & a password long since forgotten
hahahah this is great!!
Love it.

I know that at least one app has been developed for iPhone to work with the PSN (on PS3) so that a person can see their friends list, so why can't it been done with Windows Mobile? I don't see how it's not possible (but, I'm not a developer, either).
You CAN see whether your friends are online and their status within a browser at http://www.us.playstation.com/PSN/Home, btw.
I will keep my fingers crossed in hopes that there is something out there for this or that someone would be able to develop a simple app for it.

Here's what workshed's "myPSN" iPhone app looks like:

Just sneaking in here to bump it up.
Yea this sounds like it would be an awesome app. If I was any good at programming I'd try it. But i'm not even sure what programs people use to make apps for mobile phones.

I know... I would use this all the time. On my way home from work last night I was just thinking "man, I wish I had an app to see if any of my friends are on PSN right now". It'd be so helpful.
But, only a dream as of now. I wish someone would jump on this. If they did I'd be sure to donate to 'em.
The only programs you need to make an app are notepad and a compiler. It sounds more simple than it is though.

Hey guys,
I got my Xperia in early October last year, and it was my first encounter with Windows Mobile. Like many of you I've had mixed feelings towards this device. I do think it can be a great phone - if you put some effort into it and with the help of the xda-developers.
But I took some time and wrote down everything that has annoyed me over the past year with WinMo and the Xperia. I thought it would be interesting to see if there are other Xperia owners out there that share my opinion
All That is Bad About Windows Mobile
So, is this article a load of cr*p or are my objections valid? Any feedback would be appreciated, thanks!
/Lars
Ì think you summed up about everything I know I hate - and love - about WM. Amen brother!
i agreed with you, but i prefer winmo 6.5 over the iphone, the blackberry and the e71.
Totally agree, and I started in somewhat the same situation.
The X1 is my first experience with Windows Mobile phones, even smartphones for that matter, and I found it horrible in the beginning. The only thing that has made it even harder for me than you is I use Apple pc's so I can't update my stock-rom without lending someones Windows pc and sure as hell can't try stuff like switching rom's!
i agree about the xperia bits and windows mobile 6.1 - but windows mobile is changing - the 6.5.2 builds with the buttons at the bottom are a huge improvement on the 6.1 we have at the moment and the Marketplace will also change Windows Mobile for the better
Agreed on most of it (99%) and laughed a lot, but FRACKING LOL'D at this:

......but don't forget that there is a reason for the absence of those features... Why?...
...because.....
IT'S A GAMING MACHINE!
I agree too .. problem is there is no perfect device.
iPhone quite limits the software. No opera mini. No AVI playback.
WebOS and Android are still a bit young. We must wait. And in the time of X1, WebOS was not known and Android was just an infant.
WM plainly sucks, but most things can be fixed and it is actually possible to live with it.
Read the list but can't share all of it. I'm not very sensitive to GUI aspects because the critical items are one-timers mostly and you don't touch them every day. My point is that all the other fancy stuff on the market like iPhone and Android are basícally nice as well but they still are islands in a productivity kind of view. I need my windows/exchange connections and frankly, WiMo does the job. I need my particular range of software and I can get them for WiMo, I can't get that stuff for iPhone. An iPhone for me would just be "a phone" with web access but that's not what I carry that device for. I got my Spb 3 and got rid of the panelmanager (never found out what the heck I shall do with it anyway), got my street/air navigation stuff and my ERP system to run on it and I'm happy. I'm not after Facebook, I don't need strange themes every day, I don't even need weather because that's what I see when I don't stare at the screen but lift my neck (move muscles) and watch out of the window, the ones made of glas. Sometimes I think that I'm "just a happy customer" because that thing does exactly what I was expecting when I put my money on the table. Most of the things on your list I never even came across when using mine on a day-to-day basis. But I use my SE to do the job, it's not my job to do something an the SE.
Cheers - Susan
Well put!
+1 for "totally agree"...
all the frustrations ~and yet all the love too ...
Was my first WinMo too -and yes it took several weeks of trial and error(s)
Had it not been for XDA I'd have given up, but thanks to all the great people and stuff here (and my interest /patience /application) I now love my Xperia
Couldn't live without it
Thanks for all the excellent feedback! I was afraid the article was too long for anyone to be bothered reading it
Looks like you both agree and disagree with me, and that most of you have a love-hate relationship with WinMo as well.
@orelsi - do you follow Battlestar Galactica too? Frakking awesome show!
Great article. I agree with all of the minor irritants about default WinMo interface. Since I never really use MS built-in features and rely almost exclusively on 3rd Party (prettier) apps I don't really care about ugly touch-unfriendly interface.
However, for the uninitiated I can see that this could seem like a very large barrier to entry. I would have thought MS would have done to the old WinMo interface what they did with DOS and Win95/98. Hid it underneath a much prettier shell and NEVER see those old 3.1 style menus (unless a REALLY want to).
When people see my phone sometimes they ask about it and usually I can't recommend they buy it, unless they are pretty tech-savvy. Which I think is a little sad because I love my phone so much, and I wish everyone could get a device as capable as mine, but instead they settle for cruder devices.
Oh well, I am happy with mine, and maybe 6.5 and 7 will bring a little more for me to play with and recommend to others.

What do you think about it? Is this is a really revolution?
I think this phone looks very nice with a stunning UI. The technical specs are nothing special, but this could be quite a hit i think.
thats a savage ass phone, you kno what would be sick tho if you could change the color of all the LED's on it two from blue to like purple or something. It's linux it should be fully customizable like that
I love the look of this phone. Very appealing. I will be interested in seeing more about it.
This would be the perfect MP3 Player. But for a smartphone, I do not know if it will offer the extreme flexibility of any of the four TRUE smart phones: Symbian S60, Windows Mobile, Android.
Does this phone have a file system, etc? Also, does Palm Pre and Palm Pixi have a file system and file manager too?
But I've seen this phone before, and I was excited, and still am.
I just don't expect it to be smart-centric. I expect it to be more like a Zune HD experience with some "quasi-smart" features like on the iPhone.
Original Poster, I think you should compile links on the first post and make this the official ELSE anticipation and discussion thread.
More Links http://else.bz/
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amk7XzgMcTs&feature=related
But there are a few things I would like to know more about this phone.
*Judging by the Flash Videos, the keyboard on the phone sucks (but there are some pretty cool features). But the reason why it sucks is mainly due to the layout and size of the keys both in portrait and qwerty.
*I haven't seen any file manager. Will it be on this phone, and how complex is it?
*Speaker quality?

He was talking about the buttons being on the right side of the phone. Easier for us left-handers to use. I don't think you can change hardware location in settings
Use it upside down maybe!! too bad for you!! Does look interesting, but not entirely better than tab bars and such.. it does have that added sliding left feature and I guess it being capacative would not require much tension from the thumb. I am always up for new technology to push the limits.

Wow, maybe the device will not only have rotate orientation buy also flip orientation. That would be awesome!
It's all going to come down to how they market this phone. It looks great and definitely has appeal to those of us with a technical background and who love customization. But what carrier will they market it to? Can it be customized to settings that people find interesting such as led colors, programs, etc? and the biggest one: WHO will they allow to carry the operating system. Getting google to back this would be great, getting Nokia to make a phone able to support this would be great, but which one will have the advertising budget to challenge Apple and the like to the duel that will occur when this and the next generation of iphones is released? A small company like Access is going to have a really hard time trying to compete with Motorola, Nokia, Google, Samsung and Apple especially.
I'm sorry for reviving a dead thread, but does anybody know the name of this phone and the maker? I think the phone failed to launch and the maker went out of business and that's making it hard for me to find any information on this. A name should help, thanks.
The Linux based smartphone have actually been out for awhile. I think (Don't hold me to word on this) there is one called tuxphone. But I'm not sure if that's Linux based when I think back on it...

And windows mobile have to be the biggest piece of **** i have ever had the unfortunate pleasure of dealing with.
The htc hd2 is such an amazing piece of hardware but windows mobile completely kills it.
Why would you even think about doing something like this?
And what software are you talking about? wm more the android?
I cant even find a bank of america, pandora, last.fm simple apps like that for windows mobile.
You are not worthy of the droid.

hm, who is the troll?

A dual boot would be kind of cool. The one thing that bothers me the most about android is not having native windows office support. It would be nice to get a real MS office program on my nexus.
I hate the viewers and I'm not really sure I want to try an editing software for $15 which probably is crappy.

I think this may have its own advantages actually...although I did move from the HD2 to the N1 almost solely for Android...it would be nice to be able to use Windows Phone 7 though (thinking that the games for it would be nice, the preview is nice after all)....
Honestly, if someone made some kind of emulation for it, I'd do it just because "my phone can handle it" etc.
I'm sorry, you missed April Fools Day about 29 days ago! FAIL!

Man I have been looking for themes for Vista and the only ones out there I can find want you to buy a third party app for $20 to install them on my laptop.
M$ site has zero themes for Vista even though you can change your theme where you personalize windows (right click desktop>personalize>themes)
I have googled enough to know that I need to patch Vista to allow third party themes but I am leary to do that when I know nothing about the sites I would be downloading from.
Just need a nudge in the right direction. Want to change the look of Winblows. Not just colors and background. Really kind of like to find an Android type theme.
Any help would be appreciated.

Considering going to 7 soon though and there appear to be a lot of themes for it out there but don't know if they need the third party app. M$ has like 4 themes.

Yes people still use it. It is a solid OS. And Windows 7 has been out long enough that it is getting near stable enough to switch over to so I will be migrating soon.
I hate that about the time Micro**** finally gets an OS working then they come out with a new one. Why not wait until the **** works right before releasing it?
