I want to just use my wireless connections for access how do I turn off at&t access. If I do that will that also turn off the messaging part? I have unlimited messaging just not data. Thanks Michael
I think you can search "no data" for an app to turn it off. MMS uses data but SMS doesn't.

IM uses data also, but if you use the AT$T added Yahoo or AOL client, usually they do not charge you for login connection.
I just mainly don't want IE to connect and run up the charges..Thanks Michael
Here ya go as previous posters recommended nodata.
I was using a Razr and the voice mail worked fine, know it does work with the tilt if there something else I have to do? Thanks
Huh what do you mean?
I looked at my account today and it says I must have enhanced voice mail with the tilt, what the difference is I have no clue...I guess they can tell what my sim is in because it showed I was using a tilt..Michael
Yes, but what does that have to do with the price of tea in China?

This probably sounds stupid but If I am using my 8125 to chat on MSN and I turn off the phone and have the WIFI only on will there be any charges to me from my Cingular? I thought I read where a guy was charged somehow.
But he might have been smoking something too...
I might turn off my Media Net for a few months and if so I still can use my WIFI in local cafe shops to do MSN.
Thanks all,
you only pay for data which requires to sim card to be in (gprs, text, calls) and any account that you would log onto via wifi.
So if I am using it at home with WiFi only on my network then there should be no charges, correct?
I might be turning the Media Net off for a while but still want to get access to the emails through my LAN.
ok, if you take out you sim, can you still do it?
yes = free
no = $$/££s
but if you pay for the amount of mb you use with your Internet connection, you pay for that instead
Bobby I understand kinda what you are saying but my internet here at home is unlimited. So free if I pay my internet fees.
What I mean to ask is this. If I have my sim card still in place and go to Comm Manager and turn off the Phone Connection and have the WI FI on and my phone connects to an IP on my router, Will the data that is transfered be charged to me from my Cell Phone carrier (Cingular)?
Thank you for replying so often.

NO!!!! WIFI IS FREE!!!!!
Thats what I like. A straight answer.
Thanks
If you are going to do that, understand if your Wifi drops, the phone will revert to GPRS connection if its available. So I'd recommend you install the NoData cab as this will allow you to completely turn off any other access.

i of course understand that wifi is free, but something just came to my mind...
when you encounter an accesspoint that requires you to pay for the connection, how does it work? is it a contract with user and passwd you get to login onto the ap network, or is it possible that they charge your sim(home network of course)? i ask this stupid question because i can see some Orange (mobile operator) hotspots in my town, and just started to think about it;]
on the other hand, these hotspots require you to login prior to use WWW, but seems that you can use any other service with no limits (mail, ftp), funny ;]

Hi Guys,
I past I have some experience where I thought that I am using my WiFi for the Chat.
But infact the bill from Tmobile shows my text message bucket was used for the chat.
I clarified with Tmobile. they confirmed that the chat will be based on the SMS/ Text messaging wich will be using your SIM card not the WiFi.
That was with WM5 I do not know about WM6 though.
If you use WIFI to IM through either AIM or MSN you will be charged for TXT messaging, not internet usage... if you have unlimited TXT messaging then you have nothing to worry about.

T-mobile only cost £1 a day anyway for GPRS, so it shouldn't matter what ya do.
(Unless you live in USA, the charges may be different)

So much misinformation!!!
No WiFi is TOTALLY FREE they can not tell what you are doing on it, when you are on it, or anything about it!
If you leave the phone on and WiFi drops, it uses GPRS instead which costs money.
If you use the IM program that comes with stock firmware (from T-Mobile, Cingular, etc) then that program uses SMS for the messages and you will be charged whether the WiFi is on or not, but it will NOT be sent over WiFi. If you use that program and turn off the phone and turn on the WiFi, it will not work.
Get an IM program that uses IP not SMS.

I agree for now. I have Media Net package for 19.95 Unlimited with 200 TXT messages. So far I have been using both WiFI and GPRS this month and I have use 24 MB of usage with only 3 txt messages. I have been using MSN all month. I dont see any extra charges yet.
My $0.02
I have a tmobile wing and will be discontinuing my use of their internet services.. I want to use the phone only as a phone. I have gone ahead and cancelled my internet plan with them, but i'm concerned my phone still might be using some data services and i'll get charged for each kb.
Is there a way to turn off all data services on the phone?
I've gone ahead and make sure the mail is set to check manually, but i'm concerned there might be some app i forgot about that is set up to check automatically
I believe you can just go to
Settings -> Connections -> Connections and delete your plans, that way the phone wouldn't knwo how to connect ( i think )
yes, you have to delete like 2 or 3 settings in connections, is there a way to specify only to connect through wifi so it doesn't look for gprs?

can you provide a little more detail about which one? Looks like he has a few tools/apps
advances configuration tool
u can open the comm manager and disable data
With T-Mobile, they won't let you connect to their network without a data plan. When I got my wing, I got my wife a Dash and no data plan for her. For the first day or two she could connect to the internet via data, so I called a CSR and they told me that if you don't have a data plan, you can not connect at all. No charge by the kb crap that verizon (former customer) pulls. Once you cancel, you are good to go. No extra charges. BTW, 2 hours after I called CS, her data stopped working. I think someone forgot to pull the plug when I signed her up.
like "splayer7" said just cancle your data plan and you will be fine.. there is a glitch with tmobile network from time to time you may get data service BUT you dont get charge for it... it will stop working on its own (i know i work for tmob) IF you reall dont want the phone to connect to data go to settings ---> connections... then click on connection..you should see t-mobile data.. click on manage existing connections.. TAP AND HOLD tmobile data and you should see a submenu come up with connect and delete..select delete and you should be good....
Well, I've scoured the forums for a straight answer, but haven't been able to find one, so I'll ask here...
What exactly does the popular NoData (.cab) block in terms of functionality?
For instance, with it on, will I still be able to make/receive calls? Send/receive SMSs? MMSs?
I understand it disables GPRS, but I'm not sure what functions it disables as a result.
Thanks!

You will still be able to make/receive calls? Send/receive SMSs? MMSs.
AS I understand it it toggle a registry value to remove your data bearer ie GPRS or 3G

Works well if you don't have a data plan with your phone. I don't use data because I'm usually in a hot spot with wireless internet so I check my emails that way. I use NoData to ensure my phone never connects to gprs or 3g so I never have any unexpected charges
Right from the source...
It lists your GPRS connections, and allows you to disable them so that they won't be used.
are there any that go on the home screen?

Did you click Exit instead of clicking the cross in the top right corner? Have used nodata on several carriers and never had it connect when not wanting it too.
Another way is that if you can change the GPRS access point to work rather than internet it will not connect, but not fast transaction on PPC, smartphone used to be faster with regards connection settings.

I believe you have to hit Exit (right soft-key) instead of the "X" button so that NoData saves your settings. So open it, toggle your connections to "Disabled", hit Exit and click OK/Yes in the message box. To re-enable data, toggle connections to "Enabled", Exit and then OK/Yes. It works great for my brother and cousin on their BJII's since they don't have data plans.

To be honest had always ticked the X "and has worked" as always thought exit would close and activate connection, but just tested set it and use any of them, Exit or X and it works.

Hey i was wondering if someone can help me out! i just recently started getting a lot of MMS messages and sending MMS messages. Now i was wondering if there was a way to send and receive MMS messages with out using the data plan. I dont pay for the data plan so each time i send/receive MMS i have to pay. Is there a way to use WiFi connection so i dont have to pay and i can send/receive for free? Is there some settings i need to change? or some programs i can dl? or there is nothing i can do!
Thanks!

You could always attach media in an email. That uses WiFi.
Hope that helps.
that wont work cause i would like to recieve and send to people cell phones not to email!
In Settings -> Connections -> Connections you could set you settings to "My Work Network" which it usually assigned to WiFi (you can check in WiFi settings)
MIGHT work but I'm not 100% positive. And even if it did, you'd have to stay connected to WiFi all day or for an access point to just Send/Recieve to see if you got an MMS message.
OR I do believe theres an option through activesync that you can use your computer's internet through your phone. So that would probably be your best bet.
Hope that helps.
Does AT&T still charge data for MMS messages? I read somewhere they don't anymore even though MMS still uses data.
http://howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1484340
MMS is under your messanging package.
I have a family plan and in that plan it is unlimited messaging (SMS and MMS)
I also have unlimited data so I need not worry.
On the other hand, when another member of the family plan gets a MMS message, it will cost them the $0.25 per KB or whatever the rate is now to download the MMS.
MMS uses the data connection to get the message.
Got in deep charges once with that on an older phone.
MMS will ALWAYS use Data. Such Is Life.
That is true but i spoke to someone at ATT since i have unlimited text messaging...mms is free....yes the data starts up when you send/receive mms messages/downloads and will stop right after its done....and with unlimited text its free...theres a reason it is but i dont remember why!
Hey guys the G1 data plan is getting too expensive for me and I'm planning to cancel soon. After I call in and cancel, how can I get my G1 to stop trying to access the internet unless its Wifi? Or once I cancel I won't have to worry about this?
I also heard a rumor about changing the APN settings so you can still have and use the internet? Is this true?
no real way to stop the phone from accessing the web since even in the background it sends packets of information. that's just how the phone works that's why you need the data plan for this phone.
i want to cancel the plan cause my sis is paying for mine and i dont want her paying 300$+ a year on me. but i dont want to be charged after i cancel the plan cause my g1 is still accessing the internet. Anyways to prevent it from accessing the internet?

i just said no there is no way to to shut off the internet due to the fact that the phone requires you to have a google account to run it even if you flash a adp build and skip the logon proceedure the phone still access the web in the background without you knowledge you will still get billed for data charges at t mobs data rate which i think is 25 to 50 cents per meg used.
disable auto sync
if you disable auto sync you wont be accessing the internet much (assuming you don't have a ton of news widgets or something) then sync when you're connected to wifi (toggle settings works well for this)

the problem is even with auto sync off the phone still polls the internet in the background for updates and other things you could remove every internet reliant app off your phone and it still polls the internet it just the way android is designed he want to stop all internet traffic which is impossible without hacking the rom beyond what we do or pulling out the sim. even google maps requires to poll the internet in the background without him even turning it on. it's just impossible to stop it completely.
Install APNdroid.
Easiest, simplest, most reliable way: Go into settings>wireless controls>Mobile Networks>Access Point names, then click on each one and hit menu then delete. You will also need to finangle with tmobile through their customer service number in order to get them to cancel 3g for your G1 (they have some kind of a policy that's supposed to mean that you have to have an unlimited data plan with the G1, but if you're patient with them they'll let you cancel and just have voice.)
Even easier way. Download Toggle Data from market. That's what I've been using since I cancelled my plan. No more data in the background, so my battery life is longer. Sometimes my phone goes like 2-3 days without charge. (Of course without using wifi)
apns not only control how the phone connects to the internet it also handles how it connects to make calls which is also how it connect to edge/3g. so see the conundrum we have here removing all apns also kills making calls.
Before I bricked my G1, (I don't have a data plan) I just went to the T-Mobile store and told the guy what I could do to stop the internet. He just changed some kind of port number and stopped the internet so I don't get charged.

Data Sync > Google > Background Date Usage [X]
APN Droid only kills the data.

No, the APN controls cellular data (internet and MMS) only. Voice and SMS are "built in" so to speak - as long as the SIM matches yoru carrier's records, they will work.
Deleting the APNs (or using APNdroid) will block cellular data, leaving voice, SMS and WiFi internet unaffected.
