Hero SMS issue fixed yet? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

It has been months since I have used a Hero ROM, I loved it but the SMS thing was just too big of a killer. So my question simply is, has it been resolved yet to work 100% of the time? And I mean 100%, not even a message out of 50 dropped. I really do miss using Hero and am dying to switch back if SMS is out of the way.

Been fixed for a while. Would've been easier just to check any of the Hero ROM threads and see if there have been any bug posts dealing with missing SMS...

ROM Help... please.

I looked in the forums before posting this and only found one or two threads that sort of helped. lol.
Long story short, I have tried ROM after ROM after ROM, the first few weeks they all seem fine, but 2-3 weeks after a new flash they all turn flaky. Since I use my phone for SMS, MMS, email, internet, and obviously the phone itself, I need something that can encompass all those features but REMAIN stable. My biggest issue I usually run into is my constant switching between landscape and standard mode causes my phone to lock up and my screen to go all white or criss-cross and stick showing both landscape and standard modes about 5-6 times a day. This has happened on every ROM I have tried.
I need a WING ROM that has all those features, a decent page pool size, 6.1 based (or has threaded SMS), and preferably does NOT have the cube lol. I am not a fan. If anyone has recommendations for me, please let me know and either provide a link or the version and author of the ROM you recommend (so I know what to search for). It's been awhile since I have been on this site, or any ppc site, so I am not up to date on what's the most currently cooked ROMs.
Just as an FYI, I am currently using Open Touch 4.0
I use the same rom, and constantly IM, use the phone, MMS, Internet, and Text. Whatevr rom you have the phone will go slow while switcing from Portrait to Landscape mode, its slow when you are on the stock rom. The only adive is to just download whatevr programs u need if u want more, or try to cook your own rom. Open Touch 4 is very stable and is a very good rom, although i dont understand what u mean by they become flaky after 2-3 weeks
I know the switch is usually slow, the speed isn't the issue, it's the fact that my phone will completely lock up and require a soft-reset if I switch between views too often/quickly. Aside from what comes stock on Open Touch 4.0, I have only installed iContact, Yahoo2Go!, and Slick.
As far as the become flaky part... after a few weeks of use it seems the performance of my phone takes a HUGE dive. Things start locking up far more often. I will start getting odd messages/error messages I never had pop up earlier (and I don't install anything new or mod the phone in any way after I flash to a new ROM and install the 3 previously mentioned programs), the phone will randomly reset itself, my email and MMS will stop working, it will have sudden issues with EDGE (and when I call T-Mobile they say everything is fine), etc etc. lol. I think my phone just may be possessed! I was actually thinking of switching back to the stock TMO ROM and just upgrading. I don't know if that would work better for me or not. lol.

take the phone and go to the latest tmboile rom that was released. this should resolve any minor issues that may have happened during previous flashes. Next try itspapadiamond rom. it is not HTC home based and is battery status based. It has so far been the most stable rom i have been using. You must also remember that messages take up space on the phone and if you are not deleting the messages you will inevitably fill the phones memory up with texts and also clearing your browsing history every week is also helpful. i filled my phone up with that garbage and it ran TERRIBLE. third what programs do you have running in the backround when your switching from portrait to landscape.
The only things I have running usually are Messaging and ActiveSync. Do you have the links for the lastest TMO ROM and the itspapadiamond ROM? If not, I will find them. I just don't know if there are specific version numbers and if so, those would be useful so I don't come across a thread saying it's the latest ROM and it in fact... be outdated lol.

100% SMS/MMS success rate on Hero ROMs?

To begin - I, like anybody else who lurks these forums constantly mashing their F5 key during work, love the variety of ROMs, developers, and themers Android currently has. I mean...I'm able to simultaneously keep a highly stable AOSP ROM as well as an excellent Hero ROM on my phone. (Thank you Drizzy and Cyanogen)
Currently, I have Cyanogen's latest and Drizzy's Haykuro Hero release. I've switched back and forth between JF-based ROMs and Hero releases as they've come. Now that Rosie is virtually lag free, I love Hero. My ONLY issue is the SMS/MMS success rate others are reporting. I can't say I've missed any with Drizzy's current Hero, though I've gotten some late. Part of my job somewhat depends upon messaging and responses at the right time. (Don't tell me to get another phone for work)
My question here is: Has anyone proven a 100% messaging success rate? I'm almost scared to upgrade once Drizzy releases 1.0, fearing that I'll end up losing messages (Just because of the variety of people's responses to this issue, nothing against you Drizzy)

i did a test on jacxheroski's latest last night and got 26 out of 26 test sms. i havent tried mms yet. i am running switch rom and move back and forth between jacxrom and this hero rom. as far as i know everyone running jacxhero latest version has been getting perfect sms results - this particular build uses haykuros mms.apk build from a long time ago
I'm on Jacxheroiski's latest and haven't had any missed SMS that i know of haha, no one has said anything yet at least about me not responding to something they said and I text a lot so I'm sure I would notice if something got skipped in a conversation.

Eclair and FroYo ROMs - need recommendations

I'm having some issues with my G1 with 3G and data connectivity in general. I'm not posting to ask for help on fixing that, although I won't object to help, I'm posting to ask for two ROMs for both Eclair and FroYo. I need to discount CyanogenMod since those are the main ones I run and it happens in both to a degree and my troubleshooting will be better if I know it isn't a ROM specific issue.
I'm aware that there are known issues (with no fix) that others have with both Eclair and FroYo releases of CM right now but it seems different and I want to be sure that it isn't my phone. The reason I'm posting to ask for recommendations is that I'm sure a lot of people are aware there are a lot of ROMs floating around that are little besides blatant rips of other people's work. I want to avoid that since it won't help at all and if it is a rip of someone elses work it will give the same results.
i tried like 6 or 7 Froyo releases the last month
for me the best 2 are:
Froyo Redux (CM 6)
SpeedTeam Froyo
in Speedteam: i got a problem with the market. downloading stopped working after a day of use with it. besides that, its really nice and fast!
biffmod it had FC's every 10 seconds with the "ime_input" blabla, fu**ed me off, so i deinstalled. couldn't really test it.
froyo redux: it begins lagging after a while of use, but i used it the most until now! like for a week or so! it reacts fast when getting a call, looks nice (install launcherpro for more speed in launcher/homescreen) menu's go really fast and it loads really fast too! For me the best Froyo by now!
chromatic : the style was to dark
SuperFast/stupid Fast: after install i had many FC's -> Deinstalled
Super-F : works fine the most but has problems with some files and cant play mp3 files !! WTF ??
Hope i could help u a little

Try: Htcclay Superfly d/s v1.1 - Froyo 2.2
http://androidspin.com/2010/08/07/rom-htcclay-superfly-tcby-v1-1-for-dream-g1/
Absolutely love this one. Market slow on this one but that seems to be on all of the 2.2's.
Thanks for the replies I've given Chromatic a try while I waited for replies and it seems to be the most reliable for 3G that I'd tried to that point. I switched out to Cannon's Eclair as well and that seemed to be good too. Chromatic seemed a little sluggish but no more than other FroYo ROMs. The main sluggish thing that I can't stand is text entry using the virtual keyboard. That seems to be a constant across all FroYo ROMs so far.
tranceonline, you saved me a lot of flashing with that summary so yes you did help I'm going to have a look at FroYo Redux in a little while.
crz6662, testing out the one you recommended now and it seems about the same as most FroYo ROMs, do you notice any stuttering when using the virtual keyboard? It seems to be a bit on / off like it will work for the first letter or two, freeze while you're pressing keys and then a second later you'll see all the keys appear. I can't stand it >_< I don't know if it's the ROMs, the keyboard IME or a combination of both.

Can't say I've noticed but I usually use the keyboard anyway since it's a bit faster for me. You could download couple of the other on screen keyboards out there and see if it's the same.Try this one: attached Handcent. If it works on Froyo. Noticed a screen flicker on CM 6.0.0 though. Might just be my phone.?
I've learned a couple of things today, playing again.
Main reason I rooted/flashed was for apps2sd. Don't put upfront tasks, ie: Homescreen launchers, on-going service apps, mail, messaging, etc. on the SD, leave them on internal memory.
I was putting everything on the SD and it took forever to reload home screen coming out of an app and returning home. Don't ask about rebooting. It took forever to load the widgets and get up and running. Got to thinking about the slower speed of the SD versus the phone. So after installing approx 150 apps I said screw it, wiped everything, and reformatted the card.
Dropped swap to 32MB, ext2 512, & fat32.
Now I'm being careful what gets put to the card. Homescreen now boots and loads much better from the phone. Was reading about partitioning and in some cases larger swap slows up the phone considerably so they say. Why the 1 ROM I did suggested 96MB for swap is beyond me. Just don't run a "bunch" of apps at the same time and you won't need much swap. Some have suggested eliminating it altogether. Don't know bout that.
Much snappier performance now. Boots up fast and 3G is no problem.
Might hold off loading apps and try that Froyo Redux 1st. Haven't seen that one.
Later. Learn by doing

Need help with some issues

Hi all,
I'm trying to figure out if I want to just return my captivate and go back to my iphone, or if there's a way to deal with this thing.
My issues are basically:
Browser perfomance is ****, to say the least. Panning and zooming on most sites is painfully bad - XDA worst than pretty much any other site out there. When I try to type in the browser, I'll hit 10 keys, and 3 will show up...a few seconds later another 2 will be entered...etc. Zooming is bad, I don't know why. Panning just looks jerky/non-fluid.
Bluetooth: I have an Acura with the tech package, so having bluetooth work is kinda a requirement. However, every time I try to do anything bluetooth related, the phone slows to a crawl. If I hit the home softkey, it takes 1-2 minutes for the phone to go home. I eventually have to pull the battery to reset.
Data: Sometimes, it just drops totally. I'm sitting still with 4-5 bars, and suddely the marketplace won't load...or XDA won't load...try a second or third time and suddenly it loads fine. Unsure if this is just the marketplace (and XDA forums) being unreliable, or if the phone's data connection is just THAT bad.
GPS: I did the fixes in the "hidden" settings (supl settings and whatnot) and I now get fixes much faster, but they're always off. I seem to always be on AGPS, and not ever getting sattelite fixes...that, or the settelite fixes are just really as bad as AGPS is.
Perf in general: not so hot. Some things work well, some things will crawl at times.
Facebook: no push notifications? What?
I'm on the latest SRE, and I can flash back to the stock kernel if that'll help...
But in general, my opinion after slightly over a week is that this just feels like when I still played with Linux a few years ago - a toy. Nothing for general consumption, nothing for someone who just wants it to work - and feel free to tell me I'm wrong, I'm still not totally decided and have another 3 weeks to return this...but I'm hard pressed to find a reason to keep using this instead of going back to my iphone. A wireless AP is amazing, but that's the only thing I keep coming back to...and who knows, a jailbroken iPhone might be capable of that?
Thanks for all the thelp!
RA
Are you using JF6 (the stock baseband that came with the phone)? because that one is miserably slow.
switch to JH3 and then flash SRE... it'll feel like an entirely different phone.
I felt the same way until I flashed several firmwares and applied different mods/lag fixes. You have to find what's right for you. It seems that Samsung may have skimped on the software side but they didn't hold back with hardware. With the new voodoo lag fix that's coming out soon, froyo, an official GPS fix, and promising android development for the Captivate, I'd say we're starting to realizing the true potential of this phone. I've never used bluetooth nor do I have any problems with data. You may have a bad phone... Perhaps you should exchange it for another and see if that remedies some problems? The ball is in your court but I could not bare to go back to the iPhone (I've been using it since it came out).
Wrong section of the captivate forum to be asking questions, theres a proper section for that..., about your issues most are plassebo, try flashing a i9000 rom and give it another try.

I'll give that a try then - I did just have to call ATT though to have them put me back onto the iPhone plan, since I'm doing a trip tomorrow and will want a working phone...I'll try flashing a few more things...but tbh, I keep reading about Froyo and GPS fixes...I saw posts about a GPS fix going out a month ago...when will it actually happen?

I totally agree with the earlier posts about trying other setups before giving up on it. I LOVE my setup. UCJH3 firmware, SREv1.2.1a, Tayutama's Lagfix4. All can be found on threads here.Do it step by step and you will see a HUGE difference. The only thing that will still suck, I think, is the GPS. I find mine very erratic. But everything else is great and almost no lag.
Most of your issues are non-existent on the stock ROM - so either you borked something while customizing or your phone has a hardware issue.
The browser should work without issue. GPS is broken, and none of the fixes do much so that we have to wait on Samsung.
The phone is in its infancy. Remember ios 2 on the 3g? Well apple learned a lot and there software is always polished. You may want to wait for the next android support phones. Apple did a good job this time around but the touch screen interface needs too many steps and the home screens are too cluttered I want to put icon any where putting them in groupings helps my eyes and brain navigate. I'll trade the gps and a few bugs for that any day. Phones are supposed to be intuitive, the iphone may be easy but I'll argue all day that is not intuitive. Android may be less easy but I can make it intuitive, it takes a little time and a few market apps though. That's why I chose this phone, but I don't knock iphone users, just the fanboys.
If you like to tinker ands it sounds like you do you may just get addicted to this thing.
The data problems may be do to the stock software, do a reflash of jh3, with the original I couldn't switch from wifi to edge or the other way around without killing the app and restarting it. I haven't noticed that problem lately with jh2

Facebook is badly broken on all Android phones I have ever used. There's a Link to an app called bloo here on XDA I think it's in Hero CDMA apps section. It has notifications and chat.
I found Bloo http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=679556
Yeah Facebook for android absolutely blows. Not just push notifications but the whole app. One of the worst apps I have on my phone. Like today, i had 2 notifications of ppl writing on my wall. When i go to notifications and click on the post to read the end of it, it opens in the browser??? Honestly??? Makes me back out, go to my own profile and then go to the wall. That's crap. Facebook for iPhone is better than the Facebook website, yet i would almost rather delete my Facebook account than use it on android.

[Q] Why did cyan's Roms run horribly for me?

Just absolutely the worst rom I've ever had on my phone, and I've ran Pulse roms and half built sense UI roms.
I wiped my phone and cleared the partitions but it was always the slowest thing in the world.
The wifi never stayed connected
Gps never ever ever worked
after an amount of time using the rom
it would suddenly not accept incoming text messages
Tons of bogus **** like that.
Anyone else have this problem? I'm currently on speed team Eclair and it's working marvelous, just like the htc clay / fast test 1.6 roms with the 10MB hack.
(mind you these were his new releases, not so much his every day nightlies, but his stable and unstable ones)

Its the kitchen sink problem.... which has two forms;
1) The more bloated big crap you throw down the kitchen sink, the more plugged up it becomes.
2) If you throw in even the kitchen sink, then you've gone WAY too far (related to the phrase "everything but the kitchen sink", which is to say you've packed too much useless crap).
In other words, it is a big fat pig. Just picture yourself a 350 pound fat woman waddling down the street. There's CM ROM for you. Moves just as fast.
Funny you should say that SpeedTeam Eclair is actually themed/botched/molested CM5 (which ran like crap for me ).
I'd suggest trying a straight-up AOSP Froyo ROM which does not use CM kernel.
I also am having many issues with Cyan's roms these days. I'm not even running Froyo, I'm running CM5. Random stuff will happen a while after wiping/flashing. Last time all my Google apps would just force close no matter what I did. This time the Market stopped working. Logs say it ran out of memory and was killed. I killed all non-essential services (which only give me 20-25mb of memory) and cleared app data for market, cleared caches in recovery. I'm just getting fed up with it.
I want a new phone so I can get some stable-ness back in my life, but Tmobile isn't releasing many cool phones like the others (Tmobile's Galaxy S design was disappointing).
Can anyone suggest another rom to run on my EOL G1 until something good comes out? =\

Yep. I'm running CM6 and it is super slow and unresponsive, constantly crashes, no apps2sd so it runs out of space immediately and won't accept incoming text messages, apps won't install or update, background notifications don't work in any app? etc. Swap makes the phone run so much better, but Cyanogen says "Don't use swap" with no explanation. I don't understand why this 3D gallery is installed by default when it can barely crawl along on this processor. Did they even test it on a Dream?
Man I have had nothing but problems. Now the browser won't connect to the web, but Gmail still updates. I can't install anything in the Market, it just says "Download paused". etc etc etc. I tried uninstalling so I could reinstall, but that doesn't work. So now I don't have Titanium Backup because I uninstalled it and can't reinstall it. >:[
