Help me to connect my HTC Dream to computer. - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know this question is noob, but please forgive me guys, I've just got my phone this afternoon.
I have done a search on this box and on the web but not found any solution. Could you guys please help me to connect my HTC Dream to my computer? I have install HTC Sync 2.04, but it doesn't recognize my phone when I plug it in. And, by the way, can I connect to internet through my computer, like the way I did it with my O2 Atom Life through Active Sync?
Thanks so much.
I have download HTC Sync and follow the instructions found on the website, but I didn't see any notification shown that my phone has connected to the computer. So what do I do now?

Plug in your USB cable to the pc and the phone. After a second, go to the phone and slide down the notification shade (the top bar) you should see a thing that says USB connected. Tap that. Then a box will pop up and ask you to mount your phone. Tap mount and your pc will register it as a removable disk.
When you are finished, go back to your phone and slide the shade back down, tap the USB connected thing again, then click unmount before unplugging the cable from the phone. This will save the sd card from becoming corrupted.

That should be the way to read the MiniSD card from computer shouldn't it? I have done that and I still find that I can't make HTC sync work actually. The issue is, can my phone connect to internet through my computer?

The Dream is a Google experience phone. The firmware is built from the Google source code and nothing more. HTC Sync requires an app to be installed on the phone which I believe is wrapped up in the HTC framework. Our google phones don't have those frameworks by default so, we can't 'push' it back in.
It's included on the HTC Branded phones (Magic and Hero) so ROMs ported from those devices do have it included and of course the required frameworks. Thing is, hardly anyone uses HTC Sync, so the ROM devs remove them to make 99% of us happy. Sorry, but the Dream was never intended to use HTC Sync. If you're desperate, flash Haykuro's 6.0 ROM.

So does it mean that my phone will not be able to connect to internet through my computer, or is there another way round? I prefer connect this way, since wifi is not always available in my place...

USB Issue.

Hello there,
I've been searching around the internet now for about 3 hours to no avail, I have even resorted to emailing HTC for help. Thats how desperate I am.
I have a MDA Vario III (HTC TYTN 2) that has worked flawlessly for a long time (since christmas) but has suddenly stopped communicating with Activesync.
Im not bothered about syncing contacts etc, all i want to do is use the file browser to download and upload photos etc.
I have tried all the suggestions i have found so far (enabling adanced network functionality, disabling it, reinstalling Activesync etc.) to no working answer.
Can anyone help me?
raty
Not sure if you tried this or not. Delete your existing partnership and then reconnect it. Good luck. Activesync sux.
Hey,
I've deleted the partnerships off my vario3, and completly reinstalled activesync. Still didnt work.
Ive taken the phone into the T-mobile shop i bought it from, they seem a little too keen to send it off for repairs, maybe this is turning into more of a regular thing that i thought?
Kept onto the phone just for now, I wnt to try and fix it before i send it off.
Uh... why send it off if you fix it?
read through this thread and look at post #10 and see if your computer is detecting the device at all..
also try removing your simcard and microSD card and connect your device to your pc in bootloader mode and see if it says USB on the bottom.

It's probably the Notification queues have lost their active sync bits
use Pocket IE or Opera (mobile) to download and install something like MemMaid or SKTools
you can then add the Active Sync components back into the notification queues, and then rebuild them
Once done you should be able to sync etc
notification queues! What is that?
First I ever heard of that. I am having active sync issues as well and I have tried everything in this post.
Nothing works, it connected a few nights ago and it all of a sudden stayed connected all night. I am Back to having problems again.
Does anyone know if avast will hurt active sync?
here is your answer...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=362679
read thorugh EVERY LINK and you should be good
ive read through those links and none of them have a fix for me.
The computer recognises my phone, in device manager it comes up under Windows CE USB Devices as HTC USB Sync.
i shall try the bootloader idea and report back.
@Kimtyson- if i fix it i wont be sending it off, that would be obsurd
@pjwilkin- i have never come across that before while reading about the titan, fancy sharing some knowledge?
Just got my phone into bootloader (thanks wiki) and when the usb cable is connected it says USB and the computer starts to install drivers etc.
***bump***
sorry thats not proper foru etiquet but im desperate for som answers
Some further things to try
Can you connect via Activesync using Bluetooth? What about on other PCs and on other USB ports on your PC? What happens if you delete that HTC USB Sync listing in device manager, unplug the phone, reboot the PC and then reinstall Activesync 4.5 (I use the CDROM the phone came with the phone for that)? See if you can get the phone shop to plug it into one of their PCs with Activesync or WMDC.If it's showing up in your PCs device manager then it's likely some sort of problem/configuration issue with your desktop PC it's connecting to - not a problem with the phone itself.
this has happened to me ..
i vote for changing usb ports..
you probly already did so..
please post when you fix it..

this cancels out any hardware problems... so do as the previous posts mentioned, its all good advice.
im assuming that all activesync services etc load up ?

Looking for advice/suggestions (Please)

I recently purchased a wizard/mda (tmobile) and have run into major problems trying to unlock and upgrade the device.
This forum is a wealth of information, but I have hit some major problems.
The main problem is being unable to unlock it.I researched various posts around here, and have not been able to get activesync working.I looked at various troubleshooting info from microsoft and around here as well and have not been able to sync the phone with my computer.
I thought that perhaps it may have something to do with the version of xp I have installed, after spending many hours (25+) trying to get it to work.I then tried on another couple of comps and still no luck.
I am beginning to suspect that the phone itself has a technical problem.I seen the workaround for transferring cab files between the comp and the phone, and am hoping that once I have a mini sd card there is some way to upgrade wm5 on the phone. Can I unlock the phone without syncing it, using a different technique?(perhaps bluetooth or ir?)
Looks like I will have to unlock the phone using an unlock code, without syncing to the computer, but I am looking for any and all suggestions that may help out. I even tried attaching files and emailing them to myself, but wm5 doesn't support attachments.
Throw a dog a bone, before he buries this phone!

Im not an expert into this - all I can give you is couple of general ideas - maybe something you already knew but I'll give it a try
IMHO flashing via BT or IR can't be done or could be very risky.
Did you try hard reset? No change? Did you try hard reset and then skip installing those cabs that are installed automatically after HR?
You could try to download software WM5Storage into your htc, install it, activate and then you can access your phone as USB mass storage device from your PC. I've used it with my SD card only but it looks as it could use internal memory of your phone too. With this you can check if the data can be transfered via the mini USB.
Does your PC see the phone? Saying something like "installing new device drivers" or something like that. Check device manager.
Can you charge the battery in your phone from usb?
Btw I can't remember exact process of unlocking/flashing - is it really necessary to have synced the device before unlocking/flashing?
Following up.....
Thanks for the ideas, MuF123.
Some time has gone by.....
I tried the hard reset, and that didn't make a difference.
I was able to sync via bluetooth using a friends laptop, but was unable to sync via usb on the same computer or on my own.
I installed WM5storage and my computer doesn't see it as a mass storage device, even though it charges the phone via usb.
I am looking at this:internal error 2356 activesync.cab that comes up when I try repairing activesync, but it was a dead end the first time around.(maybe the answer is deeper there somewhere?)
I really like the phone alot, i think i will try picking up some external memory, and see if i can't use one of those unlocking services to get it up and working with a local cellular provider.
Thanks,
Nacho

Pc wont recognize captivate

I bought a Captivate with rogers on 2.1 update 1 today and when I connected it to my PC it wasn't recognized, installed the drivers and it's still stubborn. I booted into Ubuntu 10.10 and still same problem! I can't stand it it's driving me crazy! there's no reason why it should be doing this but I can't make it work!!! Please someone help I am really desperate
There are several reasons this could be happening. A search will come up with all of them. For me, it was the USB port on the computer. It didn't like the remote ports. Once I plugged into one of the ports directly off the MB, works everytime.
You might never get it to work
I've been reading these posts and trying suggestions since I got my Captivate back in August. I still have not been successful in getting any kind of reliable connection between a computer and my phone. This is my second phone and I have tried 5 different computers. One of the computers was tried with Win XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7. Nothing seems to get me a reliable connection. I hope you have better luck. I get a wild hair every now and then and spend a few more pointless hours trying to make it work but to this point nothing is working. I've tried Kies, Kies mini, old drivers, new drivers, 32 bit drivers, 64 bit drivers, etc. NOTHING HAS WORKED. I've managed to be able to mount my drives and copy files occasionally but no kind of sync where anything is automated. Also I have found nothing that can get me any sort of contact or calendar sync with Outlook. My work prevents me from putting everything into Google mail and syncing that way so I'm just out of luck with a phone that ATT told me I could sync with Outlook. Maybe Froyo will fix this or else I have to wait my year until I'm eligible for an upgrade to get a phone that actually works properly (ie, non Samsung), although I have to wait for OTA Froyo since Kies won't be of any help in upgrading anything!
This is the best drivers i found to make it work on my Vista box.
http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/MOBILES/Samsung/Samsung-Galaxy-S-USB-Driver-for-Windows-x86.shtml
The USB drivers from Samsung's website seem to be pretty bogus.
If the ones from the link above don't work you can go here - and download the USB drivers for your OS there. I have tested both and they work great on my computers.
And... if your running Vista - IMO That is Issue #1

LOL I refused to run it. For some reason my systems refused to run it and I always ended up going back to XP.
Now with Windows 7 - I think Microshaft got it right (as close as they can) and its what Vista should have been to begin with

This may seem obvious, but I didn't see it mentioned here. Do you have USB debugging checked? I remember having that issue back in July, when I was just a little noob

Usb debug is only for adb to work. You can still mount/detect the phone without it. Windows should detect it as a usb mass storage .

Thanks for the response. I've had debugging turned on and off. Neither seemed to make much difference. I did find one interesting thing the other day though. I uninstalled all Samsung software and drivers. Before I tried any kind of reload I used a registry cleaner to clear out any remnants. It seemed to act a lot differently when I reloaded things and I actually managed to sync my calendar and Contact List although not with Kies or any Samsung software. I used a program called MyPhoneExplorer. It takes a while to figure out but seems to work well if you have a decent phone-computer connection. It only worked once though and the next time I plugged back in there is no connection. There was a time when I was hopeful that Froyo would fix this but now I'm doubtful that the Captivate will ever get Froyo, at least from Samsung or AT&T.
I totally do not understand this phone when connecting to my PC. I am sooo sick of this thing not being recognized and trying to connect with Kies!!! I would run better odds playing Russian Roulette at being the big winner!! What other options do we have to get our phone to connect so we can load an unload our media. I dont have the space to load my whole library and wouldnt want to wait the years it would take to load it :|
I can't connect my Captivate to my Windows PC or Ubuntu through the USB cable that came with the device. I think it's the cable that's short circuited resulting in no connection so I will get a cable asap. My temp solution was an 8GB microSD but even now i tried rooting with the update.zip file and I had no luck I don't really care if my phone connects to the computer as long i have a microSD card reader and rom manager too bad for my 16GB memory but I can't even root! I hope they fix the update.zip file. This phone has killer hardware. It's such a shame how it's being brought down...

Have you tried connecting to a USB port right off the MB? I know my remote USB ports would charge the phone but were flaky when trying to connect to my computer. Moving to the MB USB port fixed all my problems. Connects everytime now.
Well I only have a laptop and I tried all the ports...
If you truly think the USB cable is bad - then I would suggest going back to your retailer your purchased it from and get another one.
Also - if you want to ROOT your phone - you should still be able to. I would download the CLShortFuse's 1 Click Root application. Then you can copy the update.zip from inside that application's folder and copy it to your internal SDCard like you have been doing then flash as normal.
It will not include SU or Busybox I think though - or enable sideloading of applications. You will still need to d/l ROM Manager and get busybox that way.
I wouldn't recommend flashing ROMS to your phone until you can get it to recognize though. Please tell me you haven't installed kies? And I would go to the Q&A sticky - it has the 1-click root app as well as the USB drivers I recommend installing to have your phone recognized.
I install the usb drivers for xp and never had an issue with 2 home laptops and 2 work laptops. Wife's windows 7 machine i did not even have to install drivers and it recognized it without issue. Make sure you are using the cable that came with the phone as i have had issues with other micro usb cords that did not come with the phone.

I tried the USB drivers you posted on another PC and USB cable and it worked like a charm!
Thanks alot!
If all you want to do is copy media you can get by without Kies I believe. All you should need is a proper driver setup for your computer. Once drivers are loaded and recognizing the phone all that should be left is to mount the drives on the phone. Just be sure to have the phone in "Mass Storage" mode instead of "Kies" mode. I can't get Kies to work for me but from what I understand the only real benefit of that is for doing upgrades, I might be wrong though since it doesn't work at all for me.

Exactly I've read on Engadget that 2.2 finally came to Canada but kies won't work for me either all I want is to root my god damn phone on 2.1 update 1 to get the gingerbread ROM from supercurio as soon as it's stable but I can't even root

So i got my wp7 today...i download zune on my windows7 pc, install, connect the phone....ERROR installing drivers, the phone is seen not as a mobile device, but as a generic usb composite device...in the device management window i have two "unknow device" icon...tried EVERY POSSIBLE SOLUTION i found on the internet...worked for others, not for me...
...then i think maybe it's my pc, so i try my xp netbook...SAME HAPPENS...
previous owner says he connected the phone to zune flawlessly on three different PCs...
i also did a full reset from the settings
HELP I'M DESPERATE
anyone?
It seems that your device is in diagnostic mode (the 2 unknown devices are typical for this...)
for now there is no way back, but if this is without you hacking something or so you could let it repair by warranty...
is it a complete new device?
thank you very much for the answer...
this is getting intresting
my situation is similar to his one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=937235
but that image isn't showing up on my hd7 and my two devices are "unknown devices" no shubert, just unknown device.
(EDITrobably because he has his pc set up to receive the phone in diagnostic mode, but my pc isn't)
Now what i think is that the previous owner did some tethering (he told me that), but didn't put it back into zune mode...then he did a hard reset before giving the phone to me...but i'm pretty sure the reset doesn't FLASH the plain rom, but only wipes data because it's too fast
so i'm stuck here with a half usable wp7...nice

Did you try right clicking the device in device manager and selecting update driver software, then click Search automatically for updated driver software?
Mine kind of did the same thing until I allowed it to connect to microsoft and got the driver from them.
Also you could also check HTC website for HTC HD7 driver software.
Yep, but it doesn't find any driver...even if i point it directly to the zune drivers folder...the only driver that seem to get installed is "windows phone USB device" or something like that..i have to install it manually, then one of the two unknown devices transforms into that wp USB..the other one remains unknown, unless i force it to install "Windows phone" from portable devices->microsoft...then it fails and give me error10, but still the icon changes to the portable device one...
From HTC i will probably get vague or dumb answers...like "try hard reset"
Tomorrow i will see the guy who sold me the hd7 and try to connect to zune on his pc...if it works i have to keep it otherwise he will refund me...he says he tried with hd2 to tether then uninstall the tether software without putting it back to zune mode and he says that it works with no issues...HELP
i maybe wrong, but maybe u can try to load one of those rom's for europe brands, it may re set all the settings on your hd7...
but the best will be for the first owner to show you the way he did it...
so when he didn't put it back into zune mode there is no way back at the moment..
i will tell you if i know more...
the diagnostic mode isn't set on your computer... it's on the Qualcomm SoC (System on a Chip)
The drivers you need are somewhere http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=922000 here (don't know exactly where)
but that won't help you much as you only get "HTC Diagnostic Interface" as Serial Device...
so you have to wait till there is a solution....
btw. I'm stuck in the same situation ;-) (Diagnostic Mode) xD
and there are lots of other people too, so you are not alone ^^
best regards
EDIT:
@truffle1234:
i tried flashing another rom a few weeks ago, but it didn't help...
so it's better for all to stay with the stock-rom at the moment because we cannot get back to it at the moment
it's better for warranty
So if the phone is in diagnostic mode, it shouldn't properly connect to zune on the previous owner's pc,right? Let's see
it shouldn't connect normally at any pc...
ok, did the same on his pc so i got refunded...now maybe i go omnia7...the loose volume rocker and the visible sim card through the back cover have really bugged me in just one day...in any normal company who's responsible for that crap would be insta fired...i mean, didn't they produce any test device before sending the papers to production???? meh...
wp7 was nice btw
got another hd7 (no see thru battery cover, and no loose volume rocker this time!) and connected to zune flawlessly...so definetly that one was stuck in diagnostic mode
Great news, hope you enjoy it. It's a decent device and a great OS!

well should be more than decent as it's supposed to be the top of htc wp7 line...but still...
i got a 2nd hd7 just because i hate big bezels around the screen...if omnia7 had a smaller case around that 4inch would definetly have been my choise
is there a fix for this? I feel like throwing my phone out the freaking window. ugh!!
What exactly is your problem turbo? What OS are you using, etc?
Here's what I can say about this.
Install Zune. Reboot your computer. Let your computer FULLY boot.
Plug in your phone. Seriously be patient and let your PC think for a good 3-5 minutes. The first time it goes through this it is NOT a quick process.

[Q] HTC One Drivers....

Hi All,
Had my HTC One delivered first thing this morning (ordered yesterday @ P4U and arrived in Saturday post so mucho chuffed with them) but I have a problem with connecting the device to my laptop.
I'm transferring across from an iPhone and therefore need HTC Sync to do the full transfer of everything to the new device.
Downloaded HTC Sync Manager and connected the phone. The phone show "USB connected" and "USB Debugging Connected" across the banner at the top but then on my laptop it asks to install the driver. Windows is unable to find automatically and when I manually set the drive location as per the HTC Sync Manager install drivers folder it say it cant install the driver.
I've trawled the net but can't really find anything that solves the problem. Called HTC and they weren't much help to be honest and said to just try uninstalling and re-installing HTC Sync Manager (which I've already done 3 times!!!) :fingers-crossed:
Can anybody help? Really dont want to regret changing from an iPhone but after 3 hours and still not being able to connect the blooming phone to get it up and running so I can have a proper play I'm beginning to lose faith
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hmm, reboot laptop, tried different usb port, you sure usb debugging is enabled? try unchecking fastboot in power options?
Have you tried disabling the debugging

What message do you get installing the driver? And what OS?
For the drivers on the galaxy nexus toolkit on windows 8 you had to boot into a special recovery mode to disable driver verification before they would install... maybe you're seeing something similar?
Thanks for the replies guys. In the end I gave up with my laptop after trying to connect an external hard drive that I'd used in the past and that failed to configure the drivers too...grrrr!!
Ended up borrowing my parents laptap and not surprisingly the phone connected first time. Still took me around 12 hours to copy all the music (using home share) in iTunes to get my music across to my parents laptop. Long hard slog but after a couple of days usage, 100% sure I made the right decision to convert!
HTC sync manager is buggy with windows 8 if that helps...

Don't rely on checking for having the latest version of HTC sync using the "Check Updates" from the HTC sync software on your PC. It's not accurate.
Go to: https://support.htc.com/alerts_downloads/en/HTC_Sync_for_all_HTC_Android_Phones
That resolved the issue of my HTC One not being able to connect to my PC.
Hope this helps.
I for ONE have always had issues with HTC drivers and Bluetooth. In my experience their Bluetooth kinda got a little shoty after dual core devices came out but has improved with the ONE. As for drivers been trying to get my device to properly install all day... Windows 7 sync is annoyingly automated and ADB crashes about every thirty minutes with it sometimes less...
Windows xp recognizes my ONE as a camera! Lol my win7 machine reads it just fine. Lol. How do i get it to read normal? Btw, im installimg htc sync right now.
i finally got my one to work on xp by uninstalling HTC sync, installing windows media player and disabling USB debugging then it was recognized after searching the net for time nothing came up till i read multiple forums and added the info together. cheers
