I installed a new 120 GB hard drive with no problems. I already purchased a copy of Windows 7 HP not Pro or Ultimate. Should have but didn't, too late. Anyway, I did the upgrade and now can't get the shift to recognize my external DVD drive as a bootable source. What do I do now. Is it possible to take a DVD copy of Win 7 and put it on a USB drive and create an iso file? Is there another way to get my shift to boot from a DVD that I am not aware of. I only get the option of booting from the new hard drive which is blank. I really don't want to have to buy another copy of Win 7 as a download. Is there a link to still download the Win 7 rc file? Any help would be great.
Alright, got windows 7 mounted to a usb drive and installed on the Shift but now I can't seem to get any of the drivers to install. I just get a error message about not being able to open the zip file.
are you in windows 7 ?
If you are in Windows 7, and you copied the drivers from HTC over to your device, copy them again from your device to another folder on your device, then start driver install.
Copying files from a remote source often blocks the files.
Then, if you are in Windows 7, there's a particular order to install the drivers, i gather you have discovered this yourself already.
Not being able to open a zip file. Try unzipping all the drivers on another computer then and copy them to your shift, then move them to any other directory on your shift (to release the files)
Windows 7 really works like a charm on the Shift. I don't know if your version has AERO on it, I hope so as even with aero it's really fast.
Yes, I finally figured that out. Unzip them first then install them. Sometimes I can't see the forest for the trees. I was then having problems with wifi, 3g and bluetooth. I accidentally tried to install the control center drivers with the compatibility mode set to xp accidentally. Everything is working great now. Sometimes I need to slow down a little.

I am having trouble mounting my kaiser using Ubuntu linux distro. I know this is a bit of a long shot but I am using Hardo Heron (8.04) and have just downloaded a new ROM wondering if it is actually possible to mount in Ubuntu if not ill just stick to windows
I also use HH... never tried, but can your use activesync through wine?
I'm going to go find out...
EDIT: Wine will not recognize the .msi extension. I tried Multisync too, no luck, even with the extension lib for all devices. Hmmm....
http://www.synce.org/moin/SynceWithUbuntu
That will let you sync the device with Ubuntu - you can also get a list of the files on the device, but I've yet to discover how to browse it. I'm sure it can be done, however.
To precisely answer your question, yes you can litteraly mount your phone with linux and then you can browse with nautilus or konqueror for example.
Have a look at FUR here : http://www.infis.univ.ts.it/~riccardo/FUR.html
I can tell you that active sync definately doesn't work through wine. Wine will recognise .msi files, you have to install it like this:
Code:
$ wine msiexec /i setup.msi
however, when AS starts, it doesn't recognise USB connections. Didn't try with Bluetooth or WiFi but according to winehq, theres not much chance of it working.
I hear people have had luck with WM5torage but i personally haven't. Just copy whatever to sd card, place into a reader and mount normally or bluetooth the files across. I've found this is the only way.
Hi guys
I have done this twice before (last year), each time it has taken forever to do, lots and lots of searching. This time around I am posting the info in one place!
I am currently running Windows 7 64bit Beta, this info should also apply to Windows Vista (x64 i guess) if you are having problems
1. Download Vmware (I recommend vmware player its way less bloated and you can build your custom vmware install over at easyvmx.com IF you go down the vmware player route rather than workstation/server/etc)
2. Install a copy of XP (Beg/Borrow/Steal - I just tested XP SP3, the time before would have been SP2)
3. Google Active sync and install it in the vmware install of XP
4. Install (again within the XP vmware install) the attached file in this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=418446#post3299749
Carry on updating as per normal
(Grab a copy of the rom in question, extract the archive and then place a copy of HimaUpgradeUt_noID.exe into the folder with the extracted rom contents - Again all within the XP vmware install)
If you are totally stuck for getting a XP box to upgrade on, and you are geek enough to actually upgrade a rom installing XP in a vmware setup is easy!
PS, yes there probably are 323235 other methods to get the job done, but these are the steps It took me 4 hours to work out today.
Off topic, If <insert random company here> had their way, most of our devices would be in the bin due to being outdated crap (software wise)! love the work every one on xda-developers.com does, including but not limited to the guys pushing out new roms for us!
Extra off topic, SimCity 2000 for windows mobile ROCKS!
Hi, that lokks like it is worth to be attached to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=428469, cause it seems to solve the problems under WM 7beta and Vista 64-bit.
So guys I'm really getting sick of using Windows XP and want to upgrade to Windows 7.
I'm just wondering how the best way to go about it after I've got the ISO burned or whatever, like how to copy my files etc. without any corruption. Also W7 will work with any hardware if I'm correct so it won't matter that I have outdated hardware?
Basically, can anyone give me a step-to-step guide on how to upgrade from scratch.
Any help appreciated guys.
I think when you insert the disk with windows running you'll have an upgrade option which will backup everything, install the new OS, then put back everything the way they were before (by everything I mean, registry entries, documents, user settings...)
or you can boot from the disk and choose click the upgrade button.
It's an easy process, but it took me a few hours to upgrade from windows vista to 7

actually the upgrade option is only if your on vista, best thing to do is backup your files to a external hdd and start fresh
Yep. Back up your files to an external drive, insert disk, boot from CD, once you get to the drive selection menu, select the drive, drive options and format. This will clear your HD, and give you a fresh install. Also make sure you can find all the drivers for 7, and if you don't want to pay for 7, find a backup of an OEM Win 7 disk, and install with that. Might need to update your BIOS to 2.1, but that isn't always the case.
Where are the files I should be backing up? Do any files need to be backed up in like sys32 or anything or just files like music, pictures, programs etc.? Is there a way I can backup program data too? The likes of favourites and bookmarks for chrome etc.
How do I go about checking/updating my BIOS?
If you're going 32-bit to 32-bit you can put the 7 install on the same partition as the xp install, but you won't have any registry keys from XP.
As for backup, music, photos etc. And usually you can find the update on the manufacturers website, it's a regular install. What MB to you have?
Back online, some editions done.
There is always easy transfer. RUN THE UPGRADE ADVISOR before purchasing though

Would appreciate assistance or direction.please.
Been working for 2 weeks on installing on My Nook Color installed with Honeycomb.
I have it imaged on SDHC card and running on Nook. Problem installing Google Apps and Market.
Looks like I have ADB installed correctly in platform tools and in SDK folde.r I have USB folder with , I think, appropriate drivers.
When I connect and then go in device manager to find driver and get to "have disk" and find the "android_winusb" (located in SDK folder usb drivers) and located the bottom where says inf file is not highlighted. Therefore it will not install.
Newbie here, but looks like not recognizing as an inf file?
Seems like I am so close and now just a puzzle I am unable to solve.
Could you or someone assist? It would be much appreciated. I have tried all searches for resolution that I know of.
Thanks.

I had the same problem trying to install the drivers on my Vista laptop. After several attempts to uninstall and re-install the drivers, I was never able to resolve it. My work around was to install ADB & the drivers on my old XP laptop for emergency use. For day to day use with my Windows Vista machine I installed ADB wireless on my Nook and it connects without any problems.

Appreciate the response, thanks.
What is adb wireless and then how did you get google apps and market on the Nook?
Wow-did some research and looks like the perfect application-thanks.
I can not find out how to download the app. I found a site that said "hit break button to see download link".
I do not know what a break button is?
How can I get the adbwireless app?
Much appreciated, thanks.
PS-If I can get that application-how do I get the Google App and Market on the Nook color?
Getting excited here!
Long story short...I have a legit Windows Phone Developer account and I want to unlock my Lumia 920. I know the unlock tool is part of the WP8 SDK, but the only problem is that the SDK requires Windows 8 64-bit. As of now, the only Windows 8 install I have is on my Samsung tablet, so I can't install it on there since its not 64-bit.
Is there a way to just get the registration tool without installing the 1.5+GB SDK? Or is there a way to do it from Windows 7?

Try this. Idk if it works, but give it a shot anyway! Extract the files and put it in a folder, then run the exe.

unfortunately this doesn't work, as it states we need a zune-connected phone. and the lumia 920 doesn't connect to zune
RE: register phone
Why don't you use a vmware image of windows 8 where you can install the sdk on it. I use the same method as I have a macbook. for win phone 8 dev I use vmware.

I think the zip doesn't work but not because it needs a zune connected phone. Instead the issue is that the tool is probably missing some common files or something like that. It asks to connect the phone to the computer and points at a potential problem with the windows phone passthrough service (although there is no problem because the device can be browsed perfectly fine).
I wish I could at least install a XAP to my WP8 devce on Windows 7...Is THAT even possable ?

Sorry for bumping this old post, but I had been having issues registering/unlocking my Windows Phone 7 Lumia 710 recently to develop.
Using Windows 7 SDKs, the registration tool with it just wasn't working - I was getting the good old "Error logging into the App Hub. Please check your Windows Live ID and password and try again" message.
Even contacting Windows Dev Support couldn't resolve this - apparently its a known issue theyre working on just now!
Long story short, I found this thread - and tried the zip file you linked and it worked! I was able to register my phone through that file instead of the registration tool that came with the SDK. So thank you very much!
Worked for me too. Thanks a bunch !!
