Wanting to upgrade to Windows 7... - Off-topic

So guys I'm really getting sick of using Windows XP and want to upgrade to Windows 7.
I'm just wondering how the best way to go about it after I've got the ISO burned or whatever, like how to copy my files etc. without any corruption. Also W7 will work with any hardware if I'm correct so it won't matter that I have outdated hardware?
Basically, can anyone give me a step-to-step guide on how to upgrade from scratch.
Any help appreciated guys.

I think when you insert the disk with windows running you'll have an upgrade option which will backup everything, install the new OS, then put back everything the way they were before (by everything I mean, registry entries, documents, user settings...)
or you can boot from the disk and choose click the upgrade button.
It's an easy process, but it took me a few hours to upgrade from windows vista to 7

actually the upgrade option is only if your on vista, best thing to do is backup your files to a external hdd and start fresh

Yep. Back up your files to an external drive, insert disk, boot from CD, once you get to the drive selection menu, select the drive, drive options and format. This will clear your HD, and give you a fresh install. Also make sure you can find all the drivers for 7, and if you don't want to pay for 7, find a backup of an OEM Win 7 disk, and install with that. Might need to update your BIOS to 2.1, but that isn't always the case.

Where are the files I should be backing up? Do any files need to be backed up in like sys32 or anything or just files like music, pictures, programs etc.? Is there a way I can backup program data too? The likes of favourites and bookmarks for chrome etc.
How do I go about checking/updating my BIOS?

If you're going 32-bit to 32-bit you can put the 7 install on the same partition as the xp install, but you won't have any registry keys from XP.

As for backup, music, photos etc. And usually you can find the update on the manufacturers website, it's a regular install. What MB to you have?

Back online, some editions done.

There is always easy transfer. RUN THE UPGRADE ADVISOR before purchasing though

Accessing system files

Windows Media Player 10 has just uninstalled itself from my BA... short of a hard reset and start again, how can I get it back? I tried a hard reset then copy the files from the windows folder but it wont let me copy them!!
For now, I have restored my previous setup, and I will try to instlal the older WMP 7.1... but its really annoying.
Can anyone tell me for example how to access protected files? Can I access the device in bootloader mode from a computer perhaps?
Thanks for you help!
I spoke too soon.. upon trying to do an ActiveSync restore after a hard reset, it tells me I cannot restore since the restore was created from a different kind of mobile device... bollocks, HELP!!!
Alright, Ive restored OK... thats that crisis over.
And post-restore, the media player prog is back in the windows folder but start icon isnt, so will put that back manually.
However I suppose my original question still stands, is there any way to access those locked system files e.g. for copying?
I'm thinking acessing the PPC when windows isnt loaded is the way to do it?

You are right. I am looking for a method to access window folders in bootloader mode or before tapping on screen. But, I didnĀ“t find it anywhere.

Now I have the problem that I have a blue screen and the navi asked me if I want to upgrade the windows mobile by USB or SD-Card. But I didn`t have the right Image i think.

What situation are you in right now?
Did you try to reboot it?
Did you back up the old image before attempting this?
Generally this thing are protected from writing images not belonging to them so unless you selected to format the flash first you may still be ok.
If not, I doubt your unit can be salvaged without a lab since ROM images for PNDs are almost impossible to come by, specially for less popular brands.
My Situation, i think i killed the flash rom, if i start the system normally nothing works, no screen nothing, but when i started with the start and the reboot button i come to the menu with a blue screen.
1. wince upgrade
2. uboot upgrade
3. exit

P.S.: I didn`t backup the Image, but i have the same system Clarion Map360 at home to, thats working. Maybe you can give me tutorial, how to backup the image from the other one, to repair the old one.
Other Question, Is it possible to put a Windows Mobile 5 System on it, to run another GPS Software like TomTom 6
Well sounds like you are in trouble.
You need to look around the menu options. Sometimes with thees devices there is an option to dump the current ROM to SD.
If it exists use it if not you probably need a lab.
You can not put WM 5 or any other Windows Mobile on this device unless:
1) You can get the original ROM
2) Extract all drivers from that ROM
3) Incorporate drivers in Windows Mobile image
4) Package Windows Mobile image to suite your device memory configuration
I other words: mission impossible.
You can try to use the cab at this link to run WM software.
hmm damn.. there is no point for dump rom to sd card... but if its possible to get this rom somewhere in the Internet. maybe somebody have it here in this forum.. because i found a thread but the link to the image is down...

Win7 upgrade after HDD upgrade?

I installed a new 120 GB hard drive with no problems. I already purchased a copy of Windows 7 HP not Pro or Ultimate. Should have but didn't, too late. Anyway, I did the upgrade and now can't get the shift to recognize my external DVD drive as a bootable source. What do I do now. Is it possible to take a DVD copy of Win 7 and put it on a USB drive and create an iso file? Is there another way to get my shift to boot from a DVD that I am not aware of. I only get the option of booting from the new hard drive which is blank. I really don't want to have to buy another copy of Win 7 as a download. Is there a link to still download the Win 7 rc file? Any help would be great.
Alright, got windows 7 mounted to a usb drive and installed on the Shift but now I can't seem to get any of the drivers to install. I just get a error message about not being able to open the zip file.
are you in windows 7 ?
If you are in Windows 7, and you copied the drivers from HTC over to your device, copy them again from your device to another folder on your device, then start driver install.
Copying files from a remote source often blocks the files.
Then, if you are in Windows 7, there's a particular order to install the drivers, i gather you have discovered this yourself already.
Not being able to open a zip file. Try unzipping all the drivers on another computer then and copy them to your shift, then move them to any other directory on your shift (to release the files)
Windows 7 really works like a charm on the Shift. I don't know if your version has AERO on it, I hope so as even with aero it's really fast.
Yes, I finally figured that out. Unzip them first then install them. Sometimes I can't see the forest for the trees. I was then having problems with wifi, 3g and bluetooth. I accidentally tried to install the control center drivers with the compatibility mode set to xp accidentally. Everything is working great now. Sometimes I need to slow down a little.

flash ROM without overwriting data

Is there a way to flash a minimal ROM to the SE X1 such that the data (documents, pictures, music, etc) on the existing ROM does not get overwritten?

You have to backup these things, like putting it on your SD card or PC. No other way.
Seriously? There is no way of me getting to my data?
I am able to start the phone (get the "beta expired message" plastered all over the screen).
I can get into the bootloader and when I plug the phone to the PC I see a Microsoft USB sync device but cannot sync with it.
Is there a way to start active sync via an autorun file on the SD card?
Come on...there has got to be a way for me to get to the data on the phone.

You cannot sync with it because your phone isn't on. As far as I know there is no other way then flashing or hard-resetting your device.
not that I heard of
the q sounds familiar, wasn't that already raised in another thread...?
Mod. edit: not dev related, moved to general

Same OP btw
on topic: afaik there is no way getting your data from a beta expired device (except the data on the storage card). And you can't flash a ROM without erasing the data on the phone.
What ROM are/were you using?
Maybe try contacting the Chef to see if he has any ideas...
I was using the Energy ROM. I already contacted NRG and he was not very helpful.
When the phone boots up, I can see the custom background image. I can also, with some messing around, get to the slide show and I see that all my pictures are there.
However, I cannot get the phone to connect to my PC via activesync (possibly because activesync is disabled on the phone). I tried to blindly navigate the menus but no luck so far. On the other hand, I was able to connect the phone to my PC using bluetooth, but for some reason OBEX file transfer is not working therefore Bluetooth explorer does not work with the phone.
If I slide open and closed the screen, I can somewhat navigate through some screens. If I hit the START button, I can navigate through all the menus, but then nothing shows up because of the white screen.
This is really frustrating because all my files all there, but just a wee bit out of reach.
I toyed with the idea of flashing with the smallest ROM I could find and then dump the ROM back to the PC and then use recovery software to try and recover the files. I would need to experiment with a second X1 just to be sure that it could work.
At this point, any ideas are more than welcome, and anything other than "it can't be done" will definitely be appreciated.
Thanks,
T

[Q]New Rom = Execute .CABs?

I am wondering if it is standard for a custom ROM to allow the installation of .cabs and the use of browsing the SD card through phone/computer to be able to add music.
My previous phone was a TP2 with Energy rom. The HD7 with mango is a whole new thing for me, im still awfully confused.
Thanks.
PS. Does anyone have any recommendations for a rom?
As far as adding music and files, that is all done via USB and Zune software. It does not offer the same "USB storage device" functionality as the old Windows Mobile phones.
.cabs are now .xap files. Typically they are deployed from your computer to your device, but someone can correct me if I'm wrong and can be installed through IE on your phone.
Just give the custom roms a whirl and see which you like. Make sure you understand how to flash one and if you need to downgrade your device first before running rspl/hspl.
Enjoy!
