Will sim free X1 work in Japan?
As long as the phone is SIM unlocked, you will be able to use it in Japan. The only providers that it will work under in Japan are NTT Docomo and SoftBank, as they both use UMTS2100.
Yeah my phone is sim free so no locks. So I have to use either NTT Docomo or SoftBank. I can't use any of the other providers?
Yes, you can't use the other providers because they don't provide service on any frequency that is compatible with the X1. There is no GSM in Japan, only 3G, so that automatically makes quadband GSM useless. au by KDDI uses CDMA technology and emobile uses UMTS but it is at 1700Mhz. NTT Docomo and SoftBank use UMTS at 2100Mhz, which is what the X1 is compatible with.

If you want to use a local sim, then make sure your Tilt is unlocked, but, to answer your question, yes, it will work.
Yes, confirmed can use, given its quad band capabilities. However, note that I'm using HTC tytn II.
I doubt it will work everywhere. As far as I am aware, Japan predominantly uses CDMA and GSM availability is more limited. If you're in Tokyo you should be fine, but when I was in Osaka 18 months ago I didn't manage to find a signal at all...
You won't find GSM anywhere in Japan but should be able to find W-CDMA/HSPDA almost anywhere.
I am right now in Japan carrying an unlocked phone. It works just as well as anywhere. There is no GSM anywhere in Japan but the Tilt also supports WCDMA which is what is used here. Usual Quad band (850/900/188/1900 Mhz) GSM Only phones wont work in Japan.
Oops that should have read (850/900/1800/1900)
doesnt Japan uses 2100mhz WCDMA band just like rest of asia and europe? The Kaiser's WCDMA band has 850/1900/2100
I just passed through Narita 2 days ago and during the layover I turned on my Tilt. It picked up a DoCoMo HSDPA signal (I was surprised!).
So, I can confirm that at least as far as getting a signal goes, there is potential for it to work. However, I have no ideas about the prospect of getting a prepaid local SIM that would actually allow you to make and receive calls.
Japan uses WCDMA 2100 Mghz. I go to Japan every 2-3 months and my Tilt works just fine, from Tokyo, Shizuoka, Fuji, Osaka, Kyoto, and on and on. Only comment, power draw on the Japanese networks is noticiably higher than US or EU.
This is why I went to Tilt, for use in Japan and South Korea. I have successfully used the phone in Japan, S. Korea, China, Finland, Germany, Holland, France, UK, Poland, Russia, so far so good.
ATT Tilt does work in Japan!
Like said before, it does work.
I used it several times in Japan, on Softbank 3G and DoCoMo.
Note that I had my Tilt flashed with the original HTC Tytn II ROM.
Also, if you want cheap calls in Japan, get a United Mobile +423 SIM.
You cannot get a local SIM if you are not a resident in Japan.
It's free incoming calls and $0.45 for outgoing to most destinations.
Works great. See http://www.united-mobile.com
The ICQ Sim from the same company (http://www.icqsim.com/) should work too, but I haven't tested it.
Hi all,
I'm thinking of purchasing a Diamond from Sprint as I liked my old PPC-6700 until it was stolen . I'm headed to Japan next month and wondered if it would be possible to use the Diamond in Japan if I buy a Softbank SIM.
So specifically:
1. Does the Diamond sold in America for Sprint come not only with a CDMA Radio chipset but also one that supports the high frequency GSM Japanese network.
2. Would the phone settings allow use on another network or am I limited to use on Sprint's network only as is the case for CDMA phones sold by Sprint currently.
thanks,
Raj

if your device is sim-unlocked and supports UMTS, you can use a softbank sim with it. we do not have gsm networks in japan.

Your sprint diamond will not work in Japan with a softbank sim. It might, however, work with your american provider by roaming on AU.
I understand X1a is the north american version which has 850/1800/2100 bands and X1i has 900/1800/2100. 3G will work well with X1a in Canada, but X1i doesn't work too well.
When in Taiwan, I had the chance to test my X1i and it received 3g signals.
I was wondering whether an X1a would be able to get 3g signals as well?
I found a site that lists the frequencies for different countries:
www.worldtimezone.com/gsm.html
Taiwan uses 900/1800 but it lists 3G as 2100, so I'm a bit confused as to whether an X1i (which has 2100) would work.
Here in my country, both the i and the a have working 3G. It really depends on what the Telcos are using.
Thanks so much for replying..
I'm using Taiwan mobile
A website tells me it uses
900/1800, but 3G is 2100
http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/cou_tw.shtml
Since the X1a has 2100, it is capable of using 3G?
I'm using Xperia X1a and taiwan mobile operator.. and i'm able to use video call,3G and HSDPA connection without any problem..
Thank You so much for this reply!
I'm in Toronto and have an x1i. I'm under Fido, and about 2 or 3 months ago i started up pick up a 3G+ signal. Is anyone else getting this? I don't have a data plan so i haven't check if it actually works.
Could it possibly be that I'm roaming??? I'm roaming icon is always on, but that may be a glitch of a custom rom that I'm using.
Thanks
I'm in vancouver right now and my X1i uses 3G connection. I thought it was because of the olympics that they set that up.

If you have the HSPA+ model, it should work just fine. Seeing as it is not working, you most likely have a different model (the LTE one) which will not work on T-Mobile's network. T-Mobile also has not turned on its LTE network for public use yet.
Hello to the community!
Looking for help regarding a Japanese KDDI AU Xperia VL.
The phone is unlocked and rooted but would not support 3G or LTE data services (in Germany) so far...
Technically the phone should be capable of it (as the V or the AX version) but seems to be limited to the KDDI frequency bands so far. How can I get rid of this limitation?
Flashing an Xperia AX ROM?
Thanx a lot!!
Don't they use CDMA based networks in Japan and not GSM based networks as in the rest of the world?
Wouldn't surprise me, if they didn't include GSM compatible hardware
In Korea and Japan they use different systems. That's easier than saying: Nokia and Motorola are not permitted to sell here.
