Its my understanding with the Tilt / Kaiser /TyTN II / Whatever-They-Want-To-Call-This-Beast-of-Burden that using Internet Sharing, AT&T couldn't track tethering except through extreme data usage. Well, according to a feature sheet for 6.1 that I noticed in another thread, in 6.1 AT&T will be able to track tethering through IS and bill accordingly! No more tethering my laptop when I'm on the Greyhound.

Stick with WM6?
I'm ticked because I just flashed to a 6.1 ROM only to find that out.

Wow!!
Then yup, that stinks.

AT&T considers "tethering" a computer a separate account/line thus unlimited which I have, technically does not allow tethering. So that's why they bend ya over for more money to use tethering with a computer. The computer is technically another line/account.

well wut if u haad the unlim. pda package and u say now they are capping it. Does the price go down? or am i still paying the 50 bucks.
doesnt it say also have?
it says "enable DUN to be used on devices that also have internet sharing." wouldn't that mean you would have a choice of which option to use.
Looks more like DUN uses IS instead of bypassing it as it does now with 6.0. Currently, you can't track DUN data usage on the phone but the carrier still sees it.
I don't see what difference this new change makes except BT DUN is not longer the bastard, red-headed step-child anymore.
Doesn't seem like a huge problem. Just use a non-AT&T firmware.
I'm confused. I tether using PAN with my Tilt. Does this new feature mean they can track usage of DUN, or both DUN and PAN? So should I be worried that I now have 6.1 on my Tilt?
i am going to florida for four days and i want to tether on my laptop so i can sling box on the comp. If i am caught tethering what is the penalty/charge? if one time monthly charge it might be worth it. also are there any pre-paid wireless internet plans from att or anywhere else?
It's a matter of time before someone cooks a rom or makes a cab that hinders or disables the reporting that you are tethering.

But thats the thing.
Technically it is NOT another line NOR account. Why do you think you have to run ICS application for the whole thing to work? It's an application that simply makes any request from your PC be made on the phone natively.
When you connect to port 23 from your computer to a domain -- your phone is simply making that socket connection, and then passing everything back to your PC. It's a proxy program.
So technically, while you play Quake 3 -- your phone is doing the work. Not another telephone, not another line. Nope, the traffic would be the same if you were playing Quake natively on your device. The ICS program just sends outbound anything from your PC and inbound anything to the device.
So I think it is poor business to charge for something just because a program on your PHONE is running. ****, they already charge $50 bucks for unlimited PDA internet, and they cap it at 5 gigs on their network. That doesn't even include tethering! With 50 bucks I can get cable or DSL.
ATT is a damn ripoff. I need to find another US carrier ASAP.
Im confused and somewhat lost....
You know... I tether almost all school day on my tilt and have no problem. I have the 40 dollar Unlimited internet plan and although, may not be the fastest thing around, but for 1.5Mb speed, I cant complain. Im also on ATT btw. I also check my bill every day as well, and havent had a charge for it (knock on wood if I am just lucky then... )
That is definitely something that would have to be implemented through the OAL. That means it's bypassable. It will still just look like data to the phone.

I wouldnt go that far...until T-Mo gets their 3G in the USA ATT is the lesser of 2 evils (and yes I'm not even including Sprint, they are dead)
Does ATT have ANY unlimited data plans?
EDIT: I was just at ATT's website and they still have MEdia Net unlimited for 15.00 a month and 200 Texts for 5.00 a month. There is also a plan called MEdia Net Max that comes with both for 20.00 a month. Now, if WM6.1 will only allow ATT to monitor the data then isn't the choice clear? Stick with 6.0 or a non ATT rom. Correct? If I'm wrong somewhere, please correct.
Oh also, I'm with a company that offers ATT but I am not billed directly by ATT and this company has their OWN plans. I just use ATTs network. This is ALSO an option. I once used over 10GBs of data tethering with my 8525. I was never charged more than my current plan. $20.00
hi:
so, att will sell me unlimited data plan for 15$ addon to current voice plan..UNLESS im using att smartphone (tilt).
i was gonna get tilt, unlock , unbrand, reflash--whatever..
then i hear that they will always know that i use their smartphone anyway and charge me 30$ / month... as someone said "like charging 8$ for gas cuz i gotta V8"
-------this doesnt make sense cuz i could always buy cheaper plan and plug sim into laptop w/proper card and not get data capable phone--but whatever-------
so, bottom line == is there a workaround to absolutely disguise the tilt?

Well I have had Cingular/AT&T for almost 3 years now. From start to present had a pda style phone with the same data plan I had when I ordered Cingular, which was Unlimited Media Net 200. Media Net unlimited data and 200 txt messages... My first phone as you see in my sig with cing is the Blue Angel SX-66 and now the AT&T Tilt which I have had for 2 months now.
Said all that to say this.. for almost 3 years.. have only paid $19.99 for that data plan and have used at most 895mb of data transfer. So I don't know how they do there thing or not but I have had no trouble with using my PDA phone with the Media Net Data Plan.

the thread you gave seemed different than my question -- the 15$ (unlimited media net) AND the 30$ plan they offer are Both for unlimited data.. the only difference they told me was smart phones have keyboard and thats what they charge extra for.. the rep exactly did say i could tether on the 15$ quote unlimited w/o probs or issues..
so , im back to orig query..

Well let me say this.. I am a truck driver and gone most of 4-5 days a week.. My laptop is connected through my TILT with Internet Sharing 24 hours a day during that week. Hence the reason why I use so much data. Almost a gig/month. I also own my own computer business and do website builds and maintance. So I NEED the internet... Between my co-driver and myself we put alot of miles so we use alot of internet to do research or what have you.. So yes to point out this is connecting my phone with a usb cable and using internet sharing to connect my laptop to the internet. I used Comm Manager on my SX-66 but didn't like the fact that the phone would become disable per say cause the phone was a modem at that point. As with Internet Sharing if you get a phone call the data is put on hold... Nice!!! So I don't miss a call...

so, youre saying that using internet sharing, there is no way to disable phone or make incoming calls just go to voice mail? if data is on hold, i assume that the site would support resume, if it doesnt, you would have to reload and start over w/whatever you are doing?

Figured ive give a NOOB a break.
Higher data usage = more likely to get flagged as abusing the service.
My experience with it has been they wont hunt down people who do 'occasional' tethering -- light usage once in a while...
When someone starts to abuse that data connection, the account gets a flag for someone to look into it eventually..
A "Razr v3" as you report to AT&T Using 20 MB of data/month is not gonna get much concern.
A "Razr v3" using over 700MB/month will probably get looked into closely....
Changing your phone VIA your account online will not change the numbers they have reported in their system. If you received a Tilt as an upgrade then swapped back to an older phone, they can see these records. In most cases they wont 'hunt' people down for small/limited abuse.
But, it is against the terms of service -- so they reserve the right to.
Like speeding, it's okay until you get caught.. and if you do, hope you get off with a warning and be more careful next time. Alternatively, just pay for the service if you like it and use it (at least that's my stand on it).
altho i appreciate the replies, y'all seem to not get what im puttin down..they told me that data usage is not an issue--its the type of device (smartphone or not); this was reps words..
but all the replies seem to tell me that if i just call and add unlimited media net or whatever its called, thats good enuf.

You can just change it all online and add media net or whatever data plan you want with out talking to anyone.. That is what I did when I added Data to my wifes fone.
And yes data does matter.. Your using there bandwidth so the more you use the more your suppose to pay. That is why if you have a PDA/Smartphone then they know it will be using more data and therefore you need a data plan to acomidate the phone. These types of phones have more features and will use more data than a regular phone. That is why they want you to use a higher data plan with more bandwidth.
Just like if you had someone hosting your website. The more bandwidth you use the more you pay. Usually $5 - $10 per gig.. Depending on host.
So like I said, I use a LOT of bandwidth on my tilt.. I use the Trackme for GPS on this site. Listen to streaming radio, use MobiTV. ETC.. so not just my laptop but the phone itself gets used alot too... and been doing this for almost 3 years on the same data plan..

Im tired of reading this thread, I am a regional technician for AT&T, I fully understand "what u puttin down" use a old phone razr, whatever u got. go to a store and have them update your account with the "razr" imei. Then tell the sales rep you want media net unlimited 15.00mo. He will be happy to do it since he gets commision on features. then when you get home put your sim in your tilt and stop complaning.
Have a nice 15.00 a month year.

I searched and found all different answers. If I tether my G1 using a different app that requires root...will t-mobile be able to differ between the stock tethering app and a market tethering app? If they can't differ, I wouldn't be charged extra...right?
So far I haven't found any definite proof on the forums. But most of the complaints I've seen were from people using the stock froyo tethering feature. So I guess if you use a 3rd party tethering app you're less likely to be caught. And anyways you should use 3rd party tethering apps because of the extra features they have.
I have been wondering the same thing.. I have been using a third party tether app to allow access to my ipod touch in my car (dont feel like buying another adapter) and i stream pandora through it and so far have not been caught or charged extra.. But like with anything else here use at your own caution. As long as your not downloading torrents, movies, etc, things that are large amounts of data you should be okay x)
Tmobile doesnt charge you for overage of your bandwith, just throttle you to edge speeds after your cap is exceeded.

They dont charge you for overage but they can tell if your downloading large files which will lead to the suspicious that you are tethering and thus they will look up your account and determine whether you have the app or not and whether they should be charging you for the service..

Well... Unfortunately it's true. HERE is the article I found.
Oh well... Lucky for me it's built into my ROM. And I will fight it tooth and nail and play stupid if it shows up on my bill.
So with flashing a custom rom with 2.2, there's obviously the "mobile AP" function that's built into 2.2.
But my question is this: with ATT coming out with a $-per-month wireless tethering plan, will there come a time when they will be able to detect if we're using our phone's built in tethering, and automatically opt us into the $X a month plan?
Also, I've read other plans where you may get 2GB for the phone's data, and then an additional 2GB for tethered devices. How can they keep track of this? Can they tell if I am using my phone's tethering capabilities.
Obviously I'd like to continue to use my wifi tethering free of charge, and not have to pay ATT for their own service, much like Google Navigation vs ATT Navigator.
Curious about this as well. Came up in a conversation today at work. There was debate between tethering on Android and the iPhone. Any one have insight?

AT&T won't know if u tether through ur phone using android API. But u got to be careful as they can make out based on the amount of traffic u use.
Well, I can speak for the android phones but the never detected me doing it with my blackberry for the last 4 years.
Once they release their "version" I'll be able to report on the captivate as I will use it as much as possible.
Unless u have unlimited data plan, ATT should not care about it at all.

This is why at&t says that max bandwidth is used by less than 1% of their network users. And for a company this big, cutting/forcing data plan on this 1% shouldn't be a big deal, even if they threaten to leave, to ensure quality service to rest of the customers.

How about they upgrade their network to handle ALL the traffic and not keep selling/pushing devices that people use to consume data? IMO there is no abuse or "using too much" bandwidth. I bought an UNLIMITED data plan to use I see fit and use a device that has the capabilities to run apps that use bandwidth, I'm gonna use them when I want and as much as I want, and everyone that has such a device and plan should be able to. If more people would stand together and voice that they wouldn't be getting rid of the "1%". i feel like if im able to make my phone tether without their help and i have unlimited data i can do that... it's for MY USE AND ENJOYMENT.... i realize att and most customers dont feel the same, and any business model wont permit that, so im not trying to start an argument or anything... just how i feel about it all... i have an unlimited plan, that means i can use UNLIMITED DATA regardless of how i use it...
but to answer OP, stick with native android if casual tethering, just watch your back and usage... maybe look into the att plan if your gonna use it everyday

i was wifi tethering... and i checked last months usage, was wrong on the amt, i barely broke 2gb for the month, but it was all that torrent... took like 20+ hours to download it all... maybe they didnt say anything because typically i dont even break 500mb a month... only at 76mb now... who knows... i rarely tether because most places i have internet... but just casual tethering i wouldnt worry about it... not sure how they analyze the usage for each customer but i highly doubt there is an att employee watching every customer so it's gotta either be the monthly usage, huge spikes in data like i did, or both... was just saying i havent heard anything about it, and that bill has been settled... but they do catch ppl...

Right. Once in a while is ok. But there are some habitual consumers. Such accounts would get flagged. Cos they didn't complain when u consumed high a couple doesn't mean people aren't watching.

Customer service and providing a good wireless experience doesn't mean turning away customers that actually use the features that AT&T SOLD to them.

Right. And they could charge the unlimited at a premium price. No one expects people to download movies using phone network.
Oh wow, and now I don't want to start a war.

With all the customers att has I'd think you'd need an insane amount of data usage to get noticed. I have unlimited and I used 4.5 gigs last month with zero tethering. Also they may filter your usage to see if your playing an online game or something, obviously if your communicating with a WoW server or BC2 server for three hours strait you're teathering. But if your just D/Ling stuff a lot they really can't tell because your phone could realistically be doing that where as obviously it can't play BC2 ;-)

I agree. They don't care what u do. But they could be raising alerts to the network team if usage crosses a certain level. Certainly, many customers satisfaction in any given area is considered more than one satisfied customer. Thinking from business angle here. Most of the alerts they may not bother, but if any tower is getting overloaded, then it would create a high priority issue for them, and that is when notice of high usage could be sent to consumers choking the network.

Technically, yes they can tell that you're tethering... but not because the tether itself sends a red flag. It's the type of traffic that your "phone" is generating that can be a dead giveaway. For example, if the user agent on your browser says it's IE8 running on Windows 7 it's pretty suspicious. If you're running p2p, gaming or any other kinds of software or data patterns that aren't really expected from your phone then it could raise a red flag. They aren't sniffing everyone's packets. However, if you are using unusually high data amounts, they could start monitoring your traffic and determine that you are most likely tethering. I guess you could deny it. I'm not sure how far you could argue that or how far they could "prove" their side.
However, they're not in the business of running customers off. They aren't looking to lose or upset a customer. If you aren't abusing the tethering (ie excessive data usage on an unlimited plan) I highly doubt that they would care or desire to upset you. I do suspect that some day they may use this as a tool to get rid of the unlimited data plans. I also suspect that if you aren't on an unlimited plan they probably would never complain, since you are paying per gb. This is all speculation on my part.

The most they would probably even do if they did happen to single out a user for "unreasonable usage" is maybe ask you to stop or take away data unlimited. the fine print in the brochure does not say anything about cash penalties for over use it just says it will not be allowed.
I've searched the threads and goggled till i can't breath anymore, i am running the extreme dynamic Kat rom and i am being throttled by AT&T. I have the grandfathered unlimited plan. Anyone know how to bypass it?
Throttling is from their end...no way to bypass from your end.

Thank You... I have 4 smart phones on promotional share plan 15 GB witch give me 30GB for price of $130+(4x$15)= $190 , also i have rollover data. for last 6 months i we use an average 20-25 GB. I just post this for your information , so you can compare and decide what is wort what.. I'm not telling to to drop plan but if you find out that you are using around 6 GB per month ( witch is more then average user 2GB ) and you have no limitation to speed , maybe is worth to switch.. Like i said i'm NOT salesman just trying to help people.
well I've still been tinckering with it. I downloaded the phone info app from the play store and used it to open the service menu, i then went to device info and set my connection to GSM only. I then hit the menu button and enable data, i then switched back to LTE/GSM auto and then backed out of the program. I ran my speed test and now am back to regular download speed. Before i done all that my download speed was .33mbps.

I certainly can explain why unlimited is better... at least for me... I don't have Internet at my house or work... my neighbors have encrypted wifi... I use an average of 15-20 gigs of data a month by myself while being throttled down to .2mbps and I only pay 90 bucks a month for my phone... now if my phone wouldn't get throttled I would easily double that as I use my phone for everything.... if I need to download something for my computer I download it to my phone and transfer it to my computer if I want to do research I use my phone.... if I'm on standby at work witch happens a lot I'm streaming movies for hours at a time.... literally everything that I do that's on the Internet is done on my phone.... I can't afford to not have unlimited.... normally within a few hours of my phone plan renewing for the month I'm already over my 5 gigs...

I hear what are you saying, but personally still think this is make no sense. If i had to spend over 80 hours (1GB/0.2MB =5000 min) to download just 1GB of data i will switch and pay little more and got my 1GB with in couple min. You are loosing your time ... Average pix on my phone is 2-3 MB , sending pix of this size via MMS will take you what? 15-20 min... Just me .... . Also i think they (at&) should give unlimited as unlimited, but this not gonna happen because all who had unlimited data will sue them for forcing them to drop they plan. They in bad situation anyway...
I just noticed a big impact on my data speeds after switching to dynamic kat xtreme rom a few days ago also..
