Is this possible? Like I want the Birthday to be sync with the rest of the info. Doesn't seem to have a slot in the default contacts app. On Cyanogenmod 4.2.3.1.
In my experience with the G1 (have had it since initial release) there has never been an option to add the birth date.
I've only seen that in the Hero contact app. you can always use a Hero rom for the G1, but even still, that doesn't seem to sync the Birthdates with google. I
've installed plenty of Hero roms over and over trying to look for a halfway decent one, and I've always had to manually enter the birthdates.
Until I get a mass confirmation of a Hero rom working great, I'm going to stick with CM.

A way round it is to add birthdays to your gmail contacts then add 'contacts birthdays and events calendar' to your google calendar, then they will all appear in your calendar on your G1.
I hope they fix this.
I can't accept that Google can't..
It is essential info.

As above, how do I use my HTC Dream to sync with my Outlook? Contacts, Calendar entries, Tasks and Notes?
I use "CompanionLink" works perfect.
Personal outlook on your home computer?
Yup, MS outlook on my home laptop.
The only way that I know of is to use a HERO or Rogers rom and the HTC Sync software. Every other solution that I've heard of is a 2 step sync from your outlook to google and then google to your phone.
You'll probably need to install the PCSCII.apk, since most devs remove it from their roms. get that here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4740940&postcount=13
and then download the HTC sync software from htc.com.
Also, if you use a rogers rom, you'll only get contacts to sync, using a hero rom will get you both contacts and calendar.
So the HTC sync software will only work with HTC Hero, am I right?
I'm using it on my G1 that's flashed with Mlign's 2.5.7 Hero Rom. I have not been able to make it work with non-hero roms. But, really I haven't tried too hard at that. I don't know what it needs from the Hero rom. I assume it's the HTC framework.
google Calendar sync works great for the calendar
Oh okay, anyone tried CompanionLink? Is it good?
Companionlink is a Sync through Google solution.
I see. Can it sync contacts and notes, calendar from Outlook?
I've never tried it, but it appears it would at least do Contacts and Calendar. But, if you're willing to sync through Google, I'm sure there a cheaper or even free solutions for that.

Yes it does, it allows you do do categories, outlook folders, alarms, date range, etc (companionLink)
If i'm willing to go through google, what is some of the free applications I can use? Simple sync entries i would need is contacts, calendar entries and notes.
Sorry, I don't know off the top of my head. When I was searching for this, I saw the google has an outlook plugin that will Sync the calendar. I also saw a different plugin that would sync Contacts. I'd start with googling outlook plugins.
good luck.
Companionlink now has a Sync over USB direct with outlook. I was excited and thought that I had finally found my answer. then I read:
----------------------------
Data we sync
* Contacts sync to the built-in address book on the phone
* Calendar events sync to a custom calendar app
* Tasks sync to a custom tasks app
* Notes sync to a custom notes app
Our custom Calendar app shows events in Day view only. Month view and other scheduling options are coming. Recurring events and exceptions are supported. Adding and editing recurring events must be done on the PC.
Our custom Tasks and Notes apps support categories, sort, and search functionality.
----------------------------
Sigh, it doesn't use the built in calendar database, so it won't work with any calendar widget. So close, but still no cigar. Oh well, maybe they'll wise up and just be a sync provider.
1. CompanionLink (http://www.companionlink.com/androidusb/index.html)
2. Mark/Space (http://www.markspace.com/products/android/missing-sync-android.html)
3. Various Google Cloud <-> Outlook solutions (Paid or free, Google them)
4. HTC Sync from some HTC-specific ROMS (e.g. Hero)
Take note that since Android has no built-in notes and tasks applications, nor a standardized database structure for them, those supporting and plan-to-support notes/tasks are/will be syncing to some custom notes/tasks apps.
The Companion's solution even syncs to a custom Calendar app.

Yeah, that was the disappointing part. I don't think a custom calendar app is a good idea.
Not sure if you're willing to pay anything, but roadsync syncs calendar, contacts and e-mail. Even has a calendar widget. I think it's like $25 now (I got in early and only had to pay $10). works well for me though.
how about syncing notes from outlook? is there one that can do that?
In 1.5, I could do this (or something similar)
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/android/thread?tid=3a1a78cfe42ee8d9&hl=en
But that option is not there in 2.1. I'm assuming it has something to do with Sense.
Any ideas?
It's no longer there. It's a huge pain in the ass to me. Was super useful that it was an option in 1.5, a selling point for me, in fact.
i've posted in every Android and Sprint forum I could find. I even tried flashing the Contacts app from 1.5 to 2.1 but that never works.
The overal consensus on all forums is that they really don't care and nobody used this feature... what!? This feature is KEY in my opinion. I'm basically looked at as a whiner. I get that this reply is whinny but usually I come at it from a reasonable standpoint.
so annoying.
the way i fixed it was create a group for phone contacts and then i erased ALL of the contacts in gmail HAHAHA
/ME SLAPS FOREHEAD
On Darchdroid, I can go Contacts>Menu>Display Options>select my Google acct>Select the groups. But Darchdroid is based on AOSP, so I'm not sure about Sense.
Yeah, it's def. a Sense issue.

This is because you have AOSP Contacts.apk and it can filtor out the contact groups you don't want. But you still have to have to stock contacts app on the phone with ALL your contacts which means they will still show up in the results list of any app that can look through your phonebook, like handcent, fring, other SMS and VOIP apps. Oh, and Google Voice too. Pretty good workaround but not ideal for me. I actually want them to not be synced in AT ALL.
I also would like to have this feature back. Under sense 1.5 you could chose between if you wanted my contacts and all contacts synced from your google account. I have not been able to find this option at all under 2.1.
Because I email other people through the web gui those people/email addresses now show up on the phone which I don't want (just like all my facebook people showing in the phone dialer) the only way I have found to reduce this is to go into google contacts on the pc and select all contacts>put a space in the search box(which now shows two groups other contacts and My contacts) and than delete any of the "other contacts" you don't want and add any you want into my contacts
Would a work around be make a [email protected], export the contacts you want to include, make android not link the contacts in your main email then link the contacts in your [email protected] account?
I had a simular problem with the Palm Pre where it would export my contacts from facebook (and really... I dont need half those peoples numbers) and then sync them with my Google contacts. So I had to create a Facebook contact and link every single person to that contact name so they would be removed from my list. It was really annoying. Took me about 15 minutes to fix but was good after that.
This is a f'ing JOKE!!!
What were they thinking. Hello HTC gmail is an email account not a phone book it seems pretty logical that people would have a number of contacts in gmail that they don't have phone numbers for.
I loved choosing which groups to sync. I specifically created a set of groups for the purpose of syncing with my phone. I certainly do not have a need to have all 500 of my gmail contacts on my phone.
So seriously no work around for this other then moving to a different rom?
email htc and ask for group syncing to be returned
After posting my feelings on here I went ahead and sent HTC a support request email. I encourage everyone to email HTC (and sprint for that matter, get sprint to apply some pressure on HTC to have this feature returned).
Here is the txt of the email I sent to HTC:
Hello
I have an HTC Hero from Sprint here in the USA. I updated to android 2.1 using the rom that you and sprint released. I am EXTREMLY UPSET!!!!!! This update had made managing contacts impossible. What were you thinking!!!! Gmail is an email service first and foremost so it would be clearly logical that gmail users would have contacts that they do not have phone numbers for and thus don't need to be in their phone. I have 500 contacts (yes 500 email contacts) and I DO NOT want 500 contacts in my phone. In 1.5 I could chose which gmail contact groups I wanted to sync with the phone but it seems like that ability has been removed in 2.1, WHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY???????????????
Please bring this feature back IMMEDIATELY. It should have never been removed. The remove of this feature has crippled me in the use of my phone.
Contacts in Phone App not necessarily People App....
I have 4200 contacts. I REALLY REALLY REALLY want this solved.
While testing the Andriod App and Google Contacts I realized a couple of things.
In Google Contacts selecting ALL Contacts I could REMOVE them from MY CONTACTS under GROUPS.
If you look to the left hand side column you will see MY CONTACTS now has ZERO contacts in it and ALL CONTACTS has all your contacts.
Then I selected ALL CONTACTS in the left hand side column. The I selected only the contacts I wanted to be in MY CONTACTS. When you click on a CONTACT you now have an option next to GROUPS at the top that say MOVE TO MY CONTACTS.
The great thing about this is under the PEOPLE APP only MY CONTACTS and the GROUPS I have created show up in the PEOPLE APP.
This is what I hoped would happen.
What happened in addition to this you ask?
Now when I go into the PHONE APP I click on MENU then PEOPLE and voila! Only the selected contacts come up. Perfect so far right?
Wrong. From the HOME screen I press the TALK BUTTON. When I start scrolling through the HISTORY of the calls and I arrive at the last HISTORY call I see that the 1st CONTACT of my 4200 contacts shows up. Then I scroll on down and realize that all 4200 contacts ARE THERE!!!!
So it is not only the PEOPLE APP that needs work but ALSO the PHONE APP. In my opinion.
Am I missing something?
So my question is now how do I tell the phone app to only sync whats in PEOPLE APP and not request ALL CONTACTS?
Any thoughts? Ive only worked and researched this for about 5 hours. So I am probably missing something.
Thank you for your help.

When my HTC Hero(GSM) was ky primary phone, I remember that I could have birthdays show up in the calendar, so I do not have to go to the Facebook application to see them. It was default on the hero but I can't figure out how to get it to work.
Also, I found myself envious of the new Blackberry Torch because through blackberry messenger, it adds your Facebook events to your calendar automatically. Does anyone know of a way to add this as well?
Sent from my HTC Liberty using XDA App
Two ways to do this that i have found.
One is to go to facebook on a the computer. Export the calendar, and then Import it into your google account. bleh
What i found today i think will do what you need.
Ebobirthday
can be found in the market. This will log into your face book account to sync with Birthdays. Then you can have it sync with the calendar inside the phone.
Hope that helps you somewhat.
This is sort of what I'm looking for, I still feel like there is a way to do this without having to resync that calendar information. Already in the phone if you pull up a contact, it does give the contact's birthday information, but for some reason it does not include that information in the calendar like it did on the Hero.
That app is a good temporary solution until I figure out how to get it to work just the way I want it. Thank you!
Edit: Playing around with it, I found a section in the menu that lets you add Calendars. In order for my Hero to have been able to sync birthdays to the calendar, there had to have been a Facebook calendar in that list, and there isn't one now. So I think to solve my problem it is just a matter of figuring out how to add Facebook to the HTC Calendar.
Hi there,
I read through a couple of threads and found that some people have the same issues with the stock calendar app as me. I mean the one that comes from Samsung and can be found in stock rom and in overcome. I bought the tab for my business.
Unfortunately, the samsung calendar app is pure garbage to say it friendly. Not all calendars show up, they all have the same color and if you add an appointment in your tab, edit it in google calendar on your PC you mysteriously end up with 2 appointments on your tab.
Yesterday, I switched to CM7 to check out how the calendar works in that mod. If CM7 by technomancer wouldn't be still in beta I'd stay on it for obvious reasons. The calendar works perfect and like a charm. All gmail calendars show up, even the ones from my wife. They all have the colors I selected in gmail calendars on my pc. The syncing works perfect.
I was wondering if someone could port that app into the Overcome Rom, because I have no clue how to do that?
Google should do quality assurance to make sure their functions work right.
Any help would be greatly appreciated because I use pure calendar widget and it gets the entries from the calendar app. Calengoo, is okay but the widgets suck.
I am willing to donate some money for a working port
Well I tried a little bit around and got some things working. I took a calendar and googlecalendarsyncadapter.apk from a 2.3.3 aosp rom and copied it into system/app fixed permissions and did a reboot.
Guess what the calendar is working. You'll get all different colors and the sync works totally right. Unfortunately there's only one problem. The calendar will crash when you select what calendars to sync...you have enough time to select them but then it crashes. I think this has something to do with the emailprovider.apk from samsung. I changed it to an aosp version but then the calendar crashes all the time.
There have to be done some changes on the emailprovider.apk to get it all going but I have no clue what it could be. It seems there is a limitation on how many calendars can be synced.
Running fresh install 2.2 on captivate - I've spent the last several hours trying to find a way to sync the captivate with outlook... and nothing is coming up as a reliable & cheap way. I would have never thought that a modern(ish) phone would have issues syncing with outlook. Never had a problem from the old 8125 up to iphone 3gs... but thought I would check with y'all to see if anything less than $50 has come up that would do the trick. I've tried Kies/MyPhoneExplorer(didn't see outlook calendar data except holidays and recurring events). I don't want to mess with google calendars and I live by the calendars for scheduling business! Any recent developments I should look in to?
Android and Outlook have generally never been close friends. There are a few paid apps you can find that do a very good job of keeping your information in sync.
If your business uses exchange you can set up your exchange account in the e-mail app on your phone and it will allow you to sync you mail, calendar and contacts.

Unfortunately my work is my business of me, myself, and I - so I haven't popped for an exchange server, but the frustration is almost close enough to just look into getting one done - and I've had a hard time finding an ap that syncs outlook and respective contact fields properly with the phone. I understand it's a google vs. MS deal and so they don't want to make it an easy one.... but it's a stupid idea since it will just push people to use iPhone, IMO. For now, I've relented to having to clumsily use google sync and the google calendar program to sync between to two. I just hate having middlemen to have to do it.
I use Kies 1.5.3.10093_80. I hear the newer versions are blocked from working with the captivate, but the older version works find for syncing w/outlook on my home system.

I use the same apps, to keep contacts and calendar sync. For the E-Mail I just configure in Outlook the Gmail account as IMAP. The only drawback is with the custome field in google that Outlook can't handle.
