Maybe a stupid question, maybe not. I have a rooted G1 with Cyanogen 4.2.3.1 and a configured sd card with the ext2 and ext3 partitions. I am getting a new G1. Would I be able to root the new G1 and just use my current SD card, or do I have to start over from scratch by formatting my sd card for use with the new phone?
you should be able to use the same sd card as long as its not hero.
do you have a spare sd card to use for the RC29 image?

I do! This is good news. I am planning to use a spare SD to root and then hoping the rom will read my current card as if it was always there.

I want to root my phone but I don't have a card reader. I have the 2GB memory card that came with the phone. I have ordered a 8GB memory card (and reader). Is it ok if i root my phone now or should I wait til i get my new memory card? (I want to show off to all my friends with a hero build )
Thanks,
Jacob

Wait... And the stock sdcard is 1 gb
I got a 2gb card with my phone.
Thanks anyway for your help.
Oh =/ Sorry for my ignorance
Well my memory card should be here Tuesday or Wednesday. In the mean time I'll prepare everything I need to root my phone.

I used a 2gb sd card before I got my 8 and it seemed to work fine. The ext2 or ex3 only needs to be around 500-600mb. I had no problems. I believe that JAC has a rom that is made just for slow sd cards.

I rooted my phone just fine without a card reader and i used the stock 1gig card that i received. If you dont wanna wait you can root your phone awhile and when you get your new card just reformat and apply ext2 or ext3 whichever your prefference. Root has to do with the phone not the sdcard applying different roms has to do with the sd card but even the biggest rom is around 90mg which a 2gig card can easily handle need any help with root or applying roms pm me
hope this helps
you can root the phone with he stock sd card. I rooted my phone before apps to sd was even possible. just follow the process exactly and you'll be fine.
ok guys. i am running a rooted g1 with the 2.6.3 hero build. i am running it on the 1 gb sd card that the phone came with. the speed of the build sucks and lags because of the card. i am going to purchase a 4 gb or 8 gb class 6 card today to improve speed and will also get on a newer hero rom. my question is, when i put all the data that is on my old card to my new card will i still be on root, and will i still be on hero? will it be plug and play basically? will i have to reformat to fat32 or will it already be on there? one last thing..how do you partition the sd card? i will need to do this so i can jump to a newer build of the rom..
anything helps.
thanks,
Nick
The rom and root .... is based on the phone it's self, not the SD card.
You are best to install an Ubuntu live cd .... and use G-Parted to partition your SD card.
Serious Answer!
I'm assuming you are already running apps2sd right now. So when you get your new card you will NOT be able to just swap them out. Best thing to do is format your new card (just like other poster said in ubuntu, look in my sig for tut) in 3 partitions fat32, ext3, and linux-swap. Then load up your hero rom on your sd card and flash away. And yea you will still be rooted.
Hello everyone,
I am new to the hero and just rooted my phone using kitchen. I wanted to get an 8GB card and wanted to know what the process was. I didn't want to mess anything up so how do I change micro sd cards. I did a search but was unable to find the answer.
Are you using apps 2 sd?
If yes there is a guide
If no, then copy your data to your pc.. unmount the card(or turn the phone off) .. insert new card, format... then copy stuff back.
cool, never used apps 2 sd. Thanks! Will wait to get a new rom after.
Just remember its a mounted filesystem, if you just took it out that would be like unhooking your computer's hard drive. Probably going corrupt some data.
So just make sure the phone is off before switching cards?
i just made that mistake last night, burnt up an 8gb card, make sure phone is off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You don't need to turn the phone off. Right in SD Card and Storage Settings, there's a button to unmount the SD card. Hit that button, eject the card, then put the new one in and copy all the data back on via USB.

You shouldn't have been able to burn a card doing that. Maybe confuse the filesystem on it. If worse comes to worst, reformat the sdcard.
What items on the SD card are necessary? I did the root and there are two recovery images on there. I haven't done anything else besides rooting the phone.
Sorry dumb question, rooting doesn't change when changing cards right?
Since there is an SDcard discussion. Every time I play music the songs glitch at the beginning of the track and sometimes mid song..but always at the start UNLESS the phone is awake, then it plays fine.
Could it be the class of the card or that the phone wakes up after the end of every track and glitches? I still have the stock 2 gig card and was looking to get a higher class / more capacity to swap if that is the case. if not I'll just stick to my ipod shuffle.. bleh.

Nothing on the SD card is strictly necessary. Rooting and applying ROMs does not affect the SD card.

Necessary? Nothing. The phone should run without the sdcard even installed. Some applications aren't going to like it not being there, like the camera.
New card partition question

No and no.
You only need to partition the card if you want it partitioned and partitioning it has zero to do with rooting or with applying a new ROM.

Yes, you'll need a ext partition for a2sd.

Thinking about rooting and installing cyanogen's latest rom but before I do I want to know what happens if I purchase a larger micro sd card in the future?
Is it as simple as copying everything from my sd card onto my pc and then transferring it onto my new card or will I have to reflash things and stuff?
Thanks in advance
yes, just backup to pc then new sd
if you're installing 5.0.5 cyanogenmod you may want to backup the sdcard first if you want app2sd
then in amonra partition the sd card with
swap partiton=0
EXT=512mb (or whatever size you want for apps)
fat32=remainder
then do the upgrade ext>ext2 ext2>ext3 ext3>ext4
then just put your backup from pc into the sdcard
only thing is amonra doesnt support the nandroid+ext for app2sd currently, but i believe is in the works. so would need to backup the ext and fat32 before swapping to new sdcard, depending how soon you're upgrading to new sdcard that is.
Cheers for that. Sounds simple enough.
Hey, sorry if this has been asked before (I'm sure it has, but I couldn't find anything through the search). I just bought an 8gb class 4 sd card that I'm looking to upgrade to from the stock N1 card. What exactly do I need to do to have everything run smoothly? Do I just need to copy everything from my N1 to my PC then pop in the new card and copy back or is there something special I need to do? I'm running CM 5.0.5.2 (upgrading to 5.3 after card swap) and Amon Ra 1.7.0.
Thanks for any help.
Basically you answered you own question. Only thing is are you planning to do app2sd?
Hi,
Thanks for confirming. I just wanted to make sure that I wouldn't run into any problems just copy/pasting. I was considering apps2sd but I dont use the phone for games or anything big like that so I wasn't sure if I really needed it.
Also, I'm pretty sure I need to format the new card before I copy everything back, right? Will the phone prompt/perform the format or do I need to do that from a pc?
Format the card to fat32. I use the pc to format. If you do want app2sd, the card is easily partition using Amon_Ra recovery. I would suggest to do partition now if you know this is something you want to so. Little less work now that when you have a lot on the card. This is just my view point on the matter. I love app2sd. I have 75 apps and only use 10 mb of internal memory with cm rom it is fast.
thanks for the clarification. How much space is recommended for the apps2sd partition and can it be expanded later on?

I dont have a computer with an sd card reader, is there another way?

nvm, I can do it with the phone apparently

512mb is all you'll really need. You can use recovery and do USB mass toggle to access it. But one thing I think u might need class 6 card for ap2sd
Ok, so I've partitioned the sd card (ext-2 size 512, fat32 remainder). Do I need to do the upgrades to ext-4 or do I leave it as is?
A2SD will work with either ext2/3/4...
I'm running cyanogenmod 5.0.5.3 with apps2sd and amon_ra recovery 1.70 on a 4gb sd card planning on getting a 32gb card how do I swap this out and keep my existing ext.?
