Not sure if this was requested before or done, but I figured it would be really useful if there is an app on the Fuze which detects where your location is through the phone's GPS and can automatically turn the phone to vibrate, or silent, or even off in certain areas on a map, and even at certain times.
This could be useful for someone who does not want to have his or her phone ring inside a church/temple/synagogue/place of worship, classroom, library, at home, or anywhere that can be located on a map. Even during certain time periods of certain days.
The user could map out a radius (circle or perimeter) around the coordinates of the spot of which the phone is required to switch to silent or vibrate upon entering the radius. Obviously this could only work outdoors, and certain places indoors, but a lot of us do travel outdoors and have areas where we do not want our phones to interrupt our personal business.
I know google maps can detect your exact location, or at least detect your location inside a radius, but can it be used for an application to command your phone to change its settings? Just thought I could start a discussion on this and see what the XDA community thinks of the idea and if it's plausible or just not worth the effort. Thanks.
Check out G-Profile... There is also another app in Dev and Hacking with this function.
I like the problem solving creativity...
but no, it is not worth it. Not sure how much you've experimented with gps but in addition to draining your battery rapidly the phone needs to be able to listen to the satellites very clearly, something that is not easy when it's not on your dashboard or you're holding it out from you and upright in a wide open area. So for your purposes it's not a practical option.
As far as Google Map's tower calculation poor man's gps goes, that is easier on the battery and you don't need a perfect signal however if you're not in a dense area with a lot of towers you'll be getting at the very best 600 meter accuracy. Not good enough if you don't want false positives or negatives for your application.
What it is adequate enough for however is, say, if you're driving home from work, your phone detects a cell tower twenty miles from your home and sends your computer a signal to fire up the lights, air conditioner and pool heater (search for trackme by strayton).
As for toggling rings for when you step inside a library, church or classroom, you'll have to stick, in my recommendation, to using the long end key vibration press yourself. Or just leave it on vibrate if you're in these places so frequently that you come up with this idea.
Still, I like the way you think; that's why we keep getting sweet apps so keep on thinking brotha.

Yes, GPS polling is quite expensive for a relatively simple task.
G-Profile works well because much of it is event-driven (eg: profile is activated only at a certain time, or only when you plug in a headset, etc) and therefore there is close to no battery overhead. Keep in mind, it also works with more than just schedule-based profiles (time, day). You can configure profiles based on which accessories are connected. I think you might also be able to configure profiles based on which wifi network you're connected to (eg: Home network vs School/Work network).
Using GPS location is conceptually a more elegant solution, but either way you will still have to manually define different profiles, so using a program like G-Profile is no more complicated than a GPS-based profile switcher, and actually much more flexible/precise.
Has anyone else checked out Waze.com free open-source navigation and mapping software? Looks really cool.
Jamie
I started playing around with this software yesterday, I must say that its pretty brilliant. Hopefully it catches on with enough people and it gets popular.
i love this new app i was amaze to hear turn by turn and speed reading very good app just wish the police option was near me and not 900 miles away
Oh! There's more to this than just playing Pac Man with my car?
looks pretty cool, I'm gonna try it out!
It is THE killer app for all paid navigation software.
IF! the provider can stay alive long enough it will catch up globally.
Then within 5 years it will be the ONLY navigation app left.
The disadvantage is how to reach as much people possible and convince them to install. Then get in the car every day and turn it on and start driving.
I DL'd it and played with it this weekend. It does have huge upside, however, it will not be a threat to navigation software. They even say that Waze is about commuting and traveling around areas you normally travel. The software helps you inteligently see what might be affecting your commute and to route you to your location using real time traffic data.
A real world example, regular navigation software iGo, Garmin, etc, will help you find a grocery store. Where Waze will get you into the fastest checkout line, based on the speed of the customers checking out, while you were still shopping for milk. I know how to get to my work, I also know that there are several alternate routes, waze is supposed to be able to tell you which one would be faster on any given day based on real time info from other drivers.
I live in the Cleveland, OH area. We get Lake Effect snow storms. These snow storms can be very small, but very intesnse. It is not uncommon for a stretch of highway a mile long to be in near blizzard conditions, and it is sunny and clear all around. You have no idea that you are going to run into this storm until you are in it. Waze could detect the sudden drop in speed, and advise others that there is an issue, thus allowing us to pick a different route.
If you hadn't noticed I am excited by the potential. They have some bugs, the software is o.k., but it needs more developing. I was driving over the weekend and was notified of an accident 300+ miles away. However those issues are being worked on.
It has real promise

We are both excited at the potential of this concept, but I think it could easily replace TomTom or Igo, IF Waze becomes widely and consistently used. It sounds like you think Waze is less useful when navigating to somewhere you haven't been before, but as long as other people on that route are also contributing data, Waze will still be more useful than even paid traffic subscriptions, because it is real time data from the road, not from observers. We all will need to use it all the time for it to live up to its promise.
I agree that more people need to use it. I was excited on a trip over the weekend to pass by someone going the other way... their icon showed up on my phone. Lots of cars around, no way to tell which one it was exactly, but kinda cool none the less.
The reason I think it is more of a commuter app than a navigation app it 2 things, 1) that is what it says on their FAQ page, and 2) I drove from Mentor, OH to Canton, OH a trip of about 90 miles. I knew close enough to where I was going, that I did not need navigation software, so I turned on waze and let it data collect... (It is important to let it collect data whenever possible, especially until the user base gets bigger)... the onscreen map showed only the map for the last "tile" i was in, and only showed a blank white screen for the space in front of me. On the way home it showed all of the map for the areas I was in on the way down. Now, I did NOT have it giving me directions, so that may have been the issue.
It was wet and slick, and we did see and accident on the other side of the road, a car slid off a curve on an exit ramp. I was impressed that it only took 3 or 4 presses of the screen to report it!
Cool
Hi there fellow Buckeye! I'm originally from Hubbard, a speck on the map north of Y-town.
I still believe that if we can get a large and diverse enough of a user base, we won't need to pay TomTom or Igo for maps or traffic data anymore.
BTW, have you had any trouble getting your GPS signal lately? I haven't been able to get a signal at all since yesterday. Prior to that it was nearly instant. I'd normally blame my device, but I know 2 others here in ATL who were having the same issue.
Can't say that I use the GPS that often to notice. As for Waze, I agree, there are a couple of people who drive around in my area that use it, it pops up. The software needs some significant development yet... but I am an eager early adopter. The key would be to get the truckers to use it... they are everywhere.
It's working again
Not sure what happened. It was wierd becuase one of the things I love about this program is how fast I get a lock. It is almost instant. With Igo sometimes it takes minutes to get a fix.
Thats a great idea about the truckers, btw

I dont have a single one of these issues. I guess it depends just how much of a complainer you want to be. It's like complaining about a laptop you have without keeping things in perspective such as 10 years ago DESKTOP's were the rage. The person should calm down with the complaining and enjoy the phone...

My thoughts exactly! Especially number 17... that's a real disappointment.
Honestly, the only ones I can kinda agree with are the proximity/light sensor issues. It seems to be a bit slow when I pull it away from my ear when in direct sunlight. But, I know where the end button is so it's no big deal.

LoL this made my day
23. Name doesn't begin with the letter "i".
1) 3G connectivity issue
It was patched with Update1
2) Touch Screen unresponsiveness/sensing incorrect input
It happens occasionally, but can be fixed by turning the screen off then back on
3) unresponsive trackball
Haven't had this at all
4) WIFI connectivity issue
Some times it doesn't reconnect to wifi automatically
5) Lock button response issue
Haven't had this.
6) Proximity sensor sensitivity issue
Haven't had issues with this
7) Ambient light sensor issue
Haven't had any issues
8)bluetooth issues: fails to operate; inadequate volume; intermittent failure to accept commands
Haven't had this at all. Working beautifully for me.
9) speaker: horrible sound quality
Ha. Compared to 5.1 speakers maybe
10) ringer: insufficient volume
Thats what the volume up button is for
11) earpiece: insufficient volume
See answer to number 10
12) headset connector: headphones cord activates pause or other functions
I've only seen this happen with Pandora, but recently stopped doing this.
13) manufacturer says phone cannot go in pocket
Every manufacturer says you shouldnt put your phone in your pocket. This doesn't stop people from doing it. I keep mine in my pocket, (Always comes out nice and shiny. Go go Pocket Cleaner)
14) Phone mutes when calling people and can only be unmuted by turning mute on then off!
WTF... Haven't heard of this.
15) missed call notification trackball does not flash
Works great for me.

Wow Ill be the first one to say the nexus software has enough issues to push me to Apple but even I think that list is finicky. I think users need to at least wait for a couple of updates before giving up on the device. I guess it can't hurt to point out the issues but several of those listed really aren't even worth mentioning.
Edit: I just read the article, pretty harsh! While I've only had a couple of the issues listed I've had many other issues that aren't listed. My main frustration though, and I don't care how the iPhone compares here, is that almost all of the issues I have can be fixed ota but I've heard nothing from Google. The main problems on my end are that the touchscreen is jittery and the images lose quality when I touch the screen and the RAM isn't utilized properly. I have various other minor annoyances -(vkb, boring widgets, etc) and bugs -(random reboot, browser issues, lower effective resolution than advertised, etc) but they are almost all software related, which is a great thing. And if Google would just indicate a willingness or plan to fix my issues I could really relax. I really love all of the integration and Google apps so I'm going to wait and see what happens but at the very least Android needs to share some sort of plan of action. If they did this a lot if not all of the software complaints would cease.
P.S.- considering the iPhone's unimpressive though overdue software upgrades, unless the new iPhone has better resolution, dual mics, hd recording, and front facing camera, I'm not impressed.

I agree...
Well don't be so quick to dismiss the frustrated users. Some of the things on that list is petty although somewhat accurate i guess, speaker could be louder. I've also had an issue with cradling the phone against my shoulder as that seems to affect the quality of my voice and people complain i sound like i'm "in a tunnel" or far away. I'm guessing something with the noise canceling mic.
I've had the data connection issues which seems to just be a cell radio issue, probably hardware based with my replacement phone at least. I had my old phone replaced because it just did not want to connect via data or whatever for 5-20 seconds all the way up to 2 or 3 minutes. The up arrow on the 3g without any data coming back down issue. Whenever I did a speed test.. upload sometimes would be horrible and it would be really choppy (doing the speedtest.net one) compared to the download. By choppy i mean the meter would jump to different values (it wasn't smooth and consistent like the download) and sometimes it would just stop as would the data indicator lights. It was always around 100-500 kbps averaging around 300. Same behavior for both the original and the RMA.
With the replacement one that i've had for a couple of weeks that issue turned into a much larger one. It started when I wasn't able to make outbound calls so i turned off my phone and turned it back on again to get the x with four blank bars at the top. Re-registered on the network... seemed to work ok for awhile. Then the same thing but started getting a "sim card isn't valid for this network" error when trying to re-register my phone after again starting to randomly show me an x with 4 blank bars at the top. Hard resetting and soft resetting didn't fix it. Sometimes it'd give me an error even searching for them. When i first got the problem it was brief.. but i figured i should get my sim card replaced. So i did. 3-4 days later I wasn't able to get it to work for almost 3 hours.. on my way to the tmobile store it just went from x with 4 bars to 4 full bars and then finally the 3g indicator to the left of that came on. Turned around cause I really didn't have the time to figure out what it was about at that moment. Data worked, could make a phone call. Next day it just got worse to the point now where it wont' search for a network sometimes.. gives me an error after sometime.. and definitely won't register on the network. I also had airplane mode turned on automatically after a soft reset (despite it showing an x and 4 bars and not an airplane)wasn't able to turn it off via the android menu settings. Had to go into the service menu and press turn radio on button.
WIFI still works however.. but that's a separate chip from the cell radio chip and its has just wifi/bluetooth on it so that makes sense.
I've had tmobile double and tripple check everything, network cancellation, sim replacement, check the towers nearby, make sure my plan is setup correctly for my phone. I'm going with poor build quality on some of these and bad quality checking... I guess time will tell. Getting my swap on monday... car dock arrived today and is just sitting on my desk.
3G connection
I have had my Nexus One for a week now...... My area has only had T-Mobile 3G coverage for about a month... At the T-Mobile store all their phones have full 3G service and my Nexus was on Edge only... The HD2 Demo in the store had full bars of 3G and my phone was just pushing out Edge... It flipped to 1 and 2 bars of 3G a couple of times but reverted back to Edge... At home I can set it on my desk or coffee table and set up the screen to stay on for 30 minutes and with out moving the phone watch it flip between 3 bars of 3G to 4 bars of Edge and it does this constantly... Even if I go outside and in my yard set it down and just watch it switch back and forth between Edge and 3G.... The girl next door has the My Touch 3G and she has full 3G service on her phone it never flips between Edge and 3G but the Nexus One does... The day I got it and hooked it up the phone rebooted and loaded the latest firmware and it did this twice.. if I look for manual updates for the phone it says it has the latest software. have not had any of the other issues being posted on here. I have followed some suggestions to go to the settings, networks, mobile networks, network operators and then select automatically (Which was a fix I read about from another post) still no help.. Still flips back and forth between edge and 3G.... How can another phone (The HD2 which I purchased and returned after a week... Windows Mobile is horrible even with sense layered over it) have no problem keeping a 3G signal but the Nexus one continues to drop the signal? Not sure if maybe I got a bad unit and it needs to be exchanged???? Any suggestions on the 3G problem? other than that the phone has been amazing.. I love the stock android 2.1 OS.... the Camera is pretty awesome for a phone...
@Robbie317 Post on the nexus one forums and call them up as well and tell them exactly what you posted here. Personally I'd recommend against an RMA until another update comes back cause who knows what issues the next one can give you if you do a swap... and unless you can wait 1-2 weeks for the same phone to come back to you from a repair I'd wait it out for and update and just ***** on the nexus one tech support forums and calling them. Say what you said here. Hell call them in the store at t-mobile. Take a picture of your bars on your phone next to an HD2. I think its important to get the point across to them as clearly as possible. I'm sure they're aware of most of these issues though.
Also it seems my phone is working again now.. weird and annoying stuff. I filed an FTC complain. Might seem excessive but I looked over those support forums alot today. This is not an isolated issue that is just affecting a small minority of phones that slipped passed quality control. It's also not an issue with t-mobile because they are people who are complaining about the same issues I've had (that got worse over the last 2 weeks) and have AT&T. RYGUY asked for more info in one post to look into the issues being reported so I'm glad they're doing *something* but its definitely not enough. I'm just hoping its not a hardware or design defect in the phone.

This is the main reason I'm returning mine.
i've been switching roms trying to get my GPS to lock back on.
i used to get it down to exactly which room I was in in my House.
i think it said accurate to 2 meters.
I could use google nav like a champ and it would lock on quickly.
now i can't get it any closer than 20 m. It seems to refresh my location slower and I have problems using google nav b/c it continuously loses my GPS signal.
Any suggestions? thoughts? people with the same problem?
Where do you live, remember weather is a significant factor when it comes to GPS. It is getting about that time of year where it is going to be cloudy and rainy a lot. We had a big rain storm come through a couple weeks back and I couldn't even get a lock in my car.
ah i was replying to this thread when XDA froze.
But i'm in southern cali and everywhere it wasn't working.
on the 101 freeway, 110, 405, highway 1
anywhere
it used to be so spot on.
Was it overcast or raining when you were having problems? I have checked the public GPS interference notices and there is nothing specified in your area and there are only 2 unavailable sats right now, although there is the slight possibility that there is something on the classified notifications that may explain any service disruption, but I doubt it. Most likely it is due to atmospheric effects, although there is also the chance that something is indeed broken, whether physically or in software. There is an app on the market called GPS status that has an interface similar to old-school garmin devices where you can see where all the sats are and your signal strength for each of them. Also, once you get it installed play around with it in different weather conditions and times of day(the signal should be stronger at night if it is clear). If you want I can do some baselines and send them to you to compare, although I am in CO, so it may be better for you to compare to someone else in CA.
I just received my new hero and it definitely was an internal problem. I can get a lock in seconds now and.within two meters.

I have been hearing of numerous complaints about the GPS of the Galaxy S and was wondering if mine had an issue.
Having only GPS'd my location at a standstill with excellent (within 10 metre) results, I decided to use Google Navigation on a 15 kilometre trip from where I was to my home.
I can honestly say my GPS had pinpoint accuracy for the entire trip, not losing signal once. And when I mean pinpoint accuracy, I mean it felt like a satellite was right on top of me the entire way home.
Apart from Google Navigation using a weird route to get home (which I followed, only forcing the unit to reroute once), and speaking the street names like it didn't understand grammer, I'd say it was almost as perfect as my tried and true Garmin (which uses better routes).
So this isn't a gloating post, but I'm trying to understand what issues all of you have with the GPS, as I don't seem to be experiencing any.
P.S. I'm still on Bell's official 2.1 firmware (latest one, I believe its JH2).
Thanks

Ok, I never really use my GPS that way, but for experimental purposes I will. Downloading the program now (not factory software with Bell I guess). Is there a certain distance I should be walking? And what should I notice to report back? That my tracks were the exact route I took?
Having said that, if there is a problem, could it not be a specific problem with the way MyTracks itself cooperates with the GPS? I mean I find it strange the GPS works flawlessly with Navigation (stops and lights, stop signs etc) but not with My Tracks? I dunno.

I dunno.

Not just My Tracks, you can try any other similar apps. That's just the most popular and widely used one.
The thing with Navigation is, it KNOWS you're supposed to be travelling on the road - so even if the actual GPS data suggests that you're 5 meters off the road, the navigation software "corrects" it and puts you back on the road.
Use My Tracks to record a small walk. Make a couple of stops. It ALWAYS puts me 15 feet off the road. And when standing still, it keeps moving around restlessly. Ugh
It's just that navigation software generally has the ability to use road information to supplement the raw GPS data and thus yields seemingly better results. It snaps to roads, approximates expected position etc.
My Tracks and other similar software just records your track without any awareness of roads so the resulting info (track) is pretty close to the raw GPS performance.
Standing still is when the GPS problem is most evident. Your reported position just jumps around, sometimes sending you a hundred meters away or more.

Ok,
Went for a short walk using my tracks... Around a rather large block and through a path in a park, where I sat down on a park bench for 5 minutes, got up, and continued the trail back to the main road, then back to my house.
I noticed when I started off, it showed me on the other side of the street, but quickly corrected itself as soon as I started walking to the right side of the street.
I then stopped at a communal mail box, I noticed the gps had 'bounced' to the other side of the street but as soon as I started walking again, it corrected itself.
The other side of the street on those two occasions was 15-20 feet away (Its a residential side-street), which to me has the GPS as being extremely accurate. Even Google's disclaimer on "My Tracks" states:
Under optimal conditions the location can be +/- 20 feet (6 meters).
And thats exactly what it was with mine.
After the communal mail box, it was extremely accurate to less than 2 metres the rest of the trip/way home. The circle around the orange arrow was extremely small most of the way, only getting larger when I entered my house.

See, standing still with me is absolutely bang on within 10 metres. If you're talking about when you first fire up the GPS, then I'd agree with you, but the hundreds of metres away is not your GPS position. Its where your cell provider is reporting you to be, either by the tower, or triangulation.
The GPS then using that information, as per my guess, to hone on where you are. and it actually finds me within 5 to 10 seconds.
Oh and as for navigation, I'd have to disagree with your assertion about the GPS and the knowing your on a road statement. I live in an area where new roads are built all the time, and those roads are not on any mapping system including garmins, and the GPS will follow you anyway, just go into a constant cycle of
"Recalculating" or "Turn Around" or "Make a U-Turn". (At least that's what my garmin does when I test it), but it still follows me up to and including the road that is actually on the GPS, and I'm sure this GPS will do the same.
Either way, I'm happy that I don't have any issues with the GPS of this Galaxy S. Seems to work quite well.
same here, once i intentionally drove into this field of newly paved road, with no houses foundation even build on them, it was so funny to see myself on google map going into what seems like an empty space
but with the tracking enable, it was able to draw good lines of where i drove over for the missing streets on the map
