I know you can use the G1 with AT&T service, but I see conflicting information on the interwebs claiming what is/isn't working when used with AT&T.
1. Is the market working?
2. Is the new "Maps" GPS working?
3. Any drawbacks you can think of, except for no 3G access?
Thank you!

Market works fine.
Not familiar with the new "Maps" GPS...so I can't verify
No drawbacks aside from 3g. I don't have AT&T 3g in my areas anyhow, so makes no difference to me.
If you get te rogers dream instead of the tmobile g1 you will get 3g service. Assuming you are going to root the phone and install a custom rom you will have no issues with the market. Also assuming you are staying in the US and you root the dream you can get the new google navigation.
I'm not sure how smooth it would be on the dream but I'm sure it works fine.
The phone shouldn't care which network you're on. I have a G1 running on AT&T and it works fine. The only special thing I had to do (besides SIM and CID unlock the phone) was program the APN settings manually during the initial Google Account setup:
Name: AT&T
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: (not set)
Port: (not set)
Username: [email protected]

MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS proxy: wireless.cingular.com

works for me! ^_^ However, YMMV..

LOL a map or a lawsuit???
Everything works very very well
one draw back is the 3G, there isn't any.
I have my G1 with AT&T and to be honest if I had a data plan, I probably wouldn't even be able to tell the difference between T-Mobile and AT&T
GG
Yeah, it's not bad at all. EDGE connection is iffy at times, but with T-Mobile I only get GPRS at my house. Everything works just as you'd expect it to.
I had a T-Mobile G1 with T-mobile services until moved to a different location, where AT&T has a great coverage and T-Mobile has almost none. Unlocked G1, signed with AT&T. G1 works fine - the only application which has refused to work is an MSN messenger.
Edge coverage only, of course.
After that, I bought unlocked Rogers Dream on fleabay in order to get US AT&T 3G service on Android based phone.
It was preactivated with Google servers, but interface was in french and I decided to restore it to default for the sake of simplicity. It was a shock to discover, that the phone did not want to connect to Google Servers for activation (AT&T APN has been created and sim card with a data plan was inserted). Fortunately (contrary to T-Mobile G1) Rogers Dream has an option to "activate later", basically gives you full access to your phone without activating it first. That what I did - went to "activate later", turned on wi-fi and activated it.
Turned off wi-fi - voila - everything works - AT&T 3G, all market applications (not sure about paid ones - don't use them), tethering using Tetherbot, etc. A bit different dialer interface, but I like it. So far, I don't need to root it and/or install a custom ROM.

If I am correct, tmobile US will release their version of the Kaiser in the future. Does anyone know if HTC will offer a fully functional (for lack of better terms) unlocked kaiser. By fully functional, I mean with all the hardware features like dual cameras along with the ability to handle the 1700 band for tmobiles 3g network.
i have an unlocked kaiser on tmobile and it works perfect. The hope is that t-mobile will purchase another frequency that works with the kaiser!!!
that's all fine and good but with the currently available kaiser (and also the TILT once released and unlocked) you will not be able to take full advantage of tmobiles 3G network once launched. I'd like to keep tmobile as my US provider while still having the front cam for video calls.
I would also like to change from ATT to T-mobile with my current unlocked Kaiser. I am hoping that the current kaiser is just a, "Rom change" away from picking up the 1700 Mghtz 3G frequency when T-Mobile brings it out.
Anybody here have any idea, if the Kaiser is hardware capable of picking up 1700? You would assume, that it would be easier and cheaper to put the hardware in there and just disable it with software.

I wouldn't worry to much. By the time tmob gets 3g maybe late 08 in some areas maybe 09 there will be another latest greatest phone

Good point...
I figure in on the 'newer phone' liklihood as well. I had a Wizard and thought the remaining feature differences (GPS, Tilt display, faster processer, double RAM, double storage, SDHC support, etc) were more than enough to justify an upgrade. I am using in on T-Mobile with the great data plan. I have access to WiFi when I need speed (Sling, Orb, etc), so EDGE is good enough for uses at other times (casual web browsing and push email).
I'm sure they will release their version of the Kaiser before 2008 if they want to reap the rewards...and, I don't think they will release it without the 3g network running as their version is supposed to support the 1700 band. Of course, their version will be lacking other features of the hardware like the front facing camera. In turn, my original question about wanted a fully featured unlocked Kaiser remains.
Additionally, to the person hoping thecurrent kaiser may have 1700 support through a rom update, from what I hear the answer is no. I am told it is a hardware issue and the hardware on the current kaiser model is not equipped to handle it.

You might check this thread out. Dont know if it will work here.
I don't believe HTC will make a Kaiser for tmo here but this variation could come here. If you look at the phones released to ttmo and att most of the light and young peoples phones are released to tmo and the more work oriented are released to att (excluding the Iphone which should have went to tmo but was att shot to bring in some young blood. just my ho for what its worth
d
Thanks dwella,
However, i feel pretty confident that T-mobile US will release the Kaiser for many reasons. Mainly because they have already cleared their version of the device through the FCC and there is a Tmobile manual for the device that is clearly for the US market (as it mentions specifics exclusive to the T-mo US market such as My Favs, etc. They don't exist in UK). The FCC also list Tmobiles variant as having the 1700 band and as you may know, Tmobile US is setting up half of their 3g network on that band (upstream I believe). Since that band is not used in UK (or anywhere iirc) it's pretty certain that the documentation is for the US.
Then again, this is all speculation.
My problem however is that I want a fully featured unlocked Kaiser with all bands and all hardware options. I take residence in both US and abroad (Asia). Asia is no issue as the bands are common. Tmo US is my provider in the states though (and I have a really, really god data plan through them) and want 3g to work through them when in the US. Since the fact that they will use the 1700 band is my main hang up (otherwise, I probably would have had the Kaiser on day 1 )
The wait and uncertainty is killing me...I even emailed HTC some time ago about this but they have not responded.

Hi all,
I've searched the forums and the internet but i couldn't find the answers. I just signed up for the sidekick prepaid plan and I want to get it to work with my rooted G1. I've heard of people that are able to get it to work but no actual tutorials. My main problem right now is that I'm not getting any internet. what APN settings do I put on the phone? I also get an error saying I can't login to the google servers. how do I log in? My Att sim works but i just want to use the prepaid plan thanks everyone.
I had a friend with a prepaid sidekick plan and I rooted his G1 and he could only use net services thru wifi
Hey thanks for the reply!
i actually figured out what was going on. I had WisyncPlus running and it was automatically disabling my APN's even after booting. So if you have WisyncPlus make sure to uncheck the disable APN button. FWIW, here are my APN settings:
APN: hiptop.t-mobile.com
leave everything else blank
Username: dummy
Password: dummy
MMS protocol: wap 2.0
MCC: 310
MNC: 260
So anyway, It's running smooth and i can get 3G too! all for $1.00 a day.
Still going?
hey agentkalaw is this still working for you?
I just bought a prepaid sim today and changed it over to the sidekick plan, but my g1 (running cyanogen) can't connect to the internet! I tried using your setting but no luck.
No, it is fixed and no longer works.
thats too bad... but thanks for the fast response!
Hi all,
I have a question to those more knowledgeable about GSM network/settings (I come from a CDMA background). I bought my girlfriend a Captivate on EBay for Christmas; everything is working OK except it cannot get any signal. As far as I know everything is set up as it should, it just won't show any bars. While using the ServiceMode app [*#0011#] it goes from NO SERVICE to GSM : LIMITED and back over and over. While using her old phone in the same spot it has full bars. We went to the ATT store and made sure everything was set up on their end. I think the phone is defective but I figured I would check here first. I'll attach some relevant (I think) screen caps and if anything jumps out or you have anything for me to try and fix this, please let me know.
edit/
Also does anyone know the exact location of the internal antenna? I opened the phone up to see if something came lose during shipment or whatever and I didn't really get anywhere. I wanted to try and jury rig a extended antenna to see if that helped reception.
You flashed that ROM/theme on the phone? Or it came like that when you bought it?
That is Serendipity 5.1.. I figure while she can't use the phone as a phone, she should still benefit from a nice rom and kernel. When I received the phone originally it had the stock rom. Before I flashed a custom I made sure to check everything out first and the problem was there since the beginning. Since then I've flashed back to stock, tried different radios, etc etc but the results are always the same.
I don't know what the person before me did to the phone though, maybe he/she flashed something incorrectly and wrote over important settings? I don't know what I'm looking at that's really why I am asking here.
Grabbed some more settings, anything seem strange or wrong?
Stupid question, but do you have an active AT&T Sim card in the Phone? btw, these phones absolutely, positively will not work on Sprint or any other CDMA carrier.

Yes I have her new Sim card which was activated at the store over the weekend. I can switch it between her two phones, old one full bars, Captivate no bars.
Check you APN Settings. Menu> Wireless and networks > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names and let us know what they are, and we can go from there.
Says ATT WAP
Tap where is says att wap and check the settings to see if they match these:
Name: ATT WAP
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
Port: 80
Username:not set
Password:not set

MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
mms port - 80
mcc 310
mnc 410
authentication type - none
apn type- internet + mms
If not, adjust them accordingly and see if it clears up. If not I'd say you have a serious hardware problem.
Those settings look good to me. Thanks for the help I suppose my problem is more serious. Anyone know of anything else I can check to maybe narrow my problem down? I'm not afraid to try and replace a radio/circuit board/internal antenna.
enter *#2263# and check that band selection is set to automatic.
Yep set to AUTOMATIC - Select GSM & WCDMA All Bands
Is there something equivalent to a PRL for GSM phones? Something that tells it what towers it can connect to?
idk if its related but i have poor signal problems too with my phone sometimes only shows bars and no h or edge and sometimes just says no service or emergency calls only
Yeah same here, right now it says Emergency calls only. I know for a fact that there are at least 6 GSM cell towers in this vicinity.
Can this issue have something to do with a failed unlocking attempt? I've been trying to research all routes and I tried to "unlock" to phone by using SGS Unlock Tool (rooted method), it was never successful. It states "Sorry, no codes found unknown error", possibly meaning that something internally is screwed up? I'm just pulling stuff out of my bum at this point. Any help will be appreciated!
Last bump for the weekend. Any suggestions? Already bought a new one but I still have 30 days to return it if I can figure out how to fix this.

Simple Mobile SIM card will work with your SIM locked T-mobile Dell Streak 7.
I was able to get my Simple Mobile card to work perfectly by overwriting the existing T-mobile APN settings and hitting save. It will NOT work if you try to add brand new APN settings list unless you are able to get the unlock code from T-mobile and it's not easy.
So open the T-mobile APN list and make it look like this:
Name: Simple Mobile
APN: simple
Proxy: [empty]
Port: [empty]
Username: [empty]
Password: [empty]
Server: [empty]
MMSC: http://smpl.mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
MMS Proxy: 216.155.165.50 or [empty]
MMS Port: 8080 or [empty]
MCC: 310
MNC: 260
APN Type: [Empty]
Then hit the menu button and select "save". You''ll see your radio restart and BAM you're enjoying your Dell Streak a whole lot more.
Remember the default T-mobile settings will show back up if you do a factory reset.

Mine has been working great with the Simple Mobile sim card. However, after rooting and installing Clockwork Recovery, I did a factory reset, now I can't get the unit to reboot. Every time I turn it off it only will go into Recovery.
Anyone able to help me out?
I work with simple mobile as a retailer. Yes the DS7 CAN work with simple mobile (No unlock needed), even the 4G network ability. Now I would NOT suggest using the 40 or 60$ Voice plans. Reason is, you dont HAVE voice calling on the DS7. You are mostly a internet and text. Which on THOSE plans, they would cut you off after you reach too much data.
I would recommend getting the 45$ broadband plan, gives you 4G speed up to 2 GB of data. Then change the APN.
how change the APN?
what benefits does that give. The data begings again?
Thats one question still not sure of.. Being that its a broadband plan... they may have it set to 4G up to 2GB then slow down the rest of the connection afterwords. However I have not had anyone come up to me and complain like they do when they used too much data on a phone service. Cause THAT one I know Simple mobile WILL turn off internet, they send warnings out 1st. Then they shut it off till you pay for the next cycle, but sadly they force a customer to wait too. Virgin Mobile least gives people the option to restart a plan from that date.
Speed on Simple
What kind of speeds are you getting on the streak 5 and 7? I have them both, and am considering switching to Simple this week!
Depends on your area. How you can check? Talk to a T-Mobile dealer, try to find out what kinda 4g coverage you have. Then based on that 4g signal and speed, will be how well simple mobile works. Closer you are to that 4g tower, the better.
Brother, I sure as hell COMPLAINED MY ASS OFF! I was streaming music at my desk. Then two or three days later, BOOM, they cut me down to 2g speeds. I was as pissed as a Pitbull!
So I learned my lesson, **** THAT SAYS IT'S UNLIMITED, ISN'T!
I'm now running HC 3.2 on my DS7, I do like the battery life already. I don't like that I'm not getting my 4G speeds I was getting before, I home I can find a fix for this through the forums.
There is no fix. Its a carrier thing. You are lucky it was only a slowdown and not suspended data. Customer today came in to show me the message about warning him for data. Cause he was tethering with his PC.
Hey guys I just switched from captivate to Gnote, and trying to setup the data network here.
I had the original 3g plan with att, and I read on gsmarena that this phone supports LTE 700 which is what att is using right now.
So I am just wondering, is this phone capable of using the att 4g? do I need to get a new sim from them in order to get on the 4g network?
Thank you very much in advance!
LTE version or hspa version
did you buy the Korean Note that supports LTE or have a regular HSPA note. the regular note only supports the AT&T hspa and needs an 4g apn.

In short, GSMarena got it sorely wrong. The internationally available version of the Note, with the Exynos chipset, most certainly does not support LTE in any shape or form. It should also be mentioned that Verizon also uses 700MHZ LTE as well, but both AT&T and VZW use totally different blocks within that spectrum space anyway. So, I would find it strange that GSMarena may possibly claim that not only does the Note have support for 700MHZ LTE, but also every possible carrier block therein. Seems unlikely to me...
There are however carrier specific versions of the Note based off a completely different Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset designed to work on very specific LTE networks in other parts of Asia (mainly in Korea), and AT&T is rumored to have commissioned Samsung to build them their own specific LTE version of the Note as well. HOWEVER, I would fervently recommend AGAINST buying any kind of device commissioned and built specifically for any particular carrier. ALWAYS buy unlocked devices. By buying unlocked equipment, you are taking power away from the carrier that they would otherwise have over you when it comes to your consumer choice. Not to mention all the benefits and the freedoms you should enjoy by owning your own equipment, free of any carrier imposed limitations, bloatware *ahem*CarrierIQ*ahem*, and whatever other diabolical things carriers will inevitably do to our precious equipment.
Anyway, I'm getting side-tracked here...
To get your Note fully functional, and running optimally on AT&T, it's not quite as simple as just popping your SIM card in and off you go...
The three basic things you need to do are as follows:
1. Make sure you have the correct account provisioning.
2. Configure and use the correct APN('s).
3. Disable Fast Dormancy.
I'll cover these in more detail below, but first of all I need to clarify something: the Note supports 21mbit HSPA+, which if you want to call that 4G, OK fine. Personally I try to avoid marketing catch-phrases like "3G" and "4G" altogether, so henceforth I shall refer to the Note's mobile connectivity by what it actually is: HSPA+
Now, before you're able to fully take advantage of HSPA+, you'll need to make sure that your account is properly provisioned for that feature, otherwise you'll run into a virtual speed limit which will keep your device from reaching its full speed potential. So, in order to check that you have the correct provisioning on your account, you should call in to customer service and make sure you're on a proper 4G (not LTE 4G either!) plan. Ask them if you have the correct SOC code. In my case (grandfathered unlimited data user), my SOC code should be "HSDPB." If you're on a tiered plan, it'll be something else. Either way, you need to be on a 4G plan of some sort.
"Ok, how do I do that then?"
Easy. Go to you local store and get the IMEI from a similar Samsung device (from a connectivity standpoint anyway), like an Infuse 4G, or a non-LTE Galaxy S2. From the dialer, enter in *#06#, and the IMEI should show up. Make a note of that number (hehehe). You can probably find another IMEI on the internet, too, but either way you need that. When you call in to AT&T customer support, just tell the rep that you've upgraded your device to a *insert name of device from which you got the IMEI* that you bought on eBay or something, and you want to make sure that you're on the correct plan. Provide them that IMEI, and now your account should be provisioned for HSPA+ (YAY! WOO!).
Now that that's out of the way, you need to configure your APN or APN's if you're using more than one (this only usually applies if you're grandfathered into an older plan). Go to Settings => Wireless and network => Mobile networks => Access Point Names. From here, tap the menu button and select "New APN."
Populate the fields as follows (Case sensitive!):
Name: Doesn't matter, you can call this whatever you want.
APN: Phone
Proxy: <not set>
Port: <not set>
Username: <not set>

MNC: 410
Authentication type: <none set>
APN type: internet + mms (if you're on a tiered plan) or just internet (if you're on a legacy grandfathered plan).
This APN info above is for achieving the highest possible speeds over HSPA+
The next APN generally offers slower data speeds, but depending on your area may not be any different in terms of speed after all. This is the old legacy Cingular APN, and you need to input these settings if you're on a grandfathered legacy plan, otherwise you may not be able to send/receive MMS properly.

Congratulations! You should have now successfully set up both your account and your APN's properly for making your Note fully functional on AT&T! You should now at the very least be able to get onto the internet and browse etc. Pat yourself on the back!
But wait! There's more!
You still have to disable a feature on your Note called Fast Dormancy. Fortunately, this is really quick and easy to do. But first, what the hell is that, and why do I have to disable it? Well without getting all technical, simply put, it's a feature which allows a device to very quickly switch from an idle data state to UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+ and back to idle again, and generally work more efficiently, thus improving performance, and saving battery life. Problem is, in order for this feature to work, BOTH the device and the network that device is on need to support it. Unfortunately, AT&T does not currently support Fast Dormancy. As a result, by having fast dormancy enabled on your device, it'll have the complete opposite effect than what it was intended to have. Basically, your battery life will suck more, data connections will be erratic, slow, and unreliable, and you're basically wasting data overhead on a feature that, for AT&T, just doesn't exist. Disable it, and your Note will fly like it was intended.
To disable Fast Dormancy, from your dialer, enter in *#*#9900#*#*
This should pull up your SysDump menu. There, close to the bottom it should indicate your current Fast Dormancy state, enabled by default. Select that option, and it should indicate that Fast Dormancy is disabled. Exit and enjoy! Reboot the phone for good measure though. You generally don't have to, but sometimes it irons out any issues that may arise.
Hope this all helps! Enjoy your Note on AT&T!!
P.S. Hey Moderators!! Can we by any chance get this tutorial posted up as a sticky? Seems to be the best way to consolidate for AT&T users. Thanks!

The "phone" and "pta" while using the SIM that came out off my streak. Got a SIM provisioned through a SkyRocket, and those APN's worked.

Gotcha. Wouldn't surprise me that the pta APN wouldn't have worked, because if I'm not mistaken, I believe that's the LTE only APN anyway.
Great post !
Thx for the 4-1-1!!! This was great. However, one question, i got the skyrocket for Xmas, I put the sim in and used the 'pta' APN i found on this site. Is that OK? im gettting download speeds ~2 - 2.5. Is that what the non-LTE apn speeds are like? or should i change the IEMI number with ATT as you described and get a regular 4g plan (non LTE)? thx again

Honestly, I doubt you'll need to change your plan as such. However, I would avoid using the pta APN, mainly because it's monitored and regulated much more heavily than the other two I listed above. From what I read a few months ago on the Skyrocket forums, people on the pta APN were running into issues where they were getting throttled pretty badly, and in some cases, even if they weren't throttled, some websites were simply blocked outright. The solution was to fall back to the older APN's. Now I don't know if the issues with the pta APN have been fixed or not, but I would still avoid it on principle.
As for your average speeds on HSPA+, my understanding is that the Skyrocket falls back to 21mbit HSPA+ anyway when LTE is unavailable, so I would assume that your account provisions should already be set up to take full advantage of that on your Note. That being the case, yes, the speeds you are seeing are consistent with average/normal HSPA+ performance.
Feel free to read the link in my comment about 4 posts ago to understand a little more about what kinds of speeds to expect based on a number of environmental factors.
Thanks so much for this info. This needs a sticky!
After trying both APN's listed in this thread, im not able to fully receive MMS messages. I get a message with a download button, but the pic will not dl after touching the button.
I came from a skyrocket, in an LTE area, then used a cheap samsung gophone for a week (what misery!) while waiting on my GNote. I looked under message settings, and do have a retrival phone number, and checked "automatically download". Text mesaaging works fine. Any advice?

Jade

Fantastic post! Thanks. I have had luck with the "phone" APN, but had no idea about the fast dormancy.

Get rid of all the MMS info in the wap.cingular APN, and set up a new APN with that info and call it "AT&T MMS" or something like that. When you set the type to MMS only, that APN will remain active always (no green button next to it) and you should receive MMS normally.

It looks like you forgot to populate the MMSC field. You've got MMS Proxy filled out, but not MMSC.
