E: cant open /cache/recovery/command
i now have root again but get this line at system recovery, cant apply new cm rom, or recovery image
help appreciated!!
You can flash the recovery image through fastboot
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
im sure i never had this much trouble getting the cm recovery image before i knacked the phone, someone willing to help??
What do you mean by you now have root again??
I think you're trouble is that you need to update your system recovery, which is the fastboot command B-man007 posted in his response
Try re-reading cyanogen's wiki especially the part about Cyanogen's Recovery image (there's also a link to the thread for that image in my signature)
Also your info is pretty vague as far as what problem you're having, where you're stuck, what steps you've taken to get as far as you have. The more information you provide the easier it is to help!!
hey. sorry for being vague
right. i used to have the cyanogen recovery image. i used this to update my phone using the apply and zip from sd opton, i downloaded the latest cm rom and it wouldnt boot, i still had an old update.zip file on my sd, so ran this and it got even worse, so i used the dreamimg.zip, this reverted me back to 1.1 WITH NO ROOT
all i want is the new cm rom and the cm recovery image,
ive been reading some old posts that say if i flash an old jf rom it gets rid of my cache/recovery problem, but i cannot find anywhere to download this zip as its no longer on his blog!
also i dont know how to do this fastboot thing, where do i put that command? telnet? android sdk? (i cannot use the latter)
point of insanity now
I'm pretty much copying & pasting something I told some earlier here
Nice graphical guide for installing Cyanogen's Recovery Image
http://androidandme.com/2009/08/news...android-phone/
I'm not sure if flashrec works with RC29 which is what version you should be on after flashing DREAIMG.nbh, but you can give parts A1, A2, & A3 a shot, that would probably be the easiest way to update your recovery. If you can't get flashrec to work skip down to B2 and that will show you how to do it using telnet which does work from RC29
Once you have that imagae istalled, go to cyanogen's wiki and start back at the section titled "File Download" and you should be back on track
[double posted for some reason]
link you posted does not work!!
Sorry about that, I think it's cause I copied something I posted earlier and it had been shortened. Here ya go, working this time
http://androidandme.com/2009/08/news/how-to-root-a-t-mobile-g1-and-mytouch-3g-android-phone/
thanks, im trying this as we speak, thanks for youre help its much appreciated
i can actually flash my phone with the latest build but it wont sign in to my google account with a data connection, so i cant use the market or the internet!!
is there a problem with this rom? it says its stable!!
I'm not sure exactly where you're at, at this point
I know you flashed DREAIMG.nbh, which would have brought you back to RC29 which is a working stock build. From there you should have been able to sign in with your google info and been able to gain market access
The steps I've helped point you towards, will help you get the CM recovery, and then update your phone to the latest cyanogen build
im going to reflash dreamimg.nbh, then i can use the app in the link to flash the cm recovery image, and update to the latest cm build, when i reflash dreamimg.nbh i will have to root again? sorry, its getting late and i really need this fixed before bed!!
From RC29 after flashing DREAIMG.nbh
Go to here you and use section's A1,A2 & A3 if flashrec works
If it doesn't use section B2. Now you should have Cyanogen's Recovery Image
Now go to Cyanogen's Wiki and pick up at the section called "File Download" Those steps will guide you through installing the ADP image and then updating with the newest Cyanogen build

Hello everyone,
first off, I'm new to all this. Here's my situation,
I was trying to install a new ROM on my G1 and I found instructions on how to gain root access to my phone. I felt like I had followed the instructions but I can't seem to get the ROM installed on my phone. I downloaded Recovery Flasher and installed it. I chose "Backup recovery image" and then "Flash Cyanogen Recovery 1.4" and it all seemed fine, but then when I rebooted my phone and tried to install the new ROM it wouldn't let me. But I think I know what the problem was, I missed the step where I had to rename the folder of the ROM to "update." I went back to factory settings and tried to re-do the steps but this time, Recovery Flasher gives me the options to:
Download Recovery Image
Restore Backup Image
this confuses me because it's not the same as it was the first time I tried it. Does this mean my phone is already rooted? I tried to uninstall and install it again and same 2 options come up.
I know i was doing it right at first because I got all the correct screens that I saw on the instructions, but now I don't. I've been searching here and all over google to see if I can find an answer but I couldn't so I decided to make a thread to see if someone can help.
Thanks!
AFAIK the one-click method doesn't survive a full reboot, because when you reboot the OS it overflashes the recovery partition again with the original (unless you've flashed a new ROM)
Now your problem seems to be the "folder" bit. You do not unzip the ROM, you put, eg, "update-cm-4.0.4-signed.zip" on your SD card as-is. You also no longer need to rename it to use from this recovery partition.
I see,
well, when I tried it with update-cm-4.0.4 (that's what I was trying to install) it said that the file could not be found, and then I read that I'm supposed to change the file name to "update" and when I did that, it found it right away but it gave me the error "No Signature" (something along those lines) even though according to the place where I download it from, it is signed.
Should I just try to boot into recovery mode again and try it out again? I remember the very first time I tried it loaded the screen with a bunch of options, but now it just has 3, Boot Into Home, Wipe, and Apply SDcard zip, I might be wrong on the exact wording of those options but that's all I get...
and recommendations? Thanks for your response
nevermind, I got it to work! Thanks
Not trying to be dumb but i been using JF 1.5 for like 6 month (completely forgot about xda and android stuff for about 4 month since i busy with school).
So now i got JF 1.5 and i want the new Cyanogen V 4.2.3.1 since i did read alot and seem like the best one for now.
And so i did try to install......for about 4 HOURS.
I tried :
- JF 1.5 -> Cyanogen V 4.2.3.1 = Stuck at the boot screen
- JF 1.5 -> cm-recovery-1.4.img -> signed-dream_devphone_userdebug-ota-14721.zip -> Cyanogen V 4.2.3.1 = After boot screen (when it suppose to come on the welcome screen) it just turn blank...the screen is one but completely blank.....
- I WIPE again -> HTC ADP 1.6 DRC83 -> Cyanogen V 4.2.3.1 = Samething, blank page.
So what did i do wrong? I did do the install of the recovery Img 1.4 and the ota-radio-2_22_19_26I.zip.
I did wipe everytime i install something.
Sorry for the bothering and noob asking for help but i do need help....i tried my best and sitted here for 4 hours already
And talking about those Guide on WIKI, i tried to follow all of them and still.......only thing i didnt try is reflash, unroot, root again and do the install of new ROM
Is your SD card partitioned correctly?
You need:
FAT32
EXT 2/3/4
Linux-swap
Do you have those three partitions?
If so, did you wipe your EXT partition?

i have the Class 6 8GB though, what shud i do?
Quick update.
I just follow the Stock to Cyanogen Post to upgrade.
I reflash the whole phone, root then Cyanogen again with format 3 Partition of Fat32 (7000MB), ext2 (700MB) and Linux-swap (150MB) and it still doesnt work, stuck at boot screen this time.....i really really dont know what to do now, i tried everything
alright buddy, you don't need to have any ext or linux swap partitions to run cyanogenmod
just make sure you have his recovery image, 1.4, or amon ra's recovery flashed on your phone
now you might as well just flash the haykuro "death/danger" spl to repartition your phone's internal memory. flash the radio before the spl
now go into recovery and wipe data/cache,
follow cyanogen's directions on how to upgrade
flash the adp 1.6 htc recovery image file from the htc site, DO NOT REBOOT
immediately flash the latest cyanogenmod update on top of that, reboot,
it'll give you some stuff about writing the radio, just let it do it's thing
now you're done, boot up
and give it some time.
first boot takes a little bit more
enter your credentials into your phone, let it sync
then reboot again, it lets everything soup together

I just did the exactly same thing u said and it get past the Boot G1 Screen, then pas the Cyanogen Screen then it get stuck at a blank screen again, what wrong with that?
Since you're able to get to the "Cyanogen" screen -- do you have adb installed on your computer? A logcat of what's going on would be useful.
Alternatively; try flashing the "illegal" version of the newest Cyanogen ROM -- the "single flash" update. However, do it a little differently than you'd otherwise expect.
With the old JF 1.5, install Cyanogen Updater from the Market. Download any update -- doesn't matter what; you won't be flashing it.
Download the single-flash version of Cyanogen's actual ROM from the developer forum; and then dump it into the same folder that the CM Updater app dumped to. From within the contextual menu of the CM Updater app, choose "existing update" -- and then flash the single-update version.
//SOMETIMES//, flashing a ROM via the CM Updater will produce different results than flashing it "manually". I have no explanation for why this is, but I /have/ seen it happen.
Hi there,
I too am running JFV1.51 and wish to change to Cyanogen 4.2.15.1.
I have the iamage from HTC but nothing changes when I flash it and attempt to immediately flash Cyanogen over it?
Did you have any luck in resolving this issue/
Many thanks!
You guys that are having issues need to use ddms or adb shell logcat to see whats going on.
Going from Cupcake to Donut is going to change a lot in your phone and will take several minutes to complete. Most of which is in Framework. That Android boot animation that pops up is in there so thus it may seem like it's stuck at the G1 logo. Also you should consider flashing your phone to the newest radio (2.22.19.26I or 2.22.23.02).
ok this is what you really do lol no if ands or butts to this method.
goto www*androidhustler*blogspot*com and scroll down and search for ( 2010 how to get latest cyanogen mod ) download all apropiate files and begin steps.
let me know how easy these steps are and email me with any questions at: b6gsix#gmail*com

E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip
Hi,
Firstly, many thanks!
However, after following this comprehensive and generally straight forward guide I still can't flash the new CM!
I followed all the steps exactly, downgrading to RC7 (I'm in the UK) & re-rooting the phone.
When I reach the stage of flashing Android 1.6 Base Image, the CM ROM & the radio it states:
E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip
and aborts!!!
I also do not have the option of alt+a only alt+s which is apply sdcard:update.zip
Where am I going wrong? And what should I do?
Thanks,
Joe

If you don't have ALT+A available, you have a recovery loaded other than what the guide says/thinks you should have. Are you using the recovery it suggests? Be it Amon Ra, Clockwork, etc.
Hi,
I was initially running Jesus Freak cupcake 1.5. Now the phone is currently at RC7 and rooted using telnet after starting the whole process again.
I am currently following the guide on the cyanogenmod wiki. I am using the recovery image suggested: CM recovery 1.4 img.
However, when I get to the stage for Flash Android1.6 & CyanogenMod latest I get stuck and states E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip.
All other guides seem to be specific to the US, for example androidhustler. I don't where to go next!
Please help!
Ok I have been reading up on some posts and figured out that I have an adp rom on my G1 when I bought it. I know I can access root, because when I use the terminal I get # after inputting su. My question is, do I just upload the cyanogen rom now?
yes you can follow these instuctions
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Upgrading_From_Older_CyanogenMod_Versions
if you dont have CM-1.4 or AmonRA's recovery, i would recommend you update to them
so i need to upload android 1.4 recovery image, then upload 1.6 recovery and do the rest?
Yup. just dont get confused by the terminology.
the 1.4 recovery image is where you flash the update.zip i.e the the screen the comes up when you hold home+power
the 1.4 version adds a lot of features including flashing any zip on the root of the sdcard, regardless of the name
the HTC 1.6 is actually an update.zip which contains the stock ADP ROM
Make sure you follow the instructions very carefully or you will end up doing more work than you bargained for lol
Okay i am fully aware of how a forum works and how much i am going to get flamed for this. I really need to go to bed and it would be nice to not have to go find a new phone tomorrow.
I installed JFv1.41 perfectly fine, had the root running etc.
I went to install a Theme, i ran the update.zip...now my phone just gets stuck on the TMOBILE G1 screen...not the flashing droid.
I can boot into Home+Power and into Camera+Power
i have HARD SPL on my root, but it is named update_OG is there anyway i can execute that to fix my problem?
Thanks
d
please can anyone help. Do i need to get a SD card reader and put a recover.img on it...i deleted it on accident because i am anuberchaun.
was the theme made for JF 1.41?
If not, that's why you are hanging on the screen.
What recovery do you have? Can you enable UMS from your recovery? If so, you can just copy a new rom and flash it.
If not, you need a memory card reader and put a new rom on it, then flash.
You are going to need to wipe obviously. I hope that goes without saying.
You should also condsider updating to a newer rom. You are still on RC33 with that I believe. Find a donut rom, like Dwang's. I would recommend you get the new Cyanogen, but that involves flashing more than one thing at a time, and I don't know if you will be able to do that without messing it up... No offense.
Okay so in my HARD SPL on boot, it says no IMAGE file. I have manually uploaded a image file to my SD's root folder. Why wont it see it?
Okay, im in deep. Last resort. Trying to reflash to rc29...only problem is it says not signature on 3 files. I definitely lost root. I using the stock rc29 though why wont it work? Maybe i have the wrong rc29 can anyone help?
Why would you flash a rom in fastboot? You were supposed to do it in your recovery. That's where you went wrong. You say you have rc29 now? Just reroot the phone then.
i cannot re root the phone because it will not get past the flash screen.
i didn't re-flash from fastboot, i did it in recovery. Ive tried re flashing a few times now. I am running jf v1.4 i can not go to any original rom, i also cannot find a DL for a OEM rom. I am trying to reflash to rc29 using the link found in at (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480) the DREAMIMG.nbh file. I was assuming that was a stock ROM, but when i try to reflash to that it says 3 files (no signature)....i was under the impression stock ROM's did not require ROOT access to flash.
i have also tried rc27
FIXED
everything i needed was right here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=592662
Ok, let me start off by saying my phone is currently not bricked. I can get into recovery(H+P) or fastboot(C+P) just fine. My problem lies with the last step of rooting when I flash the new ROM. I am currently trying to flash v4.2.15.1 which is apparently the latest Cyanogen Mod.
Now I've tried two different methods and both won't boot after the ROM is flashed.
The first method is "method B" seen over at the AndroidAndMe website. This method works fine and I can get back into the phone all the way to the point of flashing the SPL and then the ROM. It installs fine, but after reboot it gets stuck on the G1 startup screen.
The second method is the wiki guide for updating from original OS to Cyanogen. This one is a bit different using the Android 1.6 base image. The installation on this method goes smooth up untill the last reboot after flashing the ROM just as the other method. The difference here is instead of it hanging at the G1 startup screen, it get's just past that to a blank backlit screen. No images, no android logo, no sound, no nothing.
Like I said before, I can still access recovery and fastboot which seams to be my only way out. I have repeated this process multiple times on both methods with the exact same results. Fastboot keeps bringing me back to the Android 1.0 firmware(RC29) which is atleast giving me access to a phone while I try to figure this out.
Suggestions? Ideas? I really need to get this phone working again.
I am always on AIM "DeathstarsOG" if that is more convienient for those offering up some help.
What steps did you take to flash the rom?
Did you read the steps outlined in his wiki? The most important step is to flash DRC83_base_defanged.zip first, then his rom over the top.
dbl post sorry.

I followed the steps on both writeups exactly how they were written. As far as the wiki one, I already had a few of the files needed from trying the Androidandme method. Also, my phone is basically already downgraded to the RC29 so thats another step i can skip. All needed files are already on my SD card and were installed in the following fashion:
DREAIMG.nbh
cm-recover-1.4.img
DRC83_base_defanged.zip
update-cm-4.2.15.1-signed.zip
ota-radio-2_22_19_26I.zip
My SD card is already formatted to FAT32
I set up the telnet to get access to recovery mode, wipe phone, then install DRC83, then the cm-4.2.15.1 and lastly the radio. I do a Home+Back reset after installing the radio and it goes past the G1 Startup screen, to a black lit screen of nothingness.
If you're looking at the wiki guide named: "Full Update Guide - G1/Dream Firmware to CyanogenMod" you'll see I basically am supposed to be seeing a update screen that loos like a open box with an arrow pointed down toward a phone after I do this reboot. Well, that doesn't happen. It just goes to that black screen.
Now I'm not a whiz when it comes to stuff like this however I can figure things out fairly sufficiently for the most part. But this has got me stumped. It sounds like I may have a corrupted version of Cyanogen as everything else I have been able to install and actually run on the phone(besides the DRC83). Or maybe I need to flash the radio before the DRC83? I haven't even gotten to the SPL, and after all this I may not want to.
I've done this process over and over atleast 8 times and I feel like I basically know every step by heart, but I still don't want to just guess at what it could be and risk a brick. So that's why I'm here. What do you guys think could be the issue?
Do not wipe the phone after istalling RC29. nbh file rewrites everything, and I mean it... everything.
Here's your order:
DREAIMG.nbh
Boot, sign-in, obtain root (telnet, connect to local host, you know the shpill).
Flash recovery (use ra 1.6.2, it's more updated then cm 1.4)
Wipe
Flash DRC83 defanged.zip
Flash ota radio, follow directions on the screen, you will need to reboot at least once
Flash 1.6 rom (cyan's is a good one to start at least)
Fix permissions.
Wipe
Reboot
Do not set-up linux swap or apps2sd at this time, it will complicate the process more then needs to at this point, you can do it all later.
Good luck.

You my friend are a genius!
Maybe the write-ups for rooting should be re-written to follow this as it worked flawlessly.
I started all the way back from step one at the default G1 1.6 Firmware.
Downgraded to the RC29.
DL'd telnet from the market.
Installed the new RA-recovery
Wiped.
Flashed DRC83.
Flashed Radio.(promted me to reboot)
Flashed the ROM.
Fixed Permissions.
Wiped again.
Then reboot.
Process went flawless, no hicups or anything. Thank you very much sir!
