I'm on an old Soulife build that's firmware 1.5
It's fine with me and all, I really appreciate this rom especially because I can get up to 24 hours of battery life on it with light texting where on my previous Cyan build I got 4 hours no matter what.
But I have played around on 1.6 builds and I kind of miss the screen shots available for apps and game previews.
Is there anyway I can flash it to my phone or run some scripts so I can get it? Or is it just tied strictly into 1.6 and can't work on 1.5 given all the coding?
I would suggest trying a few 1.6 builds. I use cyanogen 4.2.5 with light texting throughout the day and I charge my phone once every other day.
If you really want to save battery on a CM build just lower your brightness, don't install any themes (don't install any different lock screens) and turn off the gps. Also, don't use any widgets that use GPS like weather widgets, etc.
Like i said, with just texting, regular brightness and no heavy gps use i get more than 24 hours on my phone.
I'm not sure if you can use the 1.6 market on 1.5.

follow Mrandroid 's advice because your assumption is corrected as the new market is tied to 1.6

I currently have 5.0.8 on my G1. It runs terribly slow. All I want is a fast ROM. I want to be able to hit the home or back key and not have to wait 5 seconds for the phone to actually do it. I'm using automatic task killer too and I still have difficulty with performance.
Can anyone tell me what the best options are?

use swapper with swapiness 60 and some swap space (file), works great!
Just from my experience, stick with Android 1.6, don't go any higher than that
My opinion is that the G1's hardware was simply not meant nor is capable of running anything above Android 1.6 "well" and at a constant reliable speed.
I have used every ROM starting from JF 1.41 (Android 1.0) to the latest FroYo Roms (Android 2.2). I say the best, fastest and most stable ROM is SuperD (Android 1.6). I don't use the latest version of it... because the theme I love, DarkStar doesn't support it, but even my dated version of SuperD runs extremely well, I am certain the latest version of SuperD runs even better.
I have over 6000 text messages on my phone, I use all 5 screens on my home screen with a total of 10 widgets spread across them, including a Weather Clock which takes quite a bit of memory. Even so, the phone still loads everything very fast. (I do use CompCache and a 32 MB Swap)
I have stuck with SuperD for several months now and I am pretty convinced that this ROM is what I will use until the day I need to get a new phone, which is in half a year or so.

Fastest Roms on the G1 are probably Htcclays superbad 1.3.3 and SuperD
But if your looking for 2.1 roms I highly suggest Chromatic 3.8 by
far the fastest eclair rom for the g1.
enomther !!! 1.6 the original! speeedy and reliable!
anyone have a down load for any of enomther 1.6 or 2.1 roms? links seem to be dead and I've just returned to 2.22.23.02 trying to get t-mobile aosp while remaining rooted.
Anyone have the dl link for Htcclays superbad 1.3.3? And I don't understand the difference between superd white and black. Which ones better and faster?
http://files.androidspin.com/downloads.php?dir=htcclay/
It's somewhere in there
If you ever are looking for more ROMs look in:

db.androidspin.com has mostly dead links
Can somebody recommend me some nice ROM with decent multitasking? I don't care much about speed but I do care about keeping apps running in the background. I can't remember which ROM was my first one when I bought G1 back in January, but I remember multitasking was pretty good. Then I switched to Cyanogen 5 and tried different versions as they were released but all of them had appalling multitasking. I have now installed Complete Eclair and it's not really any better.
Just to clarify what I want to achieve - I want to be able to say open a website, go back to the home screen, open market and be able to switch back to the website exactly as it was when I left it. And then switch back to market and see it exactly as I left it. At the moment it's just not happening, every time I switch to any background application it sort of reloads itself. If your ROM can do this please let me know. Another thing - navigation. As far as I remember I used to be able to press power button to conserve battery and still have voice guidance. Now navigation gets killed as soon as I press power button. Again, if your ROM can do this properly please let me know.
I do need Exchange support so it will have to be at least 2.0 rom I suppose. The only Donut ROMs with Exchange support I have found are Sense ones and these are out of the question because of no BT support.
thanks
Probably not gonna find what you're looking for. Eclair and Froyo ROMs are so RAM intensive that not much room is left for decent multitasking. I'd say to try and use a giant SWAP partition and a modest compcache with whatever your favorite Eclair ROM is. This is gonna be dog slow most of the rest of the time though.
Isnt there an ap for 1.6 that lets you exchange sync im not sure but if there is remix cdvsi < somthin like that 40 mem when not using anythin wich i think is good ?
Turned out the latest Donut Cyanogen has Work Email which is good enough for me. I miss a few Eclair specific things but nothing too serious, so I guess problem solved.
I'm a older newbe to all of this so please bear with me.
I have a Sprint CDMA Hero running 2.27.651.6 PRI 2.20_003 and PRL 60670 that is rooted using the Universal 1 click app. I have a new 8g card in it with the following apps already loaded
Astro file manager
Clockwork Rom manager
Titanium back up
I have done a nandroid back up before with my 2 g sdcard but not since moving the files from my computer to the new card. Also I partitioned the 2gig that was in it with the Clockwork manager not the amonRA version.I have no partion on the new 8gig card as yet.
What I would like to know is..oh hell..just about everything for this
What I need from my phone is something fast, reliable, bluetooth capable,a nicer typewriter and looks really cool, and doesn't drain my batteries in 8hours of just standby, along with a decent camera tweak that will allow me to try to do something with all of this red haze I have no matter what setting I try. What I don't want is something that is not stable and I have to keep updating or resetting it all the time becasue of the phone locks up like my Windoz TP-2 6.5
Is this posasible in one of the new roms that are out right now ? I have no use for the TV function or NFL foot ball..nor tweeting anyone of looking at facebook,or peeping them. I use Dolphin HD browser and a lot of the apps from the market like the level and distance measure along with the audio spl meters.Heck I don't use any of the Nascar stuff either..I would like to have my music loaded on it so I can listen to it at work and I want good calculators on it as well. I haven't really seen any of the different roms with or without sense besides Windows 6.5 and what is on my Hero and a friends Evo..so I really know which kind will fit my needs and I really want to use..
So..long story short..Please help an old geezeer figure this out

Hey, welcome to the forums. Sounds like you're already off to a good start.
Based on what you've said, I think you might want to try Darchdroid 2.8 first. Here's the link to that: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=703133
It's free from all the HTC Sense and Sprint bloatware stuff, no Facebook, Twitter, AmazonMP3 junk either. It's very simple, clean, smooth, quick, and most importantly, even with all that stuff taken out it's still very stable for everyday reliable use. It has a music player, calculator, and I'm pretty sure the camera in it works just fine.
You could also think about trying out Cyanogenmod 6, link here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755795
It's running Android 2.2 (the next version of Android with newer features) and is currently very stable for everyday use. But it's also still in the process of development, so there are updates and changes still being made to it on a regular basis which you may need to apply occasionally. Many users are very happy with it though.
Hope this helps and gets you off on the right foot.
Is this really the decision we have to make?
V2.1
Pro
Better battery life
More stable
Con
Camera picture shifted by a pixel resulting in a line down the side.
Slower
Stuck with old 2.1 applications
V2.2
Pro
Faster
Newest applications such as GMail are much more usable, there are also new applications for 2.2+ only
Camera pictures turn out correctly
Con
Camera application crashes unexpectedly
General instability of the phone and its applications
Terrible battery life (at least 50% less on a good day)
ps. if any of these can be resolved please let me know. If you have anything to add to the list, also let me know. I've been switching back and forth between the two trying to figure out which I like more, but I find either way I'm terribly annoyed by something.
I disagree with the cons of v2.2.1, the camera works perfect, no instability and the battery lasts 1 1 / 2 to 2 days

+1, And i think that the battery drain deppends of the OC, and the care of the usser.
3 days with out changer with and extremly care and oc.
I see 2.1 is more stable and faster than 2.2
because and this is happened with me
apps installed in 2.1 are the same in 2.2
but 2.2 needs more time to open the desktop and the apps menu
and sometimes appear ( problem loading widget ) so i need to reload the widget
and for that reason I'm gonna stay on 2.1 because I'm tired with 2.2
notice\ If u have any solution for the problem mentioned above please
tell me

1 1/2 to 2 days... hmm. I never make it 48 hours on 2.2.. 36 with minor usage. But 2.1 with the same usage I usually make 3 days at least.

Fair enough, but I make 3 days normally on 2.1 with mine over-clocked to 1.1GHz. At least from what I remember. I have recently gone back to 2.1 and will report back if I'm thinking of 800 MHz and got confused.
On 2.2, with 700 Mhz I never lasted much more then 36 hours, so either way I feel 2.1 is doing much better.
What mod do you guys use? or just the un-modded beta kernel?

Maybe I'm missing something but the GMail app, for one, doesn't seem to be updated on 2.1? I can't even copy/paste, I don't have the new header, etc. Can anyone correct me on this if I'm wrong?
2.1 is definately more stable.. however faster I'd say I agree with you if you install JIT beta and overclock it (which is fine, considering it still runs longer for meoverclocked than the 2.2 kernel) but without those mods its a lot more laggy for the UI.
EDIT: Apologies, I just noticed the multi-quote button. Next time I promise not to spam post.
2.1 cons: can't upload directly from website. eg, imageshack. Don't have flash support on website. Apps2sd need tedious step to install.
2.2 cons: stock camera doesn't support widescreen. Wifi instability.
Lets see how official 2.2 perform.
No Milestone camera application supports widescreen.
The stock Motorola Camera has only a crop mode that strips the top and bottom parts of the picture (lowering its resolution) that is called "widescreen"...
Also, there's no 2.2 for Milestone yet, there is only an early 2.2 beta firmware available (and there are also 2.2 ROMs that depend on components - e.g. kernel, gsm/umts stuff etc. - extracted from the early beta, which makes them beta too).
So no fair comparison is possible at this moment.
I have to add that the motorola usb networking driver is rock solid on 2.2 unlike the one from 2.1 that hangs under heavy network traffic.
This is impacts the reliability of USB tethering.

It may be crop, but it still look nice.
Yeah, still waiting for the release of Q4 for EU..
Hello. Well seems Google+ doesnt install to a G1... so anyone have a apk that would work for me to install it? Also my youtube for awhile has been messed up, I need to reinstall it, but dont have a apk or updated youtube apk for it if someone can point me in the right direction? Thanks. =)
(Over 2 years with my G1 and I have not had a desire to replace it yet, even tho I have higher end phones)
It doesn't? Please describe your problem in more detail, because I'm using it just fine, on the latest iteration of COS-DS.
Perhaps you need a more recent Android; if this is the case, having the apk would not help you much...
Same for me here, running G+ and YouTube, both installed from the market. Seems to me that these apps need a higher API-Level, i.e. Donut isn't supported.
Well I am still running my G1 on Enoms 1.6 build. Always worked best. So didnt change it. Granted Youtube.. Not sure WHAT happened. It just doesnt want to update the homescreen of it, getting like a parsing error on it. Thats why I am looking for that apk
As for G+ the market doesnt let me install it.
Love my G1 too much to replace it. G2 was a contender but that temp root thing turned me off.
Enom's roms were great, I liked them very much and I was using them until mid of last year. Unfortunately he stopped development and if you want to be up to date, you need to switch, and since Terry provided us with ezGingerbread, I switched to that. Performance / speed is comparable to Enom's roms and I am on the lastest Android version
Thats a great review. I may have to do that... Trick is, I worry.. I have over 100 apps installed heh. While I can download them to my PC. Just not sure what else would wipe. Or do you need to wipe for that upgrade?
Unfortunately yes, ... no chance to keep apps / data. Ok, TitaniumBackup may be an option, contacts and calander come from google, but it's still a bit of work to do.
In addition to that you would probably like to upgrade to the 1.33.0013d/2.22.28.25 combo to gain 14MB of available RAM(!), which will cause additional work and risks(?) ...
I'd have to say that as a user with over 150+ apps and no desire to trim the fat I'm very shortly back off to E-Xtreme and danger spl with 26I radio as nothing ever came close to being as good on my phone for me above 1.6 (Hell I'm even thinking of dropping back to Super D 1.9.3 with DarkStars theme if I can find it, that black google search box with the ghoshed white outer glow always was the sexiest thing ever lol) because if your a user from my experience with a load of apps and have a lot of home screens with shortcuts and widgets then Froyo and especially gingerbread just ain't for you plain and simple. I kill them all in minutes and I'm not exactly a beginner at this stuff, by no means an expert either but I know enough to know that me and gingerbread will never work and well for some of us thats just how it is.
Heh yea, same here. I love my G1 even tho its about 3 years old. 1.6 is fine for my everyday use. My HD2 tho.. just found the <3 Android I was looking for.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=957652 (Along with WM 6.5)
But then back to the main issue at hand. I need the Youtube apk for the G1 =/ Would be nice to least be able to use that again heh.
see maybe i will met
No one knows how to redo Youtube or fix it? =/
Here's a link to the Youtube.apk file. It's version 2.1.6.
