Ok... I'll bite. Ringdroid from the market. Any other answer will take some info.

As in, the ringroid will put the ringtones in the sd card memory not the phone memory, i tried copy paste over but fail.

To place them into the phone memory you will need to either copy them using the terminal or push them through adb.
using adb, place the file(s) in your tools folder
Code:
adb push filename.mp3 /system/media/audio/ringtones
In the terminal, if you place them in the root of your sdcard
Code:
cp /sdcard/filename.mp3 /system/media/audio/ringtones
I am not sure if you need to remount or not to push/copy into the folder or not.

It says read-only file system as the error.

Try:
Code:
adb remount
That should fix the "read only" problem.

i'm not using adb... I'm using the second method which is in the terminal.

Do yourself a favor and go get Root Explorer from the market. It lets you move any file to anywhere.
Move your files to /system/media/audio/ringtones and remember to check to see if the files that are there are .ogg or .mp3. If they are .ogg just rename your files after you move them.

What you mean I have to rename the files after i move them?

What's the exact application name? I tried searching on market but could not find any.

I like SUFBS but ES (or estrong) file explorer is good also. SUFBS cost a buck or 2 but I think it is worth it. Either way your phone needs to be rooted for this. You do have root right?

Yeah, phone is rooted. I tried ES Strong Explorer but cannot work, it says something about permission or something like that..

I'm not sure if it's a "hero thing" but sometimes the file extensions in the ringtones folder are not .mp3. They are .ogg. If you look into the folder and see .ogg files just change the extension and you'll be all good.
As for the apps. Look for "Root Explorer". I believe there are both free and paid options. The paid one isn't very much $$ so, considering how much easier it makes things, give up the loot and support a dev.

I tried searching under market, but cant find it..

id use terminal with cmds, would be a tad faster and a bit more reliable, in my opinion, but as of searching on your behalf i have found root explorer a paid version and estrongs free version by searching "root" while in the market. estrongs sounds unstable. If your going to pay for a good file explorer get SU file manager&terminal. (and...SAA?ror)

How do I use terminals? I tried but that say permission thingy..

Did you mount the system?

OK dude. If you're rooted I assume you have somebody's recovery. Boot to recovery and go into console (Alt+x). Now do this.
<enter>
mount /system <enter> (maybe mount /system/media if just /system doesn't work)
mount /sdcard <enter>
cp /sdcard/yourfolder/yourringtone.mp3 /system/media/audio/ringtones <enter>
reboot
You should be good to go.

Can I do that in terminal? As in one of the application in my HTC Dream?

Nothing in system/sd

I have OI file manager and I go into the system/sd folder and i dont see anything. But when i install a new app, i do notice that my ex3 partition available space changes. So it seems that the apps are installing on the ex3, but why dont i see anything in the system/sd folder?
Also, how can i copy files from my sd onto my system/sd folder? Do I have to adb it?
Thanks guys.
I know this is one of my first posts but I have been lurking these forums for a loooong time.
You will not see anything in system/sd unless you have root access. You can either use SU File Browser if you want a GUI for browsing, or just open the terminal and enter
$ su
# cd /system/sd
# ls
I try not to go into detail on anything that can be used for warez, so let me just state that you can either use SU File Browser, or the terminal (with root access) to copy to system/sd. Remember to mount /system as read-write.

Boot animation location issues

ok so my data cable got wrecked (waiting for new one to arrive) and im using swiftp to get files onto my droid so how do i get the boot animation into data/local since astro and my computer wont let me view anything inside the data/ folder? i have terminal emulator app on my phone but not sure how to use the comands. how would i move bootanimation.zip into the correct directory?
Simple fix
Just search "Wireless ADB" on the Market, once you've got it set up (Google is your friend, but seeing as how you're already set up using swiftp sounds like you're good to go lol), do a little more Googling for the Terminal commands you'll need for ADB. Any questions, PM me and I'll do my best to help ya out (^_^)>b
Just use Root Explorer. It'll let you move, delete, copy, etc. any file anywhere all over your phone.

I agree. I just got Root Explorer on the Market and it works very well. You can also extract and compress zips. By far, the best file explorer I've used for Android!

[Q] how to properly uninstall apps on rooted n1

System -> Applications -> Manage -> All
Then select the app and click "Uninstall".
For apps like amazon mp3, you'll need to use adb shell and "rm" apps manually, or use a rom with these removed.
Code:
adb remount
adb shell <---(this should give you a prompt with a "#", not "$")
cd /system/apps (or something along those lines)
rm "specific app" (will be something along the lines of "com.something.android.apk")
That should do it. You just need to find out what the app names are that you want to delete. I'm not sure what all the proper names are, shouldn't be too hard to find.
will this remove data from apps also?
thanx for the answer so fast man, I like things simple and clean.
anyone now how to add the reboot option on stock rooted 2.2?
thanx in advance
I just realized that you can also use Root Explorer from the market.
I located com.amazon.mp3.apk inside /system/app/ folder using Root Explorer
and when i try to delete the file it says "com.amazon.mp3.apk" cannot be deleted because the file system is read-only
okay, so how do i delete this app really?

When using Root Explorer, it automatically loads in a read-only (R/O) mode to protect you from accidentally deleting important files. To modify system files, click the gray button at the top left that says R/W (read-write). This will allow you to delete any file regardless of permissions. Be careful.
Can ASTRO do this or does it have to be Root Explorer?
Remove the relevant entry from /data/data as well.
You should probably also update the package manager:
Code:
pm uninstall <package>

Astro can delete, but YOU need to remount.
ES File Explorer can remount at CM/HiAPK roms.
thanks. really helpful

[Q] Clarification on "push to..."

I've read many times around the forum that apps can be installed by pushing them to the correct directories, but I'm not quite sure how to do that. When my phone is connected to my PC, I can only view the /sdcard directory. In ES File Explorer I can view the other directories but I'm looking for some clarification on how to proceed with pushing apps
pushing means to move the app / file directly to the place it should be, instead of letting the phone do it.
example: if you have an app that will not install, you use a app such as root explorer (many others out there too) and you get that app, move it to /system /app and there ya go, the app is in its right place.
the same goes for files, and other things, there are lots and lots of folders / subfolders, and sometimes this method is the only way. its fairly simple.
i hope i cleared that up for ya ???

OK I think you have
I can put the app on my SDcard...then using ES File Explorer, I can copy the file, move to the directory I want, and paste the file. If I do this with an app, will it require installing, or will simply putting it in the proper directory allow me to run it ?
Thanks !
it will not need installing this is the beauty of it. Pushing it, you are putting it where it belongs - manually, hence the saying 'manually push through file explorer'
but once you have put the desired app / file in its correct place, its advised to reboot instantly, other wise it may not show up.
oh and finally, to do such things the system (phone) must be mounted as RW

Thanks for your help AzzleDazzle! Can I mount as RW through ES file explorer, or is it advised to do so through the ADB with standard linux chmod commands?
no you dont need to go through so much hassle.
im not sure if there is an option in file explorer for RW but there is with root explorer
you can also download sgs tools this can mount RW too, and even most kernels have this feature too

[Q] [AOKP] Cannot access root files to install boot animation

So, I've rooted my captivate and have installed build 32 of aokp.
I'm trying to install a custom boot animation. However i cannot access /system/media from my computer and when i try to copy and paste the .zip from the sdcard, file manager won't let me. /data/local does not exist.
I should mention i'm running blue infinium.
Any help? I'm pretty sure i'm being stupid but i've tried everything i can think of and read a bunch of threads.
Thanks in advance,
JSP

Unless I'm mistaken, you actually want to put your boot animation in /system/media.
And if you have ADB installed, you can just reboot to recovery, hook up the USB cable, put your bootanimation.zip into the /platform-tools folder where ADB resides, and issue this command:
adb push bootanimation.zip /system/media/bootanimation.zip
If you don't have ADB, you'll need to get a root-level file manager (ES File Explorer, Root Explorer, etc) to move the file.

I'm assuming ADB is an app, and the code i'm supposed to enter is entered on the phone through a terminal program?
Otherwise thanks, makes sense. Anyway to access /system files through windows explorer?
Thanks again
*EDIT* Also, thats what i've been trying to do with the file manager. But when the file is selected/cut/copied, i cannot access the root files. I have tried several different root file systems.

ADB is on the computer, you run it in terminal or command prompt. There isn't a way to access /system through windows explorer

Alright, thank you. Also, does terminal=cmd? I understand terminal can be on the phone, but i always thought, on windows anyway, that terminal is synonymous with command prompt.
Thank you all for the help

ADB is Android Debug Bridge - it's part of the Android SDK that you have to download and install from Google. It's a pretty handy tool to have.
As korockinout13 pointed out, no dice with the Windows Explorer seeing the root files, and terminal does equal cmd/command prompt.
With the explorer app on your phone, you'll have to look around and find a setting that will tell Android to mount your /system folder as read-write. I believe in Root Explorer there's a button near the top that switches read-only and read-write.
Looked around on explorer and couldn't find the setting. Root explorer costs 4$ and I've tried a couple others. All giving me the read only memory error. I'll just have to wait till I get home to do it over adb. Thanks for all the help.
root access wont let you "see" your root folders when you mount your phone as SD card.
adb is one of many options.
copy to sdcard, then use a root level manager to move
wait!! there was this on the portal today.... Quick ADB Pusher.. adb file pusher GUI
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/push-files-to-your-device-with-quick-adb-pusher/
Got it to work with Ghost Commander. There's an option to remount files as ro/rw.
Works great. Thanks for your help!
That bootanimation is screwed up - it's not zip, files are stored. It took me a while to figure it out.
