hi,
i'm having problems with google maps latitude not updating in the background. i'm supposed to be able to have my google maps location updated automatically in the background by cell id location detection.
apparently some phones are unable to do this :
"Windows Mobile phones that do not support cell ID (cell tower) location detection because of a manufacturer limitation in allowing the proper API will not be able to use Latitude to update location automatically in the background. This is a limitation of certain Windows Mobile phones that cannot be worked around currently."
does anyone know if the x1 supports cell ID location detection ?
thanks in advance
The google maps cell id location (not with latitude) works for me. It gives me my (general, about a radius of 300 yards) location even with the GPS turned off.
thanks for the reply !
do you use latitude and does it auto-update ?
cheers !
It does .. if you have GM on, it updates about once per minute, via GSM or GPS. If you turn them off with Latitude on, it will ask you if you want to detect the position even with GM off. If you say yes, GM will silently start-up every 20 minutes, detect to position via GSM, and then update the position in Latitude. It works even with phone in stand-by (screen turned off).
i have just re-downloaded the latest version of maps and it hasn't updated in over an hour despite the fact that i have latitude updates switched on.
any ideas ?
still no update in 12 hours !
Strange .. you can use FdcSoft TaskManager to display notifications queue. You should see GoogleMaps waiting there for next 20 minutes. It works for me but I used it only two days or so. I will test it some more.
It seems the refresh is only done when data connection is active. It does not initiate one. Also WIFI is by default off on X1 while standby (GPRS is not).
But it works rather reliably it seems.
hmmm, still no update for me in 18 hours. my data connection has been on for a couple of hours during that time.
any ideas ?
what should i be looking for in my notifications queue ?
cheers !
The process is GoogleMaps\googlemapsrunat.exe and it should be on top. Hard to miss, really.
Btw. you have latitude working when GM is on, right ?
hi,
yeah, latitude works just fine when i'm actually in google maps but as soon as i close the app, my location is no longer updated.
i don't have that process in my list - i assume it's there all the time and is run every 20 minutes or so ?
when i have google maps open, choose Latitude and the click the Privacy tab, i have "Detect your location" selected. is there anything else that i need to do ?
thanks again !
Not sure if we understand eachother .. it should not be in the process list .. it is in 'notifications' list. There is queue of all tasks scheduled for some time or event. Fdc Task manager can display the queue, just select it from the combo.
There you should see it waiting.
Are you asked if you want to detect location when exiting GM ?
ok, that makes more sense.
it's not there either and i'm not prompted when exit google maps ...
:-(
My version is 3.2.1 (#35).
Btw. I have just found .. you must exit the maps with 'exit' command in menu. Closing it with X won't ask the question.
genius !
ok, i now have the notification so hopefully my updates will work from now on ...
thanks for all your assistance.
have just checked and it auto-updates after an hour. not ideal but better than nothing !
thanks again.

Hi,
Don't know if anyone else is experiancing this but i have activesync push email active and set to "as items arrive" and my peak times set up. When the end of day peak time comes round the mail stops syncing which is by design and cool but the 3G/GPRS data conection stays active (small icon on the signal bars). I have searched around but found nothing, basically i want to schedule the data connection to disconnect at the end of the day, and actually kill the open 3G connection...
Any ideas...?
I've looked at a few bits of software but currently it seems that all thats on offer is disconnect after x mins of inactivity or just disconnect after x mins, this is not really what im after and also these settings kills the similtanious voice and data connection which i don't want either....
If not i may look at writing this myself....
Try commgr pro @ www.commmgrpro.com. It's a fantastic program.
RK
thanks for the suggestion, had another look around and this one is far the best and does exactly what i want it to do: (active sync been running allday/as items arrive via push email) stopping as per schedule in AS at 18:30 then at 18:35 kill/disconnect the gprs connection using this software via the device - #disconnect command, sweet

Hi _DrG_,
I totally agree with you about skschema . Its a great software that do just what i want, that is save my battery for example the night by deactivate the GSM (3G for Pushmail too).
Just a question: how do you deactivate only DataConnection but not GSM? Do you succeed in doing that? OR do you deactivate GSM so pushamil doesn't work ?
Thanks for your answer.
I'd use the reg file in this post I created earlier

Some of the more popular Profile Switchers ... like Phone Weaver (and probably PhoneAlarm) can do this.
For example I have a Night profile that turns on at 11:30pm that mutes the alert volume, lowers the phone ringer, dims the screen, and shuts off Push Mail.
At 5:30am the Day profile kicks in and turns everything back on.
From a communications standpoint PhoneWeaver can control Wifi, Bluetooth, Phone Radio, Push email, Default Internet Connection, and the cellular data connection.
check it out.
I also use PhoneWeaver to do this - great little app which also puts my phone onto vibrate during meetings etc.
Media Net Disconnect Program
Hello, I found these two programs to manually connect and disconnect from your network. I love the DataConnector program because it only requires you to launch the program and it takes care of the rest. The DataDisconnect, on the other hand, requires you to launch the program, select the network you want to disconnect, then press disconnect. I am using WisbarAdvanceDesktop2 and would like to be able to write a script that will launch dataconnector, update the weather (or whatever else), and then launch datadisconnect. I am hoping that someone here knows of a hands-off program that only requires the single tap of the execution file to disconnect from the network, or who could hack the datadisconnect program and make it hands-off.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
khoury4

Hi,
maby an app i use it's exactly what you are looking for. With this app you can schedule everything about your connection: it allows you at what time your mobile data/wifi/flight mode must be turned on/off.
The name of the app is connection commander
Hope this help
I have a rooted SGS, but with the official ROM 2.2 (unfortunately, until the EUR 2.3.3 official rolls out for my area. I always had extremely slow GPS locks, even worse compared to the Magic and ZTE Blade I had. I had never modified the NTP server, but anyway this affects fix time only if you are connected to the internet.
2 days my GPS went off. Specifically, launching an application such as igo does makes the satellite icon in the status bar flash, indicating that it tries acquire a GPS fix. And then the icon ... disappears! First time I see something like that. Closing and reopening a navigation application, the icon now does not appear at all, as if GPS is totally disabled. But the application does not complain about lack of GPS functionality!
The only way to make the GPS icon to appear is to reboot and restart a GPS-using application. Then the icon disappears again. This happens with Google Maps, iGo, Navigon.
Running GPS Status is a bit different. In this case, the GPS icon remains flashing as long as the application remains active. But no fix whatsoever is achieved... I have tried to Reset A-GPS data and download new data into it. Nothing.
Relating what can be changed on the mobile, I remembered that just upgraded the version of google maps sometime a few days ago and I enabled caching to be able to off-line browse maps. Thinking that this could somehow be the culprit, I disabled offline browsing and rebooted again. Problem persists. Even tried changing the SUPL server, as mentioned in http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/...air-and-froyo/
Any ideas on what might be wrong here. The phone is in perfect condition, no crashes, NOTHING! It is within the guarantee period, but I'd hate returning it. Any info will be appreciated.
Phone firmware is given in my signature. This phone is, and has been, running official 2.2 out of the box. No custom firmwares on it ever.
It was that damned Google Maps update after all! I stumbled into this: http://www.google.ru/support/forum/p/Google+Mobile/thread?tid=53e25a0d053f4eeb&hl=en
Uninstalled (the updates over the stock) Google Maps and presto: locked just fine!
Case solved
I have a Razr i on Orange UK, and have found that apps that use the network/cell location (instead of Wifi or GPS) don't work. I've tested this with various apps, but the problem can be seen with Google Maps:
- Disable GPS and Wifi in settings
- Tap location crosshairs and wait
- A 'waiting for location' message will appear, followed a few seconds later by 'your current location is temporarily unavailable'
I'm not sure if this is an issue with my provider (Orange) or with the phone itself. Can anyone else reproduce this issue?
I have the same issue here in Brazil with my provider (Claro).
My other 2 phones can find the location using the network, with a precision of about 1km, but RAZR i doesn't even "try" to find it. I receive the same message as you using Maps. One of that other 2 phones is a Motorola Spice XT300 (using Android 2.1 at the same provider), so this issue may be especific for this device or for the newest versions of Android.
I would like to use the location based on the network to activate wifi and other tasks with the SmartActions (without GPS, wifi and bluetooth to save battery), if somebody knows a way to make this work, I would be very thankful too.
I can try this later today on my father's Galaxy SII (using ICS too), and will post here the result if anyone doesn't post it before me.
EDIT: I tested it again, and it works! Maps could find my location with a good precision (better than 100m) only using the 3G network. By the way, the SII can do this too. I don't know why it works now, but maybe with a 2G network the device can't find the location.
I found a fix for a similar sounding issue here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9576852&postcount=108 However that fix requires root access which I'm not currently willing to try on my new Razr i.
After reading that link, I did manage to fix it for now by going to Settings > Apps > All > Google Services Framework and pressing the Clear Data button. I was prompted again to enabled Location Services. I then rebooted my phone. After a reboot the Play Store didn't work at first, but it sorted itself out after a few minutes.
I'll say that this is fixed 'for now'... some other threads discussing similar problems show that such fixes sometimes stop working after a period of time.
Hi,
I've tried Android Auto (AA) in my car with the following problem:
Installed AA via apkmirror.com (Google does not oficially support AA in Czech Republic yet). I've tried packages for arm and arm64 architecture (same results).
Connected to car via USB.
AA started, displayed on my car's display, working.
Started Waze - my current location correctly set and displayed.
After starting driving my location didn't change at all.
Steps 4 - 5 are the same for Google Maps.
Both Google Maps and Waze are working correctly when run normally on my phone.
Car: Skoda Octavia 5E (2016), does offically support AA
Phone: Xiaomi Redmi 4X (Android 6.0.1, MIUI Global 8.5.2.0)
Please, what could be wrong?
Anything I could try to make the navigation work?
Thanks a lot for any advice.
I'm having the same problem as you do. The only one working in my AA is Google Maps. Waze not working correctly in AA. Stay still in one point for all the time and the navigation didn't work.
Haven't tried the waze on the phone yet.
Xiaomi Redmi 4X (Android 6.0.1, MIUI Global 8.5.2.0)
Zafira MY 2017 + intellilink 4.0
Same here. But I've noticed one thing. The same version of Android Auto and Waze works on my old Asus Zenfone 2. I upgraded to Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 this week and everythinkg works fine except Waze. It starts up, I can set my destination, but my location on map is the last position from mobile mode. When I switch to AA mode it do not use GPS somehow (or its blocked).
I suspect this is caused by either bug in Xiaomi or its setup. So I started playing with power saving features (turning them off) and I'll see if it helps.
FIXED!!!
it seems like MIUI was causing the issue. In the Settings, there is battery saving setup which can disable access to GPS if screen is off. So I disabled all the stuff and Waze works as it should.

Thanks!
This I've tried as well. I've set Custom behavior for AA to "No restriction" but with no avail. Maybe another service? Didn't find any obviously named such as Location service or so...
I'll try disabling power saver at all to confirm your observation soon!
Fix confirmed
Great!
Disabling power saver completely solved the issue.
But, I wanted to have the power saver on. So I experimented a little and the (working) result is:
Under Battery & performance -> Manage apps battery usage -> Choose apps set no restriction to applications:
Android Auto
Waze
I also added Google Play services for Instant Apps and Google Services Framework (System apps tab) to this list but I'm not sure if this matters.
what version android?

I'm also running into this issue with only waze on AA. Waze works fine by itself, and GM works fine both. I was unable to find where I could set the battery restrictions. This is also a new problem for me as it was working (same car) but on an older phone. Issue appears to be on the new (samsung s8+) only. Submitted issue to waze, but if someone here has a solution before they get back to me, that would be great!
Thanks so much everyone I turned off battery save on my Galaxy S-8+ and all is working again.
Hi all,
I'm extensive user of GPS: I use GPS navigation in my car and on hikes, therefore I have couple of GPS trackers installed in my system beside the Google Map.
I recently found that Google Map or some of other apps does not run properly (I'm sure, it was not like that before). I hiked yesterday and I noticed that
a) The app to show the status of GPS (GPS Status, I installed it recently for debugging purposes) shows 40+ satellites and provides correct geolocation.
b) Google Map - shows wrong location, 4 miles away (I guess it it a location of cell tower, i.e it only grabs data from A-GPS)
c) AllTrails PRO says "waiting for GPS"
d) Another GPS tracker for hikers (GeoTracker) shows correct location and works properly.
Google Map and AllTrails finally found GPS but it takes ~20-30 minutes to do that. The Smartphone is 3 months old and I used Google Map + AllTrails + GeoTracker from the beginning without
any problems. I started getting the "waiting for GPS" message couple weeks ago. Roughly at the same time I noticed that Google Map can not can not provide me a route from woods to home.
I see that 2 out of 4 apps work properly, but 2 most important ones are unable to connect to GPS immediately. Finally they establish a connection to GPS, but it takes enormous amount of time..
Is it a problem with hardware or software? Is any 3rd part app to see what is going on with the GPS?
What has been done already:
1. Power saver is disabled for all apps
2. Made sure that location permission is enabled.
3. GPS reception is good.
