Porting application from Hero --> to Cyanogen - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys!
Is possible to install the HTC's applications from a rom Hero to a Cyanogen?
I'm interesting to application "People" and "Phone"
I've asked in an italian android's forum (www.androidiani.com) and they says that maybe is possible, but there are many problems with dependencies...
What do you think about this?
Thanks in advance!

The hero apps are closely tied to HTC's closed source framework, and as such not easy or practical to port. Also, I hear Q&A loves to answer questions just like this one

it's hard. Talk to stericson (twitter.com/stericson)
he's the one who ported htcmusic to cyanogen. but it's hard, and was simply lucky that htcmusic was as simple as it was.
so, no. very unlikely.
I suggest, if you're into the hero apps but want a stock-like look&feel, go for haykuro 6.0r1. its ancient, but at least has that dialer.
oh, and for future ref., q&a is a more friendly section for these kinds of things.

Yeah. Q&A is the best place to ask this.
Anyway, seeing as if you've asked. It would be possible, if Cyanogen was going to put the HTC Framework in his ROM. Unfortunately, he's already said he isn't putting it all in, so you'd have to do a really large amount of work to get it to work.
In my opinion, I don't see why you would want to, really...

This has been asked many times. It will never happen unless the HTC framework is used. (If you use the HTC framework, then you end up with a Hero ROM.)
Thread moved to Q&A and closed.

Is there a list of 'official' roms?

I was wondering if there is a list somewhere of "official" roms. By that, I mean manufacturer created. We have the usual Android that is made by Google and also the HTC Hero rom, but there are others on the way (like the moto blur and whatever SE have in the works) and I would like to see what I can do with them, which parts can be used in custom roms and just generally have a tinker.
I know there are lists of the custom roms around, but is there something like that for manufacturer roms?
Dev phone 1http://www.htc.com/www/support/android/adp.html#s3
Google I/O Device (Ion)http://www.htc.com/www/support/andro...io-device.html
Here's two.
There's a question mark in the thread title, so I can see why Q&A would be a highly inappropriate place for this thread
Testing has listed the ION/ADP1 ROM links, Rogers HTC Dream ROMs do have to be ported to the T-mobile G1, so there's no point in finding links for the original ROM. I don't believe any MotoBlur ROMS *shudder* have been released.
Ah my apologies, I sometimes forget the other sections exist since I spend all of my time in the this part.
Thanks for the links. Well your shudder at the moto blur rom is kind of my point. There's bound to be some parts of it which are nice and can be put to use in other roms, which is why I'm looking for a list of the manufacturer roms. I'm kind of hoping if Android gets ported to platforms other than mobiles we will start to see features that can be used on our phones which expand on the standard smartphone features. That's when Android will really start to take down the iPhone.

Complaint Section - NO SWEARING!!

I locked the thread because of the language, not for the complaints.
Let me say that this has been done because every theme can be run on any rooted phone. Since this is the case then themes need to be moved to the "general" theme section since they can be put on any device.
........
I don't mind the complaints, but the language in which yall choose to voice yourselves is not acceptable.

Ill go first:
I Hate the way android and windows mobile combine!
I hate the new move!
It was dumb because the original one was fine! and i was on it since the beginning!
now i gotta add more bookmarks where as all i had before was one for it all:
Dream - That was all i needed... it seems to clutter my part up now and that stinks! lol
Complaint away!!! lol
Well like I said, there was no point in keeping all the themes seperate when they, so far, work on any device.
As for having a hard time finding them, you just need to have your theme dev label his thread correctly to help you sort through them.
People always hate change, no surprise

my dear bro. i tried 10 themes from dream and sapphire and not a single of them run in my european hero. i had to do nandroid restore in every case.
Like I said, youd have to be running those roms
but your phone is capable of running them. If your running a hero rom, then look for the themes marked Hero.
If your running cm rom, look for any g1/mytouch theme....
Stericson
in that case i will have to look for hero rom as i have hero and in here i see 100 of themes in them only 10 for hero. dont u think this is difficult to search for these?
and if there is a quation of rom compatibility then how come u r saying every theme will run in every phone?
and 1 more thing... its not that i will leave this forum if u keep theme section like this but the thing is that maximum users are complaining this new system. this forum is for the users and if max users complain about this then whats the point of keeping it?
cheers man.
A phone is strictly a piece of hardware, and any rooted phone, with the appropriate rom(software) loaded, can run any of these themes.
And yes there are only about 10 hero roms, there are not many of them.
And no I dont find it difficult, as I've looked on the first two pages and found them, clearly marked with "Hero"
Stericson
Stericson, I completely see your point about the merging of the theme areas. I have a MyTouch and browsed the Dream Theme area regularly (and almost never visited the Magic Theme area). While this does lead to a certain bit of confusion by putting everything in the same area (just as the Magic 32a/b rom differentiation gets confusing). Would it be possible that when a dev posts their rom, have all of the rom details in the first post, and all of the supported themes in the 2nd post? Granted, this would probably cause alot of work on everybody's part, but it would make our whole environment better as everything corresponding to a rom would be in a single place.
Now, I know what you're thinking. With this, we'd have to worry about the clutter in the Dev forums; however, what about breaking up the Dev forum to have it be strictly a place for Dev's to work and brainstorm, then setup a seperate area strictly for releases/contributions. I don't know, just an idea.
Ps. For an example of the 1st post Rom, 2nd post Themes, check this out by Enomther. A couple people got posts in between his, but you get the idea.

Sorry but this statement is simply not true. A theme designed for the same hero rom running on both the dream and hero will NOT run on both. A good example is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=572151 I also think its very clear that the mass majority of htc "android" users are against this move, whats more is that a simply poll on each android themes section would of made this clear and could of avoided the trouble we android users now face.
Oh and I DO understand that clearly labelled post could avoid any problems but that fact remains that most if not all themes moved are not labelled with there device name included.
I make Themes for Hero. I don't think they work on any other device.
For every ROM you must change anything/many things.
No, guys, so I didn't want to use this section to release my themes.
It's hard work.
In the forum "HTC Hero THEMES and Apps" there must be this themes placed...
Give me one of the themes in this new section, that works on an Hero!
Thats completely.....ouhhh!
If I can spell english so good as german I could better explain, what I mean.
Putting all the themes for "Android" was a bad idea. Plain and simple.

Your argument would hold if there was a Cyanogen ROM that COULD be used on the Hero, which there isn't.
I don't know who's bright idea it was to put all the android themes together, but it did not help in any way, no matter how much you argue.

Well consider the fact that not every (and probably no) developer is going to have every Android device and therefor cant test and verify that their theme runs on whatever device. Even if they are all running the same rom you are asking us to assume that they will work for any device with a compatible rom. I dont think that will be the case honestly. But either way, it still begs the case of organization. It would still be more organized to have sub-forums for things like themes on a device to device basis and if the dev finds that their theme works for different devices and chooses to add a thread under another devices themes forum that should be their choice.
There is a reason that personal computers group system sounds in a system folder and give you the option to store your music in a different place. Its more organized!
Well putting all the android thems to gether has just made it a huge mess ...
Instead of having a nice overview i need to go search for themes and i will miss new themes this way
Place restore the android theme sections as they where so a seperate theme section for every device.
anyone else notice the contradictions that happened when stericson talks???
HAHA
you are in a battle with your own statements, which in my opinion... do not make sense when put together cause they say 2 different things lol
If I have to add another bookmark its no big deal. The g1 theme section is a mess either way because of all the different builds out for the g1. I was gonna suggest that they make submenu's for different builds such as cyanogen, dwang, hero etc. Either way its no biggie to me.
Said it before say it again.. Went from working and clean to cluttered and not working so well. Dont know why they wont change it back as I have not seen anyone who likes it better this way. Thought the whole reason for a fourm is to see what the people like and want.... well its pretty clear what we all want we want it to be the way it was. it was working just fine...

So let me get this right..... the old dream theme section was a mess and could of benefited from splitting into even more sub sections but now that 3 different devices theme section have been merged to make a bigger mess.... its no biggie?!

[FAQ] Answers for Noobs who like to ask questions. READ THIS BEFORE ASKING ANYTHING.

Ok. I don't know if this will get stickied or not, I hope it will. Mods can feel free to change the title of the post if need be. Here's a stab at answering a few questions which are asked repeatedly.
First and foremost:
CLICK THE SEARCH BUTTON BEFORE ASKING ANYTHING WHATSOEVER.
Secondly:
IF YOU HAVE ROOTED YOUR PHONE, MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING ELSE...THEN SAVE A COPY OF IT TO YOUR DESKTOP
Don't even bother asking for help if you've screwed up a ROM install and don't have a backup. The only advice you'll get is to use the RUU (which can be found here).
Having gotten that out of the way here are some of the typical questions and answers.
#1. What's the fastest/best/most interesting/etc ROM out there.
Answer: Try them all and see. If you read the first page of each ROM thread the bugs/fixes are posted. If you see a thread without the bugs/fixes, READ THE THREAD FOR THAT ROM AND ASK YOUR QUESTIONS IN IT. Do not create a new thread to ask questions like: Does everything work in <INSERT ROMNAME HERE> rom?
#2. How do I...?
Answer: The answer to your question is probably http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=CDMA%20Hero%20Guides. If it's not there, it's almost definitely under search. Stop asking. Stop creating new threads. It just makes people mad and clutters up the forums.
#3. I think I bricked/broke/messed up my phone
Answer: Did you flash a GSM radio on top of a CDMA phone (or vice versa)? Then probably not. Pull your battery, restore from the NANDROID BACKUP I'm certain you made when you first rooted your phone and try again. Almost all bad ROM flashes can be fixed by wiping and reinstalling your ROM. Check your battery level. Never flash a ROM if the level is below 30%.
#4. I'm getting an error after using the RUU (110, etc)
Answer: Check the wiki guides above. There is a thread which tells you how to recover. If you are too lazy to read through the fixes, here is the thread.
#5. The Sprint 2.x upgrade is coming soon! I have pr00f!
Answer: No, you don't. Stop posting new threads to draw attention to yourself. The ROM upgrade will be out when it's out and not before Sprint is ready to release. Any release date you might have heard is tentative at best and flat out wrong in most cases. Stop creating threads about it, we don't care where you got your information.
#6. Audio doesn't work in my custom 2.x ROM
Answer: Try here. There are two fixes in this thread for it.
#7. I just flashed <INSERT ROMNAME HERE> ROM and everything's all screwed up.
Answer: Wipe everything and start over. In your nandroid recovery, select 'Wipe Data/Factory Reset'. When that's done wipe 'Dalvik-Cache'. Then when that's done (if you have installed a2sd (apps2sd)) wipe SD:EXT. Then reflash the ROM. 9 times out of 10 this will fix it. The 10th time, ask in the ROM thread, do NOT create a new thread for your issue.
#8. My battery life sucks. Or: What's the battery life on this ROM?
Answer:
Search. There are a lot of threads about battery life already. If your answer's not there, ask in the ROM thread (after searching that thread of course).
Android Terms:
a2sd/apps2sd: The process of moving user installed applications from internal storage to the SD card
Rosie: Typically used as a term describing certain graphical characteristics of the Android operating system, primarily the 'bottom bar' of the phone. Example: Stock Rosie is curved, espresso Rosie is not, with rounded edges.
Also:
"For the record, with 2.1 we CAN NOT just alter the rosie launcher or the taskbar or the HTC lockbar. The files are all tied up together. This means that, if you have installed someones taskbar mods, and then later you decide you want a different rosie, when you flash the new rosie it WILL undo some of the taskbar mods....UNLESS you have a themer do a custom just for you and provide them a link to the taskbar that you are using. I cannot stress the part about providing them a link enough. That is just common courtesy. There are plenty of folks out here willing to help you. Many will even help you learn to do it yourself. Just ask nice and be patient. This is a hobby for us, too, and we often have our own projects that we are working on." - tejasrichard
There is a way to do both, however:
"And a little correction about changing only the rosie or taskbar, you can if you use metamorph [/QUOTE]
You can find metamorph in the Android Market." -danaff37
JIT: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dalvik_virtual_machine Also see the following URL: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Just-in-time_compilation.
LWP: Live Wallpapers. Animated wallpapers that run on your home screen. Until recently, not available in the HTC Sense UI.
MNS: Mobile Network Sharing. The act of using your cell phone as a USB or WIFI connected internet router. Example: Connecting your desktop/latop to the internet via your cell phone's mobile internet.
AOSP: Android Open Source Project http://source.android.com/
PRI: Profile of your phone. Used by your carrier to set up your network/internet settings.
PRL: Preferred Roaming List. List of cell towers close to your present location. This allows the phone to roam more easily since it has a built-in database of towers, rather than having to search for one.
This is getting too long, so I'm going to summarize:
No one likes reading the same questions over and over. If you can't be bothered to at least search for the answers, do us all a favor and don't say anything.
Stop saying things like 'I didn't feel like reading 300 pages of <INSERT ROMNAME HERE>'s thread. How do I?'...USE THE SEARCH FUNCTION TO SEARCH THAT THREAD.
If you don't read the guides, and instruction posts, then screw up your phone, don't whine about it. It's your own fault. It's not the fault of the ROM dev, or the ROM, or anything else. It's YOUR FAULT. Accept responsibility.
Did someone at the Sprint Store piss you off by not accepting your water damaged phone for replacement? Are you mad because they gave you a refurb instead of a brand new phone? We don't care. This is a DEVELOPMENT FORUM. It's for development of roms/themes/etc and discussions of roms/themes/etc. It's not a place to whine that you're being treated badly by Sprint. Post about it on Sprint's forums.
I think that covers the basics. If you're new here, do us all a favor and read this post, follow what's inside it. If you're not new and are a chronic whiner, read this post, follow what's inside it. Just stop cluttering the forums and making it impossible to find any information in it at all.

What terms specifically? I'll add them to the OP.
Edit: Added the two you listed.
Nothing specifically, at this very moment but, I come across new ones all the time when reading different posts. If it's cool, I'll just keep posting them here as I come to them and, if you think they should be in the op you can add them there or, if not, maybe just reply back down in the thread.
BTW. I know that I can google most terms and find them, and I have no problem whatsoever doing that, it's just nice when someone coming here to learn can expedite the process a lil with the help of some of the seniors.

where's the sense Rom?

I've never posted but I can't figure this out. I searched Google but the only sense roms I found were from February. In xda-nexus-development there are a bunch of themes stock roms, but I don't see any full sense roms. I remember when I had the g1 and the sense roms were slow but everything except Bluetooth worked. I'm sure by now there's a Rom that pretty much makes my nexus into a desire, I really want to try out full sense. But I can't find one anywhere. I know the question sounds dumb but ive seriously looked, I even downloaded Rom manager and looked through its lost. I know it exists because it existed for the g1 and the nexus blows the g1 away. Sorry, I need help.
I call bull**** that you've searched.
As of right now, the sense rom thread is holding a very prominent position in its respective forum.
Not all that helpful, but here's a few tips ronjeremy. Use the advanced search, you can narrow your search out with it (choose only the forum sections you need). Second, look in the development section, you usually find all roms there.
For instance, for Nexus One try here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=559
Why don't people use the search bar? It takes even longer to wait for people to respond than to just "search" the damned thing.

can you link me to "the sense rom thread"? I believe you that it exists, but it must not have the word in the title because when i searched on google, i found "sense" roms that were very old, when i searched this forum there was 1 thread with the word "sense" in it, none with the word "desire". No Bull****. So I dont know what to tell you, maybe i should look in every rom post and if there arent screen pics maybe i should flash every rom? Because its definitely a lot faster to post a question than open every single rom thread.

Not gonna link you to it, you'll never learn how to search. I'm glad others aren't spoon feeding it to you either.
Just head into the right forum, hit CONTROL+F and search for "sense" or "desire." Even without searching, I can see TWO sense rom threads within the first page of the appropriate forum.
And when you search in the forum, just search for titles only and just search for "sense" or "desire" in the right forum.
@erikikaz you are too cool
dont know why you would even want sense (unless you absolutely need the htc facebook app or the FM radio)... sense was great about 2 years ago
vanilla froyo + adw/qd, etc have far surpassed the sense UI
I'm using CM 6 with black notification bar, imported sense live wallpaper and launcher pro plus (which is adding sense-like widgets constantly), and the weather and clock widget and I get a sense-like experience without the graphical glitches and Rom bugs. Yeah I paid for some of it, but supporting developers is never a bad thing and once purchased the app is mine across any Rom I install. Unlike sense.

You have no friends. Is this supposed to be some sort of lessen that you are blessing me with? Because I think you're a douche bag getting some sort of loser-jollies from withholding a link to an internet thread, its sad. But its also funny, but I'm sure you're no stranger to people laughing at you. So what are you fat? Got a lazy eye? Maybe your boyfriend told you that your peckers tiny? Get over yourself, I did search, I'm not allowed to post links, but believe me I'd post the link for you. Now I'm on my nexus one, when I press "search forum" the search box appears and disappears so what next? Maybe you could hit me with another one of your life-changing, eye-opening, "this hurts me more than it hurts you" queer lessens? i see one by "evil" which isnt right, i see one in a guide by paul which is 2.1, is that as new as it gets? no flash on sense on nexus one?
well. i think the closest rom you'll find is the MCR, Modaco Custom Rom. i waited for those rom too, but idk why, it seems the development was canceled. i don't know for sure. try to look for MCR in android development.
In fact there was/is no completed Sense Froyo port until now.
evil's NXSense ROM is almost complete now (besides USB mount notification and some small BT quirks).
There's Alpha of kingclick's Desire Froyo port (not on the forum).
Look them up, flash, compare, see what you like.
thanks for the replies, i tried modaco it was pretty great, but i instantly missed flash and wifi hotspot setting. But the rom was really smooth, if a froyo one pops up im in. Is the evil one you are talking about going to be themed like his current one or will it be the way it is supposed to be?
Oh no, you've hurt my feelings. It's just terribly unfortunate that none of your descriptions fit me. I've tutored many kids like yourself. You try to teach them through the Socratic method and all they do is reverse their inability or unwillingness to work through a problem on you, blaming you for their failures. Nothing new.

So tell me, did control+F work for you or not? And if it didn't, did you heed my advice and actually just head over to those forums to look at the first page of posts? If so, you're welcome.

Now I'm on my nexus one, when I press "search forum" the search box appears and disappears so what next? Maybe you could hit me with another one of your life-changing, eye-opening, "this hurts me more than it hurts you" queer lessens?

Don't be so easy, sheesh. Here comes a lesson, ready?. Try using the search bar at the top of the page. Guess what? When you click it, it won't disappear! And I already told you to search under titles only. Hopefully all this information isn't already over your head.

Complain much? You asked for sense roms and you got them. And if you actually did some more prodding you'd find that modaco actually has a 2.2...ahh, screw it, find it yourself

thanks for the replies, i tried modaco it was pretty great, but i instantly missed flash and wifi hotspot setting. But the rom was really smooth, if a froyo one pops up im in. Is the evil one you are talking about going to be themed like his current one or will it be the way it is supposed to be?

It's themed the same as his previous ROMs, but there are themes that you can flash over it to get the original sense ui theme. I believe the theme is even posted in evil's thread.
I've been running evil's Q&D NXSense v.1.04 rom since it was posted and so far it seems really complete (besides BT issues and no FM radio - which I never use anyway).

Looking for tips on cooking my own ROM

Hi,
I just got my XT860, the GSM version of DROID 3. I have tried some ICS roms like CM9, AOKP and even the new KEXEC one. Sadly for me none of them have support for video camera... the hardware codec drivers are missing, and that's a show stopper for me.
So I'm sticking with the official gingerbread ROM but I want to customize it a little so I feel more confortable with it.
I need guidance on how to deodex/zipalign it so I can remove all of motorola's bloatware and change some things like the launcher to the one I like, I also want to change the loading screen to a customized one, change the phone's theme (I *need* those xperia arc icons badly, theyre just gorgeous!). Oh, I also would love to know how to make the rom be compatible with hashofcode's safestrap.
I searched trough many topics on those subjects but I didn't find much information so any help is apreciated. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for taking your time to help me.
I have read the first topic u linked before posting, but it says thats for HTC devices and information on adding support for other devices is either really vague or i`m too dumb to understand. Propbably the latter.
I honestly have no idea.
Are you fluent in any coding languages? If you don't know anything then making a rom is pretty far away.

That and google. Apks arent usually manufacturer dependant, though it depends on the app. Instructions can always be followed and tweaked, you dont have to s-off etc... Google will help you though or you could just rip them out of a pre-existing rom and repackage.
