Hi i have a htc dream and rooted/flashed it to tmobile g1 with a hero rom. Now i'm selling the phone and would like to revert it back to my default rom as in how it was when i brought the phone.
how should i do about it?
Thanks!
I am guessing sense you have a hero rom you have Haykuro's spl, if you need to revert back to the orginal rom just go over to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=592662 , jonzina has the step's to follow, just follow to the T and you will be fine.
there is also a walkthrough at www.cyanogenmod.com in the wiki
pretty simple process. flash the rc29 dream.nbh and wait for an OTA update to get you up to date pretty much. just follow the steps in the wiki.
the problem is, mine is a singtel set, its not a t-mobile g1, its a htc dream though now it becomes g1 after rooting and rom. i want to revert back to before. can i still use the dream.nbh?
Just a heads up, if you have the 1.33.2005 SPL required for Hero ROMs and you use DREAIMG.NHB to downgrade, you will brick.
To avoid that:
1) Wipe then flash a ROM that does *not* require 1.33.2005, (eg Cyanogen Mod)
2) Flash the stock SPL as update.zip
i'm so confused now =/
edit:how do i check spl ver?
With the phone powered off, press and hold the camera button and power, which will bring you into bootloader mode...if you were running a hero rom, you should have 3 androids on skateboards at the bottom of the screen (1.33.2005 SPL)...if so, do what AdrianK said
ok! but i still can use the DREAIMG.NHB from t-mobile? as mine is the not the t-mobile set, mine is a singtel htc dream. able to use the same method?
Some people WANT custom roms on their phone and are scared to do it themselves. Im recommending Cyanogens rom because its so fast and stable. If I were you I would post it as is, that way it stands out from the 100+ other G1 sellers.
If you don't see the response you were looking for just update it and reinstall the stock one.... just my 2 cents.
haha..how you know i'm selling.. you are right maybe i should try what you suggested. anyway how do i change roms? my current hero rom is the my one and only one.. likey to be out dated and laggy. last time follow guide to root and flash, what about updating? just dl rom and flash? haha

This kinda gave it away.. lol. I also had a hero rom and hated it because it was soooo slow. Just follow the directions here and it will boot up and work 100%

Might wanna use 4.2.5. ROM at the moment though, users have been posting issues on the newest version, go here: http://www.cyanogenmod.com/download/rom/update-cm-4.2.5-signed.zip
wahahaha..so sorry.. didn't remember i mention before..ahahaha.. ok ok thanks! yeah my hero rom is abit laggy how bout those released now? any idea how to revert back to my singtel htc dream rom incase they prefer it that way?
thanks for your advise! sold my phone with cyanogen
Nice!!! Im glad I was able to help... get another G1 or other android phone.

First of all forgive me if this question as been asked a million times but to be honest I'm finding the Dream section a mess.
Now onto my question.... I've rooted my G1 and I'm currently running JF 1.51 with hero skin, now I'm I correct that I will always be rooted as long as I stick to custom roms?
The other thing is when I go into recovery mode I get a message at the top of the screen something like "Unable to find /system/command/recovery.cmd" am I correct that means I'm unable to proform backups? which is no big deal for me.
Finally whats the deal with this new spl, do I really need it to run a hero ported rom? I only ask because in all my years flashing windows phones the spl is something you should flash once and leave alone to avoid errors that can brick your phone.
Yes you will always be rooted. Not really sure on the recovery thing...You might want to try to fix that by flashing another recovery image. Yes you need the new spl to run the hero ROM since its HUGE

Thanks for the fast reply, as for the recovery thing like I said I would never back anything up and restore it anyway (I've always started afresh with every new rom)
Now going back to the spl thing.... Ive already updated my radio to the latest so when I do finally go for a hero rom and do flash my spl is the new spl a custom one which will allow me to reflash back down to a non-hero rom? or do I have to go back to the orginal hardspl first?
The new SPL was released by haykuro and it allows you to have about 30 more mb of space on your system partition. It still allows you to flash non-hero ROMs as well as hero ROMs. Sorry for the slow response >.>
Thanks alritewhadeva everything is clearer now.
Okay got me a new g1 with 1.1 on it. And I want to root. Where do I start?
Btw I had a mytouch 3g yesterday. But hated it so much I just had to have the g1. The keybored is so much better

Yeah I've read that thread so many times. Also I'm on rc33. And something I forgot to put in my post is what is all the up todate stuff. Like spl, radio. You know all that stuff. All the help would be awesome.
I've also watched a ton of videos of how to do this. So I hope I do it right the first time

Then next you need to flash the recovery image from telnet. Then the new radio, a cupcake rom and then an SPL. If you want to try Hero, you'll need Haykuro's SPL (which needs the radio before hand or you'll brick your phone).
Okay. I've heard a lot about doing radio first. And nope for the hero rom. I think it should stay on the hero phone.
But as far as roms. where do I find the cupcake rom?
Also thanks for the help so far. I know some will pop on this thread and tell me to use the search bar. But I like asking the questions myself
Also how do I know what radio and spl go together?
you just want the two newest ones. unless you want the haykuro spl
Yeah I just want the two newest ones. But how do I find out which ones are the newest?
The most I want to do with my g1 is apps2sd. Themes, and tethering
here is a useful list of radio updates with what roms they work on:
http://code.google.com/p/android-roms/wiki/Radio_Update
Where are you up to? You have RC33 and have flashed the recovery image?
You will want this radio. It's the newest one and will work with all cupcake ROMS. Flash that before the cupcake ROM. The ROM is your choice, if you just want a simple ROM then Jesus Freke's 1.51 is just cupcake with root, simple as. Cyanogen's ROM has lots of optimizations and allows for automatic APPS2SD as long as you have an ext3 partition and there are lots of themes for it.
I think he's still unrooted and running RC33.
For the record, some modified Cupcake builds need the Haykuro SPL to work properly (i.e. JACxROM).

thanks rpope904 and Adriank
but right now i just got home. and im getting everything ready before i get to rooting.
and the memory card ext3 ill have to read more about before doing that.
what about spl's?
okay im stuck! i got to the telnet app. and well it wont connect to the server or something. i did all the steps. i dont know why it wont connect
never mind. i got it now. i just had to do a few steps again
Cool It took me a few tries on starting telnetd, I couldn't get the contact search to open pressing enter twice.. But, it finally did, and worked
so what should i do after i get root?
i dont know if i should update to JF 1.4 rc33 first
then update to JF 1.5.
or can i just update to the 1.5 and not do the others?

tell me what to do actually and i will try to show u what u need to download and do first. theres a really good youtube video on how to root by gadgetpro
do u want a cupcake or hero build?
first and foremost you should decide on what ROM you want to use, i think most people now use the Cyanogen ROMs because he is constantky updating and it is pretty fast and there are themes. second you *should* not need but should have the latest radio and the HardSPL there are only a few SPLs, Hard, Stock, Dev/engineering, and Haykuro(stay away unless you know what you are doing. once you have the Hard SPL and the recovery image from JF(i believe the latest is 1.42 or 1.43) then you are great and can flash any update.zip you want. after you decide the ROM you want then you just have to flash it
there is no best rom just like there is no best woman, the best one is the one you like most, so don't ask. READ READ READ READ READ READ READ and SEARCH SEARCH SEARCH SEARCH those are the best nuggets of knowlege i can drop on you right now
Hi to one and al
I hope i am allowed to post a new thread on this. I live in Ireland but have a
G1 which is from the good uld U.S.A. I did a week of reading on how to root my phone and got some great advice on this forum.
I rooted my phone last night, using the 2 part video on Youtube and i followed
every step to the letter, i think its worked because my phone still does haha, but i dont see any benefits if anything i have less.
I did the rooting of the phone and then put the U.K RC8 on to it i its the
jf 1.42 i think. Anyway, thats ok but i didnt know there was a jf cupcake 1.5 out i got the jf updater and its found the jf 1.51 cupcake UK and a jf RC9 v.1.43 UK and also an update.zip
Now i have not downloaded any of these yet, Question... Do i download and apply the proper 1.5 radio from the android site and apply that then download the 1.5 UK cupcake and apply that.
Any help would be appreciated as i dont want to **** it up now cheers

Yes update your radio. Its not a must but highly recommended otherwise you might have some issues. Also I would recommend a different rom cause JF's are to old and boring. I would suggest one of Cyanogens rom's.
thanks for reply, i dont have to downgrade the fone again do i, can you tell me which cyanogen rom i should download and do i need another compatible radio, i am a bit phased about diong this again especially after reading so many bricked fones but i do reaserch and listen so any help would be great
Jf stopped making roms so go with cyan stable 4.04
hey Gridlock hows it going.
ok forgive my ignorance i am looking for this rom and cant find it, also do i have to download a radio for that cyanogen release and apply that first,, also do i wipe the sd card before i start this
hope i havent made things more difficult,
and just one other thing when i did the root of youtube i didnt get an option to "protect my root" as i have read on some other guides.
thanks
edit found a post by nephron will have a read through that, but still need to know about the "protect my root" thing and do i wipe the sdcard?
You don't have to worry about protecting your root, nephron guide is a good way to go, you can pick up any rom and the most up to date in the dev section
I am doing good by the way

You won't have to downgrade again. You should update to the newest radio (26I) if your not already. You can do that before or after loading a new rom it doesn't matter. You can look in the dev section for cyanogen he has a stable and experimental build.
thankyou kindly gents will follow that advice
If you haven't already you need to install Cyan's recovery 1.4

Doesn't matter, flash the ROM or recovery in whatever order you want. ROMs don't require a specific, recovery. Just use the one you want to use, 1.4 has the most features.

right i am ok with that, now i know to flash the radio first do i also have to flash this spl i downloaded its called danger spl (dont like the fookin sound of that!!) this nephron guide is very confusing
sorry lads but this is not happening i put the rom onto sd card home and power and its just coming up with a load of mad writing and like a fingerprint gives me the options but when i choose to install it say it cant install as it cant find the rom on sd card, says directory doesnt exist
i am getting to the stage of unrooting here as i dont want to fcuk my fone up
anyone help, and that nephron guide is just too confusing
As long as you don't plan on flashing any hero roms then you don't need dangerSPL. I don't recommend doing the hero roms or dangerSPL until you have a very good understanding of the cupcake/donut roms first.
sorry i have it, i had the file extensions hidden on my new laptop so the re naming was incorrect, sorted now thanks
Hey everyone, I'm new to this forum. So...Hi
Anyways, I've got a problem with my Rogers Htc Dream. I was trying to root it and was following a guide on youtube. Then i realized rooting for T-Mobile G1s and Rogers HTC Dreams were different. Now i notice when i turn on my phone it shows a T-Mobile screen instead of the regular Rogers loading screen. I guess i installed the T-Mobile firmware on my phone. I checked in settings the current firmware im running is now 1.0. So, i'm wondering if anyone can help me put back on rogers firmware on my phone and also link me to a Rogers HTC dream rooting guide. Thanks in advance.

Okay so, the root worked for you? Everythings alright its just the start up screen that changed?
To get back to stock rogers firmware apply the update from rogers found here:

Then follow this guide to get your phone rooted and install cyanogenmod:

I'm abit scared to follow that guide because there seems to be some ifs about it, like it says avoid anything that writes to the kernel, otherwise you're dead. And it says you require a EBI1, how do I check if I have EBI1
"The Recovery Flasher utility will only work if you're on a version of Android that Rogers/HTC hasn't yet fixed.
If you are at the recovery screen, move on to the next step."
Well how do I know if they haven't fixed it? And if we can't use fastboot to flash images, as Rogers prevents it, then if this procedure goes south we're stuck? I can verify the MD5 of the SPL update ZIP 20 times, but that's not going to guarantee that when I flash it it's not going to brick my phone
edit: I booted with camera and power and it says hboot is 1.33.0009, does this mean I don't have to risk bricking when I root? The tutorial is for 1.33.0010.
I think that it makes it sound a bit worse than it is. I have never tried it but from what I have read if you boot a EBI0 kernel with a EBI1 radio it will just freeze. You will just have to pull out the battery, boot into recovery and then flash a EBI1 kernel on top.
Rogers is bad for releasing updates for their devices. All their Android devices still run cupcake, even the new LG Eve. This is to our advantage because none of the rogers firmwares are fixed. You can give the Recovery Flasher a try because the worst that will happen if you have a fixed rom is nothing.
If you have a 0009 spl you can follow the guide here to update your spl and recovery then start following the guide at Installing HTC System Image. You could also just use the method on the wiki for 0010, I cant see any reason that wouldn't work.
My phone is perfectly fine after the gaining root. So far not much of a difference, except for the virtual keyboard and two more screens and a few more apps and options.

I really want to root so I can install applications to the memory card, and to get 1.6, but I'm really really really scared that it's going to break. I got the phone from ebay, so I'm pretty sure if it breaks I'm out $300 bucks. I'm really at a cross road here!
Ya i was kinda scared the first time too. Then I just bit the bullet and did it. Try to read through the forums as much as you can to learn as much as you can about how your phone works. Also make sure that you understand each step completely and what it is doing to your phone. This is what I did and it made me feel a lot better about the process.
The main risk is flashing the radio and spl once you are done that the chance of bricking is almost none of not none. If you have any questions that you can't find answers to by yourself just ask and me or someone else on the forum will answer them for you.
Yeah, if you're on the Rogers HTC dream, just follow the Rogers heres your real root thread, and all the guides he post. And follow it while filling in the rest with logic.
You'll probably get lost like I did, don't be afraid to ask around.
does anyone know the warranty if it bricks?
Hey everyone, thanks for the help. I went through with the root and everything seems to be working fine. I can make phone calls and everything. I'm running a hero rom. The only thing thats different is it shows a T-Mobile screen instead of Rogers. I don't think thats a big deal, is it?

So...
You want to intentionally go OUT OF YOUR WAY to make it difficult for the buyer to be able to do what they want with it?
LEAVE AN ENGINEERING SPL ON IT!!!!
Install SPL version 1.33.2003 -- this is a full engineering SPL with original partition layout.
Then you head over to developer.htc.com/adp.html and grab the newest ADP1 firmware files. Flash that.
The thing will be root-via-adb and fastboot, so the new user will not have to do any weird hacks to get what he wants from the thing. At the same time, he will have a bone stock ROM on it that functions predictably.
