good find. have you tried it in-call yet? let us know if it works.
I made it so I hope it works! lol
I've been waiting for this! Thank you!
great app, great story
it works just great. this is so cool to see how a good idea is investigated and evolved by the community, then a smart programmer whoops it into an application which is then available worldwide, and in this case even for free (thanks for that!)!

Hello, this is a great idea!
Is it possible if you could auto-disable the app when the light sensor is already reading no light (so it doesn't go into lock mode straight away once about to ring someone at night) and also, why does the screen stay on? That surely will drain battery life. Can't you make it so that the screen turns off when its dark and back on when not?
Thanks
great app. very much needed
This is a really great app, thanks for making it!
The reason the screen stays on is that the light sensor stops reporting light values when the screen is turned off. Maybe this could be worked-around by modifying the Linux kernel but that would surely complicate things..
Anyway, maybe propose this app for inclusion into the next version of MCR?
note: you need to uninstall the version from this forum if you want to install the market version. looks like someone got himself a brandnew set of keys for the market release
Lol yeah lost the old set!

oh man! lol i'm sorry.. i didn't notice the "please post bugs/comments" part in the original post. haha!
my bad
sorry but i don't understand very well the purpose of this apps
by now (without this apps), when i'm using my hero (calling or receiving a call) the screen turns off and i need to use the left phone button if i need the keyboard.
So what does the apps do exactly ?
Thanks
Its locks the screen when you bring the phone against your ear and unlocks it (goes back to normal phone screen) when you move it away.
Only problem I have is that it always locks it in a semi light room, is there a way to change the sensitivty? otherwise its a great app

I agree with the above, It's a great app, however it seems to get enabled in a room with little light, which is a bit annoying. A calibration option would be good?
Also, what is the extra strain on the batter when it's being used i.e. I'm sure it's fine for short phone calls, but when on longer ones does it drain the battery more than when just making a call?
first, the screen should only get locked in a dark room (lol ) when a call is active. if it is triggered by itself then you are running the app in test mode. you do NOT need to start the app manually, it is started when a call is placed or received.
if you want to deactivate it (i.e. for longer calls) just press back during the call. if the screen is not locked at that moment just cover the light sensor with your finger. pressing back disables the app, and after a few seconds the screen will time out as usual and will then be switched off.

Thanks for the advice....
However the app definitely gets activated when using it in semi-light filled spaces. It's not dark just not too light, a slight tweek to only activate it when it's pitch black would be nice!
The problem is with the hardware not the app, sadly HTC put a rubbish sensor in (but at least they put one in at all!)
This means that the sensor reads 0 even in a semi-bright room. You can try things like pointing the sensor (top left, looks like an LED) towards the light source and making sure you shadow isn't covering the sensor.
Not ideal I know but there isn't anything I can do about it!
I am looking to add g-sensor support and perhaps a few other tweaks but that will be version 2.0, got some bugs to iron out first, and a degree to finish lol!
Is there a way to set the brightness of the screen to 0 when the app is active, and set the brightness back to the original setting when inactive?
On the gsm hero yes, because the app works regardless of the autobacklight settings, however on the CDMA version it only works with autobacklight enabled, something I'm trying to get around.
So it might not happen for a while sorry
This is such an useful and awesome app! Its not perfect, but its still a great use of the light sensor!

I ran into a slightly odd issue with my X1: I bought a belt carrying case that has a small magnet on the front to keep the flap closed. Well, it seems like bringing the X1 near this magnet causes the screen orientation to change to landscape and back. This wouldn't be a big deal, except that it does this even if the phone is in sleep mode. The result: I put the phone to sleep, put it in the case, the phone comes out of sleep, and the screen rotates. Worse yet, I get a phone call, am taking the phone out of the case, and the screen rotates again.
I did enable the setting that should allow only the power button to wake the phone from sleep, but it's not helping. Any ideas?
I know from some Nokia devices that the slider wakeup is caused by a small magnet. Without it the screen won't turn on. Figured that out when changing the case of my old N80 ...
So I would guess its the same with the Xperia.
Navigate the registry to HKLM>HARDWARE>DEVICEMAP>KEYBD
Create a DWORD entry call "SlideWakeup" with value 0, then reset your device.
Now, your Xperia stays sleeping

Because a reed-contact (the name of the magnetic activated contact) is proximity and so there is no mechanical wearing

I noticed this the other day when putting it into my old Vario II case...rather annoying actually, but at least now, the phone turns itself on when I take it out of the case!

Thanks for the tip, but it resolves the problem only partially. When I get a phone call, the screen wakes up and the screen rotation dance begins... So, is it possible to turn off the slide-out screen rotation completely?
Thanks,CoolRabbitBlue,
Thats saved my X1 from being thrown at the wall. Was really bugging me, that rotate nonsense.
Excellent tip.
I wanna say I thought I heard somewhere that a maget case can render a device with a slider to not work properly or atleast the slider... Is this true?
whatever a magnet case is but ... if teh magnetfield is to strong it surley can disable the slide / rotate feature of the phone.
The maget case is when you have a case that closes with a magnet. I have seen some cheaper slide out phones get ruined with a strong maget case. I currently have one and it too always switches my screen to landscape. I think if its strong enough to do that then its too strong and can cause damage to your x1.
I think Germetic Contact may be used in phone:

This problem seems to be worse using tf3d. I have been unable to answer calls because by the time the rotation dance has finished the call has gone to voicemail.
no slide wakeup does not help because when a call comes on the device has already woken up.
I think my options are:
get a new case without a magnet.
or
find out how to disable the auto rotate on slide open, maybe if I do this I could assign a hotkey for rotation.
or
dump tf3d and go back to spb shell panel - could always answer phone using dedicated button regardless with this, which leads me to think it might be something to do with dialler/phone interface not tf3d?

Actually they now use a "Hall Effect Switch" which does exactly the same function, but without the moving metal contacts. Hall Effect chips are about the size of the head of the match in your picture!

I've made an app overnight that let's you use normal rotation when keyboard slideout but don changes orientation when you put in/ out your X1 from magnet case!. So whenever call comes in the screen does NOT rotate when you're taking out your phone from your pocket.
As soon as i'll make cab for it, i'll post link here

Thanks for the Registry command, I've been wondering why my screen aways goes landscape when I take it out of the case. At least now it won't always go to landscape mode, only during calls, I guess.
To combat the problem of not being able to answer my phone, I started answering the phone with the call button instead of the softkey. Hasn't failed on me yet.
Due to many DHD's being incorrectly factory calibrated with regards to the proximity sensor, I wrote a little app to allow one to change the calibration on-the-fly and persist it over reboots.
This app is specifically for those experience issues with the proximity sensor.
Well known symptoms include the following:
- Screen fails to turn off when holding to face on a call
- Screen does turn off when holding to face on a call, but fails to come back on, requiring taking out the battery
These problems are common in custom kernels/ROM's. HTC has addressed this issue however in their kernels from 1.32 onwards, but have failed to provide an acceptable solution for some.
I present DHD Proximity Sensor Recalibrator. Download from the attachments below.
Here are some screenshots:

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Usage:
1. Install app.
2. Run app.
3. Press the toggle button to start monitoring.
4. Move your finger over the proximity sensor (the little LED next to the front facing speaker).
5. Adjust the High and Low threshold values to your liking.
For those whose screen does not turn off, it probably means the factory values are set too high.
For those whose screen does not turn back on, it probably means the factory values are set too low.
The setting will be saved, and will be applied every time you reboot your phone. No need to go through any of the steps unless you want to change the calibration. When the settings are applied at boot time, you will get a toasty indicating the calibration value applied.
Possible calibration procedure:
1. Put both values high (will show FAR).
2. Cover sensor with finger.
3. Lower High threshold till it says NEAR.
4. Lower Low threshold by a notch or 2.
5. Test behavior
Removal:
If for whatever reason you find the application does not work, or you do not want it anymore, just uninstall the app, and reboot. Your original factory settings will be in effect again. This application does not modify your system. It might require root rights.
Source code repo:
https://github.com/leppie/DHD-Proximity-Sensor-Recalibrator
Known issues:
- Permissions have changed in CM7 RC2, preventing the application from working correctly. The application will need root. Will investigate how to add that, if needed.
- Some reports that the Gingerbread leaked ROM is not working.
Gingerbread/newer kernel update:
Due to changes in the source code made by HTC to overcome this issue in the kernel, this app will probably not run correctly.
There are 2 problems (as found from latest CM kernel source):
1. When the kernel recalibrates the proximity on the fly, it fails to update the internal structures in the kernel. This makes the kernel not report correct values. I have made a kernel patch to rectify the issue. Please ask your kernel developer to apply the following changes: https://github.com/leppie/htc-kernel-msm7x30/commit/b1d0a85f3fe5252c8ab43ba98261bcb1b8498d8a
2. Secondly and more seriously, depending on the initial calibrated value (if LT is greater or equal to 0x50), the kernel will kick off a polling thread. This will overwrite the changes made by this app, as soon as you use the proximity sensor for the first time (eg the phone). Afterwards you can apply the values from this app again, and from my experiments the value sticks then (up to the next reboot). Unfortunately, this polling mechanism fixes the issue for most users, so it cannot just be disabled. It is easy to disable in the kernel source however, but will probably break most other people's proximity behavior if they do not have this app installed. As you can see, there is not much I can do about this. The best option is to compile your own kernel.
Manual cleaning of the sensor:
After time the sensor will become dirty from the environment. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28495941&postcount=357 for details on cleaning it.
Please report any bug and suggestions.
Cheers

how do you get it to work? when i move my finger over the sensor nothing happens. it always says near?
Them you have to change the settings. The app works great btw!
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
If it says near, make your values higher.
In a bad case, keep your finger over the sensor, and then increase the low threshold till it changes.
Then work from the settings there.
Awesome!
This is my favorite app to date! I couldn't use any Cyanogen mod because of this issue. (My device was not waking up after the first phone call) Everything else worked fine.
Now I can use my phone as a phone too!
Would recommend to any O2 Germany DHD user having similar issues.

Just finished publishing zMooth gesture app in android market, it will allow you to use gestures to mimic back, home, menu and power (Pro version) hardware keys.
I wrote this app to be unobtrusive by using minimum amount of screen space but at the same time be very easy and intuitive to use. If you use for couple of days you will understand how easy it is to use.
after you install the app you will see a blue area at the bottom of the screen, swipe left on this area to go back, swipe right for menu and gesture a up-arrow(^) for home.
I highly suggest that you try using different gesture length and speed, it is very sensitive at default settings.
I picked the gestures which will have least conflict/collision so that when you gesture you don't have to worry that it might fire the wrong action. The aim was to make them error resistant and build user confidence in gesturing.
you don't have to do complete swipe or draw arrow symbol correctly, just a small quick gesture will work.
The swipes don't have to be perfectly horizontal, you can do them at an angle.
Small swipe/gesture will also work, they don't have to do be as long as they were shown in screenshots.
I didn't pick any complicated gestures because back, home and menu should be achievable with out giving a second thought, after couple of days the fingers should move with least effort and finger flexion and MUST be easier than pressing buttons.

Sorry for the quality, I never posted videos of phone screen's before, didn't know how difficult it is to capture these screen's on video.
Omg! I was dreaming about app like this
This is my second HD2, and I'm a little paranoic about using screen-off and back key
Big thx.
Hmmm, I can't set Display Height below 20. If I set less than 20, turn off the app, this always back to 20 value.
Secondly, would be great to able to set position of the bar (not only the bottom).
klusek1985: I personally never turn off the app so never noticed it. I set min as 20 so people don't accidentally make it too small. is 20 being too obtrusive? what lcd_density are you using?.
going to sleep will be back tomorrow sometime.
I use HD2, so it is WVGA. Density is 240 (NexusOne rom)
Imo 20 value is too large for me. Maybe you can unlock full spectrum of values able to set ?
I understand an option like change color of bar etc. will be avaible on future versions ?
Again, good work
Great job man!!! I always think pressing the back button is a very extra movement... and you just save the world!!! ha ha.... thanks man for your effort! Appreciate it. I think this app is cool...
First impression is really good, I would like to see some features as:
- Ability to move the zone to anywhere on the display
- change the colour of the zone / change colour of gesture draw
- make the zone / gesture draw transparent (top priority reqeust from me )
- set the size of the "popup" box / disable bigger box?
- disable draw area if application X is running (like widgetlocker - dont need this nice app when the screen is locked) (high priority for me again )
- maybe later, add custom draws? draw a square and launch application X
If these feature will come in the future... well what should I say, that would be awesome
Really nice!
Edit: Cant find it on market yet
Edit2: Bug found:
When chaning the height I have to reenable the app otherwise I get an error "error executing gesture, please restart app"
Sometimes also happens when device gets into standby and wakes up.. (need to confirm)
Was planning some of the features you mentioned already. Thanks for feedback. App is in market now, updated the OP.
I installed from Market, and I can set 10 (size) now
Thanks for this work, it's usefull, but i've a problem with the height, i want 10, in setting it says 10, but when i do the first gesture on my home, it come back with 50 of height, and in setting, it show me 10 ???

It's like a dream come true! Thank you! Please keep updating this!
This is really handy!
But I would like to have home on gesture up, instead of having to draw an arrow.
Left:back
right:menu
up:home
Heck, if there's time. Why not let us create ur own gestures for app-launching ect?
And transparancy would be nice, but I see that's already been suggested.
Even if you decide not to do this, I think I'll keep this app on my phone.

you don't have to really draw the complete arrow (or left/right swipe), just do quick gesture up and down. up arrow is like home symbol(like roof of your house).
try to decrease length/time of gesture and see how sensitive and easy it is. I put long lines in screen shots just to show for beginners.
version 1.0.4 pushed to market, hopefully fixes height issues that you guys are having.
Thanks for the update, now, i can have height on 10 ...
Sorry, but in green, it's possible ?
Great application, fast and smooth. Only I can't lock on sense rom...
Very nice app. Just one suggestion. Isn't it more intuitive to swipe up to access menu? Usually the menu will slide up from bottom of screen so I think it's more natural to swipe up?
Awesome App, i was tired of pressing the home button on my hd2.
On an hd2 running typhoons 3.0.1
^ goes to home screen
Left does nothing
Right brings up the menu
Zmooth 1.04
ya since menu slides up gesture should be slide up, you can actually slide up inclined as shown in below screenshot to pull up the menu.
I picked the gestures which will have least conflict/collision so that when you gesture you don't have to worry that it might fire the wrong action. The aim was to make them error resistant and dependable.
Hi all S6 users out there,
Everybody knows which awful it is, when you are outside on a sunny day, the battery drops below 6% and you need to finish your work, message or whatever, but the screen goes "black". The brightness goes so dark, that you can see nothing in sunlight. Nothing! I have made an root tool which let you turn the brightness all up again.
I hope I made something useful for our flagship that we love :fingers-crossed:
Aaaaand, as a "bonus" I added a control for the flashlight, which let's you turn the brightness of the LED much brighter than normal (This may reduce the lifetime of the flashlight... MAY.... But I don't think so...).

Is possible to force very high brightness (super brightness ? (at default is active only on direct sunlight and not on manual).
i read this:
"the Galaxy S6 the Maximum Brightness can go much higher when Automatic Brightness is turned On, so that users can’t permanently park the Manual Brightness slider to very high values, which would run down the battery quickly. High screen Brightness is only needed for High Ambient Light, so turning Automatic Brightness On will not only provide better high ambient light screen visibility but also longer battery running time."

I've tried to force it, but it doesn't work. I have even made a backup of /sys/devives/ when I was on sunlight and then restored in a dark room, but the screen doesn't went bright.
The only thing I noticed is a file that is named "weakness_hbm_comp", when i turn it to "1" the screen goes a bit brighter, but not that bright as it is in sunlight.
I might be crazy but I think the LED torch slider doesn't really seem to do anything on my device (SM-G920I, XtreStoLite).

Thanks for the feedbacks
What mean "do nothing"? It does not increase the bright or it doesn't work at all?
Mine (G920F) increase the bright when I slide to the right... And it becomes very bright!
...
Please, anyone with XtreStoLite and adb installed, run this command:
Code:
adb shell su -c 'find' /sys/devices/ > Output.txt
And paste the Output.txt file here...
I will try to fix it ASAP.

I run xtrestolite, but not anywhere near a computer today. But what i mean is that I turn the flash on the normal way and then use the slider. Nothing happens.

There is the output, couldn't attach on xda (>512kb).

You don't need to turn on the flashlight first. You turn it on in the app sliding to the right. If you turn it on with another app, it will bug. But don't worry, I will fix that.

Thank you!!! :victory:
I will look at your directory structure and try to fix the problem.
EDIT: The structure seems to be the same. I couldn't identify the problem. I am now flashing xtrestolite. Let's see...
(The first rom that i'm flashing on my s6. It look interesting...)
EDIT2: Yes, I just confirmed that it doesn't work with the xtrestolite ROM. I am trying to fix this issue....

I think it won't work, but you can try it. If it works, reply here with your phone model so that I know that it works.
very useful app
I've been using this rom since a good time and I've not found a fix for that issue yet.

Yes, by locking your screen, the brightness will go back to its original.

Isn't there any way to make it ''permanent''?
this rom suffer the max brightness 115 , its kinda anoying, i realized that the weakness_hbm_comp set to 1, increases at leat to 230 but rolls back on reboot

I would need to run a service, that detects that the screen is on and restores the brightness, but I think that would waste a tiny bit of the battery.

What is SideSqueeze?
SideSqueeze is an innovative and unique app that uses the barometric pressure sensor in your device to detect squeezes and screen presses. It is compatible only with Samsung Galaxy devices from 2017 onwards, although some people have reported varying degrees of success with Pixel devices.
What It Does
SideSqueeze gives your S8/S9/S10 series Galaxy the ability to respond to squeezes, double squeezes, triple squeezes, quadruple squeezes, long squeezes, and/or inertial squeezes, as well as force presses on the screen. For example, you can double squeeze your phone to activate Google Assistant...or maybe you'd like to quadruple squeeze to toggle auto-rotation. And now with Tasker integration, you can even create elaborate tasks to do just about anything and trigger them with any type of squeeze! SideSqueeze's new modular GUI allows you to pick and choose what you want to do with ease.
Features (not all available in trial version)
7 detectable squeeze types (single, double, triple, quadruple, long, long double-squeeze, and inertial)
3 detectable press types (single, long, and 2-finger)
Independently selectable criteria allow you to assign multiple actions to any trigger type (if lockscreen open, if homescreen open, if camera open, if S-Pen detached, if within 5-seconds of power on, if the phone is ringing, if in-call, or if screen is off)
New app picker to launch any app of your choosing
Tasker integration to launch any task of your choosing
Quick Settings tile to toggle detection engine
Wide selection of common actions, such as flashlight toggling, status bar toggling, etc
Adjustable pressure thresholds
Calibration assistant to customize SideSqueeze to your device's unique characteristics
Efficient detection algorithm that is designed to be as lightweight and low-power as possible with no significant impact on battery life
Questions?
See the in-app Help section for answers to commonly asked questions.
Where do I get it?
SideSqueeze 2 is now available on the Play store!

Interesting concept, but I think it's wrong. It's using the touch screen pressure as it's gauge from what testing and results I could fetch.
Correct me if am wrong but I didn't think devices had a sensor for pressure in the reference made out in this app???...

The app detects squeezes by monitoring the barometric pressure sensor inside your sealed device. An algorithm looks for changes of the proper type and magnitude that correspond to squeezing the sides, and an action is performed. Once you learn how to squeeze it, I find it to be reliable. The FAQ (and video clip) describe how best to do it.
wonderfull app man...i'm tested now and work very well
it will be possible to add own applications?

Thank you! Yes, I'll be adding that soon.
Please add support for Tasker. It would be nice to be able to configure the squeeze on a per app basis.
I wanted to give it a try, but it says that the early access program is currently full
I have expanded the limit, and am working on bug fixes.
Great app! Can you provide us .apk so we can test on other devices? Play Store says app is not compatible with my SGS7.
I tried it and the squeezing is wildly inconsistent. On top of that it activates even when I'm scrolling the screen with one hand. Great concept, but doesn't work very well sorry.

That doesn't sound normal, and I'm not sure why. I'll let you know if I find anything out. What device/OS are you using?
Amazing... impressive how it work well, I have a note 8 and use the app all day long, no bugs until now.
Please make more options, like turn off the screen and shooting selfies on camera.
Does not work for me on [email protected] note 8 with case on.

It will not work with a case on, as the dev said, it detects slight changes within the frame, which would be absorbed by your case, and thus not transmitted to the body of the phone itself

What kind of case?
the adb command "adb shell sh /sdcard/grant" returns a "no such file or directory"
nvm it works now after the update. thanks
I like the idea of it, I'm not facing any trouble when I remove my case and SQUEEZE! However, while using the Stand case for the note 8 (made by Samsung) I can't get it to work.
works with cases, just adjust sensitivity. one thing i noticed is that app gets killed quite easily.i have to constantly relaunch it. other than that, i feel like i have a pixel 2!
thanks
