I switched to this phone (HTC Hero) from the Palm Pre and while the Pre had its issues it had some pluses over this phone. One being the email program. I know yahoo sux and all but this is my primary email for business and for some reason this phone constantly gives a login error when trying to get mail from it. WHY?? Also there is no push email? And is there or will there be swipe delete available, ever? I am new here and searched for emails before making this thread and nothing related came back. Thanks for any info
The "Google Mail" program (the one with the red and white envelope as an icon) does IMAP-IDLE/Push Mail. The HTC "Mail" program (the one with the mailbox as an icon) does not.
K-9 or k9mail also does Push mail (IMAP-IDLE). You can find it in the market or at http://code.google.com/p/k9mail/ . It also shows the error messages if something goes wrong, so you have a chance to correct your settings.
thanks, I appreciate the help. I don't see the option for push email in the google envelope, but I will try the other
Google doesn't call it push, its in settings>data synchronization>google>auto sync
I've tried for the last week to get the HTC mail apps to get mail pushed but resigned myself to just using the gmail app, which works great for push mail.
Google Mail seems to be most reliable for quick mail delivery, if you're stuck with a Yahoo account for business reasons you can set Yahoo Mail to auto-forward to Google Mail and then your Hero can download it from there. You can even set your reply-to address to Yahoo so it's transparent to the person emailing you.
that, or open a gmail account and have it pull stuff from yahoo, bypass yahoo all together and have either gmail activesync or htc mail checking in intervals
He shouldn't have to do this. The phone should come with a good built in mail client... The iPhone has a good mail client that can use Push GMAIL, Mobile Me etc... as well as Exchange support and iMap and Pop3 support... If HTC is going to ship phones with their own software on a device that goes outside of what is provided through the OS and Google then they should ensure the quality of that software.

What's wrong with K9 mail? Half the reason for having such an open platform is so that developers can create their own apps and so that there is a variety of choices for end users.
People keep comparing Android phones to the iPhone without understanding that they're VERY different platforms. One is highly customizable and extensible (Android) and the other is locked down to being the same worldwide (iPhone.)
Extensibility should never come at the price of reliability and quality. BTW there are other email Apps made for the iPhone that work very well. I was just pointing out that if you're going to bundle your software and sell your product at a premium it should be good software and not works some times under certain conditions and when the stars align just right. They are different platforms yes, but quality is quality regardless of open or closed (or perceived closed... you still have to root your phone to do a a alot of this customization you speak of which is no different than jailbreaking an iPhone if you want to be objective about it). You shouldn't have to rely on third party developers to make an app because your built in app isn't exceptional quality. If you package it with your product you should be stamping and standing by the quality of your product. Developers should add new features and apps that do things better than your existing app sure, but not because your software isn't up to snuff but because your product has already set a high standard and the developers can work hard to hit or even exceed that standard. If you have to cut some features to ensure that the features that are there are done REALLY REALLY well then so be it. Quality over quantity any day. This isn't a rail on Android as an OS as much as it is a rail on HTC for charging a premium for their phones because they package their own software with the phone that 'kinda works'. Why charge that premium and add your software to an already good phone OS if you're not going to make sure it works perfectly with industry standard features out of the box.

Has anyone spent any time comparing these two apps?
I really like Moxier. Even though it doesn't give you direct view access to your contacts or calendar, it does sync them and allow you to access your contacts from within an email and it gives you calendar alerts in your notification bar.
Touchdown has great support. It allows direct view of contacts and calendar.
Both support activesync push.
Right now, I'm trying to determine which one I'll be paying for.
The battery life seems to be a little bit better with Touchdown, but I can't say for certain.
Anyone have any thoughts?
Been usin' TD for about 5 months now, since the early betas, and it never ceases to impress me.
Yeah, I've been using TD off and on for the last few weeks.
I decided to test Moxier the other day when they sent me an email about the limited release.
I like Moxier in a lot of ways but I'm convinced it's not as refined as TD and it tears my battery down where TD doesn't appear to affect it at all.
I think I will be sticking with TD.
I do wish that handled folders as well as Moxier but all in all, I think TD is a better product.
Thanks for the input.
Just got notified of TD 3.0 today. Seems cool so far. Not sure what's change exactly. Something about accelerated push.
Touchdown is way better than moxier. Te mere fact that you can select multiple emails for deletion is worth it.
I love the synching of everyhtign else as well.
Calender, contacs.
Yes, touchdown kicks ass on Moxier.
Moxier has the ability to do what you are asking. Multiple selects to move, archive, delete etc.
I am using Moxier Pre Release because TD won't handle my mailbox (not sure why).
It does do a number on the battery and I would not purchase it until that gets fixed. It also seems to be turning push on all the time. Service keeps reloading itself and that may be linked to the battery issue. Moxier team has some work to do, definitely. But don't count them out just yet, there's some things that they are definite doing right.
Now we have another option ROADSYNC from DATAVIZ. They released a beta version for now.

I tried it. It won't let me trust my self-signed cert so I can't use it yet.
I think TD is still the best bet. I just wish it would let me download the current content of select folders instead of only what is new. That's the one thing Moxier does that nothing else so far can do.
Have you guys tried Haykuro's H build, it has an Inbuid exchange client developed by HTS itself. it is by far the best one. almost as feature rich as any WinMo phone. You can even send and accept calender invitations. plus the contacts sync with phone contacts and it will show both GMail contacts and Exchange contacts. it is fast, feature rich, very low battery consumption. I am sure when the release build comes out All Moxier's and touchdown's will be out of business. cauz HTC one is free & some one will port it from Sapphire's build to released G1 cupcake build.

i prefer to have a fullty functional, stable working phone with myfaves.
I mostly agree with Henchman.
I don't mind being on the bleeding edge to some extent, but with certain apps still not working with the Haykuro builds and htc exchange apparently fubar'ing calander entries, I'm inclined to wait just a little bit longer.
I am tempted every day though. I may bite the bullet and do it anyway, I just haven't reached that point yet.
Backup your phone to NAND and test it out. Worst case, you re-flash with your previous build. I'm going to try it this weekend.
I'm horny for native exchange support, I really am.
Native exchange plus native USB or WiFi tethering makes me want to jizz my shorts. Not sure when or if the latter will arrive, but I will keep hope alive.

Well, I went ahead and flashed theDude's version even without exchange support. I just hope that it gets added soon. Right now, this is just a solid build and I'll live without exchange for a while longer if I have to.
i find myself unwilling to pay for an app that will become part of the OS soon, especially at the cost for touchdown and moxier.

Don't hold your breath.
I flashed the Haykuro update, and yes, it does exchange.
But the email client is still as lame as ever.
No multiple email selects to delete multiple emails.
Is there a way to extract that exchange program from Haykuros version so that we can use it on other 1.5 versions?
Been using MailShadow since the beginning.
Prefer it over TouchDown as it syncs all your exchange data with Gmail (contacts/calendar/email) so you get to use the built in Google apps. It's also better since it makes your ENTIRE exchange mailbox available via the gmail app.... all your folders (labels), etc. I do have TouchDown as a backup though just in case.
Only downside is that it needs to run on a desktop computer at all times to sync- doesn't matter to me though as my computer is always on.
Haykuro new ADP1.5Hr4
Upcoming features in ADP1.5Hr4:
+ Newer SuperUser app
+ HTC E-Mail client. (Exchange support should work.. more info on this feature as i progress)
+ Based on newer firmware.
Had both.
Moxier has too many bugs. Contacts with "work"-numbers not getting synced. Force closes if you click on the header of a mail.
No notification if a new mail is in a folder (have set up some rules on the server to see important mails directly).
Notification itself is crap. If you open Moxier directly, not through the statusbar, the icon will never disappear.
TD is working way better..
Support of Moxier is worst. Takes weeks to get any information..
TouchDown gave me a free license since I am a T-Mo employee so I use TouchDown....and I really like it.
I have a Vodafone Magic, thus no Exchange capability. I tried TouchDown, couldn't get it to work at all, and was on the verge of flashing my ROM in order to install something with native Exchange support until I found this thread over on the Dream forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=536727
They've stripped out the Mail.apk file from the MyTouch ROM (which they found over here in Sapphire land!). The APK file installs and runs fine on my Vodafone/Google branded model using Apps Installer. You'll have a new email program called "Work Email" which will happily run side by side with the GoogleMail app or indeed the crappy built in Email app. No contacts, no calendar, but proper Exchange push email in a clean, no frills interface.
I thought I'd share this with people because it's not in an obvious place where people on the Sapphire/Magic boards would find it easily (and also so I can track it down quickly myself in the future!)
As an aside, am I right in thinking that there are several HTC-branded Exchange clients for the Magic? We've got
* "Work Email", which is a separate app, and which comes with the MyTouch flavoured Magic devices. This is email only.
* a version of the main email app which supports ActiveSync along with the more usual POP3 and IMAP, and which I believe comes with Asian market Magics. This does Contacts and Calendar.
Thats too bad you couldn't get Touchdown to work. That little app is so wonderful. It has tons of features and even supports its own set of widgets for tasks, inbox and calender.
Yes, Touchdown works great for me too. I'm 99% sure that your problem is related to incorrect settings you made (I did the same). Check out the Touchdown Google group. The TD devs answer every question, most likely the same day. Have never seen such a close support.

Also follow this getting started pdf, in case you didn't know it:

Cheers,
Derek (happy user, not an employee
This is fantastic. I have touchdown working (i had to use domain\username to get it to work) but it costs $29. This is free! if the calendar can be added then that would make it perfect.

Just like to confirm something...does the Work Email app has activesync capabilities?
Wonder if you could help me with my touchdown config..
My company us running Ms Exchange 2003 SP 2 server with a self-signed certificates. From the advance config screen, I know that the activesync status is ready. i've also loaded the client cert. I also able to see my folders from my the choose folder screen, so I assume that I've the correct configuration.
The problem is that I can't get my inbox to sync but my sent-mail folder is sync and also I'm able to sent emails..
Any hint?
i'm no longer using touchdown, so i can't check the specific settings, but have you checked the settings to make sure it is checking for new emails automatically as they arrive rather than manually or after a certain period of time?
I finally get touchdown to work after emptying my inbox folder ..
I don't see why you're all talking about Touchdown when the topic was created about the native push email support.
Back on topic, I've been using the "work email" as it comes built into Cyanogens ROMs which are of course compatible with the Magic. It works very well and I'd much prefer to use this than an installed app.
remote provisioning
You may or may not be able to connect to your exchange server using "Work Email" app. If your exchange admins require that your phone has been remotely provisioned you won't be able to use this app.
Touchdown guys sorted this out. That's why I paid the money for a great app. Worth every cent.
Hi, I have the chance to buy an unlocked/unbranded Galaxy S, but I need your advice about the following:
a. Exchange Mail/Calendar/Contact sync, this is a deal braker for me, the only experience that I have with android was the Milestone, with the Milestone using the mail program or TouchDown was imposible to make my exchange account work, mail worked sometimes, calendar and contact never.
My company use Exchange 2010 with enforced security, I have no problems using it on my symbian devices (E71 and now N97 mini), of course WinMo phones also work without problem the same as iPhone (my wife work with me and her iPhone works), I have no partners with android phones to check with them. Asking anything to my IT is not an option, my company is large (+250K employees) and they won´t make exceptions.
b. Can I use hotmail via IMAP or only POP? (please, don´t suggest to use Gmail, I also use Gmail but need access to Hotmail)
c. My country is not android market "friendly", any experience using Market Enabler to access the market and buying on it?
Many many thanks for your answers. Regards.
I can only answer to C:
Use MarketAccess:
http://amip.tools-for.net/wiki/android/marketaccess
And Eris Market Fix (found in Android Market, to see the protected apps).
I have been using these on 2.1 and now 2.2 and they are working perfectly.
So glad that I have been able to buy apps!
I can only reply to b:
imap works with the stock client but you're better off with K9 from the market (it's free) as it supports imap push and works well.
For b. you can use gmail (a. I'm not sure but you can try it)
Let me explain:
On gmail Settings > Accounts and Import
In Send mail as:
Click on Send mail from another adress (follow the steps)
Then under:
Check mail using POP3:
Click on Add POP3 email account (follow the steps)
Now you will be able to recieve and send message from and to your hotmail account.
If you don't want to do it this way look on community.seven.com for their mail app
NB! Your company Exchange administrators could (and should) in any time to exclude any phone OS to synchronize according to the company policy for security or another reason.
Question a:
- this should not be possible in the Eclair native eMail application (version 2.1 of Android). This might be possible in paid applications, if they have full MAPI compatibility.
- this should be better possible in the Froyo (version 2.2 of Android). Don't know if it works out of box, but...:
Exchange support
Improved security with the addition of numeric pin or alpha-numeric password options to unlock device. Exchange administrators can enforce password policy across devices.
Remote wipe: Exchange administrators can remotely reset the device to factory defaults to secure data in case device is lost or stolen.
Exchange Calendars are now supported in the Calendar application.
Auto-discovery: you just need to know your user-name and password to easily set up and sync an Exchange account (available for Exchange 2007 and higher).
Global Address Lists look-up is now available in the Email application, enabling users to auto-complete recipient names from the directory.
Exchange information from http://developer.android.com/sdk/android-2.2-highlights.html.
there is also TouchDown 2.0 (paid) for Android that is vastly improved over TouchDown 1.0
back to hotmail account, it works great with the Samsung push Email & IM program, i have all my hotmail accounts real & fake ones all running simultaneously.
but as metioined above if you'd like more funtionality then you might be better off with K9 (free) mail app.

the samsung modified email app push works for you? I only checked with the stock firmware i had (JF3) and didn't have push for imap
btw: i'm personally not a lot in favor of importing stuff to gmail. that's embrace and extend at it's best: they read all data for their statistics. So ok it's a google os with a lot of such stuff but i'd rather separate some things when possible. (note:k9 is giving full satisfaction, just wondering about stock)
yes i'm using the Samsung Push Email as my main email app for all my email accounts, including google
4 accounts from hotmail
3 accounts from yahoo
12+ accounts from gmail
i hardly use my PC for email now since i got the phone, it's amazing!
Many thanks to all, one thing that Android doesn´t lack is user´s support. Since the N8 is delayed again I ordered the Galaxy S to give it a try.
I can respond in general that if you going to use Galaxy frequently with GPS, WIFI, Email then carry your charger or USB plug.
I found that even with light usage the battery needs to be charged everyday which I find it that I cant use it as my main phone as I travel a lot and I need more than 2 day with light usage of phone.
Folks, can anybody with a N4 do an email functionality review on the N4 (and perhaps comparing it to iOS mail client)?
I use a 4S for my corporate (and personal) email, and like most would know, the Mail application on iOS has its own sets of ways to get things done. Some simple things like group select, select all, mail attachments on either new mail or replying are not allowed by the stock application (just allows images which is useless for corporate email). I also use active sync and generally it works very well for push. I also have the need to search my email from old archives (mails which are 2 or 3 years old). I am not happy with the iOS mail client, but it just about does the job.
I haven't tried the Android space and there is no way I can try this without buying a phone. From reading reviews, looks like K9 may be the client which supports my needs (We really need a mutt like MUA for hand helds!)
Would appreciate any pointers around this.
Imagine gmail app .its basically the same. I have NHS e-mail (hospital) that uses secure exchange to use it I would have to encrypt my phone for security reasons. However, the email functionality is the same as in gmail from what I remember
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
The stock one is fine these days - I highly recommend Aquamail though.
There's also Touchdown which is optimised for exchange.. Not used that one (our company moved to google apps).
On my old nexus S I am able to setup up multiple exchange accounts native.
I do an internship in 2 company 2 days in a week and also work in another company 3days in a week and I'm also planning to get office 365 for business for my private company (might sound complicated but it's workable). Doing the maths I need to be able to setup 3 exchange accounts wich works perfectly on my old nexus. (in fact need to set up 4 but I can live without the 4th one).
The important part is mail for 3 of them and callendar for 2 accounts (and if possible see google callendar + exchange callendars in 1 view based on colors) all my contact are on gmail since they overlap and gmail makes it easy.
I was setting up my phone on the htc website "https://start.htcsense.com" but at the end when I reached setting up accounts I'm only able to setup 1 exchange account is this on the device the same or not. Already preordered my htc one so would love to know if I have to cancel my order or not before it arives

It is possible to set up multiple exchange accounts using the HTC email application on the HTC one.
The application in itself is graphically beautiful and a pleasure to use.....however it is functionally lacklustre. Managing folders is a nightmare, the colour of each account cannot be edited etc etc
Do yourself a favour, buy Enhnanced Email from the market and use that.
I also use a pay application for calendar (Business calendar).
Alternatively...wait until an AOSP rom is released...and you will have the same identical software experience you had with the nexus device.
thx for answer if I atleast can set up multiple accounts then thats good
I will look into those aps once I have my one

It is a shame that HTC did not refine their email app. Because it looks fantastic and is really smooth.
BUT
You cannot hide/unhide folders. Visualising emails is a pain as it defaults back to the "all messages" option...and thus if you have multiple accounts....and receive over 100 emails a day...it looks like a mess.
Enhanced email does not look pretty and the Dev has not been too active as of late...but it is functionally faultless in handling multiple accounts and calendars.
Touchdown from nirodesk would be perfect...except...they do not support syncing multiple account simultaneously.
K9 no native exchange support (WebDav does not work on Exchange 2010 servers)
Moxier Email has native exchange support but, imho, is just an inferior version of Enhanced email.
I will certainly look into enhanched email
I liked my old setup with native exchange mail client on my nexus since it looked like the gmail client (with much less features but still worked) and it worked perfectly with google calendar
but I'm willing to give sense a try even if I have to buy some new apps
