ok so these forums have help me sooo much from rooting my g1 for the first time and upgrading my g1 to the max. But I've comed to a problem on partitioning my g1.
I am currently using cyanogenmod and I use amon ra's recovery 1.5.0 which I have found really easy to use.
So basically I'm trying to get a linux swap of 96mb and I belive a 512mb ext partition but when I do this on amon ra I chect on cosole by first typing su and then free to check my memory and my swap partition says 0? And I'm trying to see what I'm doing wrong?
What I basically do is I:
wipe
Format my sd via computer with swiss knife or bassic format tool
Plug in my card
Wipe again
Wipe ext partion
And then I do the ext/linux/fat32 partition thing
And then I do my flashing.
Am I doing something wrong? Or maybe taking too many steps? Lol
But if anybody could tell me what to do it would be good.
And again I don't mind starting out fresh.
I am going to assume your new...
And I am a bit of a smart a$$ so deal with it. It's also late and I'm hungry, so I'm a triple threat.
1. Welcome to the forums.
2. keep up to date on the programs...RA1.5.0 had a bug in it. It was replaced with RA1.5.1 in less than 8 hours.
Check for daily updates on everything you use.
3. Don't do it by hand...Amon RA 1.5.1 does all this for you. (has since like 1.3.9 I think)
Even walks you through it step be step.
Its under the heading PARTITION SDCARD (Can't miss it on the main screen. It's there on 1.5 too)
Know your Sdcard specs b4 proceeding.
It even upgrades your partitions...don't bother with apps2sd if your not on a class 4 or 6 card.
And yes you do want ext 4 if you have a class 4 or 6 card.
No I won't tell you how to tell the difference. Google will.
4. Not to sound like an a$$...oh wait I already put in that disclaimer...
Seriously are you learning about what your doing or are you following along blindly?
Just following along results in posts like "OMG I just F*ing Bricked my Phone trying that lame a$$ write up. How do I fix my phone!?!?"
Read up on the programs before you use them, and ask questions about how to do something before trying. Please.
Have a nice... ah who am I kidding...see ya!
Ok..
1. Thanks for the welcome
2. You didn't help much but still thanks.
3. I'm not that of a complete dumba$$ and I do try to stay up with the updates and stuff but I go to school full time and I work right after but thanks for the advise...
4. But what I was looking for was how to start out fresh with cyanogen and a partition on my phone because when I try it it doesn't show on console but the size on my sd does decrese.
But again thanks.

Do you have a userinit.sh setup to activate the swap on boot? Otherwise, you can try entering "swapon" in a terminal window and then "free" to see if you now have swap being utilized. Just having the partition does not enable swapping.
If you want to try to re-partition it one last time, I wrote a very simple excel program that walks you through the partitioning. I boot into recovery, and go to console. From there, just type the text exactly as written. There are 2 variables that you will type in, the swap and the actual size of the card. By typing those in, it will update the spreadsheet with the correct values to input. I have formatted quite a few this way and never had a problem that wasn't due to a bad SD card.
Anyway, this is what it looks like:

I guess in my cranky state you missed my point.
There is no reason to do any of the partitioning on another computer, or by hand. Amon Ra's recovery image does that operation with a little interaction from you.
Basically it does what speed.racer's script does, and it's already on your phone.
As for not seeing the partition information...
A fresh partition has nothing on it, so you will get a 0 when looking to see how much data it is storing.
Look again after you have booted up to the home screen.
Does that help?
Well its been like about 2 hours since i did the repartition and im sure that it would of have had taken up mem by now but it says 0 0 0 and
When i do the swap on thin it says to set swap priority?

im just wondering how i would go about creating a swap partition i read a lot of threads about it but most threads also talk about making a user.config thing and it kinda throws me off. Do i need to do the user.config. Also i am using a 8gb class 6 card 1.5gb is is my ext 2 partition. Is the swap partition just a partiton i can make upto 128mb and then set the swap with the swapper apk at 96mb swap. Also can i use paragon partition manager to do it but it only lets me do 128mb at the least i figure ill do it this way and then just set the swap at 96mb for mligns rom. Thanks
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=534714
that should help you partition cards
you need the user.conf if your gonna use the swap/compcache...see your rom makers details on it and adjust accordingly
you can use swapper too but its better to use linux-swap through user.conf
ok this is how i did it i used paragon partioner and made a 150mb linux swap2 and then i used swapper to make the swap 96mb and the swappiness at 80 will work like that or no
i guess it should work fine....
im not sure if linuxswap2 is compatible

what do you mean its not to big its not at 96mb
noo......that says that its 248mb....lmao...are you sure you copied the right one?
ya right next to swap under total it says 248524 lol dang is there another way i can still do this.
lol not next to total...next to swap
i forgot how much ram the g1 shows, but it comes with 192mb
248-192=56
ya it says 248 but now im useing droidswap from the market and its reading 97mb lol by the way what backing swap is it the samething as swap
I would just flash the RA Recovery Image 1.2.3 which can be found in the development section. It has an option to to format and partition your SD with an FAT32, Ext3, and a Swap partition. It does it all on its own, just make sure you back up before.
ok then how do i get rid of the linuxswap2 partition i made because i think that is causing me the problems i think. And if i do this can revert back to cyangoens recovery and still keep the linux swap that ill make with ra recovery
yes you can but amon ra's recovery is just a modded version of cm-recovery1.4 with more options so there is no point in reverting
one thing is you can not type the recovery command in the console, you must type reboot to get out, here's the link to the image
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=566669
what do you mean you cant type the recovery command in the console you have to reboot? also how do i delete my linuxswap2 partition
if you have no clue what i am talking about stay away from the console terminal in the recovery
just select the option to reformat on the list of commands in the recovery

i'am on 2.2.1 stock rooted though....now i believe i made the mistake of moving apps to SD BEFORE partitioning so now i have like a TON of apps on my SDcard and like 20mbs of internal storage LEFT but then i partitioned my SDcard -____- lol a FAIL ...so should i delete all of my 171+ apps and THEN Repartition ?
You could just use a partition manipulation app rather than repartitioning. I recently did this using gparted on my linux workstation. Not sure of any free windows apps that do the same. If you are not running linux, you can always use a bootable USB img to make the changes.
parted (gnu.org/software/parted/)
gparted frontend (gparted.sourceforge.net)
Here are some tools to make life easier when dealing with bootable USB images and windows.
linuxliveusb.com
unetbootin.sourceforge.net
hmmm alright ill give it a shot thanks i've got windows though not Linux
If you don't have partition magic or another app installed to change partitions around, just use either linuxliveusb.com or unetbootin.sourceforge.net to create a bootable usb key that will let you resize your partitions. They don't install anything or make any changes to your hard disks.
question though bro if you go into the ROOT of a partitioned SDCARD how does it look? like is there a SPARE folder for the apps? if possible a screenshot?
I'm too new to the forums to post real links, but below is a screenshot of gparted showing my nexus one. I opened gparted and went to view and checking "Device Information"
For my current partition layout, which is just 1 big partition, I see everything that I have saved to the SD card. My apps get installed on /sdcard/.android_secure

What distribution are you booting? There should be a menu with gparted listed. You could at least go to a console/terminal/xterm whatever and type in gparted.
Both tools for creating a usb stick should offer a gparted distro.
well when i go into terminal and type in gparted i get this.....UNLESS im doing it wrong...
Which distro are you running? You should install the gpared distro on your usb stick or at least systemrescuecd. Both of those are guaranteed to have gparted. I'm not sure about the others.

where can i find those ??
If you go to the links, they will tell you how to do it. It's not a complicated process.
Unetbootin gparted.sourceforge.net/liveusb.php
Download Unetbootin to help you to create this Live USB flash drive. Just run the program on MS windows, then you can follow the GUI to create the live. You will need the GParted live iso file in this method. PS. The boot menu created by Unetbootin is not exactly the same boot menu as the one created in choice 1. Therefore it's recommended to use the choice 1.

Is there partitio manager for android?
I have no PC, all around like a forest.
So, i want to partition sdcard right from android phone.
Is there such manager?
ROM manager want to download and install their native soft, but i cant find my model in their list.
help
hey guys im making this thread cus androidboss dint know how to do this and im mkaing it easier for him(might help others too so )
I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DEAD SDCRADS PHONES LAPTOPS DESKTOPS AND ANYTHING ELSE
requirements
-windows computer
-phone with swiftdroid or any rom that supports inti.d boot scripts
-recovery 5.0.2.3
1. backup all sdcard stuff to computer.
2. wipe all data from the sdcard. after that use this to remove all partitions from sdcard( if you do not have any other partitions on sdcard skip to the end bellow the last picture)
http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm
the pics will look may look different cus im using a older version
mine looks like this

}
to remove all the other partitions
when all is done click apply at the top lefthand corner. at the end after it refreshes make sure there is only one partition left . the FAT32 partition.
so now the card has no data put it in the phone and boot into recovery(5.0.2.3). there go to advance>partition sdcard>EXT size 2M(2M if you dont want a ext partition but if you want then the size is up to you )>swap size 256m
power down the phone and put back data into the sdcard. now enjoy swap
well this is my first thread so hope it helps!!
hahaha thank you
every much bs828 !!!
You helped me a lot!!!
Thanks a lot mate.
Edit: will use this on my girls gt540.
These typos was sent from my Nexus S [I9023]
custom rom??
I use this method more than 2 or 3 month, thats nothing new. Mur4ik Swiftdroid roms use this method, automatically find&use SD card's swap partition.
Before that, i made a video for my 2.1 Ultimate rom, how to partition SD card under windows to use swap&ext partition. (I use swapper for swap and joe's autoapp2SD in my ROM) Sometimes it not possible because compatibility problems between win&card readers but newer CWM recoveries able to partition cards.
yeah like i said androidboss did not know how to do this so i made this. others may also find is useful so why not make it public ??

LoL hope it helped
Just tried it, works like a charm
Im quite a newbie in this, how exactly does swap and ext porticions work and what do they do ?
the memory card you are using is in a fat32 format so by partition it to let say a ext3 file type you can store apps on it(if im not wrong the phone's memory is also ext3) swap works as addition external ram used to run apps
Where can I find recovery 5.0.2.3?

I'm running CM9 Android 4.0.3
http://mikegapinski.androidus.pl/android-4-0-ice-cream-sandwich-aosp/
I've done everything like the tutorial says, but I had older clockwork recovery 2.5 I guess something like that, and I've done the same thing in recovery selected advance>partition sdcard> EXT3 and selected 2gb then selected 256MB Swap, but when I run the OS and enter free in terminal it says swap 0.
What could have caused the problem?
Thanks in advance!

look in root explorer (or any root file manager), in folder etc/init.d
if there isnt script called 07swapon, the swap wont active. and afaik, mike's ics doesnt have this script. u must add it manually.
Yes take 1 from any rom
How can I open *.img files so I can get the 07swapon file?
Can you give me the download link for swapon file?
So I am not a noob to flashing or to android, but I am fairly new to this damned Galaxy Tab... A friends daughter had a small issue with her tab so she called verizon who had her do a bunch of things to it now it totally wont boot. it givs the "Samsung" screen, then the verizon splash screen but wont go any further. I can get it into download mode and i can get it into recovery, but Im seeing a lot of errors in recovery. I am attaching a pic of that...
I have spent the last two days searching all over for a way to get this darn thing running, eveywhere I read :If you can get to the download screen or into recovery it is easy to recover." Well Im guessing its not always so damn easy....
I have a TAR file that is the stock VZW files and I tried that via heimdall, no go... tried multiple ways, nothing. i had it at one time so the video wouldnt work, I could hear the bootup sounds, but couldnt see anything on the tab... could someone please help me out with this thing?
device is a Verizon branded SCHI800BKV
Here is my recovery screenshot...

do a wipe data/factory reset in stock recovery, after it ur device will fully bootup
I wish it was that easy.... here is what I get when i try that..
If you notice the empty line in the middle of the red text, the next line states, "Your storage is not prepared yet, use UI menu for format and reboot menus.
I have let it run at the verizon splash screen overnight just incase it was rebuilding Dalvik, but no go.... and of course all verizon tells me is "As old as this is, you would be better off buying the newer version. Should i ring one up for you?"
It seems to me, like the onboard memory is fragged, and not holding the data when I flash via either Odin or Heimdall...
Internal storage is broken.
crap. thats what I thought.... been reading the threads about using a SD card to run and have NO freaking clue how to do that stuff. good thing this isnt my device.
It has just become simpler! CM10 nightlies can be installed without modifications on an external storage card by creating an empty file activate_data_on_sdcard (the name is important) in the root of the card.

OK, i just grabbed the latest nightly and the Gapps, but as this tab is NOT rooted, nor does it have ClockworkMod recovery installed, how do i flash it? Just put a file with that name on the SD card along with the zip file for CM10? do i still have to partition the SD card? Damn I feel like a noob...:cyclops:
Well, we don't install CWM on the Tab, we install a kernel that has a recovery that can install unsigned zips from storage. The Overcome kernel is known to work. I believe there's a thread in General with links to the Overcome files.
Partition the card: 1 = /SDCARD, Primary FAT32, most of the capacity of the card (say 25 GB on a 32 GB card, or maybe 13 GB on a 16 GB card), 2 = /DATA, Primary Ext4, 2 or 4 GB, 3 = /CACHE, Primary Ext4, rest of the card.
Download the CM10 nightly and JB gapps and put them on the external card.
Create a file named activate_data_on_sdcard on the card.
Put the Tab into Download mode and flash the Overcome kernel as PDA with Odin. The Tab will not boot normally anymore after you've done this. Power off the Tab.
Boot it into recovery by powering it up while holding down Power on and Volume-up until you see the text Galaxy Tab. It should start the recovery.
Wipe data, cache, and Dalvik cache.
Go to the Install menu and select the option to install from storage. Select the nightly and flash it.
It may start to flash and then reboot into recovery. This should now be the CM10 recovery. Flash the nightly again.
Flash gapps for JB.
If all had gone well the Tab will boot and run from the external card.
Hm, I must have been doing this stuff too long now, because I find this whole process quite logical...
My System files are taking up a lot of space on my 64 GB N6. Trying to figure out what is taking up so much space. Considering the device comes in both a 32GB and a 64GB variant I can't see the OS using 35GB. Any thoughts? Running Lineage OS.

I don't understand your explanation. You say in the first sentence that system files are using space, and your second says you're trying to figure out what is using space. If you're rooted you could try DiskUsage. The alternative explanation could be the well-known problem of an update showing only half of your actual storage.
@dahawthorne: He had a screenshot showing system taking up too much space on his LineageOS install. That's not normal, but I think you hit upon the problem. The OP needs to format his internal storage in recovery to resolve this, as I'm willing to bet a userdata.img file was flashed prior to the ROM itself.

Thanks for your advice. So I don't screw anything up, what options do I need to use when doing a wipe in TWRP?
I had this problem several years ago and I honestly can't remember how I resolved it. A quick search for "Android missing storage" shows a consensus that a factory reset usually fixes it, and if you have just installed LineageOS and don't mind starting all over again that's worth a try. Otherwise I can only suggest doing the reading to find another solution, or waiting for someone with a better memory to help. Sorry...
Edit: Strephon's advice is probably also a way to fix the size (he knows more than I do... ), but note that you'll lose all your data (photos, videos, etc.) in your device. You should never undertake any major update of a device without backing up first, so I'm guessing you've already covered this?
Edit 2: The TWRP option is in Advanced wipe - you have check boxes for system, data, cache, Dalvik & internal storage. When upgrading with a clean flash you wipe the first 4 but not internal storage so that at least you keep your photos on the device. This time you'll be doing the opposite - since it's the internal storage that's the problem, that's the only one you wipe.
@dahawthorne: Regardless of how much I may know, I don't always get it right.
From what I recall, formatting the internal storage is all he needs to do. However, if that doesn't work, the factory reset certainly will. The OP should back up everything onto his PC prior to performing either operation, because he will lose everything, as you note.
So after wiping and reimaging my phone, I found there is an option in TWRP to resize partitions. It's buried under the Wipe menu under Advanced => Repair or Change File System which is why I didn't see it before. I think my problem stemmed from a bad update Google pushed out when I was running the stock ROM. When I originally flashed Lineage it didn't automatically resize the partition like I assumed it would.
