Cant boot tab, Odin and heimdall cant recover it... - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I am not a noob to flashing or to android, but I am fairly new to this damned Galaxy Tab... A friends daughter had a small issue with her tab so she called verizon who had her do a bunch of things to it now it totally wont boot. it givs the "Samsung" screen, then the verizon splash screen but wont go any further. I can get it into download mode and i can get it into recovery, but Im seeing a lot of errors in recovery. I am attaching a pic of that...
I have spent the last two days searching all over for a way to get this darn thing running, eveywhere I read :If you can get to the download screen or into recovery it is easy to recover." Well Im guessing its not always so damn easy....
I have a TAR file that is the stock VZW files and I tried that via heimdall, no go... tried multiple ways, nothing. i had it at one time so the video wouldnt work, I could hear the bootup sounds, but couldnt see anything on the tab... could someone please help me out with this thing?
device is a Verizon branded SCHI800BKV
Here is my recovery screenshot...

do a wipe data/factory reset in stock recovery, after it ur device will fully bootup

I wish it was that easy.... here is what I get when i try that..
If you notice the empty line in the middle of the red text, the next line states, "Your storage is not prepared yet, use UI menu for format and reboot menus.
I have let it run at the verizon splash screen overnight just incase it was rebuilding Dalvik, but no go.... and of course all verizon tells me is "As old as this is, you would be better off buying the newer version. Should i ring one up for you?"
It seems to me, like the onboard memory is fragged, and not holding the data when I flash via either Odin or Heimdall...

Internal storage is broken.

crap. thats what I thought.... been reading the threads about using a SD card to run and have NO freaking clue how to do that stuff. good thing this isnt my device.

It has just become simpler! CM10 nightlies can be installed without modifications on an external storage card by creating an empty file activate_data_on_sdcard (the name is important) in the root of the card.

OK, i just grabbed the latest nightly and the Gapps, but as this tab is NOT rooted, nor does it have ClockworkMod recovery installed, how do i flash it? Just put a file with that name on the SD card along with the zip file for CM10? do i still have to partition the SD card? Damn I feel like a noob...:cyclops:

Well, we don't install CWM on the Tab, we install a kernel that has a recovery that can install unsigned zips from storage. The Overcome kernel is known to work. I believe there's a thread in General with links to the Overcome files.
Partition the card: 1 = /SDCARD, Primary FAT32, most of the capacity of the card (say 25 GB on a 32 GB card, or maybe 13 GB on a 16 GB card), 2 = /DATA, Primary Ext4, 2 or 4 GB, 3 = /CACHE, Primary Ext4, rest of the card.
Download the CM10 nightly and JB gapps and put them on the external card.
Create a file named activate_data_on_sdcard on the card.
Put the Tab into Download mode and flash the Overcome kernel as PDA with Odin. The Tab will not boot normally anymore after you've done this. Power off the Tab.
Boot it into recovery by powering it up while holding down Power on and Volume-up until you see the text Galaxy Tab. It should start the recovery.
Wipe data, cache, and Dalvik cache.
Go to the Install menu and select the option to install from storage. Select the nightly and flash it.
It may start to flash and then reboot into recovery. This should now be the CM10 recovery. Flash the nightly again.
Flash gapps for JB.
If all had gone well the Tab will boot and run from the external card.
Hm, I must have been doing this stuff too long now, because I find this whole process quite logical...

g1 partitioning help

ok so these forums have help me sooo much from rooting my g1 for the first time and upgrading my g1 to the max. But I've comed to a problem on partitioning my g1.
I am currently using cyanogenmod and I use amon ra's recovery 1.5.0 which I have found really easy to use.
So basically I'm trying to get a linux swap of 96mb and I belive a 512mb ext partition but when I do this on amon ra I chect on cosole by first typing su and then free to check my memory and my swap partition says 0? And I'm trying to see what I'm doing wrong?
What I basically do is I:
wipe
Format my sd via computer with swiss knife or bassic format tool
Plug in my card
Wipe again
Wipe ext partion
And then I do the ext/linux/fat32 partition thing
And then I do my flashing.
Am I doing something wrong? Or maybe taking too many steps? Lol
But if anybody could tell me what to do it would be good.
And again I don't mind starting out fresh.
I am going to assume your new...
And I am a bit of a smart a$$ so deal with it. It's also late and I'm hungry, so I'm a triple threat.
1. Welcome to the forums.
2. keep up to date on the programs...RA1.5.0 had a bug in it. It was replaced with RA1.5.1 in less than 8 hours.
Check for daily updates on everything you use.
3. Don't do it by hand...Amon RA 1.5.1 does all this for you. (has since like 1.3.9 I think)
Even walks you through it step be step.
Its under the heading PARTITION SDCARD (Can't miss it on the main screen. It's there on 1.5 too)
Know your Sdcard specs b4 proceeding.
It even upgrades your partitions...don't bother with apps2sd if your not on a class 4 or 6 card.
And yes you do want ext 4 if you have a class 4 or 6 card.
No I won't tell you how to tell the difference. Google will.
4. Not to sound like an a$$...oh wait I already put in that disclaimer...
Seriously are you learning about what your doing or are you following along blindly?
Just following along results in posts like "OMG I just F*ing Bricked my Phone trying that lame a$$ write up. How do I fix my phone!?!?"
Read up on the programs before you use them, and ask questions about how to do something before trying. Please.
Have a nice... ah who am I kidding...see ya!
Ok..
1. Thanks for the welcome
2. You didn't help much but still thanks.
3. I'm not that of a complete dumba$$ and I do try to stay up with the updates and stuff but I go to school full time and I work right after but thanks for the advise...
4. But what I was looking for was how to start out fresh with cyanogen and a partition on my phone because when I try it it doesn't show on console but the size on my sd does decrese.
But again thanks.

Do you have a userinit.sh setup to activate the swap on boot? Otherwise, you can try entering "swapon" in a terminal window and then "free" to see if you now have swap being utilized. Just having the partition does not enable swapping.
If you want to try to re-partition it one last time, I wrote a very simple excel program that walks you through the partitioning. I boot into recovery, and go to console. From there, just type the text exactly as written. There are 2 variables that you will type in, the swap and the actual size of the card. By typing those in, it will update the spreadsheet with the correct values to input. I have formatted quite a few this way and never had a problem that wasn't due to a bad SD card.
Anyway, this is what it looks like:

I guess in my cranky state you missed my point.
There is no reason to do any of the partitioning on another computer, or by hand. Amon Ra's recovery image does that operation with a little interaction from you.
Basically it does what speed.racer's script does, and it's already on your phone.
As for not seeing the partition information...
A fresh partition has nothing on it, so you will get a 0 when looking to see how much data it is storing.
Look again after you have booted up to the home screen.
Does that help?
Well its been like about 2 hours since i did the repartition and im sure that it would of have had taken up mem by now but it says 0 0 0 and
When i do the swap on thin it says to set swap priority?

[Q] Copy files onto phone while in recovery mode

So I screwed up my Galaxy S by trying to modify the images on framework res.api. The phone won't boot up now.
I can only go into recovery mode. How do I copy the original files to the phone so I don't have to do a full recovery?
Are there other alternative methods I can use?
I am really frustrated now and I hope I won't have to start all over again
The stupid nature of the Samsung Galaxy S recovery is that you have to put the update.zip on the Internal SD. The stock recovery has no way of letting you do this as you don't have root to mount the sdcard when using ADB.
So just go for a full flash... :\
just flash the phone again with Odin, on a good firmware
then you can do whatever you want with it after that.
You don't need to flash again.. the easy way: check the following > http://ip208-100-42-21.static.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=756627 and download the file for your ROM (if there is no file for your ROM, try with any for your model). Then if you cannot access to the internal SD through the recovery mode... go to the "apply update.zip".. in my case I got an error due to I didn't have any update.zip file BUT then I was able to acces de internal SD, so you can copy the file downloaded and apply it
Sorry for my bad english!
You should be able to create an update.zip with the same folder structure as your phone (/system/framework/) and replace the framework-res.apk with your original working one. Then use your recovery screen to apply this update.zip
Edit: Sorry I just realized you couldn't access your internal sd... dang.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I had to reflash the whole phone with the firmware thus losing all my settings and programs.
The case is I knew what file I messed up. I applied it through the update.zip. And there is no way to access the internal SD card (internal storage) so I cannot change the update.zip to anything else.
So from my understanding, for phones like Galaxy S which has a non removable internal SD card, there is no way, not even with third party software to access the internal storage so the update.zip can be modified and applied through the recovery mode? Sorry I'm still quite a noob after reading hundreds of threads...
If that's the case then it is quite very risky to attempt on any mods and this may not be the phone I want to keep
Is there a way to SWITCH app file saving from INTERNAL SD to EXTERNAL SD? Or at least make Recovery mode use update.zip from EXTERNAL SD? That would be very useful!
Thanks all...

This is one of the biggest flaw of the device. Unless for those who don't touch anything of the system at all...

[Q] Now running CM10; questions.

Thanks for verygreens detailed instructions ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2032364 ), a sacrificial EEE PC that had Ubuntu thrown on it to copy files to the correct SD partition, three different microSD cards ( Patriot 8GB class 4? No. Kingston 4GB class 4? No. Run to the store and buy a Sandisk 32gb Class 4? Yes!) ... I'm running and enjoying it.
Questions:
1. Is there a way to take a screen shot? Which leads me to question 2 (I wanted a screen cap the highlight what I'm seeing)...
2. At the home screen in portrait mode, the top 15% and bottom 15% of the screen seem unused. In landscape, the screen seems to be all used. Is this common?
3. I've installed "cm-10-20121231-UNOFFICIAL-ovation.zip"; of course there's bound to be updates. My concern is by repeating the install procedure, I will wipe the device clean and have to start-over with the "Here's my Gmail account, here's me going to the App Store and re-installing my 15 programs" etc.
I believe I read there's a way to book into CWM instead of directly into CM10; that would allow me to insert any updated zip and "install zip from sd card" -- I just don't want to lose all my settings.

1. Yes, you can take screenshots. Go to settings/system/power menu and put a check mark in screenshots. The you can hold the power button and the screenshot choice is there.
2. That must be the stock launcher doing that. I use AdwEx and it does not do that. Try a third party launcher.
3. You can do what is called a dirty flash where you flash the update directly over the top of the old one. All apps and settings remain. Just download your new zip with the HD+ to your sdcard media partition and boot to recovery with the power menu. Choose the zip and flash it with no wiping and everything remains.

Leap,
Thanks... I got the screen shot working - this is the stock launcher; on top, from the bottom of the Google-Voice widget to the top of the weather widget is dead space.
And on the bottom, from the bottom row of icons to the menu bar, it's dead space. I bought the Nova Launcher app when it was $0.25 and use that for booting without CM10; maybe I'll ply it on top of CM10.

[Q] Galaxy S GT-I9000 trapped in Bootloop after StockRomFlashing from CM10.3RC2

Hi there.
Two days ago my GT-9000 got broken.
I had CM10.1.3RC2 installed since a few months and then it suddenly started to reboot and everytime I did something with that phone it rebooted again and again.
So I decided to flash CM10.1.3 stable. I did it like mentioned in the How to flash CM10.3. on ( hxxp://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_galaxysmtd ). I am Linux user and since familiar with Heimdall and because I did the flashing procedure a few times before I am also familiar with that.
Nevertheless when I wanted to install CM10.3. the installation progress started and after 2 to 3 seconds (!) the system reboot and I was again with CM10.1.3RC2. So nothing changed.
Then I was confused.
I reinstalled the CWM (the one from the How to Page) and wiped all data/factoryreset and also wiped the cache. Then tried again the reinstallation of CM10.1.3 and after a few seconds I was again in 10.1.3RC2
So I decided that something was horrible wrong. I read about stock Roms and tried to flash a JVU, so Gingerbread 2.3.6.. I got the StockRom and since Odin is more easier with that I switched to Windows and did the stock rom without repartition, like mentioned in one of the Threads here. Afterwards I tried to reboot and got stuck in a Bootloop without the samsung animation.
After a second reboot the recovery mode said, that it is not able to mount /data . So I reflashed the stock rom with repartition, because I thought, that the filesystems are different and the flashing progress did not work.
After this flashing progress I got stuck in another Bootloop with the samsung animation for first use of the galaxy S. Also the recovery mode started before and said again, that it was not possible to mount /data .
Then I thought: "screw you mobile" and reflashed the Replicants CWM from the How To and tried to install CM10.3. stable, again.
The installation took a few seconds and again was my System the old Cm10.3.RC2 with all the data still on the sdcard. So all in all nothing changed besides the design of my Desktop. Also it is now not possible to do something with my SIM-Card. The Simtool-app disappears in the first few seconds after the system is up.
Also nice to mention is, that I was not able to mount the sd-card in the recovery mode severall times and only several flashes of the CWM made it working to push something with ADB on my SD-Card. Also Installation from an external SD-Card did not change anything.
So can you help me out? Is this still a software issue? Is this a hardware problem? Should I buy a new phone?
Thanks in advance.

when downgrading its better to use PIT file to re-partition when flashing stock ROM, so take a look at this guide and IF you want you can follow it after you have also taken a backup of your data either via nandroid or via mounting to USB storage and copying your entire sd card to PC . If you like clean fresh start, format SD card after that, if not just flash as is after wipes. . If you are more familiar with heimdall that use a rescue kit for heimdall from here

I tried this manual, I also downloaded everything mentioned, although I may occassionaly have some of these data due my prior trys.
After the first flash I saw in the reboot, that still /data failed to mount. But due to the manual I didn't care. (This may be the main error though)
After the second flash I got stuck in a bootloop and followed the instruction on Problem number 8.
After flashing with Odin3 v1 without re-partition but with the pitfile I still was stuck in a bootloop. Even if I flashed again with semaphores CWM 2.7.4 I got stucked in a bootloop.
I am currently trying to download the further solutions, like the recovery kits. I intuitively choose Froyo 2.2 JPU. After that I don't know what to do and I don't think, that I get this damn phone working again.
That's what happened:
After installing the recovery Froyo 2.2 JPU the recovery mode said:
E: can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1
(No such file or directory)
E:copy_dbdata_media:Can't mount SDCARD:
your storage not prepared yet. please use UI menu for format and rebot actions.
copy default media content failed
I read on problem 13 ( hxp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=30415128#post30415128 ) on the other pages and downloaded the Speedmod Gingerbread Kernel K17-3 for Odin.
After Flashing the Speedmod I wasn't able to get into recovery mode.
I think I need a new phone....

If you can still get into download mode, its still possible to use your External SD card when internal SD card get corrupted.

Yeah, I read about it but I trade the time I spend and the money I could have earned in that time .
I decide this evening whatever I will do: Buy a big SD-Card and do what you mentioned, buy only a mainboard of an samsung I9000 and build it in, solder the sd-chip myself, if possible, get a new used or get a new one.
in the last two cases: Do you have any advice for me?

if you can get a scrap mother board or used one or a new one SD card comes with it, so its a simple solution, switching mother boards , Now removing the inand chip needs a lot of technical skill and had been done by only a few technicians, as you need to know exact amount of heat to apply and also same problem when attaching it back on the board . Take a look here at the inand storage and where to buy here

[Q] Help! Can't mount sd-ext

Hi, I'm actually new to an Android device, but the HTC vivid I got from AT&T just behaved horrendously (battery dies in less than 2 hours, input method constantly stops working, any of the touches on the screen are frequently recognized as dragging down the status bar, can't pick-up or make phone calls very often, changes the screen brightness by itself like crazy if set auto-brightness, etc) so I decide to make some change.
The ROM I am currently using: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2420985
The problem that I have now is that in system settings->storage, I can see my ~30GB external SD card. The SD card works fine if you plug it to a PC. But no apps on the phone can access this SD card. I was using a CWM recovery, and now a TWRP recovery, both give me an error message saying something like "unable to mount sd-ext".
These are what I see in system settings.

I will explain what I did with my phone during the past 3 days to give you an idea of what may go wrong.
First I tried to root the device with some "one-key rooting" software I found online, but it failed. Then I learned that I have to unlock the bootloader of the phone. So I went to htcdev.com and followed the instructions, but my Win8.1 computer could not recognized the phone when the phone was in fastboot mode (although I could see "FASTBOOT USB" on the phone, the computer just said "unrecognized device" or something). So I borrowed my roommate's Macbook Pro, and successfully unlocked the bootloader. Then the "one-key rooting" software worked, and my deviced was rooted. By that time the storage worked without any problem.
Then I tried to install a ROM made by "Team Hydra" on my phone (I can't find the original post now but I noticed a new thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2524934, which I suppose is an update of the ROM), but I didn't know about the "S-ON" status of my phone, so apparently I can't boot my phone to system. At this time I had CWM recovery on my phone. So I took out the battery, thought it was the ROM's issue.
I found that I could flash a ROM by copying the ROM zip files into my external SD card, and use CWM recovery. So I tried this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2026675 which is an official Cyanogenmod nightly version. Still no luck because I didn't flash boot.img. Then I read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2036710 and understood the boot.img issue. I successfully installed the ROM, but found that the phone did not recognize either my internal SD or my external SD, so most of the apps couldn't run, even the camera.
Then I found this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2420985 and noticed in the changelog there was a "Fixed SD Card" update. So I installed this newer version of ROM (also using the external SD). I felt very strange that the recovery could install the ROM with the external SD, but the operating system can't use the SD card (same as the snapshots shown above, except that the sdcard(FAT) was also "Unavailable").
Then I found another post online, and tried the method: I flashed TWRP recovery on my phone, and tapped "mount". Then I plugged the phone to my PC, and format the 8GB partition which seemed to be somehow corrupted. After that the internal SD card worked fine, and it is what I have now. The external SD can't be used by any of the apps, and if I reboot to recovery, and try to mount sd-ext, I can get a message saying "unable to mount sd-ext".
Ok now I got really confused, and the posts and threads I found online are not quite the same as the problem I am having. I wish to get help here. Thank you.
