[Q] Copy files onto phone while in recovery mode - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I screwed up my Galaxy S by trying to modify the images on framework res.api. The phone won't boot up now.
I can only go into recovery mode. How do I copy the original files to the phone so I don't have to do a full recovery?
Are there other alternative methods I can use?
I am really frustrated now and I hope I won't have to start all over again

The stupid nature of the Samsung Galaxy S recovery is that you have to put the update.zip on the Internal SD. The stock recovery has no way of letting you do this as you don't have root to mount the sdcard when using ADB.
So just go for a full flash... :\

just flash the phone again with Odin, on a good firmware
then you can do whatever you want with it after that.

You don't need to flash again.. the easy way: check the following > http://ip208-100-42-21.static.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=756627 and download the file for your ROM (if there is no file for your ROM, try with any for your model). Then if you cannot access to the internal SD through the recovery mode... go to the "apply update.zip".. in my case I got an error due to I didn't have any update.zip file BUT then I was able to acces de internal SD, so you can copy the file downloaded and apply it
Sorry for my bad english!

You should be able to create an update.zip with the same folder structure as your phone (/system/framework/) and replace the framework-res.apk with your original working one. Then use your recovery screen to apply this update.zip
Edit: Sorry I just realized you couldn't access your internal sd... dang.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I had to reflash the whole phone with the firmware thus losing all my settings and programs.
The case is I knew what file I messed up. I applied it through the update.zip. And there is no way to access the internal SD card (internal storage) so I cannot change the update.zip to anything else.
So from my understanding, for phones like Galaxy S which has a non removable internal SD card, there is no way, not even with third party software to access the internal storage so the update.zip can be modified and applied through the recovery mode? Sorry I'm still quite a noob after reading hundreds of threads...
If that's the case then it is quite very risky to attempt on any mods and this may not be the phone I want to keep
Is there a way to SWITCH app file saving from INTERNAL SD to EXTERNAL SD? Or at least make Recovery mode use update.zip from EXTERNAL SD? That would be very useful!
Thanks all...

i would like the same thing too
perhaps we can persuade the developers for ClockworkMod Recovery to include that in their update.zip

This is one of the biggest flaw of the device. Unless for those who don't touch anything of the system at all...

DreaIMG.nbh System Fail

So I am trying to root a G1 which has 1.6 on it. I applied the RC29 NBH File to the SD card after reformatting in FAT32. Held the camera and power button and went to apply the reimage. I keep coming up with failure. Here is a photo:

I have tried the following and have to luck.
-Redownload the .nbh file from multiple sources
-Download the RC30 and tried to apply that instead
-purchased a new SD card and card reader
-Renamed the file DREAIMG.nbh and DreaIMG.nbh
-Checked the extension .nbh making sure it wasn't there twice
-I have tried multiple time hoping it would just work also
I now have a phone that will only pull up to the tri-color screen and if i choose, it will try to load the nbh file again, but i get a fail every time. I can not get any farther into the phone than the bootloader screen.
All these things and still no luck. I have my MT3G root so I'm not new at this.

Ah i see your issue. WHEN DOWNLOADING DONT COPY IT TO YOUR SD CARD.
Download it to your desktop first. Then move it to your sd. Name it DREAIMG.nbh then give it a try
The issue is it becomes corrupt when you download it directly to your sd

Also another thing you might try. Back up the contents of your SD card, reformat it, then put the DREAIMG.nbh on the card by itself. For some reason, sometimes it doesn't play well with other files because it has to be indexed first on the card.
Good luck!

[MOD] native swap

hey guys im making this thread cus androidboss dint know how to do this and im mkaing it easier for him(might help others too so )
I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DEAD SDCRADS PHONES LAPTOPS DESKTOPS AND ANYTHING ELSE
requirements
-windows computer
-phone with swiftdroid or any rom that supports inti.d boot scripts
-recovery 5.0.2.3
1. backup all sdcard stuff to computer.
2. wipe all data from the sdcard. after that use this to remove all partitions from sdcard( if you do not have any other partitions on sdcard skip to the end bellow the last picture)
http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm
the pics will look may look different cus im using a older version
mine looks like this
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
to remove all the other partitions
when all is done click apply at the top lefthand corner. at the end after it refreshes make sure there is only one partition left . the FAT32 partition.
so now the card has no data put it in the phone and boot into recovery(5.0.2.3). there go to advance>partition sdcard>EXT size 2M(2M if you dont want a ext partition but if you want then the size is up to you )>swap size 256m
power down the phone and put back data into the sdcard. now enjoy swap
well this is my first thread so hope it helps!!
hahaha thank you
every much bs828 !!!
You helped me a lot!!!
Thanks a lot mate.
Edit: will use this on my girls gt540.
These typos was sent from my Nexus S [I9023]
custom rom??
I use this method more than 2 or 3 month, thats nothing new. Mur4ik Swiftdroid roms use this method, automatically find&use SD card's swap partition.
Before that, i made a video for my 2.1 Ultimate rom, how to partition SD card under windows to use swap&ext partition. (I use swapper for swap and joe's autoapp2SD in my ROM) Sometimes it not possible because compatibility problems between win&card readers but newer CWM recoveries able to partition cards.
yeah like i said androidboss did not know how to do this so i made this. others may also find is useful so why not make it public ??

hi, tnx for guide... folowing it i found out that me sdcard was formated like super floppy, maybe that was cose of sdcard unmounting.
LoL hope it helped
Just tried it, works like a charm
Im quite a newbie in this, how exactly does swap and ext porticions work and what do they do ?
the memory card you are using is in a fat32 format so by partition it to let say a ext3 file type you can store apps on it(if im not wrong the phone's memory is also ext3) swap works as addition external ram used to run apps
Where can I find recovery 5.0.2.3?

I'm running CM9 Android 4.0.3
http://mikegapinski.androidus.pl/android-4-0-ice-cream-sandwich-aosp/
I've done everything like the tutorial says, but I had older clockwork recovery 2.5 I guess something like that, and I've done the same thing in recovery selected advance>partition sdcard> EXT3 and selected 2gb then selected 256MB Swap, but when I run the OS and enter free in terminal it says swap 0.
What could have caused the problem?
Thanks in advance!

look in root explorer (or any root file manager), in folder etc/init.d
if there isnt script called 07swapon, the swap wont active. and afaik, mike's ics doesnt have this script. u must add it manually.
Yes take 1 from any rom
How can I open *.img files so I can get the 07swapon file?
Can you give me the download link for swapon file?

well how much space do those apps take? are you putting them on sd? sdext? internal memory? you can use cmtd if you want more room for apps in iternal, you can partition sd card to put apps in ext3 or ext4 if you'd like. you can move them to the fat32 partition but they would be much slower
as for gtalk, just google search "googletalk.apk download" push it with adb or use a file explorer to download it to your phone

thanks for the .apk now i just need to figure out how to partition th sd card
ps. i decided to try out CM5, so far it is a lot faster than the rom i had originally flashed. will keep an eye on memory issues.
you have amonra recovery right? back up exerything from sd card to pc, boot to recovery choose partition sd, choose 512mb and no swap, the rest fat32 (this would be my preference but do as you please) wait until finnished, change ext2 to ext3... wait (you can stop here but I prefer ext4)
now put what you want back on sdcard. I beleieve your rom has the ability to automaticly move apps to ext, check in settings... if not that you may have to enable it via terminal

thank you for the quick tutorial, with cm5 i now have 40.9mb of phone storage(after installing facebook) and 1.77gb on external card. i dont see installing many other apps as this will be a backup phone to my current Galaxy Tab P6800, plus i also have a Galaxy S phone to use as back up as well.

Cant boot tab, Odin and heimdall cant recover it...

So I am not a noob to flashing or to android, but I am fairly new to this damned Galaxy Tab... A friends daughter had a small issue with her tab so she called verizon who had her do a bunch of things to it now it totally wont boot. it givs the "Samsung" screen, then the verizon splash screen but wont go any further. I can get it into download mode and i can get it into recovery, but Im seeing a lot of errors in recovery. I am attaching a pic of that...
I have spent the last two days searching all over for a way to get this darn thing running, eveywhere I read :If you can get to the download screen or into recovery it is easy to recover." Well Im guessing its not always so damn easy....
I have a TAR file that is the stock VZW files and I tried that via heimdall, no go... tried multiple ways, nothing. i had it at one time so the video wouldnt work, I could hear the bootup sounds, but couldnt see anything on the tab... could someone please help me out with this thing?
device is a Verizon branded SCHI800BKV
Here is my recovery screenshot...

do a wipe data/factory reset in stock recovery, after it ur device will fully bootup
I wish it was that easy.... here is what I get when i try that..
If you notice the empty line in the middle of the red text, the next line states, "Your storage is not prepared yet, use UI menu for format and reboot menus.
I have let it run at the verizon splash screen overnight just incase it was rebuilding Dalvik, but no go.... and of course all verizon tells me is "As old as this is, you would be better off buying the newer version. Should i ring one up for you?"
It seems to me, like the onboard memory is fragged, and not holding the data when I flash via either Odin or Heimdall...
Internal storage is broken.
crap. thats what I thought.... been reading the threads about using a SD card to run and have NO freaking clue how to do that stuff. good thing this isnt my device.
It has just become simpler! CM10 nightlies can be installed without modifications on an external storage card by creating an empty file activate_data_on_sdcard (the name is important) in the root of the card.

OK, i just grabbed the latest nightly and the Gapps, but as this tab is NOT rooted, nor does it have ClockworkMod recovery installed, how do i flash it? Just put a file with that name on the SD card along with the zip file for CM10? do i still have to partition the SD card? Damn I feel like a noob...:cyclops:
Well, we don't install CWM on the Tab, we install a kernel that has a recovery that can install unsigned zips from storage. The Overcome kernel is known to work. I believe there's a thread in General with links to the Overcome files.
Partition the card: 1 = /SDCARD, Primary FAT32, most of the capacity of the card (say 25 GB on a 32 GB card, or maybe 13 GB on a 16 GB card), 2 = /DATA, Primary Ext4, 2 or 4 GB, 3 = /CACHE, Primary Ext4, rest of the card.
Download the CM10 nightly and JB gapps and put them on the external card.
Create a file named activate_data_on_sdcard on the card.
Put the Tab into Download mode and flash the Overcome kernel as PDA with Odin. The Tab will not boot normally anymore after you've done this. Power off the Tab.
Boot it into recovery by powering it up while holding down Power on and Volume-up until you see the text Galaxy Tab. It should start the recovery.
Wipe data, cache, and Dalvik cache.
Go to the Install menu and select the option to install from storage. Select the nightly and flash it.
It may start to flash and then reboot into recovery. This should now be the CM10 recovery. Flash the nightly again.
Flash gapps for JB.
If all had gone well the Tab will boot and run from the external card.
Hm, I must have been doing this stuff too long now, because I find this whole process quite logical...

[Q] Help! Can't mount sd-ext

Hi, I'm actually new to an Android device, but the HTC vivid I got from AT&T just behaved horrendously (battery dies in less than 2 hours, input method constantly stops working, any of the touches on the screen are frequently recognized as dragging down the status bar, can't pick-up or make phone calls very often, changes the screen brightness by itself like crazy if set auto-brightness, etc) so I decide to make some change.
The ROM I am currently using: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2420985
The problem that I have now is that in system settings->storage, I can see my ~30GB external SD card. The SD card works fine if you plug it to a PC. But no apps on the phone can access this SD card. I was using a CWM recovery, and now a TWRP recovery, both give me an error message saying something like "unable to mount sd-ext".
These are what I see in system settings.

I will explain what I did with my phone during the past 3 days to give you an idea of what may go wrong.
First I tried to root the device with some "one-key rooting" software I found online, but it failed. Then I learned that I have to unlock the bootloader of the phone. So I went to htcdev.com and followed the instructions, but my Win8.1 computer could not recognized the phone when the phone was in fastboot mode (although I could see "FASTBOOT USB" on the phone, the computer just said "unrecognized device" or something). So I borrowed my roommate's Macbook Pro, and successfully unlocked the bootloader. Then the "one-key rooting" software worked, and my deviced was rooted. By that time the storage worked without any problem.
Then I tried to install a ROM made by "Team Hydra" on my phone (I can't find the original post now but I noticed a new thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2524934, which I suppose is an update of the ROM), but I didn't know about the "S-ON" status of my phone, so apparently I can't boot my phone to system. At this time I had CWM recovery on my phone. So I took out the battery, thought it was the ROM's issue.
I found that I could flash a ROM by copying the ROM zip files into my external SD card, and use CWM recovery. So I tried this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2026675 which is an official Cyanogenmod nightly version. Still no luck because I didn't flash boot.img. Then I read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2036710 and understood the boot.img issue. I successfully installed the ROM, but found that the phone did not recognize either my internal SD or my external SD, so most of the apps couldn't run, even the camera.
Then I found this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2420985 and noticed in the changelog there was a "Fixed SD Card" update. So I installed this newer version of ROM (also using the external SD). I felt very strange that the recovery could install the ROM with the external SD, but the operating system can't use the SD card (same as the snapshots shown above, except that the sdcard(FAT) was also "Unavailable").
Then I found another post online, and tried the method: I flashed TWRP recovery on my phone, and tapped "mount". Then I plugged the phone to my PC, and format the 8GB partition which seemed to be somehow corrupted. After that the internal SD card worked fine, and it is what I have now. The external SD can't be used by any of the apps, and if I reboot to recovery, and try to mount sd-ext, I can get a message saying "unable to mount sd-ext".
Ok now I got really confused, and the posts and threads I found online are not quite the same as the problem I am having. I wish to get help here. Thank you.

Also I find my bluetooth can't be turned on...
