Voice and 2G/3G connection every now and then falls away. - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Voice and 2G/3G connection every now and then falls away.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have the following problem.
Hi I have a plan with extra fast with endless online. But every now and then suddenly falls away and my connection voice and 2G/3G can I just restore it in airplane mode to turn back and pick up.
Are there more people with same problem? I have an G1. The SIM card only 8 weeks old.
I like to hear from you.

I have experienced this before also.

Happens to me fairly often too.

Exactly just had this happen to me today while in the grocery store. Rebooted and it was back, but still weird.

I actually used to have that problem too, where data just went away. Rebooting worked, but then one day a reboot didn't work, next day I got 3g. Then I decided to go to hero roms and haven't had the problem since, so I think that hero does something that fixes the network

Sometimes i go from a 3G to G then ut decides to go to edge. There are even times when it doesnt connect to data at all.

you go in and out of coverage area's and that's what happen's, t-mobile's 3g network isn't as expansive as they'd have you believe, plenty of pockets/holes throughout, even in places where it should be all 3g.
how is this post not moved/deleted/flamed yet for being in the dev's section :-D

Yeah, but I mean that I would have data then it would turn off and it would turn back on in the same place after a reboot.
And I think most of us just finally gave up on keeping questions out of the development sections, it is a lost cause. At least for me it is

Well yes staying on tmo might as well be a lost cause...i struggle to stay on 3G and even on data period, i doubt verizon or sprint would give me these troubles...

It's not a coverage problem, It can happen at the top floor of my school where usually I would have full bars, and as said it's fixed by switching into Airplane mode and then back to normal mode.
I think it happens when it's in my pocket and the coverage strength goes up and down a lot, maybe it gets a bit confused lol (Although it didn't happen on the stock firmware, running Cyanogen 4.2.7.1)

Its not only T-mobile, I too have that problem that too being in India on Airtel Also had these problems at National Roaming... Means When I was Out of local Network too... So its not the Problem of Coverage...

There's an open bug for this particular problem
Cf:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=2845

I've had this problem since day one on my G1, it doesn't matter what ROM I'm running, it even did it with the stock ROM.
It seems Android isn't so great at reconnecting you to the network once you've lost signal. Ideally you need a process running in the background to reconnect you - think 'No Signal Alert' in the market with an option to scan for networks then reconnect you.
I've got a shortcut on one of my home screens to the network operators scan page as I have to do this most days
Good old T-Mobile coverage..

Well with the rumors of Sprint and T-Mobile merging hopefully they will band together and give us better coverage. 3G and or 4G all day and all night would be HUGE!!!
If any big CEO's is reading this from either of these companies, PLEASE MAKE THIS HAPPEN!!

HA Ha Ha Ha............ NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!!!!!
We would never ever take that network over....Ours maybe spotty but we WILL have the fastest 3G Network................4G is a joke...if you look at the fine print 4G is their goal but isn't even possible yet....DT (t-moble Mother company) over seas was looking into buying sprint but they're in way too much debt....issues from this post sounds like simcard or issues with the IHLR (our backdoor) so call t-mobile to make sure it cannot be fix on our end or... it can be a bad radio download or flash...I have 1 bar on 3G and 2 on edge but i have never had the issues stated in this post so coverage is not it!!! hope this helps!

I also have issues with signal being dropped or getting hung. My G1 will be sitting in the same place for an hour or longer and sometimes it just stops transfering data. I'll check it by going to the market and it can take a few min before anything happens. Sometimes when I download an app from the market it will take up to 5 or 10 min to see anything transfer. I haven't noticed any issues with taking or making calls but data transfers are touch and go. Now sometimes I won't have a problem all day then the next day...in the same spot with great coverage....data transfers just seem to be sketchy. I don't know if it's t-mobile or the roms but something is quirky.

Actually i have seen that happening with the market too but only with a theme added to the rom...must be something with background data transfers and the theme using too much memory....but is not an issue at all on non rooted phones....i checked at work!!!

curious

Problem solved but questions

My Kaiser has been working fine now for about a year. Recently traveled from one city to another. When I got off the plane noticed that I couldn't dial out nor surf the web. I also noticed that the touch screen was pretty unresponsive. While driving home from the airport and playing with my phone (about 30 minutes or so) shut off the 3G part of the phone and noticed that I could dial out. The phone was in Edge mode and it somewhat worked but the touchscreen was still kind of unresponsive. Called and opened a service request with AT&T. After a couple of calls and some "detail" checking I was told that my SIM was trashed. They said that maybe it was trashed going thru the airport X-Ray machine. (odd to me). Wondering if somehow there was an attempt to hijack my SIM remotely (BT?) or am I being paranoid? I recieved a new SIM today and I had it turned on. All appears well at this time.
I had the same issue with my old Sonyericsson. Traveling from Indianapolis to Denver, when I arrived the messaging and internet was really buggy. They told me that my sim card wasn't compatible with their network. That seemed really odd to me too. However, they gave me a new one and once it was registered on the network everything was cool.
Long story short - I don't think anybody was trying to hack your phone via bluetooth or anything like that. There are just minor quirks in the network when traveling long distances... probably from the network being made up of smaller ones that were simply acquired through buy-outs.

Traveling long distances will not "trash" your SIM, I go to HKG every year...no problems...that is a farther distance than Indianapolis to Denver...

Nobody said anything about the distance itself causing issues. What I said was that not all areas of att's networks are up to par, so older sim's may not work everywhere.
I don't work for att or anything but this has been my experience.
Thanks all for your responses. My 3G is still working in the Midwest. BTW my SIM card was working fine for almost a year (when I purchased Tilt). I also have traveled to the same place in FL a "few" times this past year with no SIM issues. One thing though is that 3G is not available yet where I travel to FL. (everytime I go there I can only get the Edge network).
It's funny... I've been on 3 round-trip flights since buying my Tilt. After each flight, the phone started acting buggy. Laggy, screen not refreshing when it should, programs refusing to run, etc.
A hard reset and restoring from my latest backup resolved all the issues each time. So, it seems that (at least in my case) the SD card is fine, but memory may be getting trashed in the phone. Of course, I'm blaming it on the x-ray process.
Next time I fly, I plan to turn the phone off completely before going thru screening to see if that makes a difference. Anyone else notice odd things happening after a plane trip?
I had a similar problem in the UK, although didn't actually involve travelling!
When I got my new Kaiser through O2 UK, I had upgraded from my old Wizard. I swapped SIM's and everything was fine. 3G was in operation in my part of the world at the time and it worked spot-on.
Then, after 2 weeks, 3G suddenly stopped working. GPRS was OK (no EDGE here!) but just couldn't get 3G signal. On startup, the 3G icon would appear, the signal strength would then drop to nothing, and would then change to a 'G'.
O2 said that my SIM was not 3G compatible - strange how it was working before though! They sent me a new SIM and everything's been fine since.
What I believe happened in my case is that they had upgraded the network in my area to HSDPA but hadn't activated it at that time. I believe the changeover is what made my older SIM suddenly incompatible.
HSDPA became active about 3 days after receiving my new SIM and my signal etc. has been fine ever since.
So, possibly when you guys have travelled, you've actually visited places where the network has been upgraded making your SIM incompatible there?
Also, have you tried manually searching for networks? If you're in a foreign country, your phone may be continually scanning for networks which will undoubtedly slow it down and make the screen unresponsive?

Phone shows full service but I don't receive calls

Sometimes people call me and get a message saying my phone is off or out of service. But when I look at it, it often shows 4 bars of service..
When I call someone, the problem disappears temporarily, and I start receiving calls again (and I receive all the SMS's I was supposed to get at once), only to appear again later for no reason (a soft reset also solves it). It's not related to location, it also happens when I spend the day at home (where I get a strong signal).
I don't think it's a operator problem either, since my operator is known for it's good services, and other people who use "normal" phones never had such a problem.
I tried 3 different ROMs (dutty's hybrid, Hyperdragon and AthineOS) and 3 different radios (dutty's radio (1.65 something), hyperdragon's (1.70 something), and eMo radio). Right now I'm using AthineOS with hyperdragon III's radio, and almost no programs installed..
This problem happens both in 3G and EDGE mode.
Anything I can do about it?
Send it in for repair?
Seems you tried all you could...
Don't think I can send it for repair, since it's an AT&T Tilt and I'm not even in the US..
Guess I'm outta luck then
Anyone else have any ideas?
have you tried the sim in another handset, sounds like a network problem to me.
3G Network
Are you using 3G Network?
Sometime I use 3G band and even It show good signal I loose phone calls.
I changed to GSM and no phone calls loose.
This happens in São Paulo/Brazil but...
EDIT: Sorry. Now I saw that you reported this problem also using GSM band.
Thanks.
I am not sure if you're using your US SIM card in a foreign country?
Maybe you just forgot to enable INTERNATIONAL ROAMING before you left ... ?
I'm having the same problem
I seem to have started with the same problem about a week ago. A couple people complained that they called me but it rang twice and went to voicemail - My phone never rang. However, after I made a call (or apparently did something to "wakeup" the phone), I would get the voicemail notification (2 hours later).
I tried reseating the SIM card, but then it went to "SIM Card Missing". I did a hard reset, but that didn't help. I took it back to AT&T and they replaced the SIM Card. That seemed to work again, and certainly would have been a convenient fix (bad SIM card - too easy). So I've just spent all weekend reloading all the apps, but now it's happening again!!
The symptoms are; After I reboot the device, I can receive one or two calls, then it doesn't ring anymore (the caller hears 2 rings then it goes to voicemail). If I cycle the Phone radio button in the Comm Manager, or cycle power, it comes back to life for 1 call, then craps out again.
I'm just using the standard AT&T ROM (without the Bloatware after this past reset) and the standard/default radio version 1.27.12.11
The only thing that I have noticed that seems different lately is that the "Comm Manager" task is always running when I look at the running programs (which I don't think it used to) I had also recently installed Garmin XT.
The device is of course 1 yr + 2 weeks (so I assume just out of warranty)
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
Hmmm,
what I would try, is, to just make a hard reset, load only my contacts to the phone and run it for a while to monitor its "Incalling" behavior. If everything seems to be fine, I would go ahead and start installing an application, then monitor my device again for a while, if everything is fine I will go ahead install the next application ... and so on. That is just to make sure that no 3rd party application causes this problems.
BTW:
I don't think that GARMIN causes this problem. I used to run Garmin on my HTC too (v5.0) until I came accross SYGIC McGuider (which works much better and card scrolling is much smoother than Garmin).
Well,
to come back to the point: if you get the same problems without loading any 3rd party application on your device, then I would recommend trying another ROM (best advice: go with the HTC stock ROM). If it also happens with the other ROM then it might be hardware related and difficult to fix.
Thanks - I knew that's what I should do, I just didn't want to do it after having spent all weekend reloading and configuring it. I thought I had read somewhere about Garmin having to have the phone radio on to work, so I was hoping there was a setting somewhere that I was missing that was powering the radio down. But..... I suppose it's time to go back to common sense and just do the reset
So far it seems to be working now. I'll give it a few days with just the basics and then start reloading one at a time.
Thanks for the quick response!
Spoke too soon
looks like I spoke too soon, it's doing it again - seems like it was fine for about 3 hours, but now .....
guess it's time to try my luck with AT&T - time to see how good their customer service is

Well, I'm experiencig totally same stuff here. I don't know whats really going on. I've NEVER before had such or even simialr problem.
Ive installed stock HTC ROM. And its going again.
One question. Are you using Opera Mini maybe?

no, I was just using the default browser.
I've got nothing installed on it at this point so I'm guessing it's hardware related.
Over the last couple months I had been experiencing some strange battery drainage (not related to the GPS issues). I don't know if that was a symptom or not. It just seems like the radio is going to sleep somehow - it wakes up for a little while if I sync my email, cycle the radio via comm manager, or cycle the power.
Anyone know if there is a setting somewhere that controls that? (sure would be nice if it were that simple)
The AT&T store was basically useless, all they did was give me the phone number for the warranty department (but since I'm 2 weeks past warranty, he doesn't think they'll help me), and of course offer to upgrade me to the Fuze for $375 - no thanks!
I've had the same issue (I think). I too think that it seems to happen when I have a 3G data connection active and moving back to GPRS (non 3G) seems to make it better....
I'm on a standard UK ROM and using BTMobile as a provider.
I was driving down the motorway the other day and overtook a friend. He rang me and went straight to voicemail. I then got a text to say that I had a voicemail and rang him back.
I was running TomTom Traffic at the time so would have had a data session enabled....
I think its something to do with the data session sometimes not letting a call through but can't put my finger on anything and certainly can't find an option to change any settings...
Also, even at home, I'm constantly picking up my phone to see that it "has no signal" and the exclamation mark is displayed - so calls aren't coming through - but it then connects and shows a three-bar strength signal. Don't understand why it keeps dropping out, but I get a 3G connection at the front of my house and an ordinary G connection at the back and I think that it sometimes to stay connected to the 3G connection for data even when the phone signal is very poor and it would be better dropping that and connecting at "old" GPRS speed...
Same on the train on the west coast main line out of London. I think having the 3G turned on causes the phone signal to drop out completely more than when 3G is turned off, as the phone tries to hang on to the signal of a 3G cell and doesn't successfully switch over to the next "non 3G" cell whilst in a call.
have you tried a new radio such as NIKI's?
well, AT&T warranty was even less than useless. Home phone, Internet, and Wireless all through AT&T and the best they can do is "see if they could get me a deal on a new phone" or refer me to HTC technical support. Nice customer service AT&T!!!
HTC technical support was actually trying to be helpful, once she found out I already did a hard reset, she referred me to their warranty group. They looked up the S/N and it's still under their warranty (I guess theirs is 15 months after manufacture date). Now the only problem is I have to send it in to them to see if it's covered under warranty, and of course be willing to go without my phone for 2 weeks (and pay them a yet to be determined amount if they decide it's not under warranty).
I'd like to try a different radio, but looks like there's too much for me to read up on - I need to get the device fixed, I've already lost too much time with it being messed up and me screwing with it.
Update
so this morning I was ready to throw in the towel and send the device back to HTC. At least they were willing to help me out, unlike AT&T.
I get to work, and of course the phone seems to be working (which isn't unusual, it works for a little while then craps out). Come lunch time, it's still working (now this is unusual, it must be a fluke, I'll give a couple more hours before I package it up). 4:00 and it's still working! Now I'm starting to wonder if it's got to do with the cell towers near my house (and the AT&T store since it did it for them too).
I email my buddy who lives about 1/2 mile away and also has a Tilt just to see if he's had any similar problems. He calls me back laughing. There's 5 People in his office with the exact same problem (and not all Tilts either).
So to make a short story long....... it appears to be a problem with AT&T, NOT the device (but Thank You very much AT&T for the incredible customer care you demonstrated and for trying to screw me into buying new devices for outrageous prices)
So at this point, I'm not sure if it's that AT&T has fixed the issue across the board, or if it was the "Resync the routing" that the online chat person tried last night that finally propagated across the network (I assume so that AT&T can find my phone in order to route the calls to me).
I guess we'll see if it does the same thing when I get back closer to home tonight, but I'm relieved that it appears to be fixed.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions! Now I have a little more time to read about how I can screw up my phone on my own schedule - all the practice of resetting it and reinstalling everything, and seeing how much faster it is has inspired me

I didn't tried asking AT&T for a new sim card. but I will call them to change the sim card. Does anybody know how to disable the 3G function?
Just a "me too..."
Hello everyone. I just wanted to report that I'm having the same issues...they started about a week or so ago.
I've had my AT&T Tilt for about 8 months now (it's a warranty replacement for my first tilt, bought in July...so of course, I'm out of warranty). I recently had problems receiving calls, and then I started being unable to make calls, even though my phone shows a decent signal...anywhere from 4 bars to 2 bars. When dialing, it'll say "Dialing..." for a few seconds...and then it clicks off. A soft reset will fix things temporarily, but that's it.
I'm running the stock AT&T ROM (I'll check the version number if someone thinks it'll help), and I've tried doing a hard reset AND replacing the SIM card. Same effect.
Someone please let me know if they resolved this problem. AT&T offered me an HTC Fuze...but I'm extremely wary of other phones by this manufacturer. I'm very, VERY tired of phones crapping out on me after having just spend a couple of hundred bucks on them. At this point, I'm just looking for something reliable. If someone else here has had problems with the Fuze, please let me know...not to start any fights around here, but I'm actually thinking about going with the iPhone.
Thanks.

3G Radio activity

Hello all,
I am having some issues with the 3G connection with my Dream that started a few weeks ago. There are times when it works just fine and I am able to use apps/maps/browser with no difficulty what-so-ever. Then out of no where it will stop working. I will have 3 or 4 bars, and it says I am connected at 3G, but only outgoing ('Up') arrow on the status bar lights up, while the incoming ('Down') arrow will not light up at all. Then finally after various wait times (2 to 10 minutes) the '3G' will disappear and light back up as if the radio is resetting and will work again for a few minutes before repeating the same process over again. If I enable the 2G only connection it works just fine. I do not see any pattern or correlation to this disconnect. I have tried wiping, reformatting the SD and re-flashing my phone with no help...
Any ideas? TIA

You mean enable airplane mode and then disable it again to reset the connection? I just tried it...did not help. Still sending information out but not downloading anything in return...

it could be your phone
but also it could be 3g service in your area.. it could be unstable or weak..
i.e. i get terrible 3g service in my nearest mall, but 2g works fine.
but in my house my 3g service is almost perfect.
R u using a datasim or not??
Check with ur telecom operator. Sometimes u need to be using a data only sim to be using 3g on the g1. It happened to me. Otherwise there might be some apn settings wrong or missing.
Thanks for the reply guys. I thought it could be the 3G in my area but I have had my phone for well over 6 months now and it has worked great at my house. I know t-mobile is still working on their 3G roll-out so it could be that as well. I really hope it is not my phone but with my luck...who knows...
As far as the datasim, I am not sure. Like I said, I have had my phone for 6+ months and 3G used to work just fine. Is there any way I can tell by looking at my T-mobile SIM to see if it is a datasim or not?
My G1 is doing the same thing!
I am in Atlanta and i have been noticing the same exact problem. I am also noticing that i am suddenly getting mobile versions of websites that i usewd to always get the full web version. I am on cyan 4.1.7. Not sure if it is the rom or the service but nonetheless i am experiencing the exact same problem.
Weird stuff... I am in Los Angeles in case people are wondering.

if you want to take more precautions..
u can go to a corporate tmobile store and ask them to replace your sim card. its just something basic. some sim cards go bad. i had to replace mine twice.
if you go to a booth in the mall or whatever they may charge u $25. in a corporate store, its usually free.
or you can call tmobile and ask them to take off your data plan and then add it cak on again.. this again is a basic troubleshoot for data related problems..
and if it is your phone(i assume you bought ur phone from tmobile) you should have a 1 year warranty. tmobile might exchange or call htc... all you really have to do is pay shipping.

Awesome, thanks for your help. I have had to replace my SIM card a couple of times as well with previous phones but that was due to MMS problems. I didnt think of 3G/SIM problems but I hope that is it. Thanks again!!
I went to the T-Mobile store today and they said that a lot of people have come in with the same problem. So apparently it is a problem with the 3G network here in Southern California (at least the area I live in). I am grateful it is not my phone or the ROM but still kinda ticked off I gotta deal with it until the issue is resolved...

whenever this happens.. it usually means that ur in an area that has weak 3g. i.e. i get weak 3g service in my nearest mall.
or ur areas 3g network is bugging up. but most likely its the first one ^
im having the exact same problem. been having it for a week or so. i thought maybe it was a bug in cyans roms but its not. i will lose 3g connection but i have a full connection and only the uplink arrow is on. this is really pissing me off. i live in los angeles and its been having 3g for a while now and i have never experoenced issues like this with 3g

anyone on ATT having data problems?

I've tried various different ROMs but it seems since installing the latest releases of Froyo I can't seem to get any kind of consistent data speeds any more.
One minute I'm getting 2mb the next I'm getting 200 or no connection at all. I've tried going back to other roms even 2.1 (cyanogen) but still have the issue. I don't know if it's network related or something is messed up on my phone.
I'm going to go back to completely stock everything (including radio) and see if I still have problems but just wanted to post here to see if anyone else has seen issues.
Thanks
Before you resort to messing with your device you might want to call AT&T and ask them whats up with you area. I found that 16 out of 20 towers in my arean were down and that was the problem. I continued to question them about what they were doing about it and found that the answer was nothing. The towers are Verizon owned and they cant do anything about it. They gave me a $280.19 credit on my account which almost pays next months bill.
I saved myself from the trouble and got next months bill paid.
Now, thats killing 2 birds with 1 stone
Yeah I've been having absolutely terrible data all day. I got on here looking for a thread about this. I'm also on AT&T. It has pretty much stopped working completely for the last two hours.
I read there was a nationwide outtage and people thought it was T-Mo but they claimed it was HTC.
Not real sure what the issue is but it's getting annoying.

ya... I ended up calling them... they said not having my IMEI # on my account would cause strange things eventually when the system does it's scans or whatever... they added the # to my account and data seems fine now... well, fine within ATT standards lol
I have been having big issues with the data connection since froyo came out.
Data will get "stuck" on sending and no program (browser, sync, market, ...) will be able to send or receive data ... they all time out or give a network connection error.
The did do an IMEI scan. They shut off my data because I had an iPhone plan.
I just hulked out at the ATT store for half an hour.
I'm still using a GSM carrier because I want to switch phones whenever I please.
They put me on the smartphone data plan. What happens if I want to grab an iPhone 4 and switch back and fourth?
So Angry. Don't Tread on Me!
Well I feel like an asshole. SwitchPro Widget disabled my data connection.
**** it I'm getting an iPhone.

If you look around, there's a broad array of AT&T data problems the last 2-3 days... So something is going on, and I highly doubt it has anything to do with any hardware, software, etc, except for specific examples of course.
Perhaps all the ipony 4 lusers downloading new fart apps?

Crock'o's###e (it's an Irish crock, so there's an "e" at the end). All they need is the SIM card #, or ICCID, to authenticate the user. The IMEI is irrelevant and if the network needs it, it's auto-pulled from the switch (GSM phones always broadcasts the IMEI when they connect, it's how they nab people for the data plans). What the rep is doing with the IMEI is just updating the billing system, not anything network related (again, since the network already has your info). Now...what happens is that whenever you change the SIM or IMEI in the billing system, it orders the network to push out an OTA SIM update. There is,however, an option to simply send the OTA without fudging with the numbers.
Oddly enough, I ran the "mark the spot" application and at the end, it asked me if I wanted to run a diagnostic test. I selected yes and then about 10 minutes later it sent me a free text message acknowledging that they received my issue.
Now i'm testing my speeds and everything seems back to normal!
I'm getting consistent 1.5 up and 1.5 down whereas I was getting < 100 each way a couple of hours ago.
I'm in MD btw.

Ya I've always been thinking the same thing but was rather desperate to get better results after a week of poor performance and, surprisingly, after updating the IMEI # I was getting full speeds again. It could be purely coincidental but I guess there's absolutely nothing wrong with having the correct IMEI on file.
ATT has been sucking lately. I don't know if it's the froyo radio or what but I have been experience a lot of lag when the phone has been off for a bit then trying to initiate a data connection. ATT's data network can be absolutely awesome or absolutely SUCK, depending on the time of day and network utilization. I think I'm ready to jump ship to sprint (apparently they've really cleaned up their network problems in central ohio) or verizon but the Nexus has me stuck to ATT until something significantly better comes a long to switch into.
Too bad all newer phones on other networks all have those craptastic sudo layers like sense and blur... that crap and the "personal touch" of the carrier to android releases always ends up in it being a small eternity before you actually get the latest android. This is why the Nexus stays in my hand... I sure hope someone else releases a vanilla android phone that's support as widely as the Nexus.

lol +1
but yea i hope it has nothing to do with hardware. i was just fine with my nexus one using 3G up until a few days ago. i hope this is AT&T's way of fixing their 3G. this better get cleared up soon cuz im sooo ready to jump onto Verizon's Droid X or jump on T-Mobile's Galaxy S (while still being able to use my sim card on my nexus). i always had issues with AT&T and i just tried to ignore it while i was on the iPhone 3Gs/Nexus One but now this is ridiculous. i have had a few nights were i would get no data service at all. i was scared as sh*t thinking i messed something up while i was flashing (i happened to have flashed something the night i had no data) but when i woke up the next morning, i had data again. im almost fed up with AT&T. im paying $175 a month for two lines and this is the crap i get?

what does that do? does it help AT&T find the spotty service areas?

HTC one with Three uk - Data connection issue

Hi Guys,
Been searching the forum about this but cant find anything so i have registered myself to open this thread.
So, i have recently bought the HTC one from Three (Moved from o2) on the unlimited one plan. The only problem is that I cant get the internet to work, the phone says i have 4 full bars of signal with 'H' connection but the pages will not load at all. When it does work, it will work for 10 mins and then would just stop working again till it decides to stop being moody again.
I have tried switching off the phone, re inserting the sim card but the problem was still there. Therefore, I have called up Three customer services and they said that ' THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE AND THERE IS NOT A FIX' he also agreed that I can cancel my contract (employees in the store have different opinions all together). I now have a phone which cant get online (95% of the time) and a data plan that i cannot use!
So can someone who has this phone with three network UK please tell me whether you are facing this problem? If no one is facing this problem then i am happy to put it down to the handset and get it replaced if not i will leave altogether.
Please note, web browsing on wifi is fine and when i have this issue wifi is switched off.
Thanks,
Mareen
It's do to Three being too heavy congested... I get this sometimes on my LG fone. I have 2 different APN's that I use for Three & they both do this. Try, going into Airplane mode & then back on to reset the data connection. Sadly, this will happen due to more people using Three & they can't support the amount of bandwidth.
This is what happens with Unlimited data plans. The more people use unlimited data, the more likely you will have problems connecting at peak times... thus, meaning whats the point in Unlimited?!.
IMHO, network providers should be making sure they have reliable data connections rather than aiming for 100+mps data speeds!.

Thanks for your reply but this is not just peak time issue. I face this problem all the time and the customer services person also said it's a known issue and possibly there won't be any fix. He also stated the phone gets stuck in this mode due to all the apps installed by three but if that is the case then surely more people would have flagged this up.
I just don't know what to do. This one plan is so good and everyone at work are mostly on it but how can they connect and I cant from the same location same time if it is what you are insisting about congested network?

Wow a lot of hate for 3. I am using the one on the 3 network and do not have any problems whatsoever. I get consistent good speeds between 3 - 10 mbit/s without any of the issues described.
I am in London which is very congested. I am using an unlocked htc one and not a phone provided by 3 so it is possible that it is something to do with 3s Rom. But i think it is much more likely just a bad device and you should get it replaced.
It is definitely not a "known issue" with the phone or we would have heard a lot more about it on these forums.

Exactly! Hence this thread. Im also based in london and this issue happened in any locations i been too! Im torn between staying with them or getting it replaced.
If getting it replaced i will lose the 7 day cancellation period.

& tbf, mine doesn't just happen on peak times either. When I worked for O2 in Pay Monthly, I used to advise customers thats why they have a fair usage in place to prevent data connection issues. Unlimited Data on O2 used to be around 2GB/3GB & anyone who used to go over a lot used to get a text to let them know of cut off there data connection for that month. I left O2 a year ago after working for them for 2 years in Customer Services in Pay Monthly, so know a fair bit about signal & data & why there's generally a fair usage in place.
Three are VERY good at marketing themselves as All You Can Eat but as more people jump onto Three's network, the more you will have data issues. What Three have said is complete crap as my fone is sim free with no bloatware & its all due to there network & NOTHING to do with what fone you have.
I am on Three's Pay As You Go £15 300, 3000 Texts & All You Can Eat Data which Includes Tethering. Soon, Three will have to either cut back All You Can Eat or build more on there infestrure...
i would suggest its a problem with the '3' device. I am on a sim only plan with '3' and using a sim free device i purchased from phones4u, the phone works fine with only the occasional slow connection which i personally put down to congestion. I am in Wiltshire and generally get around 3 to 15mb download depending on time of day and amount of traffic on the network.
Never had a problem with my one on 3! Although in Milton Keynes today it went to Roaming!!!!!!!! Still worked (roaming was turned off) off to London next week so will see what happens with mine. Still mega impressed with the phone...
No issue with my 3 device in Essex and London, although do have issue 40 floors up but I expect that!
I'm on a SIM free device with Three. Never had a data problem yet and have excellent speeds.
Sussex.

Have you tried
1. Check the APN settings (try to delete and add again manually)
2. Set mobile network to 3G only (as opposed to the 2G/3G/LTE option)
Here I get barely 200Kbit/sec down and a megabit up, HSPA+ 21.6Mbit
In the next town I get 15+Mbit down and over 2 megabit up, again HSPA+ 21.6Mbit
Massive difference, and consistent with both places too. Three acknowledge the congestion issues and claim engineers are looking into it, but its been months.
Same speed on T-Mobile here so it's probably a MBNL site...no idea who to complain to tbh!
I get 10-20 mb dl speeds on Birmingham, never had any issues, don't really get the three hate. Been with them for 5 years.

Oh wow!
I'm getting the exact same problem but couldnt find anyone mentioning it so thought I must be doing something wrong!
I'm on EE (Orange) and I get cut outs quite regularly even though it shows full signal. Usually turning it on and off again or switching to airplane mode resolves it but it really is starting to pi$$ me off! :crying:

with ee its a totally different problem, there is a thread on it somewhere, its basically when you switch between 3g and 4g its cuts off,
have a look for the thread
I'm on Orange (although the phone usually shows EE) and I'm seeing this too.
If I leave my house, quite often as soon as the WiFi disconnects, I don't get a data connection. Again, I have the little "H" or "3G" displayed but I need to hit airplane mode on/off to wake it up.
Starting to wonder if it's a handset issue... I'll see if I can run some logcat next time I'm moving around. Doesn't do it all the time, if I leave work, then the wifi > H transition seems fine.
Thanks for the info guys. I used to be with three when they actually entered UK and their service was really good back then in my area. So i think this problem lies with the handset i think. Im going to pop into store and see what they say. Im just worried that if i do get a replacement it will have gap and power button problem reported by other users.
no issues at all, oldham
OK, decided to stay with three but they have promised me to replace the handset. So nice of them. I can only do this Monday as I dont have all of the paperwork with me.
I will keep you guys updated with how my new phone gets on.
