Is Regular flashing safe? - Touch HD Windows Mobile ROM Development

Hi All,
I've been using blackstone for quiet some time, I'm started to develop interested in cooked ROM after my first flash with Dutty, now I've flashed 3 times in three days, and also downloaded bunch of ROMs.
IS IT SAFE TO FLASH REGULARLY?
how many times I can flash?
I'M USING USPL.
I find many useful posts/links/threads in this forum, but no where mentioned in otherwords I can't find an answer to my query.
I hope I'll get some support here.
I'm very eagerly waiting.
THanks to all.

As long as you follow proper procedures/guidelines then yes it is safe. I have flashed 200-300+ roms and have had no issues. Some users have re-ported that they can get some issues from constant flashing, but this is solved by restroing stock rom and then flashing back to cooked rom

it may sound silly

i have been reading loads and loads on this excellent forum and i have learned so much about unlocking and flashing hard and soft for my kaiser and also about the radio and the problems i can run into and their fixes.
here is the silly question
what rom software should i flash to my phone?
i have read about some of the roms available but i cant see many differances between then because as i can see they are all debranded firmware roms and all that i can see is that some have different applications allready implimented in them, so does it really matter which rom i use or should i just use the newest?
thanks for any suggestions or help in reguards to this

It is very hard to tell someone to use a particular ROM, because each person expects different things out of their phone. The best thing to do is read about each ROM, read the ROM's thread to find out what the Chef has put into their ROM....then pick one and flash away....trying is the only way to find out what is best for you.
Hope that this helps..
i thaught that would be the answer i would get lol but thanks anyway.
does repeatedly reflashing the rom to try the software affect the phone in any bad way at all or is it safe to go ahead and try a few?

I currently have Stylez Black version 2. I just flashed Version 2 last Friday. It is working wonderfully. I had Version 1, since it's release.
Stylez is new to cooking for Kaiser, but he has cooked for Dash. He is also helped other Chefs with their builds.

I have flashed my phone hundreds of times in the last year and a half, with no ill effects. I personally think that all the hard resets associated with flashing have kept my phone clean and running at top form.
Since most roms are cooked using the same basic kitchens and from the same M$ builds, the basic structure is the same. Some cooks cook for stability, some for speed, some for super storage and some to just constantly push the limit of possibilities.
After a while, flashing will be like changing themes. Look at them all and find one that suits you needs and flash away, you can always change it if you want more or less in a rom.

You are still running a stock 6.0 rom, check the wiki to upgrade your phone to a stock 6.1 rom.
If it is custom roms that you want to delve into, then you can't do better than stylez, but you are going to have to unlock and Hardspl your phone first, before you can flash a custom rom.
Read and understand here first.

Thank you denco7. Yes i'm going to try the custom rom suggested. Just trying to work up the nerve to get started. I'm sure with the great people here in XDA that i will be just fine. I've modded an lg incite, but it was way simpler than the Tilt. o'well....i need to stop procrastinating and just do it!!
ok....just did it. now i have stylez black. now i'll spend the rest of the evening tweaking!!
i have another question already......how do i lock my phone now? thanks!

Take a good delve in thread there is a S2U2 not newest version but a stable release pimped you can also just use long press end to use default lock.

[Q] how to make a captivate rom?

ive begun flashing my phone quite a bit and enjoy trying out different roms, although i would like to teach myself how to make one.
how difficult is this process? and which guides and such exists that can help get me started at least?

man definitely looks like im in a little over my head here, is this the method most "legit" devs use?
I've tried to use that method 2 or 3 times now, and every time once i get to the actual flashing it wont install so I would like to find a way to do this too
Hey much thanks for the info. After being a "flash-a-holic" I've decided I want to at least give it a shot... there's bits from each ROM I enjoy and some that I really miss from others.... I want a completely custom ROM and I want to do it. Gonna give this a shot and see.

well it's not entirely incorrect.
correct me if im wrong, but the majority of custom roms out there have cap_erase removed which means people can factory reset safely.
the bricks usually occur if people wipe on a stock samsung rom, where cap_erase ISN'T removed.
so if you're on a custom rom, and you flash another custom rom, assuming both roms had cap_erase removed, it shouldn't be a problem right?

You haven't done a lot of reading have you? Look for it in the General section, especially topics for eMMC and 'Entrophy'
Wiping be it on custom or stock doesn't guarantee any safeties at all. even using CMW is a no no. If your custom rom has an infected kernel (that comes with it), fully wiping after flashing your phone ensures you a deadweight one after that.
It only takes one single full wipe to brick your phone, and it takes a load of hell to fix it.

how do you generalize your advice to all the people your giving it? do you ask for their kernel first before telling them to fully wipe their NOTE?
Your playing a russian roulette dude. People would misunderstand your advice generally. There a lot of custom ROMS out there. Most often than not, its carrying an infected kernel. People who just scans and see your advice would tantamount to follow it to a tee (w/o telling you the full details of their kernel) and WHAM!! they get their phone brick!
There are already to many people asking help here... PLEASE don't add it more with your senseless advice!

I've flash a lot of custom roms before you ever had gone here in Xda-dev dude. Don't divert me into clicking on that link.. been there done that. get it?
My advice to you is, before you try advising people for their problems. READ FIRST in all the stories and forum threads on our beloved Note. You will gain infos on what's causing it, and how to resolve and prevent it from ever happening it again.
So tip of advice, don't go all around the forum in advicing people to fully wipe their phone after flashing any roms. STOCK or CUSTOM.
Person's like you are the causes on why there are still people getting the bricks on their phone. Crappy advice and stuff!

What's wrong with the advice...? OP just flashed one of the custom ROM, and he should already read the guide including how to root, to use a safe kernel to flash, and wipe procedures...
The only thing he didn't do yet was just wipe data, and this guy here was just trying to help by reminding him, which is not wrong...
I believe you concern about others, but why should you going mad? If his advice was not perfect why don't you give a better advice rather than bragging yourself and insulting other member just because he is 'younger' than you...?
Again, for his case, a full wipe is necessary and:

Hi Akilesh,
Yeah, no problem. Regarding your cleanote rom q, hmm that I'm not sure how long it takes to boot though. You may need to address that question my friend to the appropriate Cleanote note thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1716088
I've ended my quest in flashing custom roms already... eversince this brick bug came and wreck some lives off some people.
By the way, always make sure whenever you need to wipe things, it is better you have a safe kernel installed beforehand.
Like I've said getting the Super brick bug is just like playing a russian roulette. You'll never know when and how you got the brick, so take necessary precautions on how to prevent it
.
Cheers!

Yeah he did wipe it but he was already using a safe kernel. My point is, don't just blurt out to people to wipe anythng without asking them some additional necessary infos. It is okay to wipe and I'm not against that (if your using a safe kernel already). What I am against is the wrong notion in giving advices to WIPE your phone PERIOD.. Without even clarifying other infos at hand.

I'm sorry if I can't answer your cleanote question bud. Like I've said. I stopped changing /flashing custom Roms after the onset of this superbrick bug issue. Im all on stock 4.0.4 firmware now.
Anyway, it's all nice and dandy feeling that everything has been fix already in your end.

I also want to flash cleanote rom and i am currently waiting on an updated version of that rom with the latest notecore kernel. I'm on stock 4.0.4 also and will use the PC Odin method to flash notecore kernel to root and then triangle away for binary reset. Then finally go with mobile Odin/PC Odin to flash the rom. After hours of reading threads, this seems to be a safest way to do it.

Galaxy note JB update, clean install STILL SLOW

Hopefully this is where I should have posted it......
Hello,
Seen this being brought up a lot but i have the galaxy note which was on ICS standard before, I then did the update to JB through Kies or via the software update button and after a while realised it was slow and that everyone was having the same problem. I then found everyone said to do a clean install and a hard reset and just start fresh which I have done. After a couple of weeks now its is still running slow and laggy and just painfully annoying, can be there for a bout 5 seconds sometimes longer waiting for apps or things to open.
Any ideas on what I can do?
And like I said its all standard haven't put a custom rom or anything on there as I don't know how to do any of it but is it worth learning how to do it and doing it?
Thanks

Yup, your experience pretty much sums up the JB update for the note - c**p. However there are a few things you can do, first install a ROM with an XXLT4 base or higher, after that then uninstall as many apps as possible that you won't use and that you can live without. It will be a bit better but still, not as fast and smooth as ICS.
Revert back to ICS! Flash the ics stock via ODIN. Download from sammobile.com

I think I would like to yes but every time I have tried I cant do it and get confused lol.
As I said my phone is completely standard not been flashed or anything so would need a whole step by step guide to do it on and would then need the ROM or OS whatever its called to install. I have a galaxy ace to test it on. I think the thing that was scaring me was that my phone is still under warranty so wouldn't want to ruin that but then I might try it anyway??

There is a detailed guide provided on how to root in the forum and it's very safe. I rooted the phone the next day i bought it! Don't worry u can try it, the methods prescribed here are very safe, just follow the instructions to the letter. And custom ROMs will give u a much different experience altogether!

Yes totally, if you have a look at the touchwiz based ROMs you have the inherent samsung features with new customisations. Some other custom ROMs like CM based give you a native Android experience. Try them out!

Ohh right yeh I would like to give them a go would be good, do you have a link to the ROMs at all please?
Ok so I have got a link to some custom roms which treacherous_hawk has given me but couldn't find a step by step guide on how to first flash my phone and get it started?
Need a step by step guide for dummies on this as like I said never done it before haha, im a computer engineer as my day job but just cant work these out
Im a bit consumed, so what is the very first thing I need to do is it flash my device or ROM it? If im right the ROM is the operating System isn't it?
Thanks

Firstly root your phone. The guide for rooting is there in dr.Ketan's thread. I'd have posted the link but I'm currently on my mobile device and it's tedious. Just look in the Android development forum and the thread for how to root will be right there. Next after you root and flash a CWM recovery (you'll find the kernel with such a recovery by Phil and it'll be there in the same forum that teaches you to root). After this, you can flash a ROM (yes it's similar to operating system!). Try ROMs like the PAC which are feature packed and stable. Please follow all the instructions to the letter. And do not forget to hit the thanks button

ah lovely ok im going to look for this thread and see if I can find it. Like I said I have a galaxy ace I might try it on first to see if it goes well and then I can work on my note to see what happens. Once I finally manage to root my phone I will then try a ROM and see how I go, if I have any questions ill post them on here and see if you can help :fingers-crossed:
thanks, have hit that button too!
