Rooting an unlocked phone - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey there. I am about to buy an htc dream which is already unlocked. I want to root my phone so I was wondering if downgrading then rooting it would affect my unlocked status in any way?

Don't worry, your phone will still remain unlocked.

alright sweet, i was just a little worried because on another site (android forums) a user was saying that it may lose its unlocked status.

You might wanna wait though for upcoming phone in 2010 like Nexus that was rumored to be 199 unlocked but who knows might be less than 400 bux
My point is wait for something better since dream has very limited HW.

well i live in canada and we usually dont get access to nice phone right away, right now i am running an lg neon which is less than desirable. This would be my first smart phone so i will probably get it and keep it till 2011 or so. I appreciate your opinion though for sure.
Could I also get an answer for a thread link to the easiest method of rooting? I have heard about the instantroot.apk, would this work with an htc dream?

If you mean the GSM version then use this guide, it has a nice vid that should help out.
http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/22/how-to-root-the-mytouch-3g-or-g1-in-one-click/
Follow each step and dont skip any.The GSM Dream cant be used on rogers or telus i think, not sure if they use CDMA(no sim)

There is no CDMA Dream Never heard of telus but Rogers is GSM fo sho.

i want to use it with fido (fido's parent company is rogers (they use sim)) would this still work? also does this work with all firmwares?

Will what work? If your phone accepts the SIM for the carrier you want to use now then it always will.. If not then you'll need an unlock code. Try the one click root method using flashrec.apk and report back if that doesn't work....

alright cool, im buying the phone on friday so ill report back later. (using the method in the video to root my htc dream)
Could someone please explain what the difference between recovery and rom is.

A rom is like Win7 or linux and recovery mode is like DOS/CMD or maybe safe mode on a PC.The rom is flashed and the recovery mode is needed to flash custom roms from here and to flash themes.

ok sweet, you guys are actually a HUGE help in helping me understand this. So after i follow that video my phone will be "rooted" After that I go to install the latest rom from CG. Do i use the files in the video (the recovery file) or something better out now? also should i use the linda file manager he talks about or astro?

also what is DOUNT and cupcake.
oh right also do i need to install "CyangenMod Recovery IMG" what is it?

google names the updates after pastries. 1.5 is cupcake (1st version to have a soft keyboard) next is 1.6 donut (supports different screen sizes, new market, a bit snappier) and the latest is 2.0 eclair (what the droid has. not out for any other phones yet. refined browser, car home, and other cool features like navidation, you can get navigation on donut too though trough the market.)

about the navi, i heard that it only works in canada after a workaround but I would assume that it needs 3g for it to work which i do not have in my plan.

Since I do not have data I probably should not download this because the only internet i will be using is wifi. Does this phone have an option to turn off all data, to prevent accidental usage. (like the iphone)
Since I do not have data in my plan is their any reason for me to get this? i would think that google maps will suffice.

could somone also please exlplain SPL, from what i have read it is somesort of compatibility with roms, how can i check mine and does the latest CGM require a high SPL

yeah i believe it's flash 9 right now. doesnt work on all pages yet but better than nothing.
hero flash
its not the best but it good enough for now...... it can load most pages that have flash, but its flash heavy site u will have hard time interacting with that page.
Its been asked quite a few times so hopefully searches will point to this thread in the future. As kusotare has mentioned, Adobe are working on it and even made parts of Flash open source for others to work on it.
Hero has it but its only Flash 9 but soon enough (most likely on better hardware) there will be much better flash support in terms of speed and usability.
Is it just me but i rilly don't care about flash on my phone.
i so know im about to get flamed for saying this ^ haha

Should i upgrade my G1 to Cupcake?

i have bought a G1 to use as my main phone, but also for application development
it is currently NOT on cupcake
should i upgrade or is it better for development to leave it as it is?
are there any benefits in not upgrading?
i'm guessing that i'll have to upgrade sooner or later though...
Yes....upgrade and root
yes
Upgrade. As of now there r now apps in the market make for 1.0 or 1.1 frimware. So it would be best to upgrade. Also is Ur g1 rooted. Becuase without root it cantt be fully utilized.

Lmao, I always use WiFi just because it's faster if I'm posting from my phone Anyway back on topic, to the OP do you have an ADP?
no, i have a G1
am i right in thinking it can only be upgraded to Cupcake using OTA?
This is bad if true, because i dont even have a data plan.
Also last night i reset the factory settings, now i can't even login, as i have no credit???
On WM I was used to booting into HardSPL and flashing the image like that, isn't there something similar on Android?

Correct, why not just root your phone? You can install a great many number of incredible ROMS. Cupcake is available OTA but if you're not registered with T-Mobile I don't think you can get it. I believe you can though without a data paln.

I'm new to this whole .. rooting thing

Alright, so I just got a Rogers G1 and I would like to get THE smoothest, most fluid, feature-packed ROM. I have Android 1.5 right now. So.. where do I start? Thanks!

Magics will be given to dream owners.
You should have gotten the magic since it has more ram and will be supported longer with updates.
You can always use search button or even simple google search:
"Rogers Dream+Root" heres one

Well.. I use AT&T's 3G, as I live in the US. So, I had to "import" it from Canada. I already have a jailbroken iPhone 3G S. So, I really don't want another touch screen phone with the same form factor. The G1 has the physical keyboard and seems like it could make a pretty good back-up phone. Do you think it's pointless for me to keep this G1, even if I get the latest and smoothest ROM available???

Seems like you got the phone just for the KB and not the OS. You just need to read carefully so you dont end up bricking your phone.

The HTC Dream is the only phone with Android that I can think of that has support for AT&T's 3G network AND a physical keyboard. The BACKFLIP is coming out, but ... yeah, I'll pass on the whole MOTOBLUR OS. Also, what are my chances of bricking the phone? Seeing as I've never done this before and have no clue where to start.

You can worry about that later your jumping the gun already and your phone is still stock.
First you need to root and if your successful then you can worry about using roms.

Haha.. Alright, sounds good.
So.. How hard is rooting? Is there a tutorial somewhere?

If it's root only...?

If we can only get this thing rooted and not fully unlocked, then will we still be able to have wireless tethering and overclocking, because I know in order to do that you need a modiffied kernel, Right? The only way to flash a new kernel is the same way you would flash a custom rom. Please correct me if I'm wrong!!!
You can still get wireless tethering if you only root yes.

I'm pretty sure you can overclock with just root. The Milestone can be overclocked, and that only has root.
thats good, so to me the only major reason why we would want to be able to flash different roms is so we can get the latest version of Androis ASAP! Otherwise once 2.2 hits the DX we only need root to do the other awsome things! I only care for Overclocking, wireless tethering, titanium backup, and deleting system apps, and a few other random apps requiring root!
What about modifying themes heavily?
Having using a Blackberry in the past, one of the best things about it was the fact that the main theme could be heavily modified, (and often very easily via quick downloads) to show such things as upcoming calendar events, missed calls, and the intros of recent texts and emails; all on one screen at the same time, as well as weather and time. I don't really need apps on my main screen as much as a proper log of what I've missed, is coming up, etc..
The "Today" theme, in its many variations is a common example.
Is this something that's possible just by being rooted? Is this possible without even being rooted? Do any Android phones that are fully hacked open even have the possibility to re-arrange their home screen in a such a way?
I've seen that a calendar and weather/time can be easily done, but I'm looking for something kind of like this (it would show newly unchecked emails and texts if there are any, and rolling over the calendar reveals upcoming events):
img202.imageshack.us/img202/6293/bbscreenshot3.jpg
Here's a similar type I also used, that is less minimalistic:
hulkster1970.com/theme/9000/v2/v2_13.jpg
Of course these I used on a much small BB Bold 9000 screen, so I can't imagine what the Droid X could do, if these types of modifications are possible?
Root enough for that? Fully unlocked enough? Just not possible, and I expect too much?
Thanks,
--bb
If that is the interface that your interested in, you should check out the home replacement Slidescreen, it has that kind of layout.
wireless tethering is the only thing I care for NOW.
maybe when Gingerbread comes out then I want some

That's absolutely perfect. I will gladly drop $7 for that.
Thanks very much, Irishpride!
/That requires no rooting, or full boot access then? That's exactly what I'm looking for.
can a phone with root only access be flashed to other carriers such as cricket or would you need access to the bootloader?
By the way guys, P3 and Birdman are saying that this might take a very long time to get rooted if not never.

That is pretty cool. Kind of reminds me of my WinMo 6.5 home screen to be honest.
I thought the same thing.
@titanfan, My understanding is that rooting will not be especially difficult or easy, rather flashing custom ROMs will be nearly impossible due to the encrypted bootloader. In other words, the X will be in.the same boat as the Milestone since they share the same bootloader. Please correct if I am wrong

Birdman said point-blank, 4+ months for root.
http://twitter.com/mrweeeedbirdman
"If you want a rootable phone, wait 4 months or so on your droid x." Posted July 9th at 11:18pm PST.
However, he's giving cryptic hints today that there's some big news coming about the Droid X. Maybe we're in luck.
Don't need root for BT tethering
BT thethering is already working out of the box with Windows 7 and Linux.
There is another thread in general I think where I've given some instructions. Don't need to pay for tethering.

sold my rooted hero-new owner can't activate?

hey all. so i recently sold my old sprint hero that was rooted to cm6 and the new owner says that sprint hasn't been able to activate it to their account? is this normal? when i sold it, i did a reset to clear my data but i left it rooted (at their request). can someone tell me the easiest way to tell them how to unroot the phone? from speaking to them, i get the impression that they don't know much about this type of thing.

You guys should meet back up and you should flash a sense rom for them.
Only way for them to activate.
that's what i was afraid of. i sold the phone on ebay so it isn't someone local that i can meet with. so would you say that the easiest route would be for me to create a micro sd for them to boot from (someone else rooted my phone for me, but i rooted my nook color this way)? do you know offhand where i could find instructions to do this? i searched the android development forum but didn't see anything that dealt with going back to stock.

I found this guide and found it very helpful it has a ton of stuff.. for your issue see Factory Reset not too far down.
Hero Root Guide
Just use the ruu in zip format is does it all for you in one file. Just send him the zip, tell him to put it on his sd, power the phone off, plug in the charger, hold down volume and power and 15 min later wham pure stock. No root no recovery. Just like out of the box

Don't Quote me but, I'm Thinking the new owner should be able to Activate it by phone! At least I was able to with Mine! If not try just installing a 2.1 sense Rom and Delete the Superuser App, From my Experiences Chances are they Won't even Check for Root!!

Wither way they need to reprogram the phone for his phone number, and the only way to do that is use the hash codes which only work on sense roms. Otherwise, if you know your way around qpst, you can do it from stock.
