GVXMPP-Push notification of Google SMS! - G1 Apps and Games

ok guys, im sure many of u are annoyed by the fact that google voice (official) refreshes every 5 minutes! so that mean you have to wait 5 minutes to get your SMS and that is just stupid. i heard many of you use GV by eric (i think thats his name) and actually stopped working on his app but the cool thing is that he has notification setup for every 1 minute! thats cool, but lame at the same time because you have to use two apps to get a notification. well i just found the app to solve our problems!
Its called GVXMPP and you can get it here!

Basically it uses the Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) to literally PUSH your SMS to you! no more waiting for you SMS to come through. for me, being on tmobile, i canceled my texting plan and i just use google voice to send a SMS and I thought i would just have to deal with the whole 5 min notification.
Its really easy to setup and use. Its involves forwarding your SMS to a specific email address (be it your GVXMPP username) and when you open the app, you can see them there. Of course, you could just push them to your regular email address but this is nice because it groups it all under each senders name and you can have an ongoing conversation.
The problems:
This app is in ALPHA stage. It doesnt look pretty and it has some issues. This is the email that I sent them about their app:
-notification bar doesn't clear when u click on on the sms.
-connection randomly disconnects even if the app is running. Takes a couple secs to reload.
-msg from friend was displayed twice. First one didn't come through cuz it was disconnected. After reconnection (after i sent a msg) I got two of the same sms from them.
-when you open an sms from the notification panel, when u hit back it doesn't take u back to the app homescreen (where it displays the sms senders) it just shows you the last person u spoke with and the last message (it removes the newer message or doesn't update) hitting back should take u to the app home menu.
-when u text in landscape mode the text just keep scrolling horizontally as you type. Doesn't jump to the next line like normal.
-(not a bug) ugly ui, can't generate new sms, no picture of sender, not sure why it displays the long ID under the senders name, needs to be integrated with the Google voice app but I doubt that's something you can control. Just so its easier to like place a call or see contact info.

and their response was:
1. Notification Bar doesn't clear - this has been fixed and will be released to the market tonight.
2. Connection Randomly Disconnects - We are continuing to work on this, and so far it's been getting better.
3. Message Displayed Twice - Known issue, working on a fix.
4. Back / Navigation Issues - Noted, will put it on the list of things to fix.
5. Landscape Mode - What kind of phone do you have?

When you get a message, it will pop up in the notification panel. (see below for a screenshot). Okay guys, so try it out. It works for me, yes some hiccups, but they are suppose to release an update tonight! let me know what you think, hit me up on Twitter

oh and....ITS FREE!!!

*Searches on Market for it*

Iman07,
Thanks for your awesome write-up!
Indeed the app is "alpha", but over the past week I've been able to make huge strides in improving it, and am going to try my best to stick to making new releases whenever possible to squash bugs and add functionality.
Another cool thing to point out, you can sign in to your GVXMPP account with any XMPP client, such as Pidgin or Adium. This will allow you to get your SMS messages in the same push format on your desktop/laptop. Additionally, we do not require your Google username or password to make this service work, unlike other solutions.
There will be an update hitting the market shortly which will include:
- Contact Sorting - Contacts will be sorted alphabetically.
- Notification Bug - Notifications will now be properly cleared.
- Double Message - Messages were being appended to the conversation list even if they were already displayed, this should no longer happen.
- Performance - A few small performance increases that should cut down on memory usage.
Some things we have planned for the near future:
- Contact Photo integration.
- Better contacts integration (initiate calls from chats, etc).
- Better unread message indicators on the contact list.
- Overall UI improvements, including conversation themes.
If you would like to stay up to date, follow @gvxmpp on Twitter, or feel free to post bugs/suggestions to this thread.
As previously stated, GVXMPP is free and I intend to keep it that way.

JBAssistant 0.1 (yet another assistant tool...:)

Hi, i would like to share a little app i made. I use my QTEK for work. I like having ringtones but i was tired to have to switch off volume every time i start a meeting. I also want to be able to reply missed calls with SMS only to some people. And i also want to made my own app :
Features:
- App detect if are "busy" or "free" based on the appointments schedule.
- App can silent or set to vibrate the phone when start a meeting and restore sound when meeting ends.
- App can reply missed calls (on "busy" mode) with custom SMS and it has nice options to configure who will receibe the SMS....
Known Bugs:
1- App will start on every reboot (that´s ok), and show the main screen (just put it on background).
2- App will change ringer mode (silence, vibrate, ringtone on) but will not update default upper right volume icon.
Hope someone find this app usefull too.....Any comments will be appreciate...
I only tested it on WM6. I think it should works fine on WM5, can any one try it there?
You will need NETCF 2 before installing my app (check it, may be you already have it):
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...6b-356b-4a2c-857c-e62f50ae9a55&DisplayLang=es
English: http://rapidshare.com/files/25370543/JBAssistant_0.5_-_EN.CAB
Español: http://rapidshare.com/files/25370561/JBAssistant_0.5_-_ES.CAB
Version 0.5:
- App will now apply settings also to sms and voicemail.
- App saves settings when enters busy mode, and restore them when going to free mode.
If u have for example this setup:
PDA Settings:
- Phone Ring
- Text Message Vibrate
JBAssistant Settings:
- Silence Phone checked
Behaviour will be:
On Busy Mode:
- Incoming Phone calls and Text Messages will not ring or vibrate.
On Free Mode:
- Incoming calls will ring and text messages will vibrate.
- On free mode, "ringer:" will be "PDA Settings" to better comunicate current setttings for text, phone and voicemail.
- When exit the application on "busy mode" phone, voice and text sound settings will be restore to PDA settings saved before entering "busy mode".
- Note: Application saves your current settings before entering busy mode and restore them when entering free mode. Because of that, you can freely change settings when application is in free mode, but if you do it when application is on busy mode, settings will be reverted to the original values (those before entering busy mode) when entering free mode. World can't be perfect and you are busy, don't loose time playing with phone settings ....
Version 0.4:
- fixed a bug introduced in verison 0.3 when restoring sound after a meeting ends.
Version 0.3:
- Added option to ignore meetings with "free" status
- Icon on trybar when app is running.
- New (and nicer) application icon.

Will do since I'm really interested in this, but at the moment my brain is so tired I'm surprised I actually know how to spell
Version 0.3
Updated first post with version 0.3. Sorry i can't (yet) found the way to hide the main screen at startup (yes..i also think it was an easy task ..not on CF2

Restart Media - Button to restart the mediaserver manually. Not really needed, but might come in useful.
Reboot - Reboots phone
Exit - Exits the application
Make and Restore Backup - Does what it says on the tin
Push - Go to...
...Push Menu!
Yes - Pushes selected version WITH the Headset Boost
No - Pushes selected version WITHOUT the Headset Boost
Cancel - Returns to the main screen.
App is available on the android market, is currently at version 2.2, and costs £1.50.
I am also planning to create a 'lite' version which will have limited functionality, if i have the time!
Check my signature for a link to the cyrket page!
great cant wait whats the eta i love your app
Should be done within the next few days, tomorrow if i get my act together
Had a day off from uni today so i got all the coding, GUI and everything else pretty much done. There's a few bugs to iron out, like the reboot button not responding correctly and there's a problem with pushing the files when the headsets plugged in thats a bit irritating and i can't seem to fix, but other than that everything's fully completed
cool dont rush it man you do an awesome job
Thanks to your app my phone is louder than my friends T-Mo HTC Touch Pro2's speaker mode, awesome!
V2.2 is completely finished!!
Currently testing for any major bugs that may be present, so if you wish to test (and ultimately receive a free copy ) please contact me.
Please note, not everyone will be chosen to test the app as i've had a lot of requests.
Cool.
Is an EQ app still on the horizon ? You said you were going on Vacay when I asked. Didnt follow up much so not sure if it was bypassed.
Sort of/maybe. it depends if we can get the new labeled audiopara working properly
And it's on the market now people, go download
love the new version, it seems like the headset booster even works over bluetooth. I did find one bug that most people probably wont even notice because i wouldnt have if i didnt have my keyboard open when I opened the app. If you slide open the screen the welcome message will pop up again and also a message saying "all back ups have been made successfully and then another message saying "app refreshed". It will keep happening every time you open and close the screen. Not a major bug but figured I would let you know. Keep up the great work!

[APP] NickWrite - Write faster! -[R]- 2012-03-31 -[U]- 2012-06-04 -[V]- 1.2

Name: NickWrite
NickWrite aims to be something like a text editor for WP7. You can write text with it for messages, e-mails or for other apps through use of the clipboard, supported by many features beyond standard WP7 text entry:
It offers multi-level cursor movement by dedicated navigation buttons, undo/redo, auto-save, template-based text creation with variables complete with live tiles pinned to start page, a shortcut-expanding mechanism, and easy selecting of things like phone numbers and URLs within your text.
Also present is a word-autocomplete and word-propose feature that's not based on a general dictionary but on what you wrote earlier with this app. This can lead to a better hit rate and also works if you write in a language that WP7 itself does not support.
The app is free and without ads.
I'm the author of this app and open for new feature suggestions; the new landscape support of version 1.1 was already the result of user feedback.

wow your app is awesome...but its a bit too far from the meaning of easy to use i mean, it's not designed for the everyday use of the phone only for serious people
I see two text when creating a new message. One is Send to which is usually blank and second is Code. Can you explain both of them.

Send to: is just a label / legend, a title for up to 3 recipients of the message that will appear below this text, if there are any. If you work with templates, you can specify up to 3 possible recipients together with the template, and if you use such a template to create a message, you can choose among them with checkboxes.
If you don't work with templates, there can't be any such recipients, and you use the standard mechanism of choosing recipients after handing over the text to WP7.
Code: If you write, NickWrite shows the UNICODE value of the character that is to the right of the cursor at any given moment, to the left of this "Code" legend. Handy if you copied text from somewhere and are not sure what's that character.
I think I see a way to improve the app in a next version: Only showing things like those two legends when they apply (when there are recipients / when there is a character to show the code of), otherwise they might be confusing.
Thanks,
I tried the template and understand how it works but here is the second confusion.
In case when a template has both email and phone number pedefined, If I select both using checkboxes, Both Message and Mail button gets disabled. This means I can either use numbers or emails and then choose appropriate action.
My suggestion will be to create a automated process where I can simply hit send and it sends first the SMS to all the numbers and then again for emails in the second step.
In case I am not clear let me know.
How it works with recipients

Maybe you came to a wrong conclusion from a small number of tries. The logic behind this all is like that:
Checkboxes for up to 3 recipients, and phone number and/or e-mail address for each of them.
If all checked recipients have a phone number, you can message. If all checked recipients have an e-mail address, you can e-mail. Or the other way round: As soon as you check the first recipient without a phone number, you can't message anymore; as soon as you check the first recipient without an e-mail address, you can't mail anymore.
If all the recipients you want to use have both number and e-mail address, you can message to all of them first, use the "Back" button to return to NickWrite and then mail them as well - fairly easy, but I am not sure I understand why you would like to do that?
Anyway. it's an age-old GUI problem with grayed / inactive controls: They won't tell you why something should not be possible at the given moment...
My suggestion will be to create a automated process where I can simply hit send and it sends first the SMS to all the numbers and then again for emails in the second step.

I think I understand this idea, but I don't have a good idea right now what should happen for recipients with both phone number and e-mail address specified.
New version 1.2
Just edited the opening post of this thread to reflect the new version 1.2 of NickWrite that I can announce somewhat belatedly.
This version offers something that I haven't seen in any other WP7 app so far: You can move the cursor with dedicated navigation buttons. That's something like the Home, End, Cursor Up/Down etc. group of keys on a real keyboard.
(I wanted to do this right from version 1.0 but did not find a way to implement it. Fellow programmers may be aware that the Silverlight / WP7 TextBox control does not offer any obvious way to move the cursor line-wise.)
Especially by using Page Up and Page Down on the Overview page navigating longer texts has become much easier.
Furthermore there is support for live tiles: You can pin individual templates to the Start Page. You can configure such a tile to start NickWrite in edit mode for the template, or to directly go to the WP7 message send or mail send pages. With recipients defined you can send something with only 2 taps - one on the tile and one on the "Send" button.
I will soon complete the app's web page at www.nickwrite.com with a detailed change log and add more feature descriptions.

[TUTORIAL] Use the Emergency contact feature in Samsung Galaxy S5

There are those features on your phone that you'll probably never use, and then the ones you'll never want to use. Such is the case with Safety Assistance, an emergency tool that will alert up to four predetermined contacts when you sound the alarm.
Click to collapse
Here's how it works: In time of need, you would press the power/lock button three times in quick succession. This action sends a series of text messages with your approximate mapped location, a photo from the front and rear-facing cameras, and a short voice recording.
This isn't to replace a call to 911, 999, 000, or other emergency services. Samsung's lengthy disclaimer also states that, since the tool is based on text messaging, it "may not work accurately, continuously, or error-free" depending on network conditions.
Still, for a little peace of mind, Samsung's twist on ICE, or In Case of Emergency, numbers, is easy to set up. Here's how you do it.
All The Credits To @Jessica Dolcourt/CNET
1.) Turn it on
-- Navigate to the Settings menu, then press Quick Settings. Select Safety Assistance from the list of choices, then tap Send help messages, and swipe the toggle to On.

Hop into the settings menu to get started with Safety Assistance.
You'll be asked to read through and sign off on a lengthy terms of service that reminds you that this feature won't summon an ambulance, and that also absolves Samsung of personal liability.
2.) Check the boxes
If you want to scale back on the service to keep from inundating your contact with so many texts, you can uncheck the boxes to deselect sending a recording, and photos from the Galaxy S5's two cameras. In that case, triggering the emergency response would send an SOS text with your location.
3.) Set up your contacts
Back out of the help messages window and tap Manage primary contacts to select your emergency recipients. You can have up to four.
You can have up to four contacts on your list. You'll see a notification that the GS5 has sent your SOS.
It isn't a good idea to include emergency services here, since most government agencies won't accept texts, or even know who you are in the first place. (This is changing in some places in the US, but isn't widespread by far.)
4.) Test it out
It's worth letting your contacts know that you've added them. I'd also recommend a dry-run test so both sides understand what to expect in the event of the real deal -- may it never occur.
Your recipient sees a series of texts, including a short voice recording, and a map with your coordinates

SmarterBit
Hi everyone! I have recently released an Xposed Framework module called SmarterBit to allow you to enhance your Fitbit Charge and Charge HR fitness trackers.
Features
SMS/Text Notifications
Custom SMS/Text notification format
Notifications only if the device screen is off
Hide Caller ID for phone calls
and many more to come!
Features I am currently working on adding are quiet hours (either "intelligent" based on your Fitbit detecting sleep or a user-set range), Tasker implementation, smart alarms, and adding more integration with other messaging services (WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Hangouts, etc.)
Link
The app is currently on sale through the Google Play Store for $1.50 and can be found here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mikerinehart.smarterbit
I am open to any and all suggestions for feature additions from the community
I just installed the app and I'm testing it out. I see messages typically get cut off. Is this just a screen timeout limit? I sent you a PM too.

Unfortunately yes - the screen timeout limit is a firmware limitation.
How about MMS notifications? I understand you can't translate pictures into text, but sometimes there is text accompanying the picture. You could add the option to customize like SMS so that you could at least see who the MMS is from (ex: MMS received from %sender%).

Heh, I was actually thinking about this the other day. I'll see what I can do
Did today's Fitbit app update break your app? SMS is no longer working for me. I see they implemented new Notification settings in the app update today.
I just bought the app and coincidentally Fitbit app has updated as well, so I couldn't get SMS notifications working after setting everything up. Calls got displayed on my Charge HR as they would with Fitbit's own Caller ID.. Thought of refunding the app but then stumbled across the post above. I can Enable SmartBit in the Fitbit app, but SMS notifications don't show up on my wrist.
Update:
After rolling back the Fitbit app to 2.10 (I don't care for GPS routes in 2.11 as I don't own a Surge) and deleting app data for SmartBit I can tell for sure that neither of notifications worked with 2.11. The vibration pattern SmartBit uses for CallerID is different to the default one-time kick from Fitbit's Notification. Also, when SmartBit actually overrides the default notification engine there's no indication of 'Notifications are running' in the status bar. What seems to have changed in 2.11 is the fact that they now allow you to select from multiple notification sources - Dialer, Skype .. whatever have you. SmartBit must not be set up to deal with these, despite the fact that it overrides the default 'Enabled Notifications' with 'Enable SmartBit' in Fitbit's application.
On a related note, I previously had a Huawei phone (H30-U10), where SMS were being routed as calls by default (I guess for their own Talk Band device), so my CHR was reading them as a classic pager would without any human intervention. Switching to a Sammy phone has lost me this feature so I was forced to look for a workaround.
Yes - the latest Fitbit update breaks SmarterBit. Please rollback to the previous version (2.10 I believe) if you would like SmarterBit functionality... At least until I can reverse engineer their new changes and push an update. I've recently started a new full-time job so I don't have as much time as I used to, but I'll try my best to get it updated for everyone
