hey guys, i now have my htc dream running the latest cyanogen mod, it is on build drc83, it is a dream but it is seen as a g1 in the menus, it is an EBI1 phone regardless i believe.
I dont think apps2sd is working on the phone (i am not using any program to do it as i thought it is built into the Cyanogen rom). I just downloaded and installed weather channel app then rebooted the phone and there is nothing on the sd card about the weather channel. Is there a setting i need to check in the menus or something to do with my sd card to make it work?
Weather channel has 2 apks
Sure you didn't DL the widget?
You must have an extX partition for it to work. The applicaion will be installed to /system/sd/app
once, i make the partition, will it automaticaly switch any already downloaded apps into that folder and future ones or will i need to change a setting for future apps and manually move current apps?
ok so i created an extX3 partition of 500mb. After a few reboots there is no folder on sd cd card called /system/sd/app
the only two folders on the sd card are
1)tmp
2)LOST.DIR
both of these are empty i am fairly certain that my phoes internal memory is still going down when i download apps. I will do another test (download a bunch of games (keep a log of memory before and after downloading)) I will post
1)initial memory (before downloading anything else)
2)memory after downloading
3)memory after reboot

You won't see the items on your sdcard, they are in a partition that is hidden from windows/mac os x/(linux?)- go to terminal and do
cd /system/sd
ls
if there is an app folder do
cd app
ls
and see if there are any apps there

Yes it is working, notice how your sdcard secondary space dropped 10mb after downloading some apps. The internal memory dropped .24mb, but that is because the market cache probably grew, so yes a2sd is working
alright cool, I was just confused because I thought it moved the Apps after a reboot but here it is pretty much going straight to the sd card.
I have another quick question which I don't think needs its own thread.
In the power control widget what is the middle icon (satillite looking thing)

In settings under location there is two gps options, network and gps. The gps toggle turns off the gps, not the network gps. Do you understand?
Okay I understand

Start with some info. Your phone, your rom, if you have an EXT partition or not. If you have a MT3G then the ROM you are using may by default not use apps2sd since its only needed with the G1. If you do not have an EXT partition then you will also not be able to use app2sd.

I've installed CM 4.1.11.1 and created an EXT3 partition on my SD Card using the recovery console, but when I install apps they seem to take up space on both my SD card AND my phone internal storage. I tested with a decent sized app such as Guitar Hero (4mb), which took about 3mb of my phone's storage, and 5mb of my SD card. Is there any way to make it completely use my SD card? Or is this normal?
Not using actual Apps2SD, using the one built into CM

I just got my g1 not so long ago and decided to start rooting. I've gone so far as installing cyanogens newest rom. and i just finished partitioning my sd card to ext2/3 successfully. but when i flashed the rom again all my apps were gone. on the market it says i have them but i cant uninstall or open them because they're not installed on the phone. any help on how to get my apps working again?
Hello Everyone, I was hoping someone could tell me if there was a quick fix or if I need to do a reinstall & add something that I didn't add.
I noticed today, my phone telling me it is running low on space & when I checked, it said I only had 9 megs left on the phone memory, however it did show I still had 465 megs on the secondary sd memory free.
I decided to try & install an app to see if the sd memory would go down or the phone memory. Well, the phone memory went down, but not the sd secondary.
I'm looking at the storage & unmount sd card & format sd card are "grayed out"
I also do have a \system\apps folder with some apps, along with the same one under \sd card\system\apps which that also has some apps.
Is there something I can do that can fix this? Or something else I need to check?
The only thing that I didn't do originally was create a swap partition.
Thanks
i believe if u reboot your phone all apps get thrown into ext partition. also try using cachemate , that will free up tons of space on your phone

If you want to have your apps on your sd card then you need an ext partition. You cannot currently house your apps on your sdcard.
My HTC Hero is running low on memory space (I have Apps2sd installed also, but it can't move all apps), so I partitioned my 8G SD card with ROM manager, with 32M swap, 1g ext4 and the rest being FAT32.
After reboot, I still only see 160M of internal memory from settings, which is the original, and about 6.1G on SD card. That means it already took out the 1G, but why I don't see it as internal memory? Is it because of ex4? I tried ex3 too and got the same.
I have backed up the original SD card, but have not copied it back to the partitioned SD card yet. Anything else I need to do in order to see the expanded Internal Memory?
Thanks in advance!

Your sdcard space has nothing to do with internal memory. What you need to do if you want to have more space is 1 or 2 of a few different things: go into root explorer, move apps from /data/app to /system/app; Use Firerat's Custom MTD Partitions
either of those should give you more internal memory.

I read that after partitioning the SD card, apps will be installed into the ext3/4 partition automatically. But that's not the case after I partitioned. Then I found I need to install app2sd+ instead of app2sd. Is that true?
Where do I download app2sd+ ? do I need to flash a different ROM? I am having CM 6.2.0 now.
Thanks!

CM6.2 has native apps2sd. Go to settings>CM settings>Application settings and select "Allow application moving", then select "External" for Isntall location.
Also, you can move apps that don't install or allow swap to the SD via Titanium Backup.
Just be warned that any apps that have widgets lose widget functionality if you move them to the SD.

Does it install ALL apps to SD card? I thought it's the same as App2sd, only moving those apps that specified by the developers as movable. And there are many apps that can't be moved to external.
My understanding is by partitioning the SD card, the EXT2/3/4 part is considered as part of the "internal memory" so that ALL apps will be installed here, thus free the real internal memory and lead to better performance.
The problem is it doesn't work after partitioning and I read that it needs app2sd+ or app2sd EXT to work, and I am having trouble finding them...
Thanks any way.

Not all, but most. Like BrandoKC said, you can move more apps to the sd using Titanium Backup. Don't move anything with a widget you use, or it won't work anymore.

CM's built-in Application Management can only move those apps that you can move by app2sd. I don't see such feature on the free Titanium Backup. My 160M internal memory is constantly under 20M of free memory.
I heard all the good things about using partitioned SD card. I have partitioned my card but that alone doesn't seem to work. it seems I also need to install some customized ROM on top of my CM 6.2 so that apps will be automatically installed on SD?
Thanks!
The free version of titanium does have it. I just used it on my fiances phone last weekend.

samsung galaxy SL-GT-I9003, running froyo 2.2.1
Since froyo allows moving apps2sd I have got a sandisk 32gb class 4 micro sd card & wonder if there is any downside to run an app from the sd card?
Should I partition the sd card for my data & apps separately?
If we update to a new ROM or firmware, and the APPs are on the SD Card do we have need to back up APPs ever again?
all my apps are on my sd card, there isnt really a downside, you dont need to make a partition.
The only thing is. if you accidently format your sd card, your apps will go. it saves memory on the phones internal card, allowing for a quicker response.
Just be sure to make a backup with titanium backup.
I do a backup every week, because im a constant flasher, but you can just make a backup and store it on your pc, just to be safe.
Flashing a new rom wont delete your apps unless you do a WIPE version or do it thru Odin. but if you do flash a new rom just make a backup anyway it only takes 5 mins.
If i Helped, Why not say Thanks ??

so you mean to say the apps are on the external card but each application save its cache on internal phone sd card.
There are some apps that although you can move them to SD do not work properly when you do. Among these are many home screen widgets and some live wallpapers.
Oh I didnt know that, good I will keep that in mind.

Yes i forgot to mention that, but the ones you want on your homescreen like live wallpapers, music player whatever just leave on internal.
And yes i think the cache (or something like that) is saved to the internal, because when i remove my sd card, my apps still show but just wont launch....
Read many other post & checked my external sd card it does not have any of the moved apps, instead apps2sd moves the files to internal sd only.
So wondering whats the real use of apps2sd when you have limited internal sd space in my case only 1.51gb, I thought it is moving the apps to external sd which is 32 gb card I bought for this purpose only.
My phone shows 181mb left only.
Hi, everyone.
I have a question if somebody is able to copy or move applications to external sd card either with rooted stock or custom rom. What applications or mods did you do to enable such option?

Im having the same problem as well. my Internal storage is half way getting there and None of the apps that I installed does not have the option to be transferred to ext_SD
Ok, after 2 days of searching over the web and forums I found a workaround for moving apps on external SD (working only on rooted phones).
1) Download and install FolderMount program from Google Play store.
2) Open the program, tap on "+", enter name (any alias), source folder of the app, and destination (external sd with the same folder already created or choose automatic method), then tap on check mark.
3) Wait till the program copies the application to external sd and creates link. After you need to tap on pin icon and it'll turn to green.
If you get some notification, just click "Yes".
P.S.
Don't delete the folder with the moved app in your internal memory, as it'll also delete the app from external SD. If you want to check if the program moved, unpin the program and browse to the app folder in your internal memory and you won't see the files there. FolderMount creates the link to the application in internal memory to trick Android. Every time Android requests the application, it passes the request to its internal memory and after goes via the link to external SD. That is the only trick that worked for me.
I read on the butterfly 901s/e forum thread and it said something about fat32
I have Kingston 64gb formated in FAT32, don't know if Android works properly with exFAT or ext format. You can't format 64gb SD card in FAT32 with Windows, but you can install other partition wizards like Minitool Partition Wizard to format it.

If you mean "set pm install location" command, then no. I tried that trick, however programs didn't even install on internal memory after I used the command. I left it as default "0".

Thanks a lot. I think I can do everything I need to do with foldermount so it should all work out.

Yes, works with microSDXC up to 64gb in FAT32, couldn't manage to use external sd card in other formats like exFAT or NTFS.
