G1 browser vs Droid Browser... - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My work has free wifi and I have never been able to get logged in to use it with my G1. It has a page where you accept a useage policy then it redirects you to the companies home page. On the G1 it gets to the page where it says redirecting then it gets stuck and it has to get to the next page before it is allowed to browse anywhere else. Yesterday my friend tried for the first time with his Droid and it went right through the whole process without a problem and was browsing on the wifi easily.
Is there an upgrade to the browser with 2.0 that is allowing it to get through better? So if I upgraded my G1 to 2.0 it would work? That is the only thing I can think of. Any other thoughts?

have you tried some of the third party browsers on the market / online.
Of the top of my head you have three.
Steel
Dolphin
Opera Mini (Opera mobile is in beta i beleive but not avalable to the public yet)

Thanks for the suggestion. None of them get any further than the stock Android browser on the G1. I had my friend who has a Cliq give it a shot as well and his gets stuck on the same spot as mine at the "redirecting" point. Like I said though, the Droid on the 2.0 browser just speeds on through and doesn't get stuck when redirecting. I am thinking about tossing a 2.0 rom on my G1 and testing to see if it fixes that problem.

What ROM are you running?
I remember this has been an issue since launch, however I just tried with the stock browser and it worked just fine this time. I will have to use more work WiFi now that I know it works. I am on the Dwang 1.15 rom.

It looks like Cyanogen has got the Eclair browser working in his latest build (not out yet)
http://twitter.com/cyanogen

Use devicescape/easy wifi
Load an app called easyWIFI on your G1 (used to be Devicescape) It is specifically set up to bypass those login pop-ups that you can't get to on most mobile browsers. I've been using it on my Nokia S60s for a couple years and it's great.
You can even use it with 'hard' logins, like Starbucks, and with secure wep/wpa/wpa2 routers. You can load it on your PC too.
www.easywifi.com

Thanks for the tips. I will check out that Easywifi app.
I had been using TheOfficial DONUT rom and was unable to get past that screen in the browser. This past weekend I loaded the latest CYN rom that is apparently using the 2.0 browser. Doing this allowed me to get through the browser authorization screen 100%. This seems to confirm that the problem was simply with the pre2.0 browser, since CYN with 2.0 browser and a droid can access it just fine.
I have to say that I prefer TheOfficial DONUT rom over the CYN roms. I went months with no Force Closes on The official rom and with CYN I always seem to get more and also have issues with apps working properly. I assume that it is partly due to the CYN rom being so customized and probably some opperator error in there too.
I hope at this point that somebody works something out that allows us to install the 2.0 browser in any 1.6 rom. That way I could use TheOfficial DONUT but have the 2.0 browser too. Not the end of the world if this doesn't happen though.
Thanks again for the tips and feedback.

It's been out for a while and it's not all that great. It's a little slow and the navigation controls kinda suck.

They released the first non-beta version today. It had a couple of glitches but I think they've got them taken care of with an update that should be out any time.
I actually prefer it over the other browsers I've tried on my Fuze. I haven't had any problem with speed or navigation. Also, since it's got the same base as the iPhone's Safari, you get the iPhone version of a lot of sites, which is usually superior to the regular version or mobile version.
I think browsers are one of those things that everyone has their own preference on but if you're unhappy with Opera, Skyfire or IE, it's definitely worth trying out.

I was unaware that this one was non-beta. I'll give it another try.
It locked up my Fuze.
yeah using facebook iphone site on it is nice. alot better then normal mobile site
According to their website, there are a lot of feature improvements, including flash support:
It has been one year since our first public preview was released, and today we made Iris Browser 1.1.0 available for download! There are many surprises waiting inside, including support for the Flash Lite ActiveX control, big performance gains, reduced memory usage, preliminary RSS and SVG support, the highest Acid3 score of any shipping mobile browser, and HTC accelerometer support. Download a copy now, and we’ll update you with more of the new features and plans in the near future!
I've personally been using the prior version and really enjoyed it. If this new version provides the features promised, it will likely be awesome.

Did you install version 1.1.1 or 1.1.0? 1.1.1 is supposed to fix the lock-up problem. They were pretty responsive when I emailed them so if you're having problems, let them know.

When I installed 1.1.0 yesterday it asked me if I wanted to install the update 1.1.1 and so for its a decent browser have to play with it more..
so far this has been awesome. i'll take the crappy interface, because it renders wonderfully. i love the little bulge thing when you click links.
Downloading and installing now. Will try all day tomorrow. Will be great to have a nice browser to use instead of PIE or Opera. Those two have given people a lot of proxy problems and flash content pages issues.
EDIT: First try and it just froze my FUZE.
I just started hating it with all my heart
I just can't use it. Every time I run it, it takes about a minute and it resets my phone. The controls are horrible. I can't believe you have to go through a couple of menus to actually enter an address. Also, I went to Youtube and flash content didn't work. And then guess, phone restarted.
Some of you guys seem happy with it, and some very unhappy like me, could you confirm the version you are using. I downloaded 1.1.1, wondering if we are all running the same at this point or if some of you still on 1.1.0. The one i'm using is supposed to fix the lock problem like mentioned before, but NOT.
This browser has extremely bad issues with memory usage... I will be running it (by itself, nothing else) for ~5 minutes, go to a few web sites, and it will invariably say "Out of memory" and exit automatically. I do like how things are rendered, however the zoom functionality is garbage compared to opera, and even clicking on a link takes longer than opera (although the animation/confirmation that you've actually clicked a link is nice).
all in all, i think it has a way to go, as the memory issue is something that makes it completely unusable as a daily browser (unless loading 1 website and quickly exiting is your cup of tea, heh).
i have the latest official adobe flash cab installed and i can't get flash to work.. anyone have luck with this?
Nice browser, I installed 1.1.1 last night, it really works nice, overall very smooth, the UI can take some changes, but overall performance was very solid.
I installed this browser, and it looked like it was about halfway through loading a page and would lock up.. had to soft reset. several times. I uninstalled it pretty quickly.
pat
Installed/uninstalled it twice last night--uninstalled permanently this morning. It would work for one webpage then lock up the phone. I checked and was using the most 1.1.1 - I agree the interface is not good, having the URL entry be clicks away from the start page was not wise in a broswer app. This app is not ready for broad usage. Although it did lock up on different pages it seemed to particularly find the New York Times page problematic.
Everyone do themselves a favor and change the cache directory to the storage card.
On NATF 4.3, it works perfectly. Nice use of webkit on winmo!!
FYI... version 1.1.2 is now out. They seem to be incorporating fixes pretty rapidly so if you've had problems with it, I suggest testing the latest version to see if their resolved.

Pandora on G1 : 50% loaded so far...

I have been missing Pandora since I switched from my iPhone to the G1 and I must say I got really excited when I saw the FlashPlayer embeded in the latest Hero build. So, I decided to try to get it working.
I loaded up the mini player from pandora.com and saved the .swf file to my sdcard and launched FlashPlayer (using Astro's application manager). It found the swf and even begins to load. I get about 50% and then I am greated with a message saying that it will not work if I don't share my info (aka a cookie with my subscriber number)
If I can get the browser to let me log in and set a cookie, I might be able to get to the next step. Unfortunately, Pandora.com does browser detection and flags the android browser as unsupported.
Any ideas?

Search around and see if there is an easy way to change the browsers useragent. I'm not sure if it's possible, but by the sounds of it, that's what needs to be done.
Maybe try to get a hold of the guy who made the "Steel" web browser, the one available in the market. He has a setting to allow you to set the browser to be recognized as a Desktop or iPhone browser.
Nice work here though, didn't think Flash was that far along on the Hero build.
Does anyone know where/how the browser stores cookies? Could get the cookie strings from a desktop, insert them into the phone (sqlite db, maybe?)
i actually emailed pandora the other day asking about android apps. here is the response. (email and name removed to prevent possible spamming)
Thanks very much for writing. We really appreciate your vote for the G1. I just got a G1 myself and would love to have Pandora on it. I can tell you that we have started working on an application for the Android platform. However, I do not have a time line or ETA for when it will be released.
Please stay tuned to our "On the Go" page for updates: www.pandora.com/on-the-go
Thanks for listening in the meantime!

[Q]How can you enable full browsing in SGS

hey guys. got my SGS today, loving it. and been playing with it since 5 hours non stop now lol
anyways, coming from a nokia n900, im used to the browser showing sites in full web version, not mobile version.
is it possible somehow to make it appear like that in SGS browser too?
cheers
go to the browser url bar, and type about:debug and enter.
nothing will happen, but now you can go to the browser settings from the menu, and scroll all the way down. there will be new menu options there. find the one which allows you to choose between desktop/android/iphone display for websites.
this is a little bugged, because for me after i did this from a fresh rom installation, i can access espn soccernet perfectly. but if i revisit the page it will load up the mobile version.
to view desktop pages permanently try skyfire browser from the market.
awesome maaan! thanx a bunch!!! u think this will work in froyo 2.2 also?
p.s i tried youtube.com desktop version. upload loading the video, the browser crashes. and kicks me to home screen.
so i suppose some sites are not quiet ready to be run n desktop mode on SGS.
perhaps froyo wioth 10.1 flash will solve this

Oddly enough with the stock browser and present 2.2 you cannot access the User Agent setting with About:debug.
Yea they removed it in 2.2, but why? I think it should be an option that is easy to access for everyone. This phone handles desktop sites almost as well as a PC, the big screen actually makes a lot of mobile sites look rubbish.
Sometimes we want mobile sites to save bandwidth, other times we want the full experience.
In Dolphin Browser HD you can get an addon called "Desktop Toggles" which adds a switch on the right toolbar for easy switching between desktop/mobile modes. With some performance and other small improvements it would be a perfect replacement for the stock browser.
One other annoyance with the stock browser is that even with it set to desktop you are still often sent to the "Touch" version of the site and then have to scroll to the bottom and click on full site link. Shame there is not a command line or script to set it to desktop proper.
With the screen real estate on the Galaxy S we should be given the option to view full desktop versions of websites. Often the mobile sites just don't cut it. We want the full version of websites on our phones.

Setting Default Browser UAString to "Desktop"

Ok I have Froyo 2.2 running on my Captivate but I cannot force the browser to browse pages in desktop mode instead of wap/mobile mode.
I tried about:debug from the browser to change the advanced settings but the UAString value is not displayed in the list at all, the last time is Set JS flags.
Does anyone really know how to set this on 2.2 with the captivate?

you need to mess with the framework-res.apk file.

Thanks for the response I was looking for something a little more informative, are you telling me I need to edit files in a package, etc? Just to enable this?
Probably the easier solution would be just to use the Dolphin HD browser and set the user agent to desktop if all you want is to avoid the re-direct to the mobile sites.
I've done that, and Skyfire as well, but I am not sure how flash 10.1 works with the other browsers or if it works with all of them. I know Skyfire intercepts and tries to play them with its only build.
I am also curious why the UAString value is omitted from the debug settings on the default browser to begin with.
I also found that I had to actually manually install 10.1 it was not installed after updating to 2.2
I am also a little disappointed with the sept.11 build of 2.2 I installed, it does not feel faster than the stock 2.1 as a matter of fact web browsing is worse, and so is screen transitioning on the desktop compared to 2.1. Not sure why.
-i have the same problem, i try to load a site and i get the mobile version , and i try the skyfire, dolphin browser hd and nothing ...

I used Dolphin HD to watch a full episode of the Daily Show from the website, so I know for a fact flash works with it, and keeps it from re-directing to the mobile site. Must be some kind of EUE.
Open the browser then on the address type:
about:debug
Then go to settings, scroll all the way down and enable normal rendering.
That's it.

-don't work!!!
I know Hulu is blocking **** so thats expected but its still detecting Dolphin and Skyfire with the correct Strings set.
I know Flash is working but since 2.1 had some sort of flash support previously its hard if the new one is working if it does not show "HD" options.
Since setting UAString cannot be done via debug menu for the default browser, in 2.2 on the build on my captivate I will just wait it out and see if someone figures it out I guess.
Its odd that even with skyfire set to desktop, that Hulu can detect the version still.

It works for me
not for all sites.
This may be because the website uses other aspects besides just UAString. For instance, even though both a PC and a phone have flash 10.1 I am positive there is still a way for a website to indicate which is a mobile version. Also it can use screen res, IP address (unlikely), and other factors. Most likely it is flash player having its own useragent.

In regards to the framework-res.apk...
There is an xml file in there that has the user agent string that our phones are using. I don't remember exactly where it is. perhaps framework-res.apk/scripts/???/
Like I said I'm not sure where it is. It is a lot easier to mess with it on stock than it is on Cognition, Sheps, etc.
Hulu will ONLY work if we are able to change that setting. Skyfire, Opera, etc wont because it still has the string settings.

ok, there are several things I need to point out about this post
a) flash 10.1 will work with non-stock browsers like Dolphin HD, Skyfire uses it's own method to circumvent flash and I don't believe there's a way around it
b) UAString is omitted probably because there is no real need to change that for most users, and the above method for "enable normal rendering" does prevent redirects to mobile, but it doesn't change the UAString (in mobile, it's more importat to have an option to switch to desktop mode than change the UAString)
c) flash 10.1 was installed across every other person's device running 2.2, likely you had an update in the market, but everyone else who installed 2.2 had it. Also, android 2.2 != flash 10.1. Android 2.2 is the version of the OS capable of running 10.1, but there are requirements and licensing issues, so it doesn't necessarily come preloaded on every 2.2 device
d) where are you getting this "september 11th" build date from? I assume you're looking at kernel version [email protected] #1? that means a user named "jetaek.lee" made a build on a COMPUTER NAMED "sep-11". if you knew how to check build.prop, you would see this build was made on 9/21 and that the "sep-11" name showed up on the 2.1 kernel built in June. And considering it was only leaked at the start of october, it was only a week or two old at the time. I'm sick of people complaining about literally the dumbest thing imaginable.
e) the "laggy browser" issue has already been acknowledged and there is a SIMPLE fix available in the forums, search for it.
FWIW, Skyfire uses both the regular flash 10.1 as well as its own streaming implementation. So, you can use the standard flash for most websites but if there is a flash video that is slow you use the skyfire converted stream.

- Yes, I concur
@Kaik541
Well I have only had this phone for 3 days so I cannot say I am an expert on it but I can form a reasonable opinion on the differences in performance in a pre-released leaked version of 2.2 and the stock 2.1 and I am not entirely sure that is complaining about the stupidest thing.
Everything else however you posted I kinda knew but was not sure of hence the post. =)
I agree will prob just stick will Skyfire or Dolphin (although Dolphin worked on fewer sites for me than Skyfire did.)
Will have to see if the release version of 2.2 is optimized.

[Q] Anyone have good luck using Firefox mobile?

Just curious. I've tried it on several different ROMs. Now that I'm on Slim 3.4 ICS, it seems to be responsive enough (was way too slow on the stock Froyo/GB!).
But unless I manually kill the FF process, it constantly uses 4-5% CPU, even after 'closing' the browser.
I'm not sure if this issue is specific to the Captivate, but if it wasn't I would think Mozilla would have fixed it a long time ago...
It worked fine for me when I was using it, but I preferred Chrome Beta. I can't use Chrome now since I went back to a Gingerbread ROM, but Chrome is what I would use.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA
I used it a couple of times, but it seems to be made more with tablets in mind. I don't renege my exact issues, but some sites were unreadable practically.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA
I'm still using Dolphin Mini.
using Chrome Beta on aokp. the tabs design is very well.
Yeah, I've tried quite a few different phone browsers.
I use Firefox on PC (tried switching to Chrome a few times, but always end up back with FF), and it seems like using FF mobile is just about the only way to get my bookmarks synced between PC and Android. I haven't tried the Dolphin HD plugin yet that's supposed to sync with FF, but the market reviews don't look to great for it.
I was really hoping I could get Google Bookmarks to sync with any of the Android browsers, since there is a desktop FF plugin that works reasonably well... But syncing Google Bookmarks with any phone browser seems to be impossible at this point. From what I've read, it worked OK up until Google changed something with the interface a few months back. I guess there's not really an API for it.
for your FF proces problem running at 4-5%, try downloading ES Task Manager from the market, give it root privs in the settings then removing firefox from your startup. then all you have to do is click optimiza and it will kill all the non system processes for you. just a little tip
I'm using Opera Mobile 12. It has turbo setting while not on WiFi to minimize network traffic. Fast and compatible with sites and Flash. Not sure about bookmark sync, may be it's there. I think it's fastest and most reliable.
