There is one reason why I have never used my Kaiser as a music/media player - the lack of a headphone jack. I am now look at upgrading to a Rhodium, but again HTC fails to include the most basic of requirements. pfff
I know that I can get a headphone adaptor, or even use bluetooth, but the problem for me is that whenever the usb plug falls out, as it invariably does, or the bluetooth signal drops, I instantly upset everyone within 100m by blasting crappy tinny sounding music at them through the phone speaker. Of course, 3.5mm jacks don't have the same habit of just falling out.
Therefore, is there any way that I can set up the phone so that when music or media is playing (usually through Coreplayer) the phone speaker is disabled?

Plug in headphones? Otherwise if your not using the speakerphone how would you hear anything?
I've used a 3.5mm to mini usb cable and adapter, they both worked fine. I liked the cable better since i worried less about it breaking in my pocket. Its not the exact same one i am using right now but this one is only a penny.

but therein lies the problem - because the headphone output is mini-usb, it is always at risk of falling out (far more so than a 3.5mm jack).
Yea life is tough that way. I've yet to have anything just fall out of my mini usb port myself.
I suppose you could write a script that detects if anything is plugged in to the usb port ala Audio Booster, and auto mute if nothing is detected. But i don't think i've seen an auto mute app or anything like that.

You could fire it up set it for an hour or so and listen away w/out fear, in theory at least.

Dongles. In-line adapters. Proprietary headset ports. If it’s an audio port on a mobile handset and it’s not 3.5mm, it’s junk. As we declared back in May, we’re done with all of it. Now HTC, sire of the T-Mobile G1, myTouch, and countless other smartphones plagued by non-3.5mm jacks, is done with it too.
If you’ve been keeping up with your Android handset news, you might already know that the HTC Hero will be the first HTC-made Android handset with a 3.5mm jack. As it turns out, it’s just the first of many; beginning with the Hero, HTC is moving away from requiring users to pump audio through their modified miniUSB port.
We’d heard this mentioned as a possibility at past press events. This was HTC’s response when we reached out for comment:
The vast majority of devices we launch after Hero will have a 3.5mm jack. Devices that we have already announced but that still come out after Hero will not necessarily be a part of this change.
So it sounds like we may still see a few handsets hit the shelves with worthless audio ports - but aural salvation is on the way. This is a hugely important move for HTC and, seeing as they’re the most fruitful supporter of the platform so far, for Android. People like using their own headphones, but hate carrying around 2 extra inches of an oh-so-easy-to-lose adapter cable. If you make using headphones a pain, the media playback functionality of the handset/platform tends to be abandoned. Long live the 3.5mm port!
I prefer extUSB.
It's smaller, allows for remote control for music and also can be used for tv out with sound.
3.5mm ruins the looks of the phone and is unnecessary... Just use a small adapter or HTC E100 which has remote music controls.
I also prefer the usb over the 3.5mm jack...been using it for over two years.

I think they will not only implement the standard 3.5mm Jack, but the one with 4 Contact Layers that also enables you to use a Remote.

agreed about the 4 contact jack.
I don't think they will "eliminate" the USB Port in general since it's the easiest way to charge & sync our devices both at the same time.
Either they will go with the 4 Contact Jack or maybe a composite of USB & three Contact 3.5mm Jack... although the latter would take more time to develop/implement into the existing Software (TouchFLO3D & HTC Sense).
well i think the devices comes with less conectivity
IRDA, BT,wireless carrier services, WIFI, USB, EXT-USB, miniUSB, 3.5, 2.5, and all the variant for the audio jack.
and now the devices comes with BT Wifi and EXTUSB... what da?
hehehe if the device only has ext-usb without 3.5 how can you listen to music or videos with earphones HQ (neodimium magnets) by AIWA or SONY, Yamaha Bose or so much more!.... and cradled to the wall...????

Its better to get separated 3.5 only for listen music and EXTUSB for hands-free wired, charge and sync.

The problem with having extUSB type of slots are because they increase the chances for accidental detachment of the plugs. Every device I ever used that required an adapter really sucked because the headphone always got disconnected easily.
Furthermore, the configuration is not practical for people who charge their phones while listening to music.
People don't use blue tooth for music and videos because of the battery issues and the occasional connection drop.
Next, having a splitter adapter is annoying because you have to carry it with you.
Furthermore they need to create lockable extUSB adapters in which the adapter will snap on the phone and never ever detach which makes the adapter a more practical and plausible idea.
Hell..... it's about time....

The other model can be used as digital to analog converter but only on pc . Has anyone tried something like this on leo?
I have used the E11, did improve the sound a little, but it would not be as good as using a USB DAC. Do note that the HD2 doesn't support connecting a USB DAC, so can't help you with that. A E5 would be a cheap and tiny upgrade in the sound quality.
Better to use EQ through something like PowerAmp. Occam's razor is best when it comes to the audio chain.
I tried poweramp ,neutron ,dsp manager and in the end when it comes to sq and funcionality in the end I think best way to go is default player and dsp manager. When hd2 was new and out I think I saw people managing to use it as usb hub. Or is just my memory playing tricks on me? Wouldn't something like that work with usb dac on hd2?
i have a firestone fireye mini which works quite well with the HD2 and is super small aswell.

It is a Bluetooth receiver which allows you to plug into it, a stereo or in my case a pair of nice existing (non-bluetooth) headphones.
I've had bluetooth headphones before, but they were expensive and not all that comfortable. I am not a fan of ear plug type headphones and much prefer a good, well fitting headphone.
I already have a good set at work, were I can completely drown out the noises in the office and concentrate on coding. With the N7 having Bluetooth (the Kindle Fire didn't), this becomes an option for me instead of using my phone.
Note that the picture is a little deceiving since it doesn't have an internal battery and the cable for power which is NOT shown is actually needed.

The Mw600 is great because you can use any set of wired headphones in it to create a bluetooth experience! And the MW600 doubles as a FM receiver. The clip on unit is a bit touchy because it uses touch tech to control the volume, but the play and media controls have dedicated buttons which works.
And dependant on your device you connect it to, you can also see track info on the clip. I use it on my Sensation and it works. The track info didn't work on my old Nexus One but I lived without it.

HBH-IS800 is too pricey, in that category I'd go with an Sony Smart Wireless Pro, also from Sony, but with integrated FM and MP3 Player (you can insert a msdhc card).
But my point was that the MW600 is about ~20 Bucks more and has all the advantaged a real headset brings. Controls (Play/Pause/Track Control/Volume), a Microphone, a Display that shows you caller ID and Playing Track, ..

Could I put my bog-standard wired headphones into these? The image examples show it being connected externally to a speaker, so I don't know if it has a headphone jack on the receiver.
Would be good if it does, would like to avoid plugging my headphones into the Nexus 7 directly because moving my finger around the screen makes a buzzing noise (interference in the 3.5mm jack from the screen I guess), bluetooth could probably eliminate this.

Love, Love, Love my MW600, it's worth every penny! I use it at work, at home and when I go on walks or hikes.

If you are referring to the SE MW600 then yes! You can put any standard 3.5mm headphones into the MW600. I use my Shure se215's and they are great!
Funny thing is I have the Amaze beats headphones and the Sol Republic Tracks HD, both have controls on the wires. And I plugged both of them in. While the music came through, neither of the headphone's buttons work. The Amaze headphones do not control the volume or anything and neither do the SOL Republic cans-which I kind of knew anyway because they are for "i" devices.
HOWEVER, using the MW600 I can use the bluetooth unit to stop/pause and volume control on it and it doesn't matter what headphones you plug in. Major win there again by the MW600!! :highfive:

Was actually talking about the Belkin receiver, but scratch that, the MW600 makes more sense! The fact it's portable and doesn't need mains power is a bonus too. Will be ordering that, thanks!
edit: I assume it outputs through bluetooth sound from games, video players, etc., and not just music, right?

Just to report back. The answer is YES, bt streaming is for games and movies as well, in the MW600 case anyways .
I have also successfully paired the MW600 with my PS Vita, just as an FYI.
FYI - MW600 will not play while charging, if that matters to you...I have the Creative WP-450 which can play while charging...

Also, a wireless receiver like the airport express works great . Especially if you are networked. I have an airport express attached to 3 home receivers . 2 with optical and one aux. I can stream to all of them synchronized and even use my computer to control each separately and use the nexus as a remote. Only issue with Bluetooth is you need to be fairly close or in line of sight to make it work reliably.

Got my MW600 today, quite impressed with it, and no buzzing from screen now! Only downside is the audio in MX Player is out of sync by a second, the lip-synch doesn't match with the video, is this easily fixed?

Did you try playing with the different settings? Like software acceleration or HW acceleration?
I honestly haven't watched the transformers movie with dialog to see if the vids and audio synch. I'll have to report back on Monday.

Just tried the Transformers movie, lip-synch is spot on. Guess it's just an isolated issue with MX Player, was worried for a moment it could have been because of wireless latency.
Only got S/W decoding available, probably because I'm playing an SD video? Going to try some alternative players.

Much cheaper than the Sony, much smaller, and streams for 10-12 hours per charge. The only drawback is that it doesn't have built-in FM radio. However I gladly trade that for the miniature size and weight (about the size of a quarter, and the weight of 2-3 quarters) ... Clip slides over the seem at the bottom of a tshirt and is plenty to hold it's tiny weight in place. Can hook it anywhere.
I know a lot of you are anxiously awaiting the voodoo port to our phone but I just wanted to let you know, in case you hadn't heard, that even our stock ROM supports external, driverless DACs and amps. I am using an ODAC and O2 headphone amp but I confirmed FiiO E7s also work so I presume any high-quality DAC will hook right up.
I just got an OTB host adaptor (micro to full size USB), plugged my DAC/amp into the USB and told the ROM (settings>Accessory> Audio Output mode (checked to use external speakers when plugged into a dock) and told the HDMI output to use stereo since I have only two ears and use headphones at work.
The sound, once you've bipassed the DAC internal to the phone is, as you might expect, exemplary- eerily crystal clear and quiet with outstanding dynamics. Since the ODAC is very efficient and the E7 is internally powered neither solution should have any major effect on battery life. Once you've heard an external DAC on this phone you'll feel as sad if you have to use the headphone jack again as you no doubt felt when you tried to use an old "tiny" phone as getting your GN2.
I was quite disappointed with the (for me) relatively poor pen support (I was expecting Newton - like integration), the missing multi-tasking, etc but this feature makes up for it all- if you like music, try it and I guarantee it'll bring a smile to your face whatever else is going on with your day. Poweramp and Music, by the way, support 320k VBR, FLAC and lossless AAC no problem- it just sounds wonderful.
Interesting! I've been really surprised at how great the sound is just using bluetooth audio in the car. Can you provide links/ specific models for these items? Found the FiiO E7 on Amazon, not bad pricewise. I have an OTG thingy I have used with my Nexus 7 but haven't tried it yet with the Note2. I'm using KKR headphones at home and could see going portable with the right setup. Also not above putting stuff together in a box, been playing with Arduino's lately.
Also, assuming the Note2 is the center of my future portable sound world (just got the 64G Sandisk at Best Buy) what format would you recommend for ripping my CDs? I brought some to work today to rip while working but haven't really looked at the various lossless solutions. I would like to get some kind of replaygain-like functionality. Currently using DeadBeef for my player but open to the best solution there too.
I use the fiio e17 . you need a great pair of cans to basically get the best sound.
(I am working on a project to create and 3d print a case that will contain the phone and the fiio. will keep you posted.
I finally tried connecting my Hot audio Dac destroyer (want to get a new dac) to this phone and it seems to work! Used it with my Akg q701's so I think I also need an external amp.
If the sound is coming out of the dac's headphone out is the internal dac of the phone bypassed or if not how do we do so?

This is relatively widely known, there is a USB audio thread here and it is mentioned in the Sound Quality thread here in the Note 2 subforums
I demonstrate it in the video below, and also did the same in my S3 video of the same kind. I'm using an RSA Intruder with mine, and get the Leckteron UHA-6S.MKII in the post in a few days to try out as well.
