Hello, thanks for reading. I am having trouble with the default terminal emulator on my rooted MyTouch running Cyanogen's latest build 4.2.11. Commands typed in terminal do not execute using the "enter" key on the soft keyboard, although entering them with the other keys appears to function as would be expected. Any ideas to get around this. Using other terminal emulators works fine, I just don't see the use in having multiple apps doing the same thing if the default should work. If I set an initial command in the app settings it will execute that. Any advice is appreciated thanks!
try "better terminal" (free version) or press the "ball + j" for emulating the enter-key.
regards,
U.
Hi,
I've got the same problem with my CyanogenMod 4.2.11.1 ROM as OP mentioned. Are more people experiencing this?
Also there isn't a "better terminal" free version on the market, but I'm guessing it doesn't make too big a difference which application we use for the terminal, right?
Cheers,
DT
Touch input
if either of you are using touch input try going to locale and switching back to the android keyboard. I had this problem just yesterday and this seemed to resolve the issue.
Hey I have the same issue.
I switched back to the original keyboard and now it works
However I cannot enter numbers now :S
Anybody else have this issue?
Thanks for the suggestions
Thanks all for the suggestions, I didn't even think that I was using an alternative keyboard. Here's what I found:
@Woodguy: ball as in "trackball+j" doesn't do anything for me whilst using the Touch Input keyboard but does when using the original. thanks for the suggestion.
@Budgetkuts ans Jazz: same here orig keyboard works fine.
So has anyone figured out if Touch input keyboard works on the original emulator yet? It just seems silly to have to emulators, one for each keyboard?
Ok this is strange - Using the touch input keyboard I have to use trackball + j for enter and then it works.
The enter works on the Android keyboard but not numbers lol
What is going on?
I use ball + m as enter when using the HTC keyboard with the terminal in CM.
Ball + m
This works great. Odd that enter key wont work. Anyhow it works great so thanks for this post.
Trackball+ 'J' is the key
Thanks everyone for the suggestions sorry for the delay...just like me to get what I need and not acknowledge my resources. Thanks!

I searched the forum trying to find a way to stop the virtual keyboard from popping upp as soon as I select an input box in the opera web browser. So I was hoping you guys could help me.
oh btw, atm - I suck on wm, but Im very keen on learning so if you have any newbie tips for me that would be great too.

Can't answer ur question, but am gonna ask another - if you don't mind... "does the on-screen keyboard come up when the hardware keyboard is opened too?"
AFAIK this is a persistent problem, but there is a null keyboard without any keys which wont get in your way when it pops up.
http://freewareppc.com/utilities/nullkeyboard.shtml
Surur
yes, thats the problem! it does so when its open. wouldnt mind if it did when closes
thanks for the link to the null keyboard, unfortunatly it didnt work. Ille see if I cant find another one
okey, I tried "Phm null keyboard", it worked but made the icon flick and looked strange so I removed it
Doesn't bother me just hit a button on the hardware keyboard and it dissapears
someone else who has a tip?
Same problem since years and generations of WM
I don't recognize it anymore. One tab on the hardware-keyboard and it is off again.
Pls. This can't be difficult to fix for a smart person.
The easiest fix currently known has already been stated.
Place the cursor into a text box, and allow the on-screen keyboard to pop up. Then slide the phone open and expose the hardware keyboard. Next hit the space key, and then slide the phone closed.
Problem solved until you bring the on-screen keyboard up again.

Yes ofcourse but it would be nice to somehow disable it from popping up automaticly
I don't see the big problem about this issue. Does the keyboard stay up on the Xperia? I know on my device all I do is hit the text box and start typing on the hardware keyboard and the virtual disappears as soon as I hit the first key.

here's a reg tweak

it does bother me, but as soon as i press a key on the keyboard it goes away... i've come to live with it. i use skyfire most the time anyways

I tried that and could get no virtual keyboard to come up even when I wanted one. Had to change the value back again.
My Droid 1 has a direction pad on the slide out keyboard which makes it nice for moving the cursor when entering in text instead of using your finger.
Does anyone know of a keyboard that can be installed that has a directional pad included? I got fat fingers and moving the cursor is hard enough lol. I'm running a few releases behind the newest Vegan build (just haven't backed up everything yet).
Thanks!
Bryan
(just realized this might want to be moved to the general section, not themes and apps.... sorry)
Smart keyboard use cursor keys.
Smart keyboard pro
Anyone actually managed to use them
I installed smart keyboard and Ultra keyboard but even when enabled the don't replace the existing keyboard. ( Vegan5.1 )
Using it now with tnt lite 3.1.2
Install with mod as discussed in other threads
Thumb keyboard is great for this tablet. Has cursor keys, and is easy to use. Can setup the layout for different size devices too.
Thanks for confirmation, I'll look for it

Do you actually know how to enable the keyboard? You have to select the checkmark in settings to let your tablet know it is available but to actually use the keyboard... You open something with a text box and then long press in the box. A popup should come up with input method as a selection. Tap that and all your keyboards will be there to pick from.
I only say this because I don't think you were doing the input method, change the keyboard thing...
Yes, I have them enabled the but I don't get the pop up to sellect the keyboard when I want to type. ( Working fine on my Desire phone)
Update, stupid me - long press in the text box
I am using thumb keyboard also and it has a great directional pad and seems to have great support. But either its the touch screen of the gtab or thumb keyboard cuz there is some serious issue of "lag" or lack of response. I am actually blaming the grab touch screen cuz I find it unresponsive in other places at times.

There was a thread awhile ago about touchscreen sensitivity, and a calibration apparently at boot. Search for 'calibration.ini'. It fixed the problem for lots of people.

I have found the directional keys on occasion to be a little slow myself. If you want to do the calibration of the screen just create a empty text file named calibration.ini and place it in the internal sdcard. I have one on the external also because I can never remember where it looks for it. Then reboot you tablet without touching the screen and it will do it's thing. You won't see it do anything, but it seems to work.
thumb keyboard
i also use thumb keyboard. goto handango to purchase it. less than 2 bux and its the best keyboard for gtab
ill have to give these a try out! Thanks!

Saw the video of it, looks great. Searched for it but can't find that version yet. Hope it will show up as an update soon.
OK, what am I doing wrong...
I installed several different keyboards (the free versions until I know they work for me) and I can not get any of them to be selected. I go into the settings and I see them listed and no matter how many times I press the checkbox they will not select. If I go into the settings for any of these new keayboards I get a force close.
Running TNT Lite 4.10 now. Same thing was happening on older versions.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

That is a known issue with TnT. There settings menu doesn't let you select keyboards. I don't use TnT anymore but there is a way to change the settings app to the normal Android type, select the keyboard, and then there is a way to go back to the TnT settings menu and they stick. Pain in the A.. You can't just change the settings menu and leave it because it hoses up other things. There are a couple other ways I think people do it but you just need to search for "alternate keyboards" or something like that.
I personally can't stand anything TnT and run vegaN.
I get a force close when using either Smart Keyboard Pro or Thumb Keyboard. Force closes only began after repartitioning .....any ideas?? I was successfully running Smart Keyboard Pro before repartition.
So I <3 my NC running Customized Nookie Froyo 0.6.8 from the EMMC (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=938200), but the keyboard drives me a bit nuts, especially the landscape textbox in notepad apps! I have tried downloading replacements from the market, but even when I enable one, they don't replace the stock keyboard.
Anyone have any advice?
I got info on how to do it from the following link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=936539
I installed my replacement keyboard with help from this site:
...
Can't post links but if you google nook devs replace default keyboard I think you'll find it. Then just select the keyboard in Nook Color Tools.
Excellent, that let me change the keyboard, (specifically the terminal commands listed here: nookdevs dot com(slash)NookColor_Replace_the_Default_Keyboard). Thanks!
Now, anyone know how to get rid of the text box in landscape mode?
No terminal commands necessary! After installing alternative keyboard from market select it in the settings -> language & keyboard menu.
Then long-click on a text box and select Input Method.
Gingerbread Keyboard is the best one I've tried yet. I'm really hoping swype will open up their beta to non-phone devices soon though!
Aha! Thank you joshuajohn! that actually worked like a charm... and "Keyboard from android 2.3" by steven lin on the market got rid of the text box
Thanks all of you!
I installed the RenovateRom, which is really great. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2202696
But since they Removed the "select input method" notification. I dont know how to change the keyboard, i wanna use the original jellybean keyboard.
can anyone help me how to change the keyboard ?
thanks in advance.
What about if you just go into settings, language and input or something like that, then keyboard. Select keyboard and I would think you would be good.
On most keyboards, if you hold down on one of the buttons such as "spacebar" or "123" or one of ones on the bottom row, it will give you pop up a box to select your keyboard. On the stock JB keyboard, you hold the space bar to get the pop up.
hi,
i tried both. no way to change the keyboard on HTC ONE with your hints.
very strange.
someone any other idea ?
You can download something called "input select method" from the play store. I love the renovate roms but can never understand why they remove the input method selector.
Anyhow, hope that helps.

I have downloaded and run Remix OS Player on two different computers now and neither one of them has captured my hardware keyboard, I can use the onscreen keyboard but that really lessens the functionality and is half the point of having it run on a desktop. Can anyone advise as to how to resolve this issue? The options, advanced options, and the OS options are so dummy proofed it is impossible to do anything advanced. Is there config files I can edit or...?
I had this happen once right after installation and running the Google Play Store activator and couldn't login in to the Play Store because I couldn't type on the physical keyboard. I shutdown the player, restarted it, and then the problem went away. Might work for you.
Hi.
I have this too, regardless if I restart or not. I actually can't figure out what I have to change in language and imput options to have my keyboard back. The only thing I can do is using the virtual keyboard. I think this happened when I changed the language to french, or tried the virtual keyboard for the first time before then deactivating it. Since I can't find a reset config to default, I'm going to reinstall.
If anyone have a guess how getting my azerty hardware keyboard back, could he please explain ? I find the way the multiple language/imput options are displayed isn't very clear and whatever I do it doesn't work. I'm visibly not alone since this thread is already open, and it may be useful.
Edit : looks like the config files are not in the remix folder. After new installation in different folder, it's directly the same with the new separated machine.

There never was any actual ability to use the physical keyboard even though the settings say it's present. No amount of fiddling with the unintuitive settings seems to correct the problem. My keyboard is a Saitek Eclipse USB keyboard on Windows 7 x64. I imagine this must be a limitation of the emulator or some basic setting. The two systems I have run this on are very similar setups with the exception that the other one uses a PS2 mouse and keyboard. Shortcuts like CTRL + ALT to unbind keyboard and mouse function normally so why not typing inside the emulator?

I don't understand. Are you saying you have never been able to use your computer's keyboard ? Well sorry, you already said it sooner too. I didn't read it was the same person.
The thing is I could use it till two days ago, and I'm not the only one. I could type the physical keyboard at first start of the player without doing anything, it was default. Then probably messed up with the options I touched and can't have it back. RemixOS live or hardware installed have the keyboard detected and used as default. So does the player (except maybe you but it must just be that your keyboard isn't recognized or I don't know what.
Detection and options problem here. No lack in feature like I understand you are thinking.
I am saying that there has been not one moment I could use my computer's physical keyboard in Remix OS player, not for the very first initial run nor extracting it to a different folder, it works just fine on both computers for Windows use though. I am using the PS2 keyboard as I type this... I wouldn't think it would be difficult for the player to bind to a generic Human Interface Device or a USB keyboard... Both Mice work just fine so I figure it's just a bad config file or something. Hopefully someone figures it out soon as it's annoying to say the least.
Since I had it then lost it. Could one user or more, whose physical keyboard works since the beginning and who never changed anything to default config, screen all his/their language/keyboard relater configs please ? This may do.
Guess they don't care... oh well... Nox it is.
If this can help some people forced to use virtual keyboard too. After looking for a suitable virtual keyboard, I ended using Minuum Keyboard and Hacker's Keyboard app. The first takes the less place possible, and the 2nd looks like it has the better ratio between space used and easy access to all keys (it's sort of computer keyboard replica) ... waiting for this issue resolve if it is resolved a day, this will sorta do the trick ... But the problem really sucks.
@Saiber77 @dzeek @Esdeve - Sorry to be late with this reply. I did share your issue with our product manager and he's been working on a fix with the developer team. We believe we've isolated the issue to the Gaming toolkit causing some incompatibilities with certain hardware drivers and configurations. We're still in the middle of working on it but I'll definitely update when there's news.
@Saiber77 - And, we always read and care... just somewhat short on resources and we just finished a week-long public holiday here.
Thanks!

I just installed Remix Player on my Intel NUC and find that my keyboard is not recognized at all. I have a Corsair K70 keyboard that besides being an incredible mechanical keyboard works otherwise great under Windows 10. Hopefully Jide can provide a solution.
Wow, public holidays, devs know what it is and have that too ?
Whatever. I run on a laptop, but if you need info about hardware I'll give. Thought it's already done in the hardware thread. Sorry not being able to remember exactly since what action from me the keyboard stopped being recognized (and I don't think I tried the gaming toolkit, if I'm right about it being the d pad we can see on the right).
Hello. New user here.
This might seem weird but I also had the trouble of not being able to type anything inside the player (was trying to login to the Play Store but couldn't type in my email address). I can use the CTRL+ALT keys to get the pointer out and I see the pinch? option when I hold down the CTRL key. But when I installed the terminal/command window app, the keyboard began working inside the player (weird right?)

I just found this OS; but like others crtl+alt is working, but nothing else. Hope it can be resolved so I can use the keyboard to play games
how can i enable virtual keyboard?
yea the keyboard outside American is pretty bad,my French keyboard here is not supported very well, but the player is still in early beta stage so can't complain here.there are better emulator .
The dev team has been alerted to this thread and the issues being expressed here. I'll update when there are either fixes, or if there's something you guys could help us with to solve these keyboard issues.
As for holidays, our devs work at least through Saturdays and some work Sundays as well. However, for state appointed holidays, it's illegal to order staff to work, so it's entirely up to the staff.
Thanks again!

i used to have the same problem, but i get to fix it making this:
- Open Remix Player
- Go to the last button on the white bar on the right side of the screen emulator (3-dot button)
- On the new pop-up screen, go to settings, and change the keyboard shortcuts option to Emulator Device ( default)
- Go and check if Remix Player can recognize Keyboard Input, if not, go back and change again the keyboard shortcuts option to Virtual Device and check if now Remix Player recognize Keyboard Input.
I hope that this steps can solve the problem for everyone.
psd: I don't know if it's needed to do this every time the emulator runs, if the keyboard is not working each time the emulator starts, then i assume that its have to be done this if you want to get to work your keyboard.
If you have the issue, can please try @starfoxcom 's solution?
We think this could be possibly fix the issue. We are trying to fix this issue fundamentally.
