getting read to just swich to one of the hero roms at this point but figured before i do i'll see if any of these can be fixed.
This all started right shortly after the 1.51 update
First of all, I've wipped the phone and reinstalled twice now and left the battery out and did formats and tried new SD cards and all that and these are the problems i'm having.
-Camera will not save once finished. It takes the picture but it never saves to the SD card.
-Screen randomly changes orientation by itself when the phone is not moving at all. on a table
-Lots of random crashes
-and the worst. Certain apps will only download 50% of the file size when i download them making them never work, If this happens it's impossible to ever download it. Even after wiping and reloading the phone the same thing happened again. It also happens in updates as well. Killed mybackup pro and i had to go download it off rapidshare because i needed to make backups and the market download would never download properly.
So basically, is there any way to fix all these problems or am i better off just going through everything and flashing to a new rom now.
very strange, never had problems on JF1.5 or 1.51. Have you tried flashing JF1.5? If that's still causing problems I'd try Cyanogens build. Sorry I can't help much, but you've already tried everything I would have suggested
yeah i've posted on a few forums and did everything there. then figured i might as well post here as a last resort.
I did try going back to 1.5 and things worked fine, then went to 1.51 again and everything happened again. I'd like to be running the latest release of any custom rom, and hero looks awesome so i'm thinking that if i can't fix this i'll just go through everything to upgrade to hero
There are no major changes from my JFv1.50 release, except a few new kernel modules.

Hardly anything to update for, but whatever, have fun with hero Don't flash the SPL without the Radio (seems obvious but loads of people are spamming looking for a nonexistent solution to unbrick :< )
yeah i guess. Just me being myself wanting the lastest things. And don't worry i won't do that. been reading all about it for the last few days after i decided to give up on jfs 1.51
thanks!

The Hero build certainly looks nice, but it might take you a while to get used to the slight slowness compared to the non-Rosie builds. Still... very pretty, keeps me mesmerized while I wait for my stuff to load... j/k
I've been using aHome for 5 months, i'm used to lag. lol.
nothing prepares you for Hero lag!!! just kidding, with linux-swap or compcache, its pretty snappy, but not comparable to non-hero builds.
well i'll find out soon enough. If it ends up being really bad then i may just go to some other ROM but i'm really hoping to have hero run good. Unfortountly i just have a normal Micro SD 2GB which has no class distinction so hopefully it'll be alright. If not i may have to go get another 8GB.
When i tried to format the last 8GB to get apps2sd working one program destroyed the card. shows up as 8MB now instead of GB. lol.
use cyns rom. most fastes freshes bestes cupcake ever. even tastes better. and his recovery also.

there is a way to fix that on linux mentioned somewhere here on the forums...
it involves just writing 0's through the card

You can run linix right from cd-rom.

I too noticed alot of lagging in jf1.51 after moving all apps to sd so I took off Ahome and openhome and it runs alot better. I also need to get a class 6 sd card which will help speed things up. currious...does anyone know if there are limitations on the size of the sd card for G1? I looked on HTC's site and T-mobile's as well it just says micro sd 2.0.
didn't know that. guess i'm gonna have to grab that and try to fix my 8GB
and i thought that the G1 was capped at 8GB but i've seen people say they have 16GB cards so i guess you can go up to 16gb. which i think is the largest they make in micro sd

Like the title says, is it possible to dual boot Phoenix 2 and valkyrie firestorm 6. For example, a computer can dual boot two OS's, in which during boot-up, you can pick the OS (this case ROM) in the bios (or in this case the RUU, I don't know).
I haven't heard this in any threads/ROM threads, but I researched through google and found that you can format and partition a MicroSD Card into two FAT32 partitions (I'm not sure though), enabling two ROMs to coexist. I would not know how this would work though, because there is no 'bios' to choose eirther ROM at startup.
I'm kind of doubting dual boot options on the xperia x1, but I need some kind of clarification; it would be great to dual boot these two ROM's, but I can not find a official way how to.
I know this is a little early to ask, but if this thread gets popular, can some developer cook up something to enable this option?
No, this is not possible.
Just no? There must be a good reason why; could you go into some general explaining, like why it can't be done? No offense to any developers, but is it really that hard to make something that can enable this?
Yes, this is not possible.
I as well would like to know the reason
Oh come on, give us one good reason why it can't be done.

1)this is not a computer
2)you can't just place two different roms on a memory card and flash!
3)there just isn't enough space on the xperia!, its not a hard drive we can change!
and 4) we don't have a "dualbooting" SPL/bootloader
theres your (kind of obvious) reason(S)

oh 4) running a rom of a memory card is just stupid, it would be god awfully slow
5) no bootloader supports loading off a SD card
6) android barely runs off a SD anyway, what do u expect from windows mobile?
Good answer, that's what I wanted to hear. I hope in 10 years or so SD cards can develop with better access speed, better size, bla bla bla so this is possible.
Thanks

I mean like to the extreme though, like 50 gigs per second or something. But you are right though, the rate its evolving, I don't know what its going to be like.
Dude.. from all the reasons Jonny4911 mentioned why it can't be done, you only picked up "too slow to work from SD"? (also how would you flash to the SD in the first place and be able to boot up from the SD...) any of the other 4-5 reasons is one reason enough, it can't be done!..

That would be awesome. A lot of times theres no specs on the speed of cards out there and your not really sure of what you are buying. It would be awesome.
excellent idea for an app. there are cards out there that do not list there class and cards that are listed as class 2 yet reach class 6 speeds.
cheers,
ryan
If you guys would give me a good algorithim to test read/write speeds I can work on it later tonight. It will probably take a few days a best.
But My idea is write a 2 meg file to the SD card, time it. Read the same file from the card, time it. Do a little math...present some numbers...
Now there are a lot of issues that could come into play with that method. Maybe repeat it 3 or 4 times just to see an average, but still its not the best that it could be.
What about just getting a microsd adapter or even mounting it to the computer. And then run a program that tests read/write speeds and use it on the card. like h2testw or something :/

1. On the phone is just cooler
2. On another thread about this topic there was debate about how accurate it would be to use an adapter or mounting as a drive. Adding cable seems to me like it could increase latency and you are no longer using the phones OS to test its internal stuff. ( i know its USB its faster than the card anyways, but see #1)

You can start from there then trial and error. I was thinking you can take a look at any of the web SpeedTests in the market and learn something from there.
If you are on linux you can mount the phone and run
Code:
hdparm -tT /dev/sdd
where sdd is the phones drive(could be different on your machine)
That will give you a read speed but would would be limited by your USB read speed.
Hdparm is not built into android so you can't run it from the phone. There is one command that is built in that can measure speeds... However it is VERY VERY VERY dangerous so I hesitate to post it here but... dd
For the love of God do not mess with dd unless you read up on it and fully understand it. You could very easily measure write speed as well as read with dd but you would need an empty card because you would have to just blindly write to the blocks on the card. Doing which will at the bare minimum if you know what you are doing overwrite stuff on the card. Worst case is you mess up your partition table and have to re-partition. So I will only point you in the direction of dd and not post any code on how to use it for fear of some idiot entering the code and wiping their phone(although they would have to know how to use adb shell so they wouldn't be complete idiots)
This would be a useful app. I have a class 6 PNY SD and want to know how fast it really is.
Wow, what an AMAZING idea for an app. I would be more than happy to help and test!!!
Sooo
I am working on this guys.
I have gotten the program writing a file out to the SDcard. It just a randomly filled Byte Array being parsed to a file on the SDcard a few times, then reading it back off (Haven't got the reading part yet). I am running into some FC issues and also getting the timer to work is being a PITA. Android doesn't like my threads for some reason.
If I have time this week maybe I can get it done - or at least working, but I have some stuff going on that may slow down progress.
EDIT:
Also if anyone that is not quite so Artisticly Challenged as I am wants to get me some drawables. I can use an Icon and a 320x480 image back ground (Let's try to keep it simple , I have seen some of your boot screens. lol)
Bump for moral support!
couldn't you just pop it into an adapter, and use HD Tune on your pc? http://www.hdtune.com/
I think the concept of the app request is so people don't have to turn off theory beloved heroes and pull battery just to get to the SD card, babe.

Well, it reads and writes a 6 meg file while spinning a wait cursor LOL.
Been working on final projects the past few weeks.
Might have something out 2 week of june.
As it stands now:
1)Need to setup a time mechanism - probably most acurate to grab a time stamp before the start and after the finish. Threads tend to get time messed up.
2)After the file is written and the time is figured out. Need to display the read/write results.
3)Then need to cleanup the file and ram after everything is done.
Also, I have seen the file only become half of the size it should be (3 mb)....which I think has something to do with UTF (Chars taking up 2 bytes)....but I am not sure yet.
And on top of that...who the hell knows if its accurate LOL.
But it's been interesting and fun.
haha, well thats good. keeps you interested then. i honestly dont kknow anything about programming and what not, so i cant help you there. buuuutttt when you finish and need testers i can help. well try anyways

I am really interested to see if it's even remotly accurate.
Seems like creating a 6 meg file and writing it out from memory to the card would surely test well... But there are a crap ton of things that could come into play and effect it.
I guess we'll only know if we try.
unless my phone explodes, i see nothing wrong with trying it out.
Hello!
I'm gonna buy a new phone, but idk when. I think I'm gonna buy the LG O2X, though after reading all the problems with it, I'm not sure.
I have heard troubles like:
Shuts down and reboot randomly.
Shows wrong battery percent left.
WiFi stops to work when you turn it on after sleep.
I also heard about 2 people who had their LG out in the sun, when it was like 20-25 degrees and it started to reboot every 2 minute.
If the phone didn't have all these problems, I would definitely get it. But that's apparently not the case.
Damn, this is driving me crazy, I can't decide whether I should get it or not. Please help me.
All the things you've listed are software, the first CM7 nightly is currently building. That said I've not had mine's been mostly fine. No wifi issues, only had odd battery behavior when trying new kernels. Have had a couple of overnight reboots, but not for about 5 days.

I know that the problems I listed is problems with the SW, and can be solved. But the problem about their phone did reboots every 2 minute when they had it outside in the sun. Is the problem I most worry about, since it doesn't sounds like problems with the SW.
I'm not gonna change ROM or something. Since I don't wanna loose my warranty.
And LG doesn't seems to solve problems that quickly, correct me if I'm wrong.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=997705, I read a few pages there, so many seems to have trouble with it. So I really don't know what I should do.
Every 2 minutes? Weird lol. My o2x was right next to me while I was lying in the sun all the time during the easter holidays. No such probs here, actually none of the probs you mentioned. If you get one with constant freezing you can always get an exchange, you know

Sounds like your friends' phones could have errant processes running in the background and the extra heat from the sun could have pushed the phones into instability.
Ask them to install "Watchdog Task Manager Lite" to monitor the processes running on their phones. If they can track down which app processes are the culprits, they should try to delete or modify the app settings to quieten down their errant behaviours. This should help with the "every 2 mins in sun reboot" issue.

I read about this problem in a forum. But thanks for the "Watchdog Task Manager Lite" tip, I guess it could be handy when I get a android phone. If it will be LG O2X, we'll see.
If you are a non-hacker type person, and just want to use the phone straight out of the box, it might be prudent to avoid most, if not all, of the dual-core phones for now. I think the designers and programmers are still trying to iron out the kinks with the new dual-core phones. IMHO, a fast single-core Android phone might probably be a more fuss-free phone straight out of the box than dual-cores currently.

Well, I don't change phone that often, so I wanna have future proof phone that isn't too expensive. And I believe this is that phone.
I'm pretty sure I can root it and change rom. But... I'm too afraid I might mess it up.
In forums like these you will mostly read about the issues that some are having, because people tend to seek out these forums when they disover isues - the wast majority may not have any issues and dont post in forums like these. So regardless of which device you get, you will allways find alot of forum posts dealing with whatever bugs some users are facing. The number of issues and error posts for the LG isnt really that big, nothing out of the ordinary, and nothing you wont see just as many or more for ANY other device out there - single core or dual core.
Basically dont get scared off by these but only use it as a guide to perhaps seek for specific bugs which you would not be able to live with untill they get fixed by the manufacturer.
I have 2 LG optimus - one for myself and one for my teenager son
Both bought on the same day 6 weeks ago.
Mine has run completely stable and "errorfree" since day one - not a single random shutdown or lockup bsod - no issues with wifi, 3g or anything - has worked with every single app I tried, no batterydrain (easily get 2 days worth) etc. etc.
They are running completely stock with the only change being a different laucher (GO launcher) to solve the micro stutter in swyping between homescreens which the standard LG launcher has (just a very minor software issue).
The only issues I have left are 2 known issues - which for certain will be solved by some new LG update. One is the lag that happens while installing a new app from market - the other is the memory management which isnt completely optimised causing free memory to sometimes run a litle lower than wanted.
If you arent unlucky and get hit by the random shutdowns and bsod that some users are facing - then you do get a very nice future proof phone that isnt too expensive, and does most things pretty good allready - and will only get better as updates arrives
Imho, rooting and new roms arent really needed, allthough a nice possibility for those that like to tinker and tuning their devices as much as possible - but even without doing so, you will get a nice phone.
I'm planning to get one too so I just started to visit O2X threads. Currently on Motorola Milestone, but I'm sick of it's low RAM. Every new game is force closing. I'll wait for it to get cheaper in my country .

You're probably right. I've read alot of threads. It's so weird, some have many problems with the phone and some have not. I really don't wanna have problems with reboots and wifi.
I'm still not sure if I should get it or not. I don't really see any other future proof alternatives in the same price range. The SGS2 is too expensive.
This is definitely not easy, maybe I should wait and see if they fix all problems. But IDK which phone I should get instead.

I've seen some reviews of SGS2 and it seems laggier than O2X. First I noticed that in Shrek Kart video (I've seen SGS2, than compared to O2X), after that it seemed that SGS2's launcher is laggy too -.-' ... maybe I just watched fake/bad reviews ^^.
Well i had phone for around 2 weeks and have not had any of the reboot issues as for batt draining if u ture of back ground data then this reduces it massivly, the handset is on of the best around. As for LG not doing update to solve problems i think that is unfair they do seem to be listerning with in a few days of me gettting hand set went from 10b to 10d. I read in a review that the OS takes about 300 mb ram.

So I have about 200 mb free for my apps. That doesn't sound much, but maybe it's enough? Well, this is going to be my first smartphone, so I don't really know how much RAM app takes.

The phone works from times to times he said, is still partially functional, thus he still asks for the price of SII for it, which he wants to replace with.
My question is:
Is the emmc bug permanent? I want to buy it cause is such a awesome screen\phone and i cant afford one from retails at full price. My plan is to downgrade from ics to gb with safe kernels and hope it wont brick with odin as unsafe as it is already.
Don't buy it. He is selling a bricked device for half the price (I wouldn't pay that for a used but fully functional right now).
And you will always get problems with it in many different situations.
Its risky for me, but also rewarding. If you'd seen this particular phone, is almost brand new. He told me it wasn't used much and that is visible on the over all aspect. And god, i love amoled screens, even if pentile is infamous.
Could you describe what you mean by being bricked? -> the phone boots and installs stuffs, but from time to times has the flaw of getting stuck -> require reset.
Its on the way
ps. I trust that if i had this stuff happen to me, coming from a samsung product, i would be able to get it fixed somehow.
Congrats: you just bought a bricked device. I guess he used the repartition workaround which reduces available capacity.
He didn't do the only real fix: replace motherboard in Samsung Service Center.
If you read here more before buying you would understand my "do not buy". Now you will learn later.
And he didn't lie to you - he told everything about the condition.
If you want to learn now while waiting for it, start to read about bricked devices here, about hg42's repartition thread etc. You might need it
Well, wish me luck. I'm gonna follow the steps from around the topics here.
I just hope i can watch movies, and pictures, and browse the mail... then he can get stuck but just a little.
I got an ace on my sleeves though. I can test it before i buy it... any advices, maybe doesn't even have the bug, how i notice
that ?
I'm gonna try these steps on the clip from rootgalaxynote:
youtube - hDtTNDVcTF4
If it doesn't work, i'm screwed cause i do not have a replace phone atm.
Following those steps will only mean that you won't brick it again... and anyway that is really outdated... When you've had enough of constant freezes then you will probably want to try a slim rom such as Slim Bean 4.2.2
I just purchased a n7000 from a guy on eBay for $350.00. It has the Ultimate rom installed in the screenshots. This means that it should be fine, right? I should receive it this week sometime. I bricked my i9100 back when the brick bug first appeared so I'm kind of worried about this.

Thanks for replies. I dunno what to expect. It is worrying, but probably i'll return it back cause is not worth the money if you put it this way "unusable".
He said to me to add a new sd card,,, i guess here is where he was just too honest. This confirms that there is actually a permanent damage to the hardware, especially the hefty 16 GB of memory.
My friend has the bug and he did the workaround , The phone freezes when you turn on bluetooth or wifi , And also the internal memory is low , but good luck with your's btw "restarting it from time to time" seems suspicious though

Apparently that was a slight misleading. On itself doesn't restart. I got the phone right now. Is so huge even an elephant could use it.
Only freezes when i try write something thru usb cable. The ram is smaller, only 5 gb.

Really? Then it might be double-bricked and double "workarounded". Each time lossing about 3 GB...
When I close my eyes I see the grinning of this a--h-le who sold it for real money.
That sucks...
Now I want to see if is only a memory problem of the storage sd, or is as well as for the last 'bastion' of my phone, 2GB rom... cause then i can install slimbean like i've been adviced here.

Why? You knew from the first day about the condition and bought it nevertheless.

First off, i'm in a bit of trouble right now. As you can guess, i can do something about it, cause beyond this is the morality of getting into a mess on someone's fault. Now that has to be decided, as long as is not mine.
This guy told me it is partially usable, add a card, try fix it yourself. At 190$ i expect to be better then a S1 or nexus s which might easly outmatch this phone. If is a matter of pride. Just keep it to yourself.
Either i give this guy a bad review as is a site as amazon, where user feedback is noted, or i return it back myself. Is not the holly grail, is just a phone.
He told me is not permanent damage.
LE: I got some good news and bad new:
I cannot add videos, it simply doesn't write. It doesn't freeze my phone anymore, this time i'm using samsung kies. Good news, i can write photos and songs.
I'm half way there in trusting this guy that with a sd card, the phone will work just okay in installing stuff.
On the other hand, i dunno if the internal storage is damaged; can i install jelly bean? or change the culprit kernel? or should i live with it as it is.
the seller has a no return policy. so ur actually screwed. you think the seller is a noob and that he didnt know about the fix. sometimes being too wise makes u feel and idiot in the end.

And now you are starting to get arrogant?
Even if I do not always follow qazis messages I do understand him very well - because Oxford english isn't a prerequisite here.
Members here can't help you: Why? Because you bought a brick device even when warned about it.

How was his random ranting relevant to this topic?
So what do you think... flashing a new kernel and formating the sdcard do any good?
I may have a different term for bricking: When used in reference to consumer electronics, a "brick" describes an electronic device such as a smart phone, game console, router, or tablet computer that owing to a serious misconfiguration, corrupted firmware or a hardware problem, can no longer function. The term derives from the vaguely cuboid shape of many electronic devices (and their detachable power supplies) and the suggestion that the device can only function as a large, heavy object.
As far as i see, this device has stuff installed on it, and i can't figure how he did it.
recommend me a memory error checking app if u know, please!
Flash a safe kernel and flash a new ROM.. Try that and if all works good we´ll continue..
