Ok.. I went into tmobile today and they got a shipment of these Fender branded Mytouch 3's with the 3.mm jack and a 16gb sd card. I also was looking at the Moto Cliq, but I dont see to much of a difference between it and my rooted G1.
I also found out I have a $300 upgrade credit waiting.
No im not a super social network guy, I use facebook and thats it. The gimmick with the cliq seems to be all about social networking..
Now the fender mytouch is just beautiful, the case it comes in, the headphones and charger are all themed and the 2.0/2.1 eclair will be released for it he said between Feb 7-21.
My question is.. I like my keyboard and the mytouch doesnt have one, the cliq does but also has a lot of pointless stuff.
Should I--
1. Keep My perfectly working G1 and let my upgrade credit collect
2. Run back right now and get a white Cliq
3. Wait till Jan 22nd to go and pick up the Fender Mytouch.
I am a music fan and guitar player so the fender really will only be for the looks.
Any help would be appreciated because Im just not sure. They all seem to do the same things.
If I were you, and you were trying to choose between the two, I'd pick the Fender MT3G over the Cliq.
Although, you could get the Nexus One.

See thats my problem. I want the nexus 1, but they do not sell them in tmobile stores and my upgrade credit doesnt count towards it. Also, since I have not had my account for that long, I have to pay full cash price of $529... which is 2 car payments and insurance lol.
But your right.. Out of the 2, even thought he mytouch doesnt have a keyboard, the cliq is basiclly the same as the G1... just with moto blur crap.
Ill wait it out I guess.
Oh my God, the Fender Mytouch is out? I'm getting one of those!
The fender no doubt
I'd say let that credit build. It won't be long before something comes along you can't resist.
I would wait for the hd2 or some of the other new devices hitting tmobile like the x10
two words: 92 megabytes.
The MyTouch is a pain in the butt to use with all thé lag
Well.. Got my Fender Mytouch today. 1 of 3 in the tmobile store. Im happy with it. Even my daughters mo who hates techy stuff wants one just because the way it looks. Preinstalled music is garbage, But the apps that comes with it like the full instrument set, drum machine.. guitar and pitch tuner.. And its only $20 more then reg mytouch with 16gb card. Now on to the rooting

When you finish root can yo umake a nandroid or bart then upload the apk's from the backup?(Please) I heard it had 2.1 or 2.0 on it.
After seeing the Clapton commercial, I'd definitely want to get me a Fender myTouch. I love that song, as well as ol' Slowhand himself. Not just 'cause of Clapton, of course, but because it looks freakin awesome, and I love Android.
I am, however, gonna stick with my G1 for now. lol

Ive seen a ton of threads everywhere and it seems most users and devs are making the move to the almighty EVO. So who plans to stick it out with the hero for awhile? Im more concerned with devs of course.
Just got the hero as a birthday gift in January. I'll be keeping it for at least another year. It's still great, even if the EVO comes out. I do hope some devs stay..
I'm hoping to learn all the stuff involved with Android. It would be kind of a step backwards for me to move to a new phone. Besides I've only had my Hero for a few months anyways.
this would make a great poll........
I had the hero since January, I'll be keeping it for another year as well. My dad will be getting the evo when it comes out.

Another who just barely got it in January. I paid the out-of-contract fee for the phone, so I have absolutely no intention of upgrading any time soon. The Hero is still a fantastic phone.
I only got mine a few months ago when Verizon (who I had been with for 8 years) would not get me into an Android device for less than $300. I wish I could have waited, but I could not be without Android any longer. As such, I'll be on this handset for a while and even when I move on I can see it being a great little test device.
I use Linux daily and from what I've seen of the ROM breakdowns, the way it's packaged, filesystem layout, etc - I'm definitely going to be tinkering quite a bit. This is a capable handset that has brought me much happiness already. Can't wait to really start cooking.
I thimk I got mine in june. Payed like $500 for it coming from an instint I dropped in a lake
...but im just now unlocking, r I should say the devs here have tripled what I thought this phone was about. Although ill b sad the day I say goodbye to my hero..ill get over it with my Evo! like girlfriends, u always miss them the hour it takes to have a new one..

The Hero took my virginity. I would never leave it. Like ever.
Thinking of sticking to the hero because I'd like to see more markus posts. I mean, he seems to be a smart spender. Yeah, the evo sucks because he wears footie pajama pants.
I just got mine a couple months ago, so I'll be sticking with it at least until I get another upgrade from Sprint. Can't afford the retail price on smartphones right now.
We got ours in Feb, 2 for $99 and we love love them. mine is rooted, wifes is not, although she did just get the official update to 2.1. So we'll be sticking with these until at least upgrade time...probably longer...
It all depends on a few things. #1 being how fast the EVO gets root, #2 being how good the OC roms turn out for the hero with the new eris kernel. If the hero gets OC'd enough, ill hold out and see how the EVO plays out.
I am sticking with the Hero for a while, contract etc...Plus $10/month extra WTH!??
Also the Evo's form factor seems too large, I loved my Vogue and was hesitant to get the Hero. I keep my phone in my pocket so getting a phone that needs a kick stand is a bit too much for me.
I will ditch the Hero when HTC has a smaller Android model that's same or smaller sized than the Hero.
Damn i should of made this a poll, how can i add one?
I'm sticking with it... can't afford an evo or the extra money each moth for 4g
Sticking with it til at least dec..no upgrade in site.. so i can see paying 450 retail..when my hero does everything i need.. plus i like to take the sit back and wait approach..that way i can watch all the new evo owners complain bout bugs and such..
i dont want to pay for an evo. so im going to stick with my hero and also get a moment to switch every now and then

I think the majority will keep there hero. Out of the thousands of users in this subforum only a couple hundred may actually fork over the money. I will probably keep mine for a year or more as there will be an even better phone around Christmas.

Won't bother with upgrading to the evo. Especially when they are already announcing Tegra2 for end of 2010 releases. It will just never end with android as soon as one super phone is announced they already have another in development waiting to destroy it lol
A friend was looking for a new phone. She was looking to switch to Sprint and I looked through their selection and decided on the Samsung Intercept for her. She wanted something easy and functional with a very short learning curve. She got the phone today and I was playing with it and it really seems like a piece of crap. The screen is horrible (I have an EVO so it may also be the fact that I'm comparing it to that), the phone feels cheap and the buttons are very unresponsive.
She has 30 days to return the phone so I was really just looking to get a general idea, from some Hero users, if the hero is a good buy at $150. I don't know a lot about it's capabilities, I believe that I just read that it was recently updated to 2.1. I was looking around and there seems to be a good root method and some quality roms available including CM6 so I know I can expand it's functionality. I'd appreciate just some general comments on the phone and any issues anyone has had with it, thanks.
Does she like physical keyboards? Then the epic might be worth checking out?
If not, I'm satisfied with my hero, its just a little underpowered but with cm6 and oc its very usable.

I was thinking that it was a bit underpowered. It's been out for a bit as well which is why I suggested the newer Intercept. The physical keyboard thing was my suggestion to make texting easier. I don't have an issue with typing on my screen with my EVO but that's because the screen is huge. I thought about the Epic but I really think it's way too much phone for her. She has 30 days from yesterday and the Epic is supposed to be released on the 20th so I may suggest that if she's unhappy with this one.
I just bought this Hero used after returning my Evo. $125 in near prefect condition. I'm very happy with it. I used to swear by physical keyboards until I got used to Swype, now its all I use. So many custom roms and things to chose from to do to my phone.
You're milage may vary.

I like the Hero as it's what I bought (when they were new) but I think I'd have stuck with the Evo. Am I missing something?

I actually love my Hero right now, but would LOVE to own an EVO right now
But, I was pretty amazed to see that the Hero CDMA used to be just $49.99 or something from Sprint, and NOW, it's $149.99! Crazy huh?!? Couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that crap. Now that they probably got rid of they're massive stock pile they had when it first came out, ppl are probably still wanting to get it. Especially since the EVO is sold out every-freakin'-where.
If she is a new customer Radio Shack has them for 69.99, but it was 49.99 at my local store.
Crazy thing is they want $529 for the Hero unactivated and only $499 for the Evo unactivated
Radio Shack HTC HERO
Radio Shack HTC EVO
I wouldn't mind getting an Evo, but in a couple more months we should have either 2Ghz processors and/or dual-core processors which will blow away the Evo. Once Camera preview and GPS is completely working in CM6 the Hero will be 10X better than it was. I am happy with my Hero.

That RS link doesn't work but that's the same she paid for the Intercept at RS. If that's true I might definitely tell her to switch to the Hero. She was looking for advice on a new phone and she said simple, but me being me, I couldn't bring myself to recommend any of Sprints lower end phones. Consequently I've become the buffer, easing her into learning how to use Android (Not really all that difficult but she couldn't figure out how to use Google, lol) Thanks for the heads up, I'll look into it.
On another note: I have an EVO. I was really looking forward to it's release and I can honestly say that it's exceeded all my expectations. My last phone was a Touch Diamond so this was a major upgrade. I've always liked the Hero, thanks for the responses.
I had an intercept.. found that the touch buttons at the bottom of the screen didn't work consistently...
The Hero seems to work pretty well thus far...
i like everything but
call delay
com.htc.bg force closes
on 2.1 official, rooted
other than that, great
i loved my hero and had cm6, it was perfect. Then i got my EVO it makes my hero feel like it belongs in the 90s.

when i switched from my g1 to hero, my hands desperately craved the feeling of a keyboard. over time i got used to soft keyboard especially after swype. I don't think a hardware kb is necessary unless you plan on running EMU's.
i think the HERO is amazing. compared to all the other phones i have owned this blows them all out the water. One amazing thing i like about it is the 5mp camera. there is no negative side to this phone for me.

I have fat thumbs and I have no issues at all with the evo's keyboard. I thought I might be better off with a hardware keyboard and was disappointed theat the evo didn't have one. Since I got it though, I've had no problems with it and I've had it since launch day. The screen is so big that it's much easier to use than most phones physical keyboard.
So I recently purchased a Captivate, what got me to buy it was how it DID NOT look like an Iphone. The vibrant just looks like an Iphone(although I've been eying it for a while since I live in Canada and Bell offered the one with the front facing camera, is it really that useful?).
I'm just curious on what got you guys to choose the Captivate.
Cause the AT&T nexus one is hard to find for under 500 bucks lol
But honestly the 4 inch screen and cause its the only android handset with a bright future on at&t and i hate iphones with a passion

always nice to hear from people like me who hate 'iphone with passion' good one !!1!! I just pity on the idiots who praise iphone in front of me after seeing my captivate
I could have gone with either T-Mob or AT&T the deciding factor for me was the Amazon deal on the Cappy for a penny. 1 Penny VS 100 dollars. was easy decision.
FAN + high end android phone
Also, it looks the best (the carbon fiber back matches my bike ).
I have to agree with both statements of both the iphone look of the vibrant and the absolute disgust of the iphone itself. I've already converted some ppl to android and completely shamed some iphone 4 owners with the amazing captivate. And when ppl see my phone they know its not an idumb unlike my friend who owns a vibrant. She has the hardest time having vibrant in plain site and ppl asking if its the new iphone.

I upgraded to this from a Samsung Impression. I loved my Impression. I never had any issues with it like others had described. It had the same AMOLED screen technology, and amazing battery life. Any Samsung I've owned, whether it's been a phone or a camera has been great. So they've earned my business. They didn't disappoint me this time either with my Captivate. It's fast, it's light, it does great on battery life (I can go a day and a half without a full charge unlike I could with my Samsung Blackjack) and the screen is bright and vibrant just like I expected.
impression had a amoled screen? didn't know that but anyways well the 16 GB internal storage is one reason the other is that i couldn't switch to T-Mo
im not leaving AT&T, i had an upgrade available and its the first high end android device they offered. plus i was getting tired of how blackberry was so behind with everything.

Ya learn something new everyday.
i was tired of my bb's outdated operation.. was considering an iphone.. but this phone came HIGHLY reccomended from an executive at ATT that i know well... and referred to this phone as the "iphone killer"... love it so far.
My friend had the Vibrant on T-mo and told me, "Yknow, AT&T is getting basically the same phone, it's called the Captivate." My contract came up for renewal and they offered me the phone for $99. I couldn't say no. I like the idea of a phone running an open source operating system that anyone can tinker with. I've never liked Apple and their iOS with all of their restrictions.
I was actually contemplating making the move to T-mobile as they have cheaper plans and the service is about the same as AT&T in my area. Still, after holding both phones, the build quality and the overall look of the phone was much better with the Captivate IMO, so I decided to stick with AT&T for now and picked one up.
I am now waiting on the G2 and whatever the Emerald turns out to be for T-mobile this fall and may make the jump at that point.
I'm actually not enthralled with the overall look of the Captivate, but that's probably because I came from the Pure, and could see how AT&T has been influencing the design of these phones, and not necessarily for the better. I've attached a picture that shows what I mean better. If I removed the branding, you might have a hard time telling which phone is which.
But I did buy a Captivate, but only because I got ~$300 off from AT&T, T-mobile gets horrible reception both where I live and work, and I knew before I bought it that I would be able to undo the vast majority of AT&T's raping of this otherwise amazing phone.
had my Cappy out charging in Starbucks the other day and overheard the two people next to us chatting about it to each other:
"hey, what phone is that over there?"
"looks like the Xperia X10"
had to laugh at myself and told em its a Captivate and its not released here in Canada yet
To all who were tired of the bb.
I just came from a Bold 9000. Blackberry isn't really much outdated it's just really more lenient on business.
Tbh, I miss some things on my bb like keyboard shortcuts, the keyboard in general lol, bbm(reasons not sure why), and the ease of jumping around for me.
The reason why I jumped ship to the captivate is because it's the best android phone for AT&T and that's where I have a family plan :T lol I would have taken Sprint Epic if I could but I'm on AT&T!
^ I find bbm silly. Anyone who has a blackberry says they love it and I ask them why, the answer is always bbm. I say why is that better than text? They always try to come up with a reason. some of them know bbm transfers files. I say I have google talk and a vast array of other Im apps. They always say but bbm is blackberry only as if that's a good thing. I can talk to any one with a computer or iphone or android or whatever on there existing aim our yahoo account and they can only talk to there friends with blackberries, seems snobbish to me. You might say google talk can't send files, but yahoo messenger can.

As the title says, I have been thinking about trading my MT3G 32B for a T-Mobile G1. I figure that the G1 is probably a better phone for me, since I do a ton of texting, and don't have a bunch of apps installed (only about 25).
What are your opinions? Do you think it would be a good idea to switch from a MyTouch to a G1?
Thanks!
Why wouldn't you switch to a newer generation android device, rather than the first android device? I mean, the g1 is still a great device, I loved it, but newer phones are significantly faster and can run more apps more efficiently.

Yeah, I know. But I'm waiting for my upgrade, which is in September. And I figured that I could probably just trade my MT3G for a used G1, and barely have to pay anything, because they're practically the same phone.
And I don't really have a whole lot of money, since I'm just 17 and don't have a job. Haha.

the g1 is only mildly harder to work with rootwise than the MT3G 32B because of spl's and such, but besides that, if you dont need lots of apps theres not really a downside.

I don't think SPLs and stuff would be a problem, since I've already flashed those on my MT3G. Also, I just rooted my brothers G2, and I know that is harder to root than a G1.
Also, would there be any noticeable speed difference between the MT3G and the G1? Or is the only difference having less storage space for apps?

Well, for whatever reason, the g1 does not clock as high stably, so that's a minor downside, but other than that they are the exact same chipset and board. So there's prettymuch no difference except for the keyboard. As long as trading it wouldn't affect your ability to get an upgrade in september there isn't really a downside. However, if trading for the g1 would eliminate your ability to upgrade in september I would just stick with the mytouch for 10 months and deal with it till you can get a newer gen phone.

If you aren't trading/buying the g1 from tmobile, like if you get it off of craigslist or something, then it wouldn't affect your upgrade capability, but if you get it from tmobile it will. My friend just gave me a mytouch slide a few weeks ago, but I can still upgrade in september since I didn't get the phone from tmobile

Yeah, I wasn't planning on getting it from T-Mobile anyway. I was thinking about just buying a G1 on eBay, and then maybe selling my MT3G. There are some G1's on there that are in pretty good condition, and are only about $50.
Hey all,
I'm wanting to get another Android phone as I got rid of my HTC Wildfire. I'm thinking about getting the G1 as its cheap and seems as though it can perform well.
I'm looking at buying one that is locked to T-Mobile and has the newest carrier updates on. My question is can it be unlocked? and does Cyanogen mod perform well?
Thanks!
It would be worth having one now, but getting one from fresh... that would depend on how cheap you can get one and if you think you need a hard-QWERTY. The G1 is quite old... and you may be more content with adding more funds for a G2.
I recently bought a G1 for cheap, and it is great currently have it running gingerbread which works really quite well, a lot more so then i thought cyanogenmon 6 did.
I also believe that they can be unlocked quite easily as well
Thanks for the info
I'm looking at a G1 also, coming from a CDMA Moment with 2.2.2 and looking to switch to GSM. The Moment has a faster processor(?) but is not a very good at some things, like being a phone. Is the G1 a good PHONE? I can get a good ROM for the things I want but does the phone part work well?
G1 okay phone, easy to mod. if you like tinkering.
G1 is an okay phone. My partner at work uses a Blackberry, he can't hear the person at the other end without an ear piece, I don't have that issue on my G1.
I do NOT love my G1, it's bulky/heavy and I don't feel the build quality is as good as some of the other phones. The Speaker is on the back of the phone, opposite from the display - seriously who does that? Samsung for example always puts the speaker above the main screen.
The Keyboard has very small keys but it IS a 5 row keyboard, you can get good with some practice, but some of the newer phones, ex: T-Mobile Sidekick 4G has a keyboard/CPU/display that I almost can't believe how good it is, however they have the dumbest overlay I've ever seen, haha, can't have it all I guess.
The G1 is reliable, it's just not very pretty, if it's cheap, it's a deal.
Hi,
I am contemplating putting my G1 up for sale.
It is the one in my Signature.
Lemme know.
Heeter
If you don't play big games, g1 is enough, however, you cannot buy a new one now.
If I were you, I will buy another new phone.
I suggest a HTC Wildfire at least :/ g1 is maybe just too slow even for normal use if your gonna even get apps :'(
Honestly, no. Get a higher end device and you will be much happier.. I just got a HD2 and it is a huge improvement over the G1, and very worth investing in.
The G1 can't run many of the apps on market because it is too slow, including live wallpapers, angry birds rio, etc..
It depends on how much you can get if for. I got mine for US$50 used a few weeks a go. It's really slow and low on capacity but it's a great entry phone to Android for me. Learned a lot with it. It works great as a phone. And the best part is, if I brick it, I will not feel bad. Just pull the SIM and move to the next cheap phone I can find.
Just saw someone selling one for $30 on craigslist. I would definitely get that one if I haven't got this one.
I completely agree with the above statement ^^
I would love to get an G1 for a nice 2nd/back up phone since my bb 8900 curve have self rebooting problems
