I was wondering what Messaging app you guys use, Chomp SMS, Handcent SMS, the regular default Messaging, or an other. I'm interested in your feedback in what one you all use and what you think of the others.
i wish there was a hero messaging port, i really like how that looks, most of the time i just use the default one though
Ive Both, and they got very erritating to me in different ways after a period of time..
Chomp - When I used it, slowed down my phone unbelievably. After close to wanting to exterminate my phone, I uninstalled it.
Handcent - I used this lately, I liked the features, it was slow for a while, but some updates, and it sped up quite a bit. I liked the "Pop-up" feature, because it was less of a hassle to reach my messages, but it quickly became an annusiance because it would light up my screen when I would have it out in public and I would have random strangers looking at my personal buisness on my screen..
Lets just say I uninstalled it very quickly after a few experiences like that.
-So I just use The Default Messaging service now. lol
Thats just some insight on my experience on other applications. ;]
Default (well, default from cyanogen rom) with SMS popup.

You can change the settings in the menu so that
a) It doesnt light up your screen, or
b) It doesn't show the contents of your message in the pop up, or both of the above
or c) It doesn't pop up at all
It's very customizable
sms popup ftw
I WAS using ChompSMS until last night, switched over to Handcent SMS to give it a try. Never looked back.
I love it beacuse of the timestamp option that ChompSMS doesn't have.

Same here lol
Where's the option for "None of the above because SMS is an overpriced and underfeatured relic of the nineties"?
/\ /\ = weirdo.
Handcent.
Used Chomp for 2 months. Individual text tones for contacts was great.
Once Handcent updated with this never looked back.
Chomps create "new message" is bigger and easier to use. But Handcent custimozation is superb.
Handcent all the way. There is no reason to use any other app (besides default, if its just your preference). Handcent has EVERY feature a SMS app could ask for, at least for any app on the market, no point in Chomp SMS.
Personally I really don't have any speed problems with Handcent, but for real...every setting you could want, handcent has, plus its constantly updated and new features are added.
I used to use Chomp, but I am tired of apps that look like iPhone apps (Handcent included).
Now I use the default app and SMS PopUp on Droid. What I really want is something that looks like the default app, splits messages over 160chars, has a time stamp and has the ability to send texts to groups.
That would be perfect.

i think that might fall into the "other" category.
for me it depends. i had used handcent since i got my phone, but then at one point it started having problems with recieving messages but not keeping them(and somehow they didnt stay in the default messaging app either!). so i was losing messages, unacceptable. i went back to default. default(on cm of course) truely is the best of all of them, its just very plain and the least flashy and minimal functionality. but otherwise still always has been the most reliable. so i got stuff like sms pop up for a while and other options. but i saw handcent got updates so a couple weeks later i came back to it and i love it again
i tried chomp. i do not see why anybody would ever choose chomp over handcent. maybe possibly over the default, but better than handcent? ridiculous!
i'd like to know some of the settings or maybe screenshots you guys have of your handcents since its so customizable

and handcent does every single one of those options....
to me, it seemed like handcent was too cluttered. yes, there were an amazing amount of features, but it took so long for me to actually get something i liked that it wasn't worth doing it every time i flashed a new rom. chomp is for me

i have been considering trying handcent again. it's been a while since i last used it. i think i might give it another shot again soon. as long as i get those texts out, i don't really care what client i use.

Well, except it looks like a converted iPhone app.

How so? You can make it look just like the default Android:
Menu > Settings > Conversation Style > Android
I think he means the style of the general interface...I choose Chomp over Handcent because it feels less cluttered (especially the popup).
If the default app had a BIT more flair to it I'd be all for it...also I don't know why android doesn't have a mass sms feature even yet...that's just ridiculous.
Can we delete the included htc messaging app and push the stock android apk?
yes yesyesyesyesyes
that sounds fantastic! good news.
do you know where I can get it?
thank you thank you
edit: I'm referencing sms messages.
trying searching "android keyboard"...
well I don't want the android keyboard, I want to remove the sms messages client, not the IM. to be clear.
ill search around where can I find the vanilla sms app? thank you thank you

I knew what you meant lol sorry about the short "yes" this morning.
here's the AOSP mms.apk
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=313571&d=1271870744
delete the one on your phone first.
nice. thanks. gonna use this for a bit and see how i feel about it.
thank you
id like a vanilla 2.1 for this thing. waiting on an official port of 2.2 hopefully from a similar device with sense. or an official(as close as possible)to vanilla 2.2
often times when I attach a picture, I get an fc. is there a fix for this, the fc's?
I thought I started a thread on this before, but I cannot find it...
I liked the FB integration that the stock Espresso contacts app did. However, the links it makes to the FB accounts adds a Notes field with the FB data in the contact. So now on the custom ROM's contacts app, it does not have the same integration, and I can see the Notes filed with a FB tag. Is there a way to install the contacts app from the stock Espresso build that has this integration? Again, I thought I had seen it before somewhere, but cannot find it.
Short answer: No. It requires the Espresso framework I believe.
Alternatives: You can download T-Mobile's SocialBuzz, but I don't like having a spare application just to sync contacts. The Facebook app will sync with your contacts and you're able to link them.
While I missed the stock app at first, it's really not a big deal since the FB and Twitter apps basically provide the same functionality.
Well, I should have mentioned that I did have this before, I just cannot find the thread, so not sure the simple answer is No, but is understandable.
Never mind, that doesn't seem to work on TeamFenix.
Have you found out how to do this? I don't see why it would be dependent on the framework..
Sent from my myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App
Maybe not. I don't know a lot about such things.
But wouldn't the contacts app be pretty well integrated with the dialer and FriendStream or whatever that are dependent on Sense? Even if we had the app, it would be missing some functionality wouldn't it?
You just have to try
Ill see if I can get it going..
Nope its not going to work.. I think its because the phone.apk from stock espresso is 2.1 version and froyo needs the 2.2
I guess we can try when we get official froyo
Yeah, when I posted that it didn't work with the TeamFenix ROM, I assumed it was because of 2.2.
Not sure if this is exactly what you're talking about, but..
I downloaded the fb app from the Market and when I set it up it asked if I wanted to sync contacts and then added my fb account under Accounts and Sync. Now when I go into contacts everyone on my fb list is there, with all of their available info..
If i misunderstood, then please disregard! =]
Not saying its impossible, but if it is doable, its not gonna be very easy. I've seen hundreds of posts asking about porting various sense apps to basic android since the day sense ui was leaked. With the mass of java skills floating around in this community, I would guess that if it was realistic, it would have happened already.
hey i am using virtuous and love the message display on the lockscreen... im wondering tho is there any possible way i can use Gosms or chomp and have the same notification?....
i hate the sms app built into sense... so laggy personally ... if anyone knows if its possible... let me know
You could try using WidgetLocker LockScreen and put GoSMS 's Widgets where you want them.
I'm not sure why HTC's messaging app is lagging on your phone though. Its never really happened to me, not have I heard of any such incident. Granted though that Sense can be brought to lag relatively easily.
