What SMS app do you use. - G1 Apps and Games

I was wondering what Messaging app you guys use, Chomp SMS, Handcent SMS, the regular default Messaging, or an other. I'm interested in your feedback in what one you all use and what you think of the others.

i wish there was a hero messaging port, i really like how that looks, most of the time i just use the default one though

Ive Both, and they got very erritating to me in different ways after a period of time..
Chomp - When I used it, slowed down my phone unbelievably. After close to wanting to exterminate my phone, I uninstalled it.
Handcent - I used this lately, I liked the features, it was slow for a while, but some updates, and it sped up quite a bit. I liked the "Pop-up" feature, because it was less of a hassle to reach my messages, but it quickly became an annusiance because it would light up my screen when I would have it out in public and I would have random strangers looking at my personal buisness on my screen..
Lets just say I uninstalled it very quickly after a few experiences like that.
-So I just use The Default Messaging service now. lol
Thats just some insight on my experience on other applications. ;]

Default (well, default from cyanogen rom) with SMS popup.

You can change the settings in the menu so that
a) It doesnt light up your screen, or
b) It doesn't show the contents of your message in the pop up, or both of the above
or c) It doesn't pop up at all
It's very customizable

sms popup ftw

I WAS using ChompSMS until last night, switched over to Handcent SMS to give it a try. Never looked back.
I love it beacuse of the timestamp option that ChompSMS doesn't have.

Where's the option for "None of the above because SMS is an overpriced and underfeatured relic of the nineties"?

/\ /\ = weirdo.
Handcent.
Used Chomp for 2 months. Individual text tones for contacts was great.
Once Handcent updated with this never looked back.
Chomps create "new message" is bigger and easier to use. But Handcent custimozation is superb.

Handcent all the way. There is no reason to use any other app (besides default, if its just your preference). Handcent has EVERY feature a SMS app could ask for, at least for any app on the market, no point in Chomp SMS.
Personally I really don't have any speed problems with Handcent, but for real...every setting you could want, handcent has, plus its constantly updated and new features are added.

I used to use Chomp, but I am tired of apps that look like iPhone apps (Handcent included).
Now I use the default app and SMS PopUp on Droid. What I really want is something that looks like the default app, splits messages over 160chars, has a time stamp and has the ability to send texts to groups.
That would be perfect.

i think that might fall into the "other" category.
for me it depends. i had used handcent since i got my phone, but then at one point it started having problems with recieving messages but not keeping them(and somehow they didnt stay in the default messaging app either!). so i was losing messages, unacceptable. i went back to default. default(on cm of course) truely is the best of all of them, its just very plain and the least flashy and minimal functionality. but otherwise still always has been the most reliable. so i got stuff like sms pop up for a while and other options. but i saw handcent got updates so a couple weeks later i came back to it and i love it again
i tried chomp. i do not see why anybody would ever choose chomp over handcent. maybe possibly over the default, but better than handcent? ridiculous!
i'd like to know some of the settings or maybe screenshots you guys have of your handcents since its so customizable

to me, it seemed like handcent was too cluttered. yes, there were an amazing amount of features, but it took so long for me to actually get something i liked that it wasn't worth doing it every time i flashed a new rom. chomp is for me

How so? You can make it look just like the default Android:
Menu > Settings > Conversation Style > Android

I think he means the style of the general interface...I choose Chomp over Handcent because it feels less cluttered (especially the popup).
If the default app had a BIT more flair to it I'd be all for it...also I don't know why android doesn't have a mass sms feature even yet...that's just ridiculous.

Close apps and pictures question

Hey guys, just wanted to say thanks for all the helpful information on here. I just received my G1 2 days ago and I'm loving it so far (had a wing), but there are 2 things that REALLY urk me about the G1.
1) Battery life
2) If I go to the pictures app (the stock one), it opens up every single one of my pictures on my phone
Now, regarding those 2 things, I've got a couple of questions. I did some research and am currently running the "close everything" app and wanted to get your thoughts on it. It seems to close things, but I can't really tell. Not being able to close apps has KILLED my battery life.
The other thing I wanted to know is, is there some kinda app that I can run that will open up the picture viewer in folder form? I have OI File Manager, and I know I can look at pics like that, but it's only one by one. Anybody have any clue?
Oh and one more thing, I'm running the "chomp" sms app, but I hate getting two sets of messages (one for chomp and one for the stock sms). Is there a way to stop getting both notifications? Can I delete the stock sms?
Thanks in advance for any and all help.

1) The Close Everything app does not really "close" everything, so to speak. It does "kill" some processes, but since actually killing requires root, it does not do it completely. However (I do have it as well), what happens is, it kills necessary tasks that are running and will display what it had closed. From there, if Android needed something running, it'll display that.
2) If you want to view the pictures, you can download Android Gallery. It'll display the pictures side-by-side on the bottom, and large on the top (if that made any sense). As for viewing in folder form, OI is a good file manager. Personally, I have "Linda File Manager." With Linda, you can view all the running tasks, uninstall applications, and take a look at your phone and SD card's content.
3) To disable the stock SMS.. Go to Messaging > Menu > Settings and disable the notifications and [something along the lines of] disable auto retrieve. That should fix the problem for you so you have chompSMS running ONLY.
Hope it helped.

I think my phone is bugged, any help?

Yes this is the development thread, and all I really have is a problem, but I think it's something only solvable by you devs.
My phones sms has been completely Effing up lately.
I will get the notification up in the bar, and I can pull that down and read into the message, but if I open Handcent or the default app the text won't show up and will not be there.
So reasonably I stopped using Handcent, and Message widget and all sorts or things like that, wiped my phone, cleared the partition, flashed a new rom. Different firmwares [1.6 and the new open eclair]
But nothing really seems to help or work, apparenlty mms has been failing a lot which I know is more so on Tmobile's end then it is my phone but idk whats up, tonight I get this new Android notification
"com.android.mms a large number of sms messages are being send. select "ok" to continue of "cancel" to stop sending"
whenever I hit send, I haven't yet rebooted to see if it persists but it's a pain.
Is there any device log or collection I can submit so someone can look into it, possibly a bug? Virus? Somethin' stupid like that?
Thanks.
p.s. and my inbox isn't full or anything ridiculous like 1000+ messages, I've got about less than 50 currently, and when I said stopped using Handcent and MessageWidget, I mean uninstalled.
This happened to me on rare occasions while I was using Handcent. But it doesn't happen when I use the default messaging app. So I assumed it was due to handcent. Not quite sure why you're getting the other problems though... =/
This happened to me as well when I changed to a 2.1 rom. I chose to go back to Dwangs 1.6 rom until the 2.1 roms have been completely stable.
Hey try using ChompSMS. I think its better than Handcent SMS

That doesn't sound good at all.
Have you checked with t-mobile to see if you are sending a stupid amount of text messages? It could be someone is sending spam messages via your phone or something. It could explain why you are unable to receive messages.
I think you are from the government, trying to find out whom on here knows how to subvert there android espionage. I for one will state to you officer, that I know nothing about this, and am stupid to the whole concept of bugs.
PS Do not try to trace my post, as both me and my computer are wearing tinfoil hats (with the shiny side out).
In all reality, one trick I learned as a teenager to check if your phone may be bugged, is to find an old business that still uses a switchboard phone system (this was hard in the early 90's, and may be impossible now) and phone them. If your phone was bugged, then they would see two lines coming in as one and become quite confused.
Whoa guys, by "bugged" I meant viruses not I'm being spied on haha.
It's occured on the 2.1 build Open Eclair
and a Cyan 1.6 build.
With and without using alternative applications for messaging.
I got sick and tired of it so I decided to go back to my most solid rom I've ever used.
A Soul Life 1.5 build, and I haven't had any troubles yet.
When I preformed the nandroid backup however it still tried to act like my sd card was partitioned and the market was buggy for a few but the cache is cleared up and it's all good now.

Best keyboard App? Handcent vs Chomp?

Ok I've downloaded apps and bought better keyboard like a retard...my phone isn't rooted and I don't play on rooting it..I just want a keyboard thats as close to the iphones as possible cause the regular android keyboard ain't up to my spec...Or something like swype I'm just looking to hear reviews on keyboards people have tried and stuck to...also have a question about handcent and Chomp which is really better?

Download one, try it for a few hours or days. Download the other, rinse and repeat as needed.
There is no 'really better' or best one - of anything!
There is only better for you, or better for me.
Personally, I send/receive 2,500-3,000+ texts per month.
I have tried both Handcent and Chomp. They both have cool features, but neither was good enough for me to keep installed for more than a day or two.
I received my N1 on Jan.08, and promptly rooted it by the 14th.
I bought BetterKeyboard last year for my G1, but the novelty of COLORS MAN on my keyboard quickly faded.
I used the HTC_IME on my N1 as soon as it was available, and now I'm rockin' the Swype Beta right now AND LOVING IT!
Best Keyboard right here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=624416
Its free and doesnt need root. Just install the HIRES version through a file manager such as astro or Linda File Manager and enable it through settings. I love this keyboard, especially after all the modifications the developer made.
hmmm, just installed. don't see a difference. rebooting now, maybe that's the deal
edit: no. long press only offers android keyboard still as only option. :/
I am a little confused. You’re asking which is the best keyboard, then you list SMS applications as the alternatives to choose from?
Keyboards:
Personally I am loving Swype, really cool! Not so good for typing out non dictionary words, but it does the job. If you don’t like the concept of Swype, HTC_IME is by far the best. Really nice looking and very easy to use!
Sms Applications:
I personally prefer Handcent SMS over both stock and chompSMS. It just has a nicer look and feel to me, and a few more customisation options. And i love the quick reply! (I only look at the threaded view when i need to look on past conversations)
EDIT:

You have to first go into Settings->Language And Keyboard. Then enable the keyboard that you installed.
They all have the same name as the application (Better keyboard, Swype, etc) EXCEPT HTC_IME, where it will be under Touch Input.
After you have enabled it, long press on '123?' then you can choose between the currently installed AND enabled keyboards.
Hope that helped

Smaller textsize in the messaging "app"

Is there some way for me to reduce the text size that that app used. Because I find that even a normally sized text takes up a lot of space on my screen. Initially i hated the SMS threaded view and preferring the more classic way to deal with texts.
But the HTC Desire managed to make it acceptable, and now im back to starting to being annoyed by it since I have to scroll to actually see the last text or the one before that >_<. So....
Is there anyway to fix this and remain native, or would i be forced to go for another messaging client?
I would go for another client like GO SMS, ChompeSMS or Handcent. GO works great here and don't has those big letters!
Well while I may be forced to change to another client, I can live with that.
BUT if possible I actually prefer to fix my "issues" natively before going for another app. Not becuase I lack app space, but more because thats how I am.
use Go sms instead - besides the ability to set fontsize individually theres thons of other nice settings to tweak which the stock sms client doesnt have. And also nice themes to brighten up the experience alot.
You could also try to change lcd_density:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=992834
It will affect all apps though. But to the better in my opinion.
Or try a different system font, less dramatic than LCD density but may not realise the same benefits.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=989941
Or
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=994544
Well so far Go SMS might look like a keeper. IF ONLY I could actually get it to show the contact images and not just show blank "faces".
Anyone know a fix to that?

My problem is only with the texts. So I am trying out Go SMS for the time being. I don't feel the need nor desire to mess with the LCD density as I have already played around with LPP to get 5 rows in my app drawer as well as at least +1-2 grids both vertically and horizontal on the "home screens".
I tried out Go SMS last night, but i noticed that the phone did not remove the "1 new message" from the lockscreen when i read the sms with Go SMS. Do you know how to fix this?

[Q] Not receiving SMS

Hey guys, i have a pretty serious problem with SMS messaging. It seems like my Milestone refuses to receive SMS messages. I've been using FroyoMOD and now i have Cyanogen 7 RC3 from kabaldan. With both of them i've experienced this issue. And it's always the same.. after like a month or so from when i flash the ROM..it's happening again. It's really annoying and people are yelling at me for ignoring them So, if anybody knows what's the deal or has experienced the same issue.. i'll be more than glad if you had any suggestions. For now i pretty much think it might be something like kernel-related or whatever.. i don't really know
Thanks in advance and sorry for my bad english.
install advanced task killer, open the sms app, go to advance task killer and uncheck the sms app...with this setting you can receive sms...
forgot to mention that i use handcent or chomp sms..not the stock app. that also might be the problem. i tried rebooting and i don't think i have any task killer that kills my sms app. unless the task killer is integrated w/ the ROM. Anyway, gonna try this.
Got the same problem here and it's driving me crazy.
I've taken a look at the log and you can clearly see the sms arriving, because android is starting the sms app. But it get's killed before it can safe the sms. I believe it's due to a memory shortage. I've tried several different memory management settings and also tried to fix the sms app in memory by adjusting the oom_adj value (see thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1012330)
But nothing realy helped for long. I still loose many SMS also Whatsapp mostly does not notify me about new messages. Push mail works most of the times. Gtalk notifications I'd say work only in 50% of all cases. I'll probably downgrade to CM6. The milestone simply has not enough memory for Gingerbread.
Is your data memory low?
there is a bug when getting lower than ~20mb of free memory,
(last time I ran in that problem was in 2.1, so i'm not sure if releavent to 2.2 and up)
Yes, it's quite low and can possibly be below 20mb at some times. When I look at it it's usually around 30 Mb. I can get more free memory by adjusting the memory manager settings, but that only means it kills background apps even more agressively, or so I understand it.

Handcent seems impossible to run even on stock telus froyo http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12675946&postcount=13
I'm going to reinstall it and test with minfree values of 6, 8, 26, 16, 16, 32.
Hancent is always in the 4th or 5th slot so maybe that will work.
well i just flashed latest MIUI, sent sms to my number and received it.. i think i had SuperCharged minfree from you zeppelinrox. well i guess it's always the same: i flash new ROM, it works and after some time it stops. what the hell.. the thing is i never used stock messaging app, that might be the cause.
I use supercharge script with aggressive 2...moreover i use advance task killer...i didn't lose any sms...before that sometimes I didnt receive any sms...you have to unselect your app for sms(stock one, handcent, chompsms)...I use stock sms app and everything is working...
Its seems you'be got me wrong, I mean applications data memory, not device ram.

You're right. I got you wrong. I've got plenty of application memory. I've had low applications data memory a few month ago and it took me days to realize taht this causes the phone not to receive any sms. But as soon as you free up memory all SMS seem to be coming through.

by the way, What do you mean by "I've taken a look at the log"?
by the way, just got another problem... seems like everytime i flash MIUI ROM (and maybe any other ROM, idk) and recover my messages from backup with SMS Backup & Restore, the phone sends out by itself like 5 messages always to the same people. It happened like 3 times so far.. and it's pretty much possible that i flashed it 3 times.. but i think that might be more like the sms backup-related issue. The 5 msgs seem to have something like hasn't-been-sent-yet flag or whatever.. seriously, i just feel like throwing the phone out the window right now.
Maybe it's application issue?
I've been using "SMS Backup+" for long awhile (probably since november when I first flashed MIUI)
and never ran into problem.

Is used the Debuger from the Android SDK. When you connect your phone to the computer you can log almost everything with it in realtime.
Btw. I've just migrated to MIUI to try if SMS arrive here more reliably. But I'm not yet sure I like the user interface. It's rather different from CM7.

You need to install the Android SDK from Google. Since you know adb I guess you allready have it. In the SDK there's a file called ddms.bat. That starts the debugger.
Same stuff here...
I´ve had similar issues relating the sms thingy. I´m going to try that app killer thing to see how it goes.

well i have an observation. after i stopped using all sms backup apps, the problem is gone. and by sms backup app i mean those that backup to gmail, not to sdcard. if you have an app that checks for new sms's and automatically backes them up, then get rid of it.. if you need an one time backup, use SMS Backup & Restore.
like i said, getting rid of automatic sms backup apps did the trick for me.
