FM Radio on TyTNII?

Is it possible to use the existing hardware within the TyTNII for receiving FM radio signals? Surely it'd be a case of utilising the same hardware used for WiFi (802.11x = 2.4GHz), but at a lower frequency (FM 88.0MHz-108.0MHz)..
I was disappointed that FM radio was not an included feature of the TyTNII, however I'm happy with just about everything else about it. The only comparable phone that I was considering is the Eten X500+ glofiish which does have FM radio.
If there is already an FM radio application, please hook me up.

NOPE kaiser does not have fm transmitter ...

if it was simply the case of utilizing the same hardware.......then surely, every single ppc with wifi could be modded to receive fm radio signal. holy cow, you know what i realized, my laptop has wifi too! i'm sooo gonna mod it to receive fm radio

just because they use the same term "radio frequency" doesn't always mean that they're interchangeable. so let's review this... since TyTn II has WiFi radio chip is there any software to turn it into:
satellite dish receiver?
citizen band transceiver?
(hd)tv tuner?
microwave oven?
fm radio? ... maybe not
bluetooth - there's a dedicated component/module for this
GPS - there's a dedicated component/module for this
but who knows if there was a disabled chip that can potentially be activated (as long as the hardware is there and accessible), there might be possibilities

one word: SEARCH!
there is a LONG thread on this in one of the kaiser sections which has long been buried which has determined that the kaiser does not have the proper hardware to receive FM radio signals. the touch cruise can receive them IIRC but the kaiser cannot due to the lack of a needed chip.

Threads like this should be closed the second they are posted. Sorry if i sound like a know it all, but i am a amateur radio operator, hence I have alo't of experience in the radio field. Using a modulated 2.4ghz transciever in impossible to re-modulate it to the am/fm bands. it just wont work.
second. you have to have a on board antenna and a tuner that is resonant on those freq's and the kaiser/tilt does not.
Third. Dutty has been tinkering on a idea of getting it to work, and following what he is thinking it might work, however the reception most likely will be limited.
Fourth. If a radio is such a big deal then buy a am/fm portable radio, or buy a sony w580i,
Fifth. SEARCH, there are plenty of threads regarding this.

I posted this earlier on the Kaiser General tread but go no replies:
Okay before anyone points out to me I am aware that HTC Kaiser does not have a FM tuner on board.
I have been looking at various attachment for Ipods which have FM radio capabilities.

There are plenty more types out there.
I am wondering if it would be possible to hook one of these devices using the mini USB port on the Kaiser and write a software which would use the FM radio tuner on these devices. I know these devices are custom built for Ipods but a low level code should in principle be able to access the hardware and use it.
Any thoughts?

My second thought is Just get a portable AM/FM radio.. If your going to carry around something to plug into your phone then you shouldn't care.

As for buying a portable radio, I know it would be the easiest solution but if someone can programme to use the radio via the USB it would be a nicer solution.

Motorola S705 SoundPilot works pretty good. Music sounds a tad bit better than average, but not near as good as the S9s or HT820s

The Snapdragon chip has FM in it.
But the Liquid doesn't have FM, dunno if it's disabled or took out (hardware)

So what I read is not a fantasy, I hope someone develops a utility that allows us to use it!

I think its the bluetooth chip that have FM receiver, not the CPU.

If Bluetooth chip is same then Liquid should have radio and since F1 has radio and F1 and Liquid hardware are pretty much the same, I think there is big possibility Liquid to have radio, which is disabled.
Also I have seen in a dump from HTC Espresso a radio application.

bluetooth might be because android just started supporting bt 2.1 in eclair (who knows if updating the radio will make it work in 2.1 instead of 2.0)... fm radio who knows...

It occurs to me that we are experiencing growth Andorid day to day, who knows if in a not too distant future we will also see an application that runs the FM receiver

Exactly, giving the limited resources Acer has to making Android phones (probably just ramping up), they decided to skip on developing software drivers for the FM radio since they figured most people will use 3G streaming. but I like FM radio since it uses way less power and for those who don't have a data plan to burn through. Hopefully someone is able to write software drivers for the FM radio.

Some notes on this subject:
1.Acer has little to nothing to do to get the FM working, it's broadcom who makes the bluetooth (and thus FM) driver. What Acer has to do is only a GUI, which isn't hard to do
2.Nexus One has the same chip (ok, not the same, but they share the same driver), and doesn't have FM enabled either, that makes me think their might be some problem somewhere. (but the previous posts stating that using FM on a recent smartphone is unusual seems like a good guess.)
3.I've seen linux FM drivers for BCM4325, in Samsung Galaxy ROM (It's the btld daemon)
The thing is that this driver is fully closed source and doesn't use the bluez stack (linux bluetooth stuff), that's perhaps the reason why Acer and Google decided not to use it.
Anyway these chips are used by N1, Samsung Galaxy (I7500), iPhone 3GS, HTC HD2, HTC Touch Pro2, well, all brand new shiny phones, so it's likely someone of these developers will get something at some point

No, milestone have TI wl1271, we have Broadcom bcm4325

Hardware mods

I know this had been covered before but for the benefit of the newer crowd this is a discussion of modifications, software and hardware. I currently am working on an in dash mount for my streak. I like the idea of having a touch screen radio in my vehicle. The past two attempts have resulted in failure but I think my third attempt will turn out well.
Any others out there?

I did not even consider to look into this as an option. since I read more than I respond the link to the server is hard to find by digging through the forums so I have it saved. I am guessing I need to flash both of the zips to get it to work? I am going to do the usual back up of the system and give it a go. Thanks for the info i will see how well it works.

Ok, you got me. How do the zip files install? I tried cwm and update method, so maybe it is a newer version of cwm?

As for installing, read around, instructions are here.

I did some looking around, what I read us that the wifi edition does not support the radio function. I used the forum search feature, new to that, and after ask the Web searching and forum searching I turned up nothing. Did I search wrong our the wrong topic? I did find the radio app but there is no sound from it even after tuning and turning it on and it required super user permissions.

I believe that all BCM43xx chips support fm radio, at least that's what they say on their spec sheets.
But many devices simply dont have the fm drivers installed and active.
Out of all the dell devices, only the SPro has official radio support. (All dell devices use BCM4329 chips except for the S5, which uses a BCM4325)
They attempted to get radio working on the S5 but they never released anything that worked.
BCM43xx chips are combo chips that support the following:
802.11
Bluetooth
FM radio
Obviously they cant not support wifi or BT, they're pretty much a requirement now, but the fm radio part isnt.
You'd need a headset to use it though, as it universally uses the headphone wires as it's antenna.

As soon as I get some stable builds going, I would love to put FM radio into my builds.

Yea I had to put in a headset for the radio app to function I just didn't get any sound. Still not sure what is wrong but I'm not giving up yet until there are no options left. I'm running the wifi only version of Steve's ROM so I'm not sure what all options are enabled in his roms. I started out on an OG Droid so modding and testing is nothing new to me I've bricked devices a few times, just late to the streak scene. My last device was a Bionic and I bricked that one more that the OG Droid.

I can't seen to find the needed files to get it to work. Obviously the streak 5 files won't work, tried two radio apps I found here. One was a very basic radio app that didn't work and the other was a version that had a better GUI but still either did not function or no sound. It gets difficult to be this late in the game and find old information that gets buried. Do I need any of the radio files from the server? I believe the host is the Manii, I apologize if that is spelled wrong I do everything I can from the streak.
Update: I'm taking a guess here but the fm.**** file should go in the system/bin folder to get the fm function to work?

Here's a summary of FM support on dell devices (and it's extended family's):
S5: Sorta has fm radio support (look up "fm_hcitool" and "spirit fm")
S7: None that we're aware of
S10: None that we're aware of
SPro: Working radio support built in
V: None that we're aware of
"Streak2 5": None that we're aware of (opus one)
"Streak2 7": Currently confirming (sterling)
The Qisda devices (S5/S7/V/"S2 5") all have comments about fm support, but it's completely broken.
You might be able to try spirit fm, otherwise short of fm being natively supported in the rom: fm radio isnt going to work.

This is completely OT: but lenovo found the best way to support multiple devices:
The LePad S2007 and S2010 use the same, identical rom even though they're different devices (7" tab and 10" tab)
The S2007 is (likely) what would have been the Streak2 7 if dell didnt cancel "sterling"

I understand you are looking at the hardware level. Just figured I'd share what I use as an app... WiFi only streak7 in my car on an official mounted dell home dock in the dash. Then tethered to my cell for data, 3.5mm out on the dock connected to my head unit, all sounds play through the car.

So asI have read the fm won't work on my S7. Too bad it would have been nice. I did try to add the fm file and it did not work on any application for native fm radio. Still love the device though. I'll hold out until JB works, if the bugs can get squashed.

Does this phone have the hardware? Is there a radio app or is anyone with the First able to use an app like Spirit FM?

This phone does not have FM hardware as far as I'm aware, though I could be wrong of course. I wouldn't count on it at the very least.

Thanks, I was under the impression that most HTC phones had FM capability; but on GSMArena, out of 88 HTC Android phones, only 55 have radio. Some low end phones are left out, and I guess this lack almost fits with the First's intended tier in terms of features. Of their previous Facebook phones, the HTC ChaCha had it but the Status did not.

According to Techradar, it does have a built-in FM radio. I have yet to try it out.
There's also a built-in FM radio in addition to support for AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, AMR, iMelody, MIDI and MP3 music formats.

I've seen the TechRadar article, however it seems to be reporting on second hand information.
The Engadget review states:

Again this is hardly confirmation as they're just reiterating things from a spec sheet somewhere.
HTC doesn't bother to list FM capability even for phones that do have it, like the HTC One. And there are phones that have FM radios but no app by default, like the HTC Rezound and HTC One V.

I had read the stock FM app would support recording too, a "first" for HTC.
Is this phone DOA ? Does anyone have one and is there an FM app ?

I sampled a First in an AT&T store and it did not have an FM app.

it does have fm radio, i tried some fmradio apk installation, and it showed me msg of "this will replace ur installed app"
but when i let it install, it wont get install, showing me msg, "app not installed"
so it clear, there is a fm radio, but the thing is hidden..
anyone who can help this thing get it done??
or atleast show me a correct path, or direction, im ready to work it out myself.

oh yeah they do say it has fm radio... hmm thats interesting, im gonna follow this thread and report if i find anything on my own
