Hey fellas, im glad i found this site, looks like alot of good info for a beginner. This will be my first phone that i will be attempting to tweak, but i had a few basic questions that warranted some advice:
if this was your first high end phone (only had a treo 650/680 prior) would you try and load a different rom and all the fixings, or just deal with a hard reset on the AT&T rom and try and fix what you could with cab files.
does a new cooked rom void any warrenty? or could it be reversed if i chose to distribute this phone to one of my employees when i upgraded in the future.
what was the first thing yall did to your tilt when you got it to instantly make it a better device?
thanks in advance guys.

I will make a couple of suggestions. Read A LOT before asking questons and make use of the search funtion. The other is if your new to Windows Mobile, many users that have been drinking the Palm koolaid have a hard time migrating to WM. Be patient, they are two very different OS's.
To flash a non at&t rom will require unlocking, that alone will void a warranty.
i thought i read somewhere else that AT&T were condoning the unlocking of these phones, since they sold the unlocked versions at a different price, but that could have been hear/see.
Well my first PDA was a
Compaq Aero 2150
I then went onto the smart phone market (years later lol) with
Siemens SX66 (HTC Blue Angel)
iPaq 6515a
iPaq 6945
and now
HTC Kaiser / AT&T Tilt
Flashing a NON AT&T ROM does not require unlocking the phone. You can flash whatever ROM you want (provided it's for the Kaiser). I'd make sure that you install Olipro SPL though. Prevents bricking the phone.
well if i want to flash to a different ROM, like the HTC one, is there a way i can revert back to the original at&t ROM if i had to send it back for any reason? i just dont want to have to eat the cost of this thing, it'd be my company doing the eating. which my budget wouldnt enjoy.
oh wait i think i read what you said wrong, what i have on it now IS a AT&T ROM, so it WOULD have to be unlocked first...right?
by the way i absolutely hate this theme, i like the big clock on the HTC ROM. i finally getting used to WM6 though. just hate the look of it.
I bought a ATT tilt and its unlocked. I'm using it with tmobile. Does anybody know if att released new roms? I see this at my reset
1.27.12.11
22.45.88.o7H
1.57.00.00
If there is something newer, how would i dload it, and what features does it add?
The only thing I did to my unit was do a hard reset and didnt install the att software.
u can upgrade your radio, and you might not want to use at&t's rom. Try the roms that are in Kaiser upgrading portion of this forum. Make sure you install hardspl properly before attempting to upgrade radio/rom.
But what kind of features do these upgrades do?
What do you mean?? Each rom is for a specific reason and they tell you what is in the release.

Right. Is there someplace that tells me what the upgrades does before dloading it? I wanted to know if it would be worth the upgrade.

If you need to ask, then no. All ROM Chefs include the relevant info in thier original posts. If you are incapable of reading english or are inept at using the multiple search options available, then go back to using your Razr. Hello Moto?
Hey Nick, before talking and sticking foot in your mouth with your childish remarks and quick comebacks, go READ my first post.
I can't believe you tell me that I'm incapable of reading english.. When you yourself can't read what the post is about before responding.
I was asking about the ATT roms. I did NOT ask about the ROMs that people are putting together. But I see your quick 10 year old whip got the best of you by letting you read only the last post to my thread, in which the person was telling me to use the hacked roms.
I was trying to figure out if it would be worth trying to do the normal updates to the att tilt.
edit: Editing so I don't sound like you. I can see how your mind thought I was talking about the cooked roms if you read ONLY the last responses by people. When I asked what they would do, I was talking more like a generalized response on why I would want the cooked rom vs the att. And by they way, try and do a search for: ROM, att, update, patches and tell me how many responses come back. That would be nuts reading as almost every subject in this forum is about those words.

if you dont use the "hacked" roms, you wont get to use your device's full potential. It took me about 4 1/2 months before i got the balls to hardspl my kaiser and flash a rom on it, i was suprised on what i was missing out.
there are rarely any "normal" updates for the tilt. But keep an eye out in feb, rumored windows 6.1 will hit our devices soon!
Ah ok. I didn't want to do it as I finally got the unit working ok. So I was thinking if I was going to do any updates to it I would stick to the "safer" att update being that all I needed is a att sim to put me back on the network if need.
But if 6.1 comes out wouldn't I want to dload the one that att (if they even would give an update) gives for this phone?

Yeah, normally the manufacterer htc provides the update, then just maybe if att decides to be nice, they provide it for the tilt a few months later. But im pretty sure you can install the version htc provides, seeing as developers here create a "tilt" fix soonafter (when the time comes, let a few people take the bullet and report problems ). So if you want to download it from ATT to be safe, you can. But if you know what you are doing your options expand exponentially. And its not hard to know what you are doing.
If you follow these simple ideas, you normally dont have to worry about hard resetting / returning to manufacturer.
-Most programs wont cause a hard reset / "defect" the device so download away!!
-Becareful with registry edits, and dont edit anything that you dont know what it is. Worst case scenario-> hard reset
-Once you plan on moving on to modifying your kaiser, you must install hardspl. This "might" brick your device, but if you follow instructions its not likely. With hardspl, it basically insures you that you will never brick your device via rom flashes.
-As for red light of deaths those are really random, many speculations and possible ressurections are within these forums, but its really likely you will have to do a RMA.
First I'd like to mention that I am grateful for all the developers on XDA working on these phones. I'm no programmer but I know plenty who are in all fields so I can appreciate what you are all doing.
I just wanted to create this thread to see how close we are to getting our hands on the HardSPL for Rhodium and any updates on development.
I've had my Touch Pro 2 for about a week and half now and already bored with it. The phone itself is great, but Windows Mobile 6.1 seriously sucks.
I really want to start using Windows Mobile 6.5, which brings me to why I created this post.
If anyone can shed some light on this I'd appreciate it.

Olipro and cmonex are still searching for mobile devices with hynix memory to test some stuff.
In short, don't expect anything soon and have patience
what
how do we know if it has that memory so others can help look.
just asked permission to Olipro if it was ok if I wrote a tutorial regarding this...
Uhm...I'll open a new thread with step-by-step instructions on how to help them out
Hope it will help them. Gimme about an hour to write a detailed tutorial.
*EDIT* Tutorial is up: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4035499#post4035499
hmm this thread will be good for the usual "hardspl waititing posts".. when release comes, we (olinex) will just create the real hspl thread, so mods will not have to clean up for release (like for topaz they had to).
as to why this flash type checking is so important: on topaz the hynix ones really just got lucky by not getting their mfg partition corrupt. (no one got it corrupt but as i said that was luck) i want to avoid any such problems on rhodium.

Does this mean there is a feasible solution for Samsung based units ?
I am surprised that it makes a difference based on the fact HTC wont have made a separate spl for hynix based units. and rom upgrades will contain the same info...
can hard spl for samsungs be realeased with a link to the tutorial on how to ensure you have samsung?
darides tutorial suggests most people seem to have samsung anyway.
infact has ther been a hynix unit seen in the wild?
Cheers

Perhaps Olinex can make a version for samsung that checks on the sspl that the memory is samsung or not. to avoid bricks or other problems.
I have not seen or know anyone with hynix memory on their tp2 after checking about 5 different units from my friends and family they are all samsung. My vodafone one is samsung too.
it's great news for me
is it a problem if everybody have the samsung chipset ?
just letting you know no updates yet - was busy in real life

Please can we have an ETA for the release of the HardSPL.
Hi Guys,
I can't put into words how much I respect and revere the information posted on your web-site and I apologise for asking the million dollar question. But I need to know.
Can we please have an ETA / timeline for the release of the HardSPL for our HTC Rhodium.
I hate my Vodafone UK branded HTC Touch Pro 2. It is red and so am I with anger. Joking aside I love HTC standard ROM's. The last one I put on my HTC Touch Pro was amazing.
Please, keep up the work....
Kind regards...

If you want to flash the HTC Shipped ROM, look out for the Goldcard methods. I'm not going into detail here because it's off topic and well documented else where. If all else fails cmonex normally helps via PM.

I can totally understand people begging for this. I nervously waiting for it to, but not to install custom ROMs. I'm waiting for it to get blackberry connect running. To achieve that I need to manipulate the device ID in the ROM itself, to fool RIM, let them think it's running on a proper device. But to flash this manipulated ROM I need HSPL (or does someone know a way to manipulate the device ID (HTC-Rhodium) in another way?).
However, asking and begging does not help or make stuff easier or getting it done faster. We all need to be brave and patient and wait a bit and let olipro and cmonex get this stuff done.

Sorry to go a bit OT here but I am interested in your info about Blackberry Connect. I have just come to the TP2 from a Storm and one thing that is lagging behind with the TP2 IMO is the push email, would the 'updated' ROM you are proposing allow me to use the pushmail service from BB ?
Thanks,
Neil

Have you tried to change your AKU?
If NO you can change this:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/Versions/Aku
and put this:
.1.4.3
Hi, I'm buying a G1 tomorrow, and i just have a few questions. Is it worth rooting??? and what are the Pros and Cons of rooting the G1??
Yes its worth rooting. Everything is pro and no cons. To much stuff to list.
oooo ok. I heard that if you hacked it, you will lose the warranty for the phone. is that true???
Its well worth it to have a rooted g1. Tethering, theming, audio hack, etc.
Just make sure you go through the required reading and educate yourself before you just dive in. There are TONS of great threads and tutorials around here if you search.
The hardest part is deciding which ROM you want! There are lots of those as well.
You can always revert back to stock firmware if you need to.

Just don't call T-Mobile up and tell them you did that. There is no way for them to find out. Many people have gotten replacement phones while having root.
I got a replacement on a bricked G1 that was stuck on a custom bootscreen.. Blatant evidence of tinkering. T-mobile never said a word.
Ok, thank you guys. Soo that implies that it doesnt do anything to your warranty. And how can i avoid the phone from bricking???
follow this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480
IMO the two most important steps is making sure you have a PVT board, and making sure to flash the new Radio before flashing the new SPL.
EDIT: the only way to truly "brick" your phone is to mess up when flashing the Radio/SPL. that is one of the most common misnomers in this forum. the G1 is impossible to brick when flashing ROMs. this is why I say the two most important steps are verifying you have a PVT board and the sequence of flashing radio/spl.

It does invalidate your warranty in theory, but if you don't tell them they don't seem to check for it. I got my girlfriend to phone up and put on her best ditzy voice.. they never even asked her about rooting lol.
The main cause of bricking is flashing the 'special' spl without first flashing the new radio rom.. which is well documented all over the place.. ergo, the main cause if bricking is not reading things properly. Don't become a statistic.

Read, read, read. Read then reread. Make sure you understand what you are reading before you try. There are guides here to help you with everything. Just make sure to use the search button before you ask questions.
ok. i hacked a lot of things, but every device is different, soo i do have some experience. I was just curious about the warranty part. but thanks for the advice.

Just don't worry about the warranty, they won't know. Did you ever worry about the warranty on other things you hacked.
im just wondering if anyone has had to pay for their repair after being found out about rooting. also is their any warranty to cover bricks?

There is really no way for T-Mobil (or HTC for that matter) to know that you have rooted your phone. If you bought your phone from T-Mobil, the warranty will cover it as long as you tell them that you didn't do anything to brick your phone. Don't mention rooting, hacking or anything like that. Simply let them walk you through the recovery process and when that fails, they will send you a refurbished phone per the warranty. If you didn't buy your phone from T-Mobil, you can send it to HTC for repair but again, don't mention anything about rooting or hacking. HTC will charge you if you send them your phone and they discover it was only soft bricked (ie bootlooping on the android screen and not the G1 screen). This would be proof positive that you were tinkering around. Bottom line is: never mention rooting, hacking, custom ROMS etc, and make sure you know that your phone is truly bricked BEFORE you send it in. As stated all around this site, there are only a handful of ways to truly brick your G1.
If you want a foolproof way of covering a potential bricked phone, buy the insurance policy from T-Mobil. The deductible to get a new G1 if something happens is usually around $100 but thats cheaper than buying a new phone.
ok thanks does that insurance policy cover bricked phones and do you know if it is available in the uk
If its truly bricked they wont know any of the modifications you made to it except your splash screen (The first thing you see when you turn on the phone) If you don't change that you should be fine. For anything else, you can always flash the DREAIMG.nbh file and it will be returnable
Is there any insurance from htc I can get to cover bricks
You can always take the safer route and not flash any ROM that requires Haykuro's SPL aka DangerSPL if you are not confident on the entire process. Just go with HardSPL and either JesusFreke's or Cyanogen's ROMs. That being said, you can still brick your device if you didn't follow the instructions carefully but at the very least, it is not as risky as using Haykuro's SPL.
And as usual, before you make any modifications, read read and reread all the threads about the particular ROM that you're attempting to flash. Spend a day combing the threads and have a mental image of the steps you'd have to perform before flashing
Ok I'm looking to flash the cyanogen rom with eng spl but I'm wondering what do I do if I brick my phone?

Hello all;
I know some people who have tried flashing ROMs in the wrong way, or used bad ROMs, or maybe used ROMs for other devices on theirs, which made them end up with a dead device in the end.
And because HTC doesn't support such misuse of the device, you might end up throwing the device away...
Anyway; if you have a dead HTC Diamond, or any other HTC device, I can fix it for you.
My prices are cheap because I deal with such devices daily, and it depends on the damage happened to the device.
For more info; please don't hesitate to PM me.
Good luck all
Where To Send It To?
Hello there. May I know your location? And how much is considered cheap?
