questions (not answered by dummy guide) - Touch HD Windows Mobile ROM Development

I have a few easy questions that I would love for someone to answer
1. will installing, for instance, Miri's rom improve the speed and stability of my phone?
2. Are there any requirements for installing certains roms? like WM version or similar, or is it enough that I simply have a Touch HD?
3. will installing a rom mean that everything I had earlier on the phone disappears? (calender entries, contacts, programs and so on)
4. what roms are good, are there any that are way faster and more stable than others or what's the big difference between different roms? Is Miri's a good start (seems like the most popular one..)?
Thanks in advance!!

Probably not - as a rule of thumb your stock ROM is the most appropriate for your device. But flashing a new ROM can add a lot of new features to your phone.

A new ROM means a new WM+everything that goes with it. The single most important thing is flashing the right ROM for the right device - a Touch HD ROM on a Touch HD.

This is a matter of taste - each ROM is unique (different mix of features, pieces of software, etc) - you can consider each one as a unique work of art - you will probably like some more than the others, but this is simply a matter of personal taste.

Wow, thanks for that fast answer. Appreciate it and the answers I got!

just my 2 cents about question #1, based on my experience many roms (if not all of them) are generally faster than stock roms (or at least faster than ITA TIM stock rom). it's however difficult to tell WHAT means faster (smoother? less boot time? less app start time? etc?).

To your question 3:
If you sync your mobile with your computer with outlook then everything can be brought back to your phone after the rom upgrade by syncing again.
There are other backup programs aswell.
You can even just copy your pim.vol from the Touch HDs root directory to a safe place, and copy it back after romupgrade

ok, I appreciate you need a few answers, but if your queries were about things not answered in a certain thread you should have asked your queries in that thread. No need for another thread

New User on Touch Pro

Hi all,
I am a new user to PDA phones and I have read through the wiki about this cell,
but I still have sth to ask.
1. What is Manila?
2. How can configure or add themes and tab icons in the TF3D?
Please give me a hand in starting to know more about the machine, Thx
Someone can expand or correct, this is just how I understand it to be.
1. Manilla\Rhodium = TouchFlo3d interface from HTC. It will be called TF3d as well.
Titanium = Windows Mobile 6.5 overlay that is turned on and off via Start\Settings\Today\Items\Windows Default
2. use TF3d to search. So search 'add tabs tf3d' and see if that helps.
Thanks for the answer,
I also see that there is a lot of topics about err,
upgrading the official ROMs into Custom made ROMs,
Is there anything I should notice about upgrading ROMs,
and also wt is the advantage of using 'em?

read the stickies and make sure you know what are the steps to follow to flash a rom. follow them literally. if you don't you might "brick" your phone. when u get used to flashing, the process will be easy to follow, just take your time getting used to WinMo before flashing.
Moving from a stock ROm to a Custom ROM is easy and worth the 'risk' in my opinion. You can find all you need within the Wiki to get started with the flashing of HARDSPL. You will then choose a custom ROM and then flash that ROM to your device. You will lose all data on the phone so make sure you sync before you start.
I personally am using the Energy Rom 3.0 series and I like it.
A cooked ROM or a custom ROM is created by a person (usually with a ROM kitchen) and it removes items the cook thinks are not needed and they often add in tweaks, programs and graphical enhancements.
Some people are looking for a custom ROM that makes their device fast, while others are looking to maximize their TouchFlo3D experience. I persoanlly use Energy ROM because it is Windows Mobile 6.5, it contains Titanium (the WM6.5 touch friendly interface) and because the cook put in plenty of programs and tweaks that I would do on my own.
After I install the ROM, I do go through and install all my own programs. Not every cooked ROM will match your own needs so that is when people begin cooking their own ROM within a kitchen.
I have downloaded the kitchen and attempted to cook a ROM but I find using someone else's is a bit easier.
MSVC is Microsoft Voice Command. So when you are looking for ROMS you might see that acronym.

[Q] Roms for the tilt 2 by htc

I have a tilt 2 with 8/30/2010 update n its suck i was wondering wats a good custom rom to use that dosent freezes up or runs super slow n were to download it at
We get at least a dozen new users asking this question every couple of weeks. The response is always the same. This is like asking a community of peers which pants are the most comfortable. It's a matter of opinion. Flashing doesn't harm your device at all (if you follow instructions), and it's simple to restore it to factory settings if you need to send it in for repairs or replacement. Therefore, with no downside to flashing ROMs, just keep flashing them until you find something you like.
Most ROM threads will tell you within the first couple of posts most of the goals of the ROM, and whether they are cooked for speed, looks, or stability. There are also pictures on most all of them so you can see it before you flash. Flashing takes minutes, so why not just spend a day or so testing a bunch of them out. I've been flashing for a long time and I still don't stick to just one ROM.

I got the same problem with this ROM from AT&T. I called HTC and they admit that there is a memory leak problem in the HTC Sense built into that version of the ROM. So does anyone have a ROM with a better (or later) HTC Sense that works, i.e. fast, no memory leak, and no lockup?
Thanks.
The best advice that can be given to those in your situation (besides HardSPL'ing your device) it to
1) Pick a ROM on this very board.
2) Flash it to your phone.
3) Use your phone.
4)
a) If you like it, then your problem is solved.
b) If you don't like it, do steps 1-3 until you get to step 4a)
Software Version 1.59.502.3
Will this new software version be a huge upgrade from my current version without losing any default features that I now have?
Consider using Wildchild's ROMs. They are pretty much stock look/feel, but faster and much more stable.

Yep. Bluetooth works great. Actually everything works great. Its a ROM where everything works as it should. Keep in mind, bloatware is removed, but all the core stuff works perfect.
Thanks - where is the best place to read up on with instructions on how to do this?
Try the flashing your first Rhodium ROM tutorial sticky.
Thanks - it appears there are several versions of the rom, so I have a lot of reading to figure out what the differences are.
Do you have any preference?

I use the 2.1 ROM from Wild Child and it is absolutely the best. Has everything I need and nothing I don't. It is fast, stable, in my mind, the way it should have been from the beginning. It is a rock solid ROM.
This is the one I was going to flash on my phone, but after hours of working on it with F2505x4 we could not get it to flash. There was an issue with the HardSPL. I ended up flashing the updated AT&T stock rom instead for now.

Super Nova Q&A

Hey Guys I put together a Q&A thread for this rom to prevent tons of new threads about rom Spicific questions from new users.. Please feel free to post any questions here.
As Aslways there is no Flaming, name calling or the such.
No question is too noobish, But please look for your answer first.
Now for the info needed to help. In your post make sure to included the version of the rom you are using, modem, kernel, ext...
Also please give it some time for your question to be answered.

Would anyone like to post there likes and dislikes about the ROM so people who do not have it can know what to expect?

This thread is for issues related to the rom. Likes and dislikes are user based and will not do any good as for what to expect and all custom roms are a best for you type of thing. I could say that I like this this and this about the rom but some one else would say that they dont like the same things. See my point? Each rom has an outline for the rom in the first post.
Love the rom. I'm on 2.1 and have noticed my camera won't work, just FCs. Extracted some old phoenix and SN roms I had on my phone and tried to copy the .apk and camera firmware into system/app using root explorer and reboot. No luck. Any ideas? I would prefer not to reflash.
Thanks in advance.

In addition to the point that each user/device could respond differently to the ROM/Modem/Kernel. The 3 of us could be running identical setup's and all have very different experiences

I am running;
Rom: super nova 2.1
Kernel: speedmod-k13b-500hz #54
Baseband version: i9000ugjk4
The problems I am experiencing aren't a major deal, just thought I would mention them.
1. When I am connected to wifi and try and use the Facebook app I get a connection timeout message. While using at&t data I don't.
2. I get a FC when trying to open the Fox News app.
Enjoying Adams and teams work, thanks.

Try restoring the stock email.apk that came with the rom, no idea why they're tied together but they are.
As for FCing on the Fox News app, I got that too and just uninstalled it, not sure why it was doing that.

SN 2.3
Has anyone checked their "About Phone" info under the settings after flashing the 2.3 download and still see their "Build number" as Supernova 2.1??
Shouldn't this be 2.3 instead of 2.1 or was the revision number suppose to stay the same this update?

Thank you for letting me know. I went through a few pages, but I must have not looked at early enough postings to see anyone comment about it.
I could tell the update took effect when the kernal was updated to Speedmod and some other graphical difference when flashing from 2.1, but just wanted to make sure.
Also, does anyone know where to grab the 2.1 ringtones from the zip file? There was a nice one in there that I'd like to get back.
Thanks in advance

I am on 2.3 and this is my favourite one so far. Really enjoy the Phoenix team roms. With other roms I have noticed that when you touch the screen the soft home keys do not light up. If you touch the keys themselves they light up for only 3 seconds. I found I had to use an app/widget called keep the lights on for that issue. With this rom however, the soft keys work perfect. If I touch anywhere on the screen they light up for 10 seconds or more just like my stock did.
If I ever check out another Rom is there something I could import from this to keep that great feature? I don't think I will be flashing for a while after this one. But once flashaholism sets in sometimes I have no choice...lol

Thinking About Migrating
Hello all, I've been a loyal Perception user since I purchased my Captivate and tried out several of the active ROMs. I've started to look for a new ROM since DG announced that the Perception line was defunct. I have a few questions regarding Supernova:
1) Are there other themes, loaded stock, with the ROM. The black one from the screenshot isn't really my style.
2) Does this ROM include the three-button fix? My phone is one of the unlucky few that cannot boot to recovery mode via button holding.
3) For those of you who have flashed many a ROM and decided to use Supernova, what do you like about it best? Why did you select this ROM over the others available?

1) Yes there are other themes, I am currently running SN JS5 version and using Nunhugger's Absolution:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10254722&postcount=5
at this point, it appears most JPY/JS5 themes will work with any JPY/JK3/JS5 ROMS
2) My phone also does not have 3 button. But it has the extended power menu, long press on the power button gives you the option to boot to Download, Recovery, Reboot, etc.
3) Honestly, I move between Phoenix, Supernova, and FireFly. Adam and Team have a level of detail I havent seen around, but the big part is the support. There is NO flaming on his threads, so people arent affraid to ask question if they cant figure something out. They are all solid ROM's very stable, very well put together. In the end I couldnt tell you one of them is better than the other, just a little bit different
it's a long way to go.my captive's screen is so cool.

[Q] Which ROM and how do I get it on my Milestone running 2.2.1?

Hi everyone!
I hope I came to the right forum with this...
I (once upon a time) was a proud owner of a Milestone (A853). Then I was the content owner of a Milestone running Android 2.1. This turned into a disillusioned and never-to-buy-Motorola-again-ever Milestone owner when it took them ages to release an update to 2.2. Now that they did, I'm just plain angry. Their release is so ridiculously bad, it's a beta version at best. Therefore I have finally decided to finally get a custom ROM.
Now I did a bit of googling and found this forum and another site hosting ROMs (theunlockr.com/category/roms-2/android-roms-2/motorola-milestone-roms/ - can't post real links yet, sorry)
Seems like there are quite a few ROMs to choose from. Unfortunately I have no idea which one would be the best for my needs, nor do I know how I'd get them onto my stone...
Things that are important for my are (in that order):
- long battery life
- stable operation
- email via IMAP and Exchange
- camera, gps for My Tracks & Navigation
- sync with google calendar & contacts
- pdf & doc-viewer
- bluetooth and wifi-tethering (the later with WPA2)
- good performance
So I need help with two things: choosing the ROM best meeting these demands, and getting said ROM onto my phone. The tutorials I found so far were not very helpfull to me unfortunately, since they seemed to asume I already knew quite a few things and had a bunch of tools already installed. Is there something like a "dummies guide to flash your Milestone"?
And can someone recommend a certain ROM to me? Preferably one that isn't to hard to find and is easy to flash?
Also, do I loose the stuff stored on my SD-Card when I flash the phone? There are quite a lot of pictures and My Tracks, well, tracks, that I'd hate to loose.
tl,dr: Motorola sucks, I need help in choosing a ROM and getting it on my Milestone.
Thx,
Alex

I think you need to use TheFroYoMod, it's a very stable and battery friendly ROM. I don't want to brag, but I think my guide is very n00b friendly: CLICK
There is also a list of all ROM's available for the Milestone.
I'm using CM7 at the moment and i really love it, you also need to try this one out.
Installing a ROM doesn't touch your SD card outside of reading the install package.
Your choice of ROM is really a personal thing but a pretty safe bet to start with CyanogenMOD 6; it's one of the most common ROM's and it's very stable. While the Milestone is not "Officially" supported by CM, there are a ton of folks around here that have run it, and are quite familiar with it. Check out the link in the Milestone Dev section of this forum. As a first time flasher I'd stay away from CM7 at this time, it's still in development.
A couple of reminders:
-Your Milestone is not a DROID and is not compatible with DROID ROMS or guides.
-Always insure your battery is fully charged before flashing anything. Having a dead battery with a FUBAR ROM is bad.
-Back-up your stuff! Once you have the custom recovery loaded you can create a "Nandroid" back-up of your stock ROM (basically a disk image) through the custom recovery. This will give you something to fall back on if the ROM softbricks your device.
The guide posted above is a great guide. Way clearer then the one I followed originally. I highly recommend it.
thx 4 all your posts!
Actually I already flashed cm7rc3 at about 1:30am on sunday, after I worked my way through a lot of tutorials.
It works quite fine, only the galery-app is giving me trouble, but I guess that could be connected to me havin 1.4k photos on my sd-card. Guess it's time for some cleanup!
Thank you drae52 for pointing out the link (and thank you eXtink for putting it in your sig)! Especially the OR part is really helpfull, as I didn't know until now what all the options do and was afraid to touch any. Now I'm definitly looking forward to installing that adblocker!
Now that OR is set up good and propper and I figured out the procedure I think I'll try some other ROMs too in time. Thank you again for your help!

Can someone help pick out a rom?

Hi,
A (not so tech-y) friend of mine has a Samsung galaxy ace but is complaining about the speed of the device. I want to help him by installing a custom rom on the device. If been googling different roms but for the life of me i cant figure out which ones are stable and good and wich ones are amateuristic.
I was hoping one of you fine gentlemen could point me in the right direction.
These are the 'requirements'
- Optimized internal storage for installing apps (stock android?)
- As little bloatware as possible (owner only uses whatsapp/browser and facebook etc. He has no need for equilizers and whatnot)
- Fast and smooth (this is most important, android version doenst really matter. Which ever one is fastest)
- Stable/ no bugs. The owner of the device is not tech savvy so i dont want him to have to kill apps and deal with bugs etc.
- preferably built in kernel/overclocking so i dont have to do it myself
Any help will be much appreciated!
