Random Data Connections - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

Hey all,
I've had numerous random data connections on my XDA ignito since installing GenY's R5.3 which last for 8 hours + (until I physically disable it)
Although ive got a unlimited data plan through O2, this is annoying me no end and drainign my battery has a result.
Its even connecting itself throughput the night even though there has been no activity on the phone to cause it.
Ive installed Microsoft My Phone but the sync schedule is set to manual.
Installed cleanRAM and s2u2 but was happening before that.
Also unchecked 'download weather automatically' in the weather tab and the 'last update' confirms that.
Push internet is set to off in data settings under the internet tab.
Other than that, no other data programs have been installed short of whats on this ROM, ive set what i can find to manual.
I did enjoy the setting 'Disable all connections when device enters sleep' on the stock ROM that came with this phone but i've yet to see this setting re-appear on most ROMs ive seen.
Is there any programs on the sly in sense 2.1 that need to constantly check for updates?
Are there any tools to check what programs are accessing the data?
Can anyone suggest anything ive missed!?
Cheers for your help.

Search for Nodata app, it will help you disabling automatic data connection.

Data connection never drops

I was away for a week and upon returning my Tilt is exhibiting some strange behavior that's different from before.
Basically, data connections never drop. So once the first ActiveSync, use of Pocket IE, etc, occurs, the connection stays on forever. For example I just checked my phone and the connection has been active for over 16 hours (the phone sat hibernated for most of that time).
I could have sworn that previously, the connection would drop after some period of inactivity. The little H with the signal strength on the title bar would change back to the triangle antenna. But no more. I tried with HSDPA off too and saw the same problem (except I got a little 3G instead of a little H above the signal bars).
I even hard-reset my Tilt and this did not fix it.
What can explain why my data connections used to drop on their own before but suddenly stopped doing so? Basically, my phone used to behave as if the "disconnect after" KaiserTweak was enabled (even though I never enabled it) but it's now behaving as if "always on" is enabled (even though it is not enabled).
So you know about Kaiser Tweak - have you loaded Kaiser Tweak and set the setting? and it still behaves this way?
I cannot explain it - but if Kaiser Tweak fixes it do you still need an explanation?

I agree with Bill... If You have a solution that will work even though you haven't had to use it before, why not fix the problem a new way instead of Dwelling on the problem.
Maybe Check this. In Phone Goto Menu -> Data Tab. Check your Check Box on Disable data connections when device enters Sleep Mode. Soft Reset and see if that will fix it for you.
Thanks for the suggestions guys.
I didn't want to fix this with the KaiserTweak because it comes with a disclaimer that (a) it might not work with all programs and (b) is might prevent simultaneous voice and data calls. The latter seems more problematic; maybe this is not an issue with 3G/HDSPA (and only with the older data technologies)?
I can't find a data tab anywhere. I have a Tilt with stock ROMs... is the menu and data tab available somewhere? I'd like to try that suggestion.

If you don't have that tab the option has been "hidden" by the ROM Makers. So Though there is a way to get to it, It is One I don't know.
I would suggest then getting Schaps Advanced Config, Is what I use to put my Data Connections to off after three minutes. I haven't had any problems with simultaneous lovin' with Voice and Data.
Well I turned on the KaiserTweak for this and it works. Maybe I had it enabled before and didn't realize.
One thing I notice is that I always get the "connecting to" balloon pop-up when a connection is being established, even if I tell it to hide. So there's one annoyance, but it's better than having my battery drain down due to the constant connection.
Interestingly this never drop behavior coincided with the switch-over from the behavior of the 3G icon that goes to H only when a connection is established, to always showing the H icon. Could these 2 behaviors be connected somehow, and due to a change on AT&T's side?
You can turn off the notification by going to settings -> sounds and notifications -> notifications tab ->event = connection established, uncheck "display message on screen".
I was just experimenting and I found that enabling the "disconnect after" KaiserTweak prevents simultaneous voice and data. If a voice call is going, I cannot establish a data connection and if a call comes in the data connection drops. If the KaiserTweak setting is not enabled, I can get simultaneous voice and data.
My phone always shows the H icon.
It seems I have to choose between the stock setting of "connection never drops, and drains battery" and the KaiserTweak setting of "can't get simultaneous voice and data connections". Ouch!
Does BandSwitch use a different way to handle forcing the disconnections, or is going to boil down to the same registry setting that KaiserTweak uses for this?

Something is autodialing....but what

I have recently upgraded to Dutty's 1.8 ROM and have reinstalled all my usual applications but for some reason the phone keeps dialing up an internet connection. When I terminate the connection it starts again after a few seconds.
I have set my mail receive to manual and checked around the other apps I use (Funambol etc) but I cannot discover which application is requesting a network connection.
Has anyone got any ideas how to resolve? My battery life is shocking due to the connection always being on.
Cheers
Aidan

How to just use wifi and totally disable media net

Well i dont have a data plan and only want to use wi-fi when available. Should i delete the gprs settings or is there a program to disable it. I ask this because im afraid of it useing the internet and not wifi. Is there a way to do this. I tried and searched no results
thanks
Do the following to remove any data connections, other than wifi
Do the following..
Start > Settings > Connections > Connections > Advanced > Select Networks >
(CHOOSE YOUR CONNECTION FROM THE DROP DOWN LIST).
Choose the one you want. Example MEdia Net
(After Selecting)> Edit > Click and hold on the item next to radio button (example MEdia Net).. when the popup screen (similar to windows right click) comes up click on delete. Then do the following. >> General Tab > Click the button "Delete Settings".
Repeat the steps for other items listed on the drop down list...
NOTE - You cannot delete settings for My ISP & Work Network. Which is fine.
Hope that helps.
P.S - If you ever need the settings back again.. run the Connection Setup Wizard again

I made this video so you can see . its pretty simple if you want to use your wifi connection just enable wifi and fallow steps.
start>Settings>connections>advance>Select network> choose my work network on both> then connect to your network and serf the web

Or use Modaco Nodata, which allows you do enable/disable in 2 clicks.....
Bookmarked.
I do it every time I flash, but I always have to re-figure it out.
Thanks!
wow, search could have told you this in no time flat.
I used to have a regular poo poo samsung phone with that irritating buttonmin the middle to connect. Every time I accidentally pressed it, it would try to connect, and I would cancel immediately. Much to my dismay, I still received connection charges just for trying to connect. Fed up, I called ATT, told them my situation, and requested the ability for my ACCOUNT to use internet be blocked--since I didn't appreciate 6-10 bucks in connection charges (sinceI didn't have a plan). They removed it (not just from my phone no., but from all phones on my account) , and anytime I pressed the button, the connection failed. Upgraded over to a tilt, with the same sim card, any media NET connection fails, since any connection is disabled. Ofcourse, removing the bloatware really helps.
Use Modaco Nodata. I am a wifi only. Here @ work, and @ home. So, no data really needed.
I have NO data plan and its the 1st thing I install. It has NEVER allowed any data, and its a toggle. No other setup required.

Wifi does eat batteries though.

Nice of you to repeat someone.
Thanks everone for the replys, i tried getting logged into modaco but the site keeps telling me my username or passwords wrong even though they just sent me my passaword.
Would anyone that has this .cab file to disable the internet, upload it for me i would really appricate it
I believe the KasierTweak app has the option as well. Of course if you had just searched in the first place I'm sure you would have had your answer several hours ago.

ONLY ONE way to Disable Media Net (AT&T)
The ONLY way to disable Media Net from At&t is to call them and get a WIX block placed on your account. The downside to that is you lose the ability to send/receive picture messages; regular text messages are fine.
I've tried changing connection settings, band settings, etc...
I've tried turning off 3G.
I've tried NoData.
My Touch Pro 2, WM 6.5, keeps connecting to Media Net.... Until NOW, when I had the block placed on my phone account.
I know this is an old thread, but I've been doing intensive searching on the matter, and this page keeps popping up; so I'm posting to let anyone else who's looking know.
IF ANYONE OUT THERE COULD DEVELOP A PROGGIE TO FIX THIS, I'D BE MORE THAN WILLING TO DONATE FOR IT!! (And I'll bet many others would, too!)

Why does GPRS want to connect?

Hello,
on my Diamond, I have e-mail receiving set to "manually" and both weather downloading options unchecked. However, very often, the phone tries to connect to GPRS without asking me for permission. Few days ago, I was playing with my phone, what caused turning off NoData (I dunno why - I have neither turned the Internet profile to "enable" in its settings nor uninstalled NoData). A few moments later, I was VERY suprised to see that.. phone was connected to the GPRS for over 40 minutes! I thought that it'd make my bill like $50 higher. However, it raised my bill for only ~$0,5. I have no idea neither why did it connect nor what did it wanted to do with GPRS connection. Do you have such problems either? What's the matter? How can I fix this so my phone won't want to connect without my demand? Thanks in advance.
NoData should be enough, but I don't know why it reset to enabled if you didn't do this yourself? That said, all it does is toggle some registry settings so perhaps one of the other 'tweak' apps (have you got any installed?) reset the settings...?
Mathew
Yeah, I think that other tweaking apps could make it - that was my first thought. I have Diamond Tweak and Advanced Config installed and I was playing with them, so they could change the settings. My problem though is not to make Diamond unable to connect GPRS - because NoData does everything I want in that matter. I want to know why Diamond wants to connect, while forecast and e-mails checking are off. It'd be great to know that, because maybe then it'd be possible to be sure that (even without NoData) Diamond wouldn't connect to the Internet when we don't want it to do it.
With gprs it's all about the traffic.. the more you download, the more you pay.. I deleted the settings, so it can't connect, even when it wants to.. Only use wifi anyway..
U can enable NoData, but I think it's still possible to manually turn on the connection. NoData won't work then, unless you re-enable and softreset..
djind - oh man, I know how does GPRS work and what do I pay for..
I'll repeat once again, cause I think not everyone got this right. I want to know, WHY does Diamond want to connect to GPRS if it DOESN'T want to download forecast or e-mails. I'd love to have no situations with Diamond trying to connect - without NoData, without deleting settings. Just NO CONNECTING without my CLEAR DEMAND.
Then, please tell me what can make my Diamond want to connect.
You said u were playing around, so opening a page or checking and immediately unchecking weather download or any program using gprs would trigger the connection.. or mayme by accident pressed something..
It's done like that to increase your phone company's income
How about disabling the gprs auto-attachment option found in diamindtweak (or was it advanced config)
Just delete the setting if nothing work, and use wifi...
I actually have unlimited 3G service, so i don't really care if it stayed connected or not (and battery is not really a issue for me..)

That's not going to help in this instance. Disabling auto-attachment merely stops the phone resgistering itself as a GPRS-enabled device with the network until it actually requires a data connection to be established. Hence, as soon as the OP's 'rogue app' requests a connection it will get one.
Tigrowski, sorry for the confusion - I was specifically answering your question of how to stop the phone connecting without your demand. I am not aware of an app that could identify this rogue app, but perhaps if you find a packet sniffer that'd give you some clues (i.e. from where the traffic is going, ports etc and, if using cleartext ASCII the actual data being sent).
All said and done though, I think you'd be better of just relying on NoData to put the barrier up as even when you've identified the rogue app you might not be able to make it behave. Besides which there'll likely be another one round the corner wanting to connect when it feels like it! (that was one of the reasons behind why NoData was developed, particularly for roaming users given the significant financial impact of out-of-control network-enabled apps)
Mathew
P.S. It's not QuickGPS periodically downloading almanac data is it? (check the setting as this can be controlled, although it should only be doing so weekly anyway)

detecting programs initiating data connection

Hi,
I'm looking for a soft that would detect and identify which programs (softwares or other) initiate data connections on my kaiser.
I disabled all data-retrieving options on the different softs I have (weather,time,...), but it still connects without my wanting !
Anyone knows something that would do that ?
Thanks.
Good question and I too would be interested in the answer. Mine started doing this a few days ago and has since stopped again!
Activesync and MMS messaging
Both of these programs will switch on your data connection. I changed my mms settings to reject and changed my data connection to my work network to keep it from using data. That worked for me until I added unlimited data to my plan.
Spb Wireless Monitor does a great job at this. It isn't free, but I like it. I have it set as a Today Screen plugin to only show my MediaNet connection, but it can also show USB and wifi data usage. It will give you reports on what's using data, how much it's used, and when it was used. You can also set it to alert you before you go over your limit. It's at http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/wirelessmonitor/?en
Indeed, SPB wireless monitor is great.
I was looking exactly for the same sort of solution, since after reinstalling some apps I was having too large GPRS data loads.
