Flex Cable Warning - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

For a while my screen wouldnt update in landscape unless I tilted it a few times. Yesterday it finally stopped all together. No matter what its white screen.
I know its working because the software all works, just can't see anything. It was very easy to open up and when I saw the cable it was rubbed really far thru.
The replacement part is 30-90$ and can probably be prevented by putting a peice of tape where the metal rubs on the cable.
So to anyone that still needs their phone to work, you might wanna inspect it. I'm on at&t which means changing phones will force me into a 30$ plan on an already overly expensive plan. No choice but to fix the cable

Busted screen replaced, still not working

My dumb butt child was sucking on my phone a couple weeks ago and caused the LCD to short out or something. The phone still worked and if I used a bright light I could shine it onto the screen and barely make out what was on the screen. It was booting properly and I assume that if I could make out the menu options the phone would still function. I assumed that she shorted out the LCD so I ordered, received and replaced the LCD tonight. Apparently this was not the problem, sucks to be me. I do think there was a problem with the touch screen portion already which is now working properly again but still I can still not see the screen for crap. It's like the brightness setting is on 1 or something. If I use a flashlight I can make out the screen, use the stylus and operate the phone. When I was replacing the LCD I noticed that the two circuit boards to the north and south of the LCD seemed to have a bit of corrosion on some of the tiny chips. I used an alcohol swab to clean the area off but that didn't make a difference. I am utterly convinced that the motherboard is fine since it seems to be well protected in the case and not easily accessible to moisture. I see no signs of corrosion on the motherboard like I do the two circuit boards around the LCD area. I noticed that there are only two contacts on the LCD one of which is a cable that plugs into the south circuit board just underneath the front panel key pad. Just to the right of that cable connection is where I saw signs of corrosion so I wonder if that board is the problem.
The computer tech in me says that I could be swapping parts all night before I get this right. Since the LCD plugs into that board, that could be the problem, there is a ribbon cable that wraps around the back of the LCD which also seems to make contact with the LCD which could also be the problem, that ribbon cable plugs into the north circuit board, so that might be a problem and finally, the ribbon cable plugs into the main board so that too might end up being a problem.
Can anyone take a guess as to why I might be seeing such low contrast/brightness from the LCD? I have already adjusted the brightness setting in the menus. I think it was called the backlight setting, but I moved them to the far right with no change. Again, this is a near pitch black screen that is only visible when I shine a light onto the screen.
i haven't taken my tilt apart but as a computer tech repairing broken laptops etc i know your problem.
as for laptops, there is a little inverter card that powers the backlight. its connected to the display unit by 2 cables (same as with my digital camera, rip ) and this boards are really weak / vulnerable to moisture...
so most likely this board is damaged...
That sort of explains what I think is going on too. Take a look at this cable (apparently it's clickable and will grow slightly in size to give more detail):
Let me explain the cable. This fits directly behind the LCD. The LCD comes with one flat ribbon cable and it plugs into a port on the right side of this picture. On that right circuit board if you notice the top left portion of the board there is thin black slot which is where the LCD plugs into if I recall correctly. There is another cable that plugs in just to the right of that jack from where I forget actually, lol. Once that cable is flipped over the bottom keypad on the phone sits right on top of that board. In fact on the other side you can even see the contacts for the outside buttons. The buttons in question would be like the green phone and red phone, the "e" shortcut and pretty much all the silver external shortcut buttons. Getting back to the cable, you will notice that in the middle of the cable there is a rather wide connection and that is the one that plugs onto the motherboard.
When I was replacing the LCD I spotted two sources of corrosion on both boards. The more plausible culprit was about 1/8 of an inch away from where the LCD plugs into the right circuit board.
I sent HTC an email seeing if they would help to which they told me to send it in. I have no intentions of doing that. I already know how to disassemble and reassemble the phone at this point and I already have 35 dollars invested into a new LCD. I am not about to spend 250 bucks to have HTC take 3 weeks to replace that cable. After some searching last night though, I have no idea where to get the cable. It seems that all the normal parts places on the web want 90 bucks for this cable, but at the same time they want 120 for the LCD. Obviously prices have dropped some because I was able to get the LCD new from ebay for 35. I just need help finding a place that will sell me that cable at a reasonable price.
Now that you have looked at the cable and that board, do you think it's possible that the right board could be the back light inverter that you were mentioning? If that's truly the correct board then it would make since that there is something wrong with it since I saw signs of possible damage and the LCD does work, just not strong enough to be seen with the naked eye. Since these things tend to work much like laptops do, I am leaning towards the possibility that you totally know what your talking about and that it would make since that this is the faulty part.
One other thought, the backlight is the piece that increases the brightness of the LCD right and not just some sort of overhead flashlight or something, correct? The term backlight almost implies a different part but I am pretty sure it's the term used to describe the brightness of the LCD in this case. I just wanted to make sure we were on the same page here.
Any additional thoughts?
Thanks
okay, to be clear about this. i am not 100% sure, if the backlight on the kaiser works the same way as the one on my IBM Thinkpad T41.
tl;dr; i don't know if the kaiser actually has an inverter board.
as for the cable: if you found a bit corrosion on both boards, i'm pretty sure that the reason why your backlight doesn't work.
about the last part: yeah, with "backlight" i mean the unit sits behind digitizer and LCD and increases the brightness of the lcd so you are able to read everything on the screen. i don't mean an overhead flashlight
btw, i just found this one
http://www.cellulardr.com/50H10051-41M-XC.htm
selling the cable / boards or about 90$
<edit>
disregard that... i noticed that the boards allways come with that cable assembly.... and cost about 90$ everywhere... will keep an eye on that.
</edit>
I'm going through the same thing. Did you ever replace that piece? Please let me know because it sucks to not use this phone.

Nexus one dead, doesnt turn on, no charging LED, no nothing..

Let me begin by saying that I am an a** for being so careless with my phone(as you will know when you read the rest of this post).
Okay, so two days ago I spilled yoghurt(yeah!) into the USB port of my phone and I didn't take it very seriously and just used a needle to clean it a little. After this my phone worked fine, no problems whatsoever..it was charging fine and running fine.
Today I wanted to connect my phone to my computer, but when I did so, my Windows said that it didn't recognize the device and its probably malfunctioning and I should replace it(probably what I'll have to do now ).
I connected it in every port in my computer, used my dad's blackberry connector, factory reset, even tried eViL's Sense ROM(I had it in my SD card, so tried it).
Even after all the above the computer didn't recognize my phone, although it did charge when connected!
Okay so I thought I should try cleaning the port better, so I took some Isopropyl Alcohol(Second Biggest Mistake) and used a ear bud to clean the port. I connected again and no change, so I decided I'll try later and left my phone in the port.
When I came back 20 minutes later the alcohol had made its way under the right bottom part of the screen and the touch response was messed up. The trackball was constantly glowing red, I fixed the trackball by simply using trackball alert to test a few different colors.
Now I realized I had messed up with the alcohol and I needed to clean the screen somehow(BIGGEST MISTAKE).
I used a hairdryer to blow into the USB port, it dried up some of the alcohol but the screen looked pixelated and the touch response was still screwed.
So then I popped out the screw driver set and started tearing the nexus one down..and from here it was all downhill. I managed to get all the way to the screen, use a lint free cloth to clean the screen and put it all back but all this was of no use. My phone doesn't turn on anymore, all I get is a small vibration on pressing the power button. I connected it to the wall charger and I got the charging LED light and backlight in the touch sensitive button area(great!). I plugged it out and in again and poof the charging LED vanished, no more backlight, no nothing.
What I have tried:
Remove battery and insert
Press volume+up+power > I got a long vibration once with backlight working but never again after that
Let the phone lie for an hour
For those who are lazy to read the whole thread, here is the synopsis:
1) Yoghurt in USB port, left 2 days.
2) No USB mounting, USB charging working.(Tried wiping, reset and different ROM).
3)Cleaned with Isopropyl Alcohol, still no USB > led to distorted screen and touch sensitivity.
4) Used hairdryer, slight effect on alcohol.
5) Persistent Red Trackball light, no effect on restart.
6) Tore down the phone, used lint free cloth to clean the alcohol.
7) Phone doesn't start, only vibrates on pressing power.
8) At first attempt, the backlight for the touch sensitive buttons worked and so did the charging LED, didn't show the light after uplugging.
Now I am lost on what I should do, the phone never had warranty as I am from India and I bought it online. Any suggestions/ideas on what the problem might be?
EDIT:
Just found out that my phone is actually working, but the display isn't. My mom just called me on that number and I somehow managed to pick the phone up and talk with her..any ideas people?
I would have called BS on this story until you used the phrase "my mom".
Anyways, I can't stand people who destroy their phone and then think they should warranty it. Warranties don't work that way. It's dishonest to try and use it for your own mistakes. Your yogurt spill, attempt at cleaning, and disassembling, led to your phone being broken. Purchase a new one and don't do the same thing.
You probably either damaged the screen, damaged the ribbon cable that goes to the screen, or simply didnt connect it right. id take it apart, wiggle around all the connections and clean around them with very diluted alcohol, and wait for it to dry for at least a couple of hours. clean around the port too. Im not sure whats going on with the charge indicator led, or where the connection comes from. Hopefully the phones ability to charge isnt broken, and you left something not connected. Try cleaning and connecting things again, but lettings things dry for a long time first.

I never said I was going to warranty it did I? I wanted to get the fact that I did not have a warranty out so I don't get people telling me that I shouldn't have torn my phone down and instead send it to warranty. How was I supposed to know that the alcohol would make its way under the screen? I specifically used Isopropyl Alcohol because it evaporates fast and it meant for cleaning.
I don't need any bashing from anyone who cant stand what I did, I only wanted suggestions on how I would go about fixing the phone if at all possible.
@di2356
I suppose thats the only option I have left, and I guess you missed the edited part of my post.
The phone is actually working now, I am getting phone calls and my notification LED light is also blinking. Only the screen is pitch dark, and as far as I know it doesn't respond to touch. The LED charging light is also working, its only the effing screen
Okay, just tried completely tearing the phone down and cleaning all the contacts. No use, the phone still starts up but is completely blank..maybe the alcohol damaged the AMOLED screen in someway?
I am going to try and contact HTC and see how much repairing this will cost..its probably going to cost me 1/3rd the phones price for everything including the shipping
you said your screen started looking pixelated when you used the hairdryer on it.
that was probably a big mistake and possibly broke your amoled screen.
in any event you really did a lot of things wrong there. it was probably salvageable after the yogurt incident.
for future phones this is what you want to do first thing when any liquid gets on any electronic device. take the battery out right away. if its water or mostly water based liquid then stick it in a bag of rice or other desiccant that will draw the moisture out of it for at least a few days if not a week depending on how wet it got.
for something like yogert in the USB port i would have pulled the battery and cleaned it out of the port with paper towls and toothpicks or similar non conductive material as there can be a residual charge in the device right after the battery is removed or let it sit batteryless for 20 min to make sure all charges have left capacitors and then go at it with something metal carefully.
rubbing alcohol would have been ok to use but only in just enough amounts to get the job done, you obviously did not realize how much you had put in there if it got deeper into the phone before evaporating.
in any event get a new phone and let it be an expensive lesson learned on what not to do

My diamond fell and gives no image

Hi all ... I have my HTC Diamond for about a year. I love this phone, and I don't want another, but today, unfortunately he has a very strong fall. I always had very, very careful with it. But today was the time, the phone crashed, broke away from the back cover and battery, and I thought to myself, if not damaged by this fall, he would never break down. I put the battery, put the cover, turn it on, he vibrate on startup, but nothing else, the phone went blank, I was waiting, and then there gave the sound of that presentation of HTC, but no picture, no lights on the keys, nothing ... I'm really sad, I have no idea what it is. Already dismantled a bit cuz I thought it was some form of contact to the screen that is hung up, but no, it's all good inside. Does anyone know what could be?
Sorry for the bad english (google translator)
Please... can anyone help me?
could be flex connecting Display to motherboard damage. Send to HTC center to check
My diamond did the same thing, just open it up and connect the flat plastic display cable back into it's little plastic connector on the motherboard. Takes all of 15min to do and there is no way you can screw it up

Thx... but since then, I already repair it, not me, and the guy make me pay 20€ for that... and now my GPS doesn't work. By what I searched, may be it's the coaxial antenna that is not connect, or I heard that after deconnected, it can't be re-used.
But I don't know where to buy a new one...
Well at least try opening it up and seeing if anything is broken. The guy who fixed it probably disconnected it on purpose so you have to pay him more to fix it again
I have also gone through the same problem last month. As my small cousin came from abroad, he threw the phone like wrapper of the chocolate but I send the phone to the repairing center and it is well now.

[Q] Touch screen not working

My Droid's touch screen isn't working in the center vertically all the way down. I can still use the 'edges' of the screen. I need to use the middle of the screen for a few things (not transfering stuff over). Is there any way I can 'project' my Droids screen to my computer and click/touch in it to use it?
Thanks in advance for all help. It's appreciated
~mfungah
Edit: This is the original Motorola Droid.
I have the same problem on the right side of my milestone :S
I had the same problem, but from the back arrow upwards, specially when the phone got hot. As my phone was still on the warranty period, I flashed it back to stock and updated it to the official 2.2., took it to an Orange shop and got it back after almost a month: they basically changed the whole top part of the phone (I got a brand new screen )
Repair problem
I had a same failure. The touch panel was bad. I ordered one from eBay. It also came as well put it. It works well. Only so much wrong with me that for some reason the phone stacked in landscape mode, I can't change to portrait mode. What is wrong? I put together something wrong? I do not think so. Everything else goes. (or so it seems)
This has to do with the digitizer (the glass you touch over the top of the LCD you see) being defective or unsealed. This is due to environmental moisture finding its way into the phone and f**king with the electrictal signals sent by touching the screen. There is a 'phantom touch' issue that seems to happen before or during the vertical unresponsiveness, and that can usually be temporarily remedied by firmly pushing your screen downwards (your phone may restart) and taking a blowdryer to your phone until it's just hot enough to be uncomfortable to hold (and no longer take it into the bathroom while you shower). One way or another, you're going to have to replace your digitizer eventually.
Sent from my Droid using XDA App
I had the same problem months ago but it's now fixed.
STEPS:
1. Digitizer I bought from this guy:
http://cgi.ebay.ph/New-Touch-Screen-Digitizer-Motorola-Milestone-A853-/270780531 891?pt=UK_Replacement_Parts_Tools&hash=item3f0bc704b3#ht_2811wt_850
2. Dissasembly Videos (I advice you to watch them repeatedly before dissasembly):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6d7ETMfgq2s
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dE81IaQHEHc
3. Phillips screw driver( for dealing with hard screws around the screen): Because I don't want you to use the low quality screw driver supplied with the digitizer.
4. Double sided tape: I got mine from a hardware shop for only P19. Buy a the more expensive tape(P100+) but look for a very thin one! You will use the cheap weak tape to stick some internal parts and use the Hard tape to stick the external casing. EDIT: I just used the cheap one for everything and it's strong enough.
5. PATIENCE: Don't be in a hurry. I even paused from time to time to get a better idea about what to do next. Get the feel of being a perfectionist (that same additude when I applied a screen protector )
That's the guide from me who haven't dissasembled a phone in my entire life but my milestone. So if something bad and technical that happens along the way then my knowledge can't help.. sorry.
Good luck bro!!

Problem after screen replacement

I've got a replacement screen that my friend had in his house. Mine was broken (both the display and the digitizer, the latter was acting very weird). I did the replacement myself, and when I was finally done, I noticed something. The Touch Screen wasn't working (I could see the image but no input was recognized). I tried opening it and checking every single cable to see if there was anything wrong, but there was nothing looking broken or out of place. When I was going to test it, I noticed another very weird thing. It actually works if I keep the back of the phone off (not the back interchangable cover, I mean the back of the phone that is screwed in place). The problem is that this phone has a very annoying design that makes it so the Wi-Fi, Speakers, Camera and some other stuff don't function well with the back plate off, speacially the Wi-Fi.
I trully have no idea what is happening or what is causing the problem with the touch screen, and have no idea why the back plate makes the screen act funny. Can someone please help me figure this out?
Perhaps something in the digitizer's flex cable is shorting with the back panel. Try putting a layer of electrical tape between the flex cable and the back panel.
