Hi All,
I currently own an HTC magician. I want a new phone with everything the magician has plus GPS, WIFI, more RAM, and a keyboard. The only phone I found that comes close is the Kaiser, but I've heard such bad things about the video driver problem.
Video is not the biggest issue for me, but should I not buy the phone and support HTC who refuses to cooperate?
Do I have any other options with those specs?
Thanks,
Daniel
I have a Kaiser and I am very happy with it, because I can do so much with it. However if a bit of lag annoys you greatly it may not be for you.
Surur
NO. Wait some time whether the issue get resolved. Its not only the video - the whole phone is slow. You can not browse, rotating you screen. If i make a call with skype, the phone is really very slow and if i slide the keyboard and the screen orientation switches it can take up to minute to be updated - with nothing in background and free mem - only skype running. And until it switches you cant hang up, change the volume...nothing.
To be honest, i regret buying the Kaiser. And if i see how fast a cheap HiPhone can be, omg!
I wonder how HTC can have this on their webpage: More powerful than anything you've seen before, the HTC TyTN II takes communications to the next level.
You have to be blind a live 5years back, for the slogan to be true...
I bought it mainly because of the 3g and wifi and wm6... but there are better solutions then this for 520 euro...
Beware!
wait for kaiser fix
If video is not heavily used, buy it now. I bought it recently and like it very mcuh. But higher performance is still demanded...

better device with 3g, wifi, and wm6? like what?
get the kaiser...it's no slower then any other wm6 device out there and although yes it would be nice if we could play more games, normal res video runs perfectly fine.

This may all be true if you're still using the stock ROM. There are some really smokin' cooked ROMs out there that really speed things up and make the Kaiser a truly enjoyable device.
One other thing, show me a PC that doesn't slow down once in awhile. That's what defrag is for.

So you equate flashing a cooked ROM with clicking the "Defrag" button? One is a feature built into the operating system, the other can void your warranty and potentially brick your device. They're nowhere near the same thing.
I'm telling everybody I know to avoid HTC like the plague. Not so much directly because of the video issues, but because of their lack of accountability. They deliberately released a crippled device in hopes that nobody would notice, and are now working on some half-assed "fix" only because of the publicity that was generated by the XDA community.
Get one. I was in the same boat hesitating about the drivers. I am glad i made my decision. I upgraded from a 8525. Glad i did i have everything i need in one device. GPS Wifi, processing power. Im not sure what the full potential of this chip is supposed to be but its fast. I actually got mine refurbished from att about a month ago. After using it i ended up buying another one today for my wife and paying full price. Im not disatisfied. Definatly waht i would expect out of a 400 dollar phone.
Like most answers, it lives in the question.
"Because of Video Problems". Do you need or want to view videos not converted to 320x240 resolution? If you do need or want that that from your new expensive mobile device, then pass. ---- NO KAISER FOR YOU!
If you want a snappy interface and quick file browsing experience, then wait for the HTC "fixes". But still forget lag-free video at source resolutions above 320x240. ---------- > Get a Kaiser, and hope you can fix it.
Do you want fancy graphical VGA games or anything 3D? Forget the Kaiser.
Do you want a Windows Mobile 6 device that has real GPS, WiFi, 3G, Edge, 2 cameras (one for video calls, one for decent pics), querty keyboard, and bluetooth? And are able to put up with the device doing NONE of those things particularly well, then ----> Get a Kaiser.
I have a Kaiser. I live through its quirks. Its a fun device depending on your definition of "fun".
Do I regret paying $850+ for my device even knowing I was an early adopter? Yes. The device advertised was not the device delivered.
Would I discourage others from buying it at a $200 USD price point? No.
But then again, its up to you and what you expect from your device.
With Schap's ROM (4.31) and Coreplayer 1.2 i needn't a fix for "video pb"
I don't play 3D game.
Do not listen to most of what the naysayers have to say here. I have an iMate K-Jam and now I have an HTC TyTN II. I have done many comparison tests between the two devices. The TyTN II wins HANDS DOWN!!!
Driver problems? What driver problems? I have yet to find any lag on any video except maybe a bit on the camcorder app, but that's not a big issue. I watch full feature movies on Coreplayer and I have used TCPMP and WM Player with wayyyyyyyy BETTER performance than on my K-Jam!!!
Don't even think about it, go right ahead and buy a TyTN II, you will not regret it. Problem is most people drag these devices through their backsides and then they complain about this and that. They replace roms, install and uninstall all sorts of crap and then they wonder why it's acting up!!!
I have had my TyTN II since the 15th January this year and I have not experienced any of the so-called problems mentioned by some in this forum. OK, the battery does get used up quicker, but then again it has so much packed in and you can get 3000 mAH batteries now!!!
This sub-forum (Kaiser) is more like the Cheese & Whine forum!!!

Hey is this a HTC deHey is this a HTC dealer Thread?
The TyTN isn’t a finished device. There are much more bugs and “features” which should be avoid.
1 Video – its really slow. I don’t mind games, I even don’t watch video , because I have other devices for this, but if I wan to scroll the internet page, that’s not the speed I have never seen before! Why takes it so long to switch between portrait and landscape?
And the video from the camera I also pretty slow.
2 Speed – I have used a Fujitsu siemens n560. It was MUCH faster even if it was older and has 64mb ram.
3 The keyboard – this was one of the features why I have chosen tytn. But why they do not think if the do anything. Omg where is the ctrl key? How can you copy and paste? I have always to use the pen for it. No they put rather a key for opening the explorer, which I have used twice so far. And why have I to use the fn key to write a comma? And do you like the style of the keys? Its not even possible to write comfortably the last row of keys if you bent the display? And why are the functions of the keys doubled? Its for disabled people or maybe if you bite off some finger bored from waiting? I would expect that I can configure every key not to have three key for OK two for enter…
And maybe try to write any non-English letter – no we are in the world where no others languages exist.
I tell you, they are not selling what they are telling – What you have been told is not what you get.
What is good – the speed of gps starting, If you use quick gps.
Have a look how fast a under $200 device can be! Put Hiphone in youtube and you will know how fast the screen should react and switch.
Its not only about the damn driver, the parts of the phone are not finished. Not if the producer tells you: It’s the best you can get...

which is why you should try a cooked rom. the internet scrolling thing u mention? its a bug in pie, there;s a fix for that......if you decide to stick to pie, cause lets face it, pie is a pile of **** anyways. try opera mini or mobile. oh and btw......i did get my tilt for under $200
as for the OPs question, there are tons of posts here about the performance of these devices (you might also want to look in the upgrading section to see the performance of cooked roms) and I'm not gonna dd anymore to it. At the end of the day, you are the one who has to make the decision, and you are the one who will be using this device, my advice to you is just choose wisely......i took the jump and got it even after hearing about the video issues, and i never regretted it.
Just get a Kaiser and wait till end of March when the drivers will be released.

If you buy this phone you'll be taking a risk. It may be a small risk depending on what you'll have to pay, but a risk nonetheless of not being satisfied. At least you will have made your choice in good conscience and aware of the situation. Truth is we shouldn't have to compare this device to much older ones and say it's better. It shouldn't warrant a comparison at all but since it does there is obviously a problem. There are those that will tell you their TyTN II is "SUPER ACCEPTABLE!" but that's hardly the point. I didn't buy this thing believing it would have acceptable performance. This device is supposed to kick ass and we believe it would if it used the complete architecture of the chip inside. I got mine for $700 and my plan here on out is to just grin and bear it. There isn't an alternative device available yet and HTC has us over the fence on this thing. The anticipated fix is not going to address our concern of enabling the second core of the chip we paid for. I can confirm for you my experiences with the TyTN II and keep in mind this is before I 'dragged it through my backside' by flashing the ROM. (By the way why in the world would it matter whether it's been flashed or how many times programs have been installed/uninstalled?)
- Video playback is fine if my source is 320 X 240. I have always re-encoded my video anyway in an effort to save space and optimize everything. For this reason I didn't know there was a video playback problem right away.
- The camera is almost unusable. I have turned on the on-screen fps display and in sunlight I get ~18fps, in ambient light make that ~4fps and if it's semi dark forget about it. This effects taking pictures and taking video. The video I shoot ends up looking like a blurry mess and any picture I take better be of a stationary subject or else I will usually miss the shot. Interestingly enough the device takes great photos though.
- Screen rotation is a sore subject. I want the thing to be fluid but instead I have to watch it redraw slowly and in seperate pieces.
- Scrolling - it isn't certain that scrolling problem is a result of the missing drivers. I have to say that scrolling isn't very good but there is a fix on this forum to make it more reasonable.
- GPS works great, I've never had an issue with it although it kills the battery fast. Especially fast when using Google maps or live search because then you have the active GPRS data session combined with the gps.
- Battery life - I have a 1600mAH bat and I have to charge it every day but then again I auto download podcasts and such so I am partially to blame. As I understand it the drivers would increase battery life.
That's about it from me. Sorry this post is so long, let me wrap it up. I don't think anyone can tell you to buy or not to buy. You'll just have to make a decision yourself. At least it will be an informed decision, unlike mine.

With all due respect to all you guys complaining about video drivers.. STFU! already.
No one complained until one geeky ass dude bought it up. I have no problems playing my movies on my device or streaming it via orb.com. I get no lag and for god sakes it's a mobile phone not a computer. It surpasses most devices to date. I have no complaint about this phone. This is like my 40th something phone that I've had being that I work for AT&T and they provide me with devices. When the update comes people will still be *****ing about the video drivers. What exactly are you guys trying to watch? Live video feeds from Mars!?
Seriously get the phone you will not be disappointed. For the record my device does not lag when I slide the screen, etc. I've installed Schaps 4.31 best looking ROM to date. Haven't found another ROM that made me want to change.
even with no video drivers, it's still the best branded phone in the US. theres nothing better. (yet)

Awesome! So it is the official AT&T position that we should all install cooked ROMs on our Tilts? Is that what you tell your customers? And it won't void the warranty? That's fantastic news.
Can you please post your store number and employee ID number so your statement can be confirmed with AT&T corporate? Thanks!
Hello : i bought the new Diamomd.
Its a complete desapoitment : Its slow , after on week start to lose ink in the front , the back already have scratches... I never drop the phone... its just the use in the pocket.
Its very hot in when the calls have more than five minutes , if gps is used it can be used to cook too !
btw - The batery is riculous....
I read in the foruns that this kind of problems afect all buyers , with the exception of losing ink in the front... , this is not a faulty unit , is a FAULTY PRODUCT !
Don't want to start a flame or contest your facts, but I beg to disagree.
After a week I'm still in love with it, and that's saying something
You love the design ? Ou the funcionality ?
I need a phone / pda to work , not a gadget.
The quality of the materials used in the casing for a gadeget with this price is BAD
What rom are you using ?
Bring yours back for warranty. Mine came out of the box fine. Not slow either in my opinion, even after booting several programms. And yes the battery will be drained quickly and will get hot the first few times you charge it. After that batterylife should get better and it shouldnt get hot anymore either.
I disagree as well, ive had my Diamond for about a week now...and ive had it in my pocket and mine hasnt scratched nor has the finish started to peel or come off.
As for the diamond itself...have you applied the tweaks in the sticky above??. Before i applied those tweaks i really thought it was terrible, the diamond that was but after i applied the tweaks...i fall more and more in love with the Diamond each day...sure it has a few problems still but thats due to WM...memory leakage amongst one and the poor battery capacity on such a device.
Other than those 2 issues i love the Diamond and couldnt be without it now.
i even dropped, twice! no scratches, no peeling. using a screen protection already changed the ROM, twice...better ROMs still to come
. shortly: another satisfied client of HTC!

If you did not want a gadget why did you bought this phone in the first place? if you want a business pda buy a HP or something. I used this phone for almost 2 and a half week now and with the latest ROM everything works perfect! I have it in my pocket all the time, every day.. no scratches at all! Ok it gets oh but not so hot you can't hold it anymore.. And the speed, well it may not be the fastest phone around, but did you ever try a Nokia? same price or more expensive, no VGA screen and Symbian! No I LOVE my Diamond..
Just my two cents (sponsored by HTC)

Only the main menu is faster but for each appllication , calling contacats, change settings , making photos, open files the phone is so slow comapred to my old dual touch ..
I hope a new rom will come out fast!

...its makes me laugh when someone posts a thread about how much they hate a phone or a particular product...i really dont see the point of doing such a thing.
I mean ive had plenty of issues with previous phones and products but i wont make a thread saying how much i dislike it. Of course ill say if the phone is good or not...if it isnt then id say..look i dont like it, i couldnt get on with it etc etc and leave it at that.
I'll be honest last weekend i got the phone and i wasnt that impressed with the phone...yes it looks lovely but the performance was an issue as well as the battery but after applying those tweaks...its been near enough perfect. Im not under the impression that it was going to be the end all and be all of all phones. I know for a fact that the SE Xperia X1 will have its own set of issues. But places like XDA give us end users the chance to rectify alot of these issues. Anyone who uses a WM device know about XDA...its their first stop for them if they have any issues. If it wasnt for this place then i wouldnt even consider a WM device let alone own one.

not useless! I was looking forward to the Diamond for months now because I really need a replacement for my current PDA + Cell Phone setup. And I thought that Windows Mobile 6.1 would be much much better then 2003 SE (as I have now on my Axim X50v).
But seeing how many people are not satisfied with their HTC Diamond and what's even worse, how many people have technical problems with it I decided not to order it - at least for now.
I don't need a phone which I have to charge every few hours, I thought my Axim was bad, but this phone sounds even worse. And I don't have the time to make use of all those tweaks - why can't they configure the phone properbly in the factory?
And by now I thought that those devices should have fast enough hardware to not make you wait for your phone all the time.
I don't really want to start a discussion between the Iphone and the Diamond (I bet there have been enough around already) but the Iphone has more then double of standby / talk time, for a smartphone it's power is quite good and the applications don't take long to load or stutter. And most of all, it just works, out of the box. No need to use custom hacks or roms.
That's really dissapointing, I was looking forward to the Diamond so much...

I heard of this site for the first time today, and only by accident. And I have been using a WM 2003 device for mhm like 4 years now? Well it's not a phone but still...
But don't you think it's horrible that you even need a special website with tweaks and hacks to get your 'phone' working?
Next week I need to spend 10 hours surfing the net to find hints on how to make my refrigerator effiecent because the manufacturer wasn't able to do it himself? - Really I think this is a wrong trend.
If you dont like it, send it back, simple as pie.

Yes, this phone works - xda just makes it work better. Back in college I used to repair refrigerators and while your refrigerator is working, I would bet it is not working as good as it could be. The point is, there are a lot of people willing to make their phones better and we benefit from that here at xda.
I really hated to respond to this useless thread, why do you even post if your not here to help? Spend your time writing HTC instead.

Horrible lol....not in the slightest...its not only XDA that are around but you my-symbian for symbian phones...so why do you think its horrible that there are places like this around to help us end users get the best out of our devices??.
Fine there are technical problems with the Diamond...you can blame HTC or M$ for those problems but at least places like this ensure that the phones are running better than they were out of the box so to speak. Plus if it wasnt for these places then how would we know about certain tweaks...again other phones ie symbian phones have forums littered all over the place with people passing info around.
If you find this place so horrible then i question the need for you to be here.
The funniest thing is people expected this phone to be the best device EVER!!!!111!!!. Fine thats marketing for you but i dont buy into all the bull**** to be honest, its sad that people actually bought into all that marketing hype lol...i havent come across a phone in my many yrs of using mobile devices that is perfect especially ones that allow you to do so many things ie browse the net, check emails, take pics, use gps navigation....you get my drift.
Like i said earlier i took a good few weeks reading posts on here about the Diamond and its many problems but it didnt put me off...i bought the device and ive been more than happy with it...if and IF i couldnt get on with it then i would have sent it back for a refund within a few days. Thats the part i dont understand people slate the phone...they have had it a good few weeks...if you dont like it then sell it or send it back and leave us to exchange info between ourselves so we can make the Diamond a better experience for ourselves.

Ermmm seriously how many people can you say arent satisfied with the Diamond...off the top of my head i can only think of 4 or 5 maybe...so thats not many is it??.
Dont even get me started on the iphone, it doesnt even do the basic function of MMS FFS...which even a £20 phone will do quite easily. Plus the fact that it cant actually multi task...at least with the Diamond i can run a few programs at the same time...fine it isnt exactly the speediest device out there but in time it will only get better. With the iphone you have jailbreak it to out other apps on there...i cant be arsed to do that everytime i want to add something to it. Shame really because ill be honest i was really looking forward to the 3g iphone but not anymore and i know plenty of people who wont buy it now....it just doesnt bring anything new to the iphone other than gps, push email and 3g...massive failure in my books but of course you will have your apple freaks who will buy it because its an apple.
Galinha este pda e perfeito, lol.
This a perfect pda.
I dont own a Diamond yet..
It's going to be my first WM phone,
Have always been with Nokia Series60...
Got excited seeing the Diamond on net while searching for my next phone...
Came across XDA-Developers..
I been reading discussions & problems Diamond Owners are facing everyday..
See daily how Xda helps people solve these problems..
I'm happy..
Still feel there are many reasons to buy the diamond...
Confident that Xda will have solutions for my problems..
GOING TO BUY IT THE DAY IT's AVAILABLE IN INDIA!!!
AND I WONT REGRET BUYING IT....!!!!
Hi @all,
Is anybody thinking about porting the WM 6.1 ROM from HTC Touch HD to HTC Shift?
Maybe we can use the Touch Pro ROM to extend the key features on shift?
;-)
Is only a crazy brainstorm ;-)
Yeah, that would be so creazy
Actually, this is not an OS problem crippling the shift but a driver problem. Porting a diamond rom is easy to do, but doesn't bring anything new, and takes more rom space.

Yes, you are right. It is something to do with Drivers, otherwise liberation would not show complete WinMo.
Thanks
Ram
I successfully ported the SYS from a diamond rom. It gives some better interface, but what is really linking to the phone is the OEMdirvers section. This one cannot be imported from let's say a Kaiser, because the phone look for a sim door for example. So it means new drivers must be found and adapted for the phone, the Wifi and the Xvga screen.
For SD and BT, I think drivers are more or less standard, but as I said in another post, something like the embeded controler is locking it on the vista side.
This is many different sides to work on. I think once the embeded controler (or whatever it is) lock is removed, we will find BT and SD.

uiui ;-)
I see... hmm.. my idea was only Windows Mobile 6.1 from a Touch pro for test the integration on Windows Server 2008 and Exchange 2007 on a "big device"
crazy.. driver problems between SD, BT and WLAN. Maybe, the additional Hardware is build on second Hardware Device (for windows use)..
Don´t have any a hardware Layer circuit of the Shift?
I think the only way for porting a WM 6.1 with all features is - to enable the SD Card reader. Maybe (when it works) we can modify with some registry tweaks the SD Memory card as "Virtual ROM".
Sometimes i ask me, whynot I can swap out easily the PIM Database to SD on other HTC Devices. Our Users are Power Users, and the most of them kill the internal memory with they big powerpoint slides... ;-)
If this is what you need, I think I can cook something and post it. But it is not optimized for space.
Hi Thai,
thank you, but don´t make to much if we found a solution to enable the SD Card slot as additional (and standalone WM) drive we have all features open. I think that is the best way, but where are the experts for this?
A other Idea: Maybe the X7510 Advantage ROM is fits more to Shifts Hardware Specs?
maybe there are drivers for SD Card Slot?
Puhh..
B/Tooth, WiFi and SD access are the big gems...shame we're not there yet...
is not a shame
Remember that the Shift is very expensive and the people that can buy this almost not be delicious hackers or developers and the other: there are not so much devices on the market like standard products like Tytn that sells over mobile operators ;-)
sadly, as I see the shift at the Cebit I stopped my ordering. But what the hell driven me, as I order the shift last week again. (I start with a X7510, test it, and think.. poor... so on, sell it again and buy a shift)
Hmm.. I think, i have buyed all nice to have devices of HTC the last 6-7 years.. But now I think it is enough. Always I thinK: WoW, the next Smartphone or PDA must be better.. than I buy it, and see -- hmmm.. ahhh .. ohh.. hmm .. not really better, only a bit
hehe, I must become a special pricing for testing from HTC ;-)
the only really way for all other not working features is, to enable first the SD Card slot. All other comes from alone I think. If teh Shift Users can
porting some apps to SD Card, then it makes much mor fun to hack the Shift (if it possible

You just sounded like me. My first mobile from HTC brand was Blue Angle (Siemens SX66) and I still have it in the attic. Next were Four Wizards. I have give one to my brother, one to a friend and two are with me. One of them my son uses as a entertainment center in the car. He carries all his favorite music and emulated games always and I think for a 4 year old it is great. The fourth one is in the attic eating dust. I bought Audiovox 5600 and then Cingular 2125 for my wife and now she uses iPhone 3G. I still feel iPhone is for novice phone users, who just want to use fancy smartphone. No issues with it. My office phone runs on 8525 (hermes) and my personal runs on Tilt. I want to upgrade 8525 to something like a Personal Business Center, so bought shift with hope that we could have voice and SD enabled sometime.
I had BenQ P50 for soemtime and I felt that it was great until I saw Wizard and felt what I was missing and sold it. It was rugged machine, I cannot play around it. It is sealed. I become addicted to HTC phones. My next upgrade (8525 replacement would be Touch HD or Sony X1 or W1). I am not sure at this moment though. I also have Everun with broadband interface (Novatel pci express card). It is a very good piece. I want to retire it, once I get Shift fully functional, then I will drop the ide of buying into HTC for sometime at least and invest that money somewhere else.
Thanks
Ram
ui, that sounds like me We are far (away) brothers I start first with a Apple Newton, the most of all Palms, some psions, then later some Windows Mobile Handhelds and some PDA´s like Casio E Series.. Then i merged Casio E100 with Siemens S45 mobile phone end of 2000, and talk with some Siemens managers, and then they build the SX45 ;-) (to late) the first PPC with Mobile.. But this all is yesterday... later then HP IPAQ´s, and all branded or not branded nice to have models of HTC..
Puhh. ;-) I think, that "was" my own flat.. but other: so can many friendly hightech computer people

Exactly. . You will see old HP Jornada (very first Pocket PC), HP Handheld (LX320), iPAQ 3855, iPAQ 310 (GPS companion), iPAQ rx5915 (another GPS) and ASUS R2H, RAON VEGA, Samsung Q1 in addition to 4 to 5 computers at my home. I already have donated few old PCs. I have given my old ViewSonic V1100 to my nephew. He uses it as an entertainment system while traveling and carries his computer games and some cartoons.
Thanks

Anybody get a pre? I've seen one really great review of it and one kind of crummy review, very curious about getting this phone for my wife. Any recommendations on a good site (the XDA-Dev's for PalmPre)?? Thanks!!
not sure, but i dont believe HTC is manufacturing the pre
XDA = HTC phones.
again, not sure, if it is manufactured by HTC there would probably already be a section on the forum devoted to the pre.
I have heard a lot of good things about the phone.
only 2 cons so far: small keyboard, and programs lag a little.
other then that, Its a great looking phone, with new innovative GUI
I don't think I would be able to use the small keyboard. I can barely use the one on the Treo Pro, and the one on the Centro is too small for me... and I have relatively small hands!
Yeah, I know there won't be a section here as it is most definitely NOT an HTC device, hence my posting in off-topic. I was jut wondering if anyone knew what the best Palm forum is.
I've heard from another member of the forums here who has one that there are some hardware probs with the phone, dead pixels and bad overheating problems. First run Blackstones had similar issues so we'll see if this doesn't get straightened out in the next shipment. I'm not too worried about the small keyboard as my wife has doll hands and long nails anyway ;-)
Best bet is Precentral.net
Its not nearly as robust as XDA in regards to the manipulating and hacking of the device (possibly cause its just brand new) but its probably the biggest Pre / WebOS focused message board at the moment.
Yep i have red this is a crap
A piece of crap... is the way that many people has referred about the new PALM Pre.. why? i dont know, but I think its not powerfull than other device from PALM or HTC, but, does this palm have WinMo? maybe this feature can make it a little stronger.
I saw a few videos and i cant remember about it, cause it doesnt matters to me... Palm doesnt matter for who is a HTC user, you know...
BTW that litle qwerty seems to be for a kid... they are very happy cause the edge of the device is soft... what an amazing development!!!!
Well let us know if anyone has a little toy like that.
There should be a Pre section on this site...I dont see why now. There's 2 for the Palm Treo's:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=321
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=466
I might be getting one after some of the initial updates and bugs are worked out. 2 of my friends have one and they seem to like it so far comparted to their HTC TP.

That´s because that models were manufactured by HTC and Pre won´t so it won´t have it´s section on this forum

Makes sense...Thanks
I played around withh it for a bit an the keyboard is soft and hard, but maybe your wife's doll hands will be fine lol
The web browsing is great. And I like that it's slim. Other than that, I like my Pro. And I don't know of any other issues. though. Good luck!
I do have to say that the Pre UI is pretty sweet. I hope the Android team takes not and realizes that the built in apps can also look good. As noted a few posts back, the Pre does have a bit of lag when you launch new apps, but the card manager works great for switching once they are open.
I have to say that I love the hardware design of the thing. reminds me a lot of the HTC Touch Dual. I hope HTC brings back the Duals form factor in a new Android handset.
I played with one today at the Sprint store...
The keyboard is better than I expected, better than the Treo Pro, much better than the Centro...
There is a "slight" lag when opening applications, but it doesn't seem to be with all applications.
The card interface is really cool and works great!
I have a Pre, so I would know stuff:
The in-store Pre's are running demo software, so they will have more lag than the real model
There is no file explorer - This is a huge change from what were used to on Windows Mobile, lol, but you don't necessarily need it.
Multitasking is AMAZING! Nothing can match it. Using Turn-by-Turn GPS while streaming Pandora in the car is seamless and works just as you'd expect.
The app store, well, give it time!
EXCHANGE: If you're exchange server doesn't use a SSL connection, then you're screwed. Palm has to release an update before this will ever work. Trust me, there's no other solution.
Synergy - I wouldn't know how well this works because I can't connect my Exchange server, which pretty much defeats the purpose.
Overall, I'd say that for your wife, the Pre would be perfect. It's like an iPhone, but you can do wayy more. It's not Windows Mobile though, so don't expect a bunch of functionality. But this phone works perfectly for what you want it for. Everything just works the way you would expect, like how the phone wont lock the screen unless you put it in your pocket (brilliant!)
But watch this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9uNABNcCoY It's an Opera Mini vs Palm Pre browser comparison video. Opera Mini smokes the Pre, lol.
So I would say, get the Pre for your wife. Everything is soo seamless on the Pre and works so nicely. If you want to be an advanced user, then WinMo (or Android maybe) is for you.

I didn't know about the lock in the pocket things, that's really cool
My sever is SSL, so I'm fine there.
And, of course Opera Mini wins, the Pre is doing all the work itself...
HTC did make PALMpre...i remember when it was announce back in january...i have to say it is a very solid and good device and i love winmo phone, current xperia, touch pro, and HTC HD user. Palmpre WEBos impressed me i would pick one up when a gsm version release. I believe this device took whats good with winmo and iphone and combined it together very well and have lots of room to improve as well...one thing i notice about it that is bad is the battery...make sure you read up on the tweaks n so on so you can conserve battery but most people say it dies out very quickly i dunno if its the way they using it or not but i used a unit for 2 days and still have 50 percent battery...i say your wife would love this device and make a fan out of u

No they don't. Did they release an update?? Or is there a link to a thread that hacked it? Cuz last time I checked, they didn't update it and that was the only way.

Thanks! I'm gonna check for updates now! (Next time, it'd be nice if you described your post a little more, but thanks soo much!)
Exchange Works On Pre Without SSL Now!! Yay!
Hey, I've been thinking about buying a bluetooth mouse for my laptop now for a while, i've decided to probably get the Microsoft 5000 mouse since it has all the functions I need, the place i'm buying it from has the price 25% off for a week now and microsoft has this campaign where you get 100 swedish kronor back for a bought Microsoft product.. so that's yet another 25%, anyway, my question is;
Will that mouse work with Windows Mobile/ Xperia X1? I thought it would be cool trying a mouse out on Xperia, since i've heard it's easily done thru bluetooth.
Thanks in advance =)
It will work, but only with a 3rd party program, as far as I know.
I use Teksoft BlueInput. Make sure you read their forum, as some mouses are a bit hard to get working properly.
I have two low cost mouses, and no problem at all.
Alright, thank you =)
A bit pricey though...
Now only if there would be Wiimote support for WM...
Sorry for the late reply.
Regarding BlueInput, you can allways download the trial version. The only limitation is that you get 30 clcks on button mouse, and then it disconnects, you must re-connect to get 30 more clicks, and so on.
Alright, but i've already ordered it and recieved it today, been trying it out at my laptop and at Xperia with blueinput (i.. got ahold of a full copy... >_>)
It works alright except that it's a tad too small... and at the xperia the mouse flickers a bit too much and gets some ghosting, but that's alright since im mostly gonna use it for my laptop, but it'd be nice with a updated version of blueinput though with some fixes =)
Well, as the guy who had the original idea for that program, I'm lucky enough to get some inside info...
All I can say is that development continues.
Huh.. cool =D
With the flickering/ghosting issue gone it's gonna feel like a real proper mouse pointer and even worth the money, though it uses quite alot of CPU power which is the final thing stopping it from being 100% awesome, anyway a huge thanks to the Teksoft developers for making this possible!
Altough it does flicker and get ghost images (not only on Xperia X1, but all devices), I wonder what you mean by "get ahold of a full copy"... As far as I know, no un-official version works as good (or not so bad) as the legal licensed one, flicker-wise.
Yeah, well i wanted to try out the product before buying it so yeah..
I didn't know how limited or not the trial version was so i wanted the whole experience before making a decision.
