A salute to the HTC Touch Diamond! - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

I just wanted to mention this: The HTC Touch diamond is a little gem!
I have had the Diamond for about 2 years now. Usually I buy a different phone every year or sooner if HTC brings out a new phone.
But I cant seem to find anything better than the Diamond I have now. I have tried the Diamond 2 and found it too big... It had no real improvements over the Diamond 1 but is is a lot more bulky so I sold the Diamond 2 fast...
Than I thought the HD2 would be a great successor for my Diamond. I tried one and indeed the HD2 is a great device! But.... again it is just too big. It does not fit in my pocket and so I had to sell the HD2 and again stick with the good old Diamond.
Few days ago I saw the HD mini! I though this could be te phone I was waiting for!!! It is small, nice software and I love the design... And it is so small... comparable to the diamond!!! So I was excited about this nice phone...
Until I read the specs. It has a HVGA screen!!! That is half the resolution of my diamond!!! Why is this device called HD??? I couldn't believe it...
Well, this is just showing what a great little device this Diamond 1 actually is!!! Sure, the battery sucks and the 4GB internal memory is too small, but it is nice and small and the screen is great!!! I love it!!!
So now I put on Status ROM with winmob 6,5 and sence 2,5. And allthough it was never designed for such a memory hungry interface, my Diamond can cope with it! I love it!
And that is why I would like to salute the HTC Touch Diamond!!!

I to salute the diamond, love it. The best phone ever made bar the nexus one.

I love my diamond! It's sexy.

diamond 1 is the one
Lets face it - it is stylish - it is not curved, rounded - it's got edges. It's small and sleek.
It's slow, Touch is a pain, it goes black when you want to type in a number while you are on the phone, the recording microphone sucks, and the battery is ....
BUT - I lost mine last year and I looked at all the other phones etc out there - gave up and just bought another Diamond Touch 1.

My full aggreement. Unfortunately the actual hype goes to bigger and bigger screens which claim bigger phones. I was also thinking a lot of times about a new phone, Diamond 2, HD, HD2 ... but non of this new devices have really more features like my Dimaond. Instead of that, the Diamond is secy and very smart ... I think it will be my phone the next years ... and get changed if real new features are available ...

Diamonds are forever

I have owned my diamond for over a year now and also love it.
Very small, awsome screen res, it does every thing I could want.
I just installed SPB Mobile Shell 3.5 and it's even better, much faster and very smooth.
I used to have a problem where it used to run the battery down when it was in my pocket. I think it was turning on when I was sitting down, I installed Pocketshield Unlocker problem sorted.
This phone really kicks ass.

yupz, for me too,
this diamond is really a 'diamond' for me
i never regret of having it, this phone is very match for me,
full of customization, full of style, brilliant !

As my first wimo phone the TD has been a pleasure to have in nearly 2 years it has retrained and really opened my eyes to a phone that can do almost anything.
Alas it is about to be retired to the great desk drawer in the sky and replaced by my HD2 for every day use. It will be sad coz I am quite attached to it but my eyes can no longer read the screen properly.

The only problem I have with this awesome phone is that it's too easy to get smudge and finger-marks on it, and I have to rub it with some good cloth all the time.
Its just tooo shiny to have finger-marks...

My friend! THANK YOU for mentioning SPB Mobile shell 3.5! From the way you talked about it, it sounded like it was an AMAZING program, so I decided to look at some demos on YouTube. I then got the software and installed it....OH MY! The look and function of "carousel view" with G sensor turned ON almost made me fall of out my chair! This program improves the stylish look of the phone by ten times! WOW!

Diamond to Blackstone (Touch HD)...any takers??

Well the release of the Touch HD is imminent for the first week of November....is there anyone out there thinking of making the transition??
I love my Diamond, but the attraction of bigger battery, bigger screen, micro SD card, etc makes this device pretty attractive...especially since all else is like for like
Not sure what I'm talking about, then check here....(language not english...but you get it )

Nice quick visual comparison to both iphone and Diamond Pro.....
Looking forward to comments........

Love the diamond, but definitely moving to the Touch HD!
OK, just got a nice comparison video to the Diamond
hmmmm very sexy now as not much bigger dimensionally, but what a nice screen and appears quite "quick" when operating...
http://www.mobiletechaddicts.com/2008/10/14/htc-touch-hd-video-eye-candy/
Looks sexy, but i feel like they did not adapt a single byte of TouchFlo to the bigger screen capacity.
Check the home screem for instance, still just the Call history and tzhe calendar there PLUS some extra black space below... Thats ridicilous.
But I hope someone can extract that "stock" app :O:O wowooo
As long as there is no US 3G on it, i won't be getting it. I will probably get the Touch Pro when it's released on at&t. Also, the spec is all the same except a slightly bigger ram, and screen, so i'm probably not gonna waste my money on it, if i didnt get the touch pro and wait for the next update.
na i'll stick to the diamond till winmob7 devices are are comming.
also i think the advantage of the bigger akku will be reduced to the larger screen.

Agreed... and to be honest, the HD looks like a brick to me... personal opinion before I start another debate!
The Diamond is sleek and stylish...the HD looks like an iphone almost in its dimensional view and to be honest, looks bigger / thicker
In my opinion, the diamond is the perfect size/weight and thickness a phone should have. Bear in mind, I work in phone repairs so I see hundreds of models every week, some in prototype versions too and so far, the diamond is one of the most advanced yet non-intrusive in my pocket phone.
As I say, personal opinion.
You cant help to want the HD because it is an awesome device! I think we all agree on that. Specs are just perfect. If I ever had a chance I would get one (but keeping my Diamond)
But....
Diamonds have been noted by the sleeknessss and nice looks.
Yet there is no sacrifice in features. Diamond users are pretty well rounded easily above most other phones features plus the perfect size.
Greetings to all.
I played a little with a touch HD.... let be clear : the design, screen are great !!!!! I don't know about the battery life.. bugs of the TF3D and others.... but the look and feel are great !!! I Love this phone !

I have to agree to the great looks and specs of the device.
I have Diamond and looking at Touch HD I noticed 2 things:
1. It is big, big, bigger than SE P1i I have (I got Diamond as I wanted something smaller than P1 after a year of having it)
2. The hardware buttons are so near the bottom that it will be hard to use them at all. 20hand operation is inevitable, which makes it much more difficult to use in the street.

who will be upgrading to Diamond2?

Diamond2 is coming out around 10th april so wondering who will be upgrading or buying it?
is it worth getting the 2nd gen diamond?
i am stuck in a 18mth contract, so can't upgrade now untill apr 2010

What I will be eventually doing is switching over regardless of contracts. I will going to Florida in the summer and picking one up there. When I return, I will just simply selling my old Diamond. This will all happen by August of this year. I never wait for contracts to expire. That would make me go crazy having a phone for 2 or 3 years straight. This is my 4th phone in the last 6 months....lol
Phones I had in the last 6mths:
1) HP 6955
2) Cruise
3) Trinity
4) Diamond
i think i will be getting the touch pro 2 instead of the diamond 2
Touch Pro 2 here too... played with the Diamond 2 at MWC, I don't like it's look and feel.
Touch Pro 2 is the poison I choose this time.
Will keep my Beloved Diamond 1 for when I need Sleeeknesssss.
Greetz to all.
lucky you... wish i had the chance to visit the mwc
i dont like the look of the diamond 2 it feel cheap
and the pro 2 is very biig its even bigger than TyTN II its better if they name it TyTN III
i will wait for a new phone from htc (diamond 3)
Don't like the Diamond 2
Diamond 2 doesn't look as nice as my original diamond. Touch Pro 2 looks better than the diamond 2, but I'm not liking it either. I might just totally skip on the latest HTC phones and try out the Palm Pre 'till HTC comes up with something else.
Didn't HTC hire a designer or something for their new devices??
I think the oncoming HTC devices are ugly... I really liked the touch phones, they were the first phones that just looked good (except the cruise) and especially the diamand/pro
I wish i never got that touch dual i have now im stuck with it until december;(
But i guess it'll be the iphone for then, I already have a decent winmo phone

Chainfire, can you elaborate a little on what you didn't like about the Diamond 2's look and feel? Is it bricky, cheap, squarish? I have a D1 and am considering the 'upgrade'. Thanks.
well, as i compared the dimensions of the new diamond2 to the old it seems it got a bit larger. it now has the size of the iphone, which in my opinion is too large.
i really like the size of the diamond1, it is a phone-size all-in wonder, and not a tablet-pc with a phone function.
the only real advantage i see is the bigger screen for better working but this is also the reason for the bigger dimensions...
the rest of the new features?
better camera? well get a digicam if you want good pictures, 5mp but no flashlight, forget good pics at evening or at indoor places with bad light...
the other updates: memory,sd slot and better battery, well nice but its no world-wonder...
and the diamond pro 2? brick with phone function? come on...
i will stay with my diamond1 and keep waiting.
so my opionion is: size DOES matter
everyone have a nice day!
i like the no2 think i mgit go there if three get there act together and get a stylish phone made by HTC rather than the current junk
but like most ive got 12 months left on the contract so lets hope the 3 is out and ready and stable by then

You can immediately see it is not as small or as cute as the original Diamond ( <3 !! )
It feels a bit 'stretched' in your hand when you are playing with it, don't have a better word to say it.
But the absolute worst part is the 'bottom of the front' as you can see in the picture. They gray/silvery part looks incredibly cheap/ugly IRL, and its just a waste of space with no function (they should have just made the thing a centimeter shorter).
Furthermore, between the small buttons above the silvery part and the touchscreen soft-buttons is a so called zoom-slider. It's hard to see in the picture on that page, but again this is a waste of space - and it looks really awkward too. While I imagine it could be handy while web-browsing (if it actually works, it didn't do anything on the demo models I played with), at least for me that isn't that important and I would have much preferred an on-screen zoom slider in the browser instead. Again, they could have made the thing another centimeter shorter.
It's just one hell of a butt-ugly phone (well ok it isn't as ugly as say, the G1, but it's nowhere near as sleek as the original Diamond and Touch Pro) and wastes space all over the place. It doesn't feel 'right' in your hand either.
Hope that explains it a bit.
Note that I just noticed the Rhodium has this frecking zoom slider as well... bah!
the only characteristic worth mentioning in case you make the transition is the card slot... But really! Features like the enlarged screen (800x480), a wee better camera and a flashy new metallic design won't make me change my diamond... I mean, they aren't features which make a big diff... let alone define a TRUE SEQUEL.
+ they ditched the D-pad and replaced it with a silly horizontal zoom panel... Why!?!?! it pretty much looks like a DOWNGRADE to me.
No thx!
Not me, that's for sure!
I like my Diamond, despite its poor speed and short battery life... but I'm hoping that something else good comes out in the 9 months or so that are left on my 18 month contract!
My preference would be another WinMo phone but faster, better battery, TV out and possibly even proper headphone jack. Doesn't have to be HTC because HTC software is so poor.

I only played with the Diamond2 a little bit today and yesterday but the one thing I noticed is that performance did seem to be noticeably improved. As I whipped around TF3D it seemed quite a bit snappier than my Diamond. Some of the hardware changes do make you wonder but the TF3D software seems significantly better (that being said - I did get WM to freeze rather easily when playing with the onscreen keyboard - oops!) I didn't think the phone was butt ugly but, in all fairness, I was drooling a little.
Just like most people, the HTC people said that the Pro2 seems to be the one exciting people more but while the features are cool it is kind of a brick IMHO. Of course, I also looked at the P6500 and that made the Pro2 look not *quite* so big!
certainly not me, the device as it is is pretty close to perfect in terms of size/weight.
with the diamond2 getting bigger and heavier, it's a big turnoff to me.
i had a choice of buying a north american diamond but did not as it's thicker and heavier.

Thanks for the insight. I'm really on the fence about 'upgrading'. I'm intrigued by the widescreen for maps/pictures/videos and the 5MP camera has also sparked my attention. The cam on the current Diamond is very good IMO and so I'm just figuring it will get even better on the D2. I use my phone a lot for pictures. I have the NAM version of the D1 so the D2 will actually be the same weight and a little thinner. But I do know what you mean about it being 'stretched'. I had an Imate 8502 and it was a narrow phone that was long. It felt very stretched in hand so that's going to be a factor for me. Loosing the dpad (even if the D1's is crappy) is another big downer.
I've actually been toying with buying a Samsung Omnia instead. $200 cheaper, same camera specs but with a flash, widescreen (although not VGA) and a mouse pointer to 'replace' the dpad. Who knows...
My provider gave me a Samsung Omnia for free and after using a widescreen device (yes, I know, WQVGA, not WVGA), the screen on the Diamond seems too small to use. I will personally be going with the Touch Pro2, not the Diamond2. This is mainly because of the bigger screen size as well as the keyboard, not to mention the decent speaker on it and flashlight.

Upgrade from Kaiser to what?

Hi,
My contract is up so I now have the chance to upgrade my phone (I am also probably goig to move to Vodafone), but am not sure what to get.
The main things I like about the Kaiser are:
Email - although would love to be able to active sync with more than one account, but I guess that is a windows thing.
GPS - I use Google Maps and Memory Map a lot
Keyboard - it's nice to have a half decent keyboard to use. I prefer the Kaiser layout to one of the balckberry ones.
WiFi - although if I can get a decent 3G deal it would be less of an issue
I would like to have something with a better camera.
I don't actually mind going a little bigger if it provides a bigger screen - I used to have a universal so am used to a slightly bigger phone. I use it a lot in the car for satnav so a bigger screen helps here.
It would also be handy if I had a phone that would run a decent VoIP package over 3G when I am away from work so that I can pickup office calls.
So what would you suggest as an upgrade over the Kaiser?
I recently asked a similiar question.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=512979
I cannot find a phone from at&t that I like as much or more than the tilt. So I am just going to wait and see what comes out. I too would like a better camera and gps is a must. I thought of the iphone but now that at&t has killed access to the slingbox and the iphone doesnt allow tethering, I am staying away from it.
Let me know if you find anything.
Jim
Looking at the HTC website I quite like the HTC Touch Pro 2, but it doesn't seem to be out yet.
As a TP user I am very disappointed in its descendant. It is way too big and has lost the straight lines that made the TP/Diamond/Diamond2 beautiful. It looks a bit like a soap
Having had a Universal beforehand I don't think that the size should matter to me too much. Moving from the Kaiser the bigger screen will and a better keyboard would be a bonus.
Hi there...
"Offically" the Fuze is supposed to be the replacement for the Tilt.. But I personally am not a fan of it... The next one I want to get is the Touch Pro2 .. I saw someone else posted about it, and it is out now.. The only problem is the price is high.. but it should come down... It has everything the tilt has, but newer & better.. Stylewise, it looks more like the tilt.. It has the rounded cordners and very simmilar shape.. It also has the tilting screen... I did not realize how much I used that feature until I had to do without it for a while... The keyboard is nice... 5 row... and from what I seen is just about perfect... higher res screen...
If I could afford it, I would have this one already

I agree. I had the Fuze and returned it. I am waiting for the Touch Pro2.
Try the Samsong Epix
I got a free replacement of my Tilt after only having it for 8 months. In that time I have had to swap it out !5! times and kept getting replacements that would work for only a month or so. I was offered any phone I wanted and I chose the Samsong Epix.
I seriously looked at the Fuse but I read too many complaints about it on this and many other forums.
These are the reasons I chose the Epix-
1. The Epix has ALL of the features that the Tilt has except the tilting keyboard. The screen is a bit smaller 320x320 -3/4 inch top to bottom but I am not missing that.
2. The Epix is the same overall size, half as thick and weighs 2oz less.
3. The Epix is WM 6.1 phone on the format of the Blackberies with a very usable keyboard at the bottom.
4. The Epix has a 1.8 amphour battery that will last three days using bluetooth, gps, and internet, and heavy phone calls.
5. The Epix has a Thumb Mouse that is just wonderful. I never have to use a stylus any more.
6. On the Epix I can easily adjust the volume of BT, speaker, ring and handset very loud as I don't hear well.
I am not here to bash the Tilt, I just got fed up with it crapping out every five to six weeks. My one year warranty will be up in a couple of months and AT&T told me that if the Tilt fails after that, I will have to pay full price for replacements.[no way in hell!!]

Have anyone regretted buying HTC Diamond 2?

Any reason?
Because I'm planning to get one, looking for some feedbacks and advices.
Is in dilemma between HTC diamond 2 and HTC touch pro 2
Nope. LOVE IT!
Hi!
I can only speak for my self, but I totally love the device. If I had to choose a different device, it would have been the TouchHD, with one of the new cooked ROMs that almost makes the HD into a "large" diamond2
I guest that some would like a hardware keyboard, but after installing FingerKeyboard 2.1 the need for a HW keyboard is totally vanished.
Regards,
PK
I did regret initially when i got the device as i was moving from iphone. The sensitivity was an issue. But now i totally adore it.. So many mods, themes and apps available for diamond 2. I am so used to the phone now

i had the same dilema.
There are some pros and cons, from my p.o.v., regarding TP2, and the first is price. Does it worth 100 e. (at least)? Only for kb, no. For the screen, yes, but then we have THD, wich is bigger! What remains? Super-extra feature: conference bla-bla... no thanks, i don't need that. Anything else? Oh, camera... 5 vs. 3 Mp., so worse. And no radio.
One more: now vs. "soon".
I choose NOW.
No regrets here
Hi there,
I also love it! There is only one thing I miss from my former Kaiser and that's the Scroll-Wheel for "one-hand" usage just operated by the thumb.
I hope to get the Zoom-Bar replaced for scrolling, though.
Regards,
JTGBDR
Me tooshort battery life. soft speakers.even tweaks etc dont improve that much
Really love the improvement from the Diamond I had before. Some outstanding apps. og programs
No regrets here. Love it to death. Will make babies with it.
TD2 is the best yet from HTC IMO
LUV IT!
I must say I have no regrets buying my Diamond 2,
But there are some minor ignorances that I encountered,
But I am sure either HTC will fix them, Or you are able to tweak them.
The not so good radio reception (in some countries with some providers) will need a new radio by HTC
The not rotating applications can be fixed by a minor tweak aswell.
One thing I seriously can't stand is the incompatibility with games )
Like Guitar Hero 3, it installs great, but doesn't start (Trial by Microsoft)
Although I think if the developers of the game would put in some effort, It would work in no time.
But that's just my opinion
I hope that you enjoy whichever phone you buy
- Jeutie
no regrets at all.
Would buy it again. and again and again :-D

LOL, same here
However, this device is most suitable for POWER USERS (meaning: you love tweaking and installing new stuff on your device). If you need a phone for calling, SMS, e-mails and a little browsing, the iPhone 3G beats the diamond2 due to it's amazingly sensitive screen and UI.
Touch Pro2 is for business users. You get a keyboard, hence it's gigantic.
No regret at all, for me it is the best WM device at the moment, and currently I prefer WM over other mobile OS (do not like symbian, WebOs not here yet, Android not ready imho (and should be installable on the TD2 anyway), and I can not stand Apple policies (much more closed than microsoft starting from an opensource OS? yuck!)
I just have compared TD2 against HD, TD1, TP1 and Omnia this WeekEnd (visited a tech supermarket that add all the phones on demo to play with), and no question, the TD2 win hands down: best form factor, design and screen compared to the others. Some people may have other preferences, but the for me the TD2 hit the sweet spot: small enough, with a screen big enough and the highest resolution (and no need to go further - I would never have though to have to say it, being a resolution freak, but WVGA for 3.2 inches really is enough).
The things I would fix if I had to design the TD3 (HTC, are u hiring? ;-) ) would be more physical inputs (side wheel, more buttons, trackball maybe), slightly larger screen by reducing the borders, battery with higher capacity if possible keeping the device the same size, led flash (more for flashlight than for pics LOL), and digital compass.
Ho yes, and a different, scratch-resistant grippy back, with the possibility to use integrated flip screen cover à la Samsung Touchwiz ( http://www.letsgomobile.org/en/review/0076/samsung-f480/page3/ ). This is an excellent idea imho, the right balance between thin device and good screen protection...
And a proc that can record and play [email protected] H264 video without using more juice that the MSM7200a ;-)
Possible imho with the current technology at a price not much higher than the TD2, but then HTC would kill its upgrade revenues...
Waiting for this perfect device, the TD2 is the best approximation right now ;-)

Is in dilemma between HTC diamond 2 and HTC touch pro 2

I love my Diamond2 - had it from the day it was released in the UK. Before, I had the S710 which was a great little device but was a bit too early, didn't have 3G. I went for the Diamond2 as I think I spend more time surfing, reading news etc. on it compared to typing. That said, because it's a much more usable device, I am finding myself typing more - especially as got internet email from work.
It would be perfect but I have the following little gripes:
I don't like the way you have to answer the phone by sliding the bar. I just can't get the hang of it and tend to end up cancelling the call.
I wish it had some form of flash - but the photos it does take when the light is good are excellent. The widescreen is an interesting mode
For some reason, it starts running really slowly after a while. For example, the rather cool animation effect when flipping through text messages becomes much slower. As does whizzing up and down the list of emails. I suspect this is a problem with Garmin XT as it does seem worse after using that program. Powering down and back on fixes it.
The battery takes a long time to charge when used in a cradle. The cradle has both USB power and data (I'm aware USB alone is slower charge). The device runs very hot during charging. When ActiveSync is running, it keeps the display/device running and I suspect it's discharging almost as fast as it's charging. Shame it can't run of pure mains power when plugged in and charge the battery separately.
There aren't enough cool apps to make it really complete with the iPhone! Where's the pouring beer and fishing game apps???
Cheers, Rob.
Some slight compatibility issues put aside (since I'm a total smartphone & ppc noob) I simply love this one!.
It does irritate me that some stuff really needs to be a special version (like coreplayer, which I've tried over and over again, but only the 1.2.5 buil 4506 would actualy install and run) But in the end, you only need one version anyway. Just hope it is the newest version....
It'll probably be fixe when new roms come out. Diamond 2 is quite a new piece on the edge...

No regrets at all. Absolutely love mine. I take mine on picnic lunches to the beach. Just me and the D2.
I've upgraded from Touch Diamond 1 and I have no regrets... Way better than TD1.
The only thing i miss is the metal frame and stylus off the Diamond 1

Moving from Touch HD to Xperia

I have a Touch HD now and I'm thinking about moving to an Xperia. I really like how the X1 looks but I haven't played around with it so I'm not familiar with the software. The things I really like about the Touch HD are the calendar/tasks access from the home screen, and the weather feature. Do you all think I'd like the X1, would it be a good phone to switch to? Or what about waiting for the X2, from what I've seen it looks basically the same.
Hmm. It seems like you like HTC's software (touchflo etc.) Therefore you will have to live with custom roms. I mean you almost find the same software for Xperia as you used for your HD. But...to be honest...you have to have your hands on it before you decide to switch..
They're pretty similar phones, so it'll be more of a step sideways, than a step forward. The X2 has some improvements, but nothing that would stop me from buying the X1 over it (except TV out, but no biggie). Everything you have on the HD can almost certainly be on the X1, so its really just the looks and keyboard.
As you know X1 looks awesome, but keyboard may disappoint, although its perfectly fine once your used to it.
Personally I don't think theres enough of a difference to switch.
Camera on SE is much better too....
How is the software on the X1, does it have the features I mentioned, is it easy to use, how do you all like it?
Also, the X1 is definitely thicker than the HD, do you think it feels too big in your pocket or is it fine?

Firstly, X1 seems like a small device to me.
Looks like it's kinda thick on paper, but finally - its REALLY COMPACT.
I'm always surprised it almost seems like a normal phone in the pocket and I love this fact! It's like a bonus here....
As for your software questions: many many users here just installed HTC TF3D on their devices so the functionality would be the same in this case as HTC HD - you have the same thing on X1.
But if you want to use SonyEricsson solutions: their SE panels allow you
to customize WHAT is on screen in more ways than HTC, so you can display tasks events or calendar ones on the homescreen - or not. You can also set on the homescreen the applications icons or attribute any application to one of the two hardkeys. So absolutely plenty of options here.
As for weather - it's better on HTC but SE also gives you selected city/cities weather and current temp. displayed on homescreen.
For any detailed weather I use SPB Weather anyways....
Hope this is helpful!
One little thing that might be an irritant to an HD user is that the screen is recessed. Not a deal-breaker for me, but many users have expressed disappointment at this.
It makes using a software keyboard a bit hard when you want to hit q or p.
And well, after using the Xperia for quite some time, the recessed screen only irritates when hitting q or p, and that's only when I'm trying to type without visual aid, so the recessed screen is pretty much a non-issue, just a bitxh to clean.
Edit : TBH I feel like trying a Touch HD myself - HD2 is way too expensive (and huge) and N900 is not available in SG - and the reception of the Xperia is balls in my house. Hairy monkey balls preserved in 9000+ year old vinegar, what with it keep losing signal whenever I touch it. Outside - no issue. But I spend most of my time inside, so...

Thanks for all that info, it sounds like I'll like the SE interface and even if I don't I'd just be able to install TF3D anyway.

How big a deal is the recessed screen? Do you get used to it after a few days or is it constantly annoying you?

This is constantly annoying me, because i don't like the hardware keyboard (too small). It's a pain to use scroll bars or touch anything in the edges without the stylus.
But i suggest you to try it out somewhere.

I'm trying to find a local store that has it but haven't had any luck so far.

Not a problem for me at all. Even me hitting corners with fingers (X button and Start Menu) is fine, but depending on how you hold phone, and size of fingers or thumb it may be an issue. If you can, a few minutes in-hand should let you know if it will be an issue.
Again, not an issue for me, but give it a feel before you commit to an Xperia
Just before you sell your HD an Buy an X1 ,think about it...
I have an X1 Silver,9 Months old...now i have to send it back for Warranty issues
6 Cracks on the Cover (some are really annoying..)and a broken MIC told me....NEVER BUY ME AGAIN
And I Obey...
don´t sell your HD for an Xperia,it IS really a nice Phone,ok....but on comparison on the Problem you´ll get it is not worthy!
had a hd before my x1 now. With the stuff i do, the x1 is more usefull for me.
like a lots of and fast sms, msn.
good luck

What do you mean "6 cracks on the cover and a broken mic"? Like you dropped the phone and cracked it or what?
Cracks are usually a manufacturing defect, a well known one to the X1. It usually occurs in the battery compartment, and stylus holder. It doesn't do any real damage to the phone or affect use of it whatsoever, but its just a bit disappointing to have. Long thread about it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=447211
In fact, although SE will usually just repair the cracks under warranty, and my phone had a bit of crack, I didn't bother sending it in until another issue popped up. SE in Australia are pretty good btw, they sent a courier to pick the phone up, waiting on it to be sent back, its been 3 days.
Not sure about the broken mic though.
If your buying X1 used, its viable to try it out before you sell HD and if you don't like it, just sell it again.
