Hello! new to N1 forum, could any1 tell me if its even possible to connect via wifi to an ad hoc network. Im using CyanogenMod-5 rom which finds network but fails to connect. any help wld be great. sorry if this is the wrong place for my question.
regards bevan
Yes, you'll have to edit the (tiwlan.ini0) and (wpa_supplicant.conf). When I get to night...i'll try to post what you need to edit.
I just got my N1 today and will playing with it ...so it might be around 10-11 CST to night when I post back with the info.
Here a quick type up
going to system/etc/wifi and edit tiwlan.ini...do a seach for WiFiAdhoc and it should take to
WiFiAdhoc = 0 and change the 0 to 1...right ather WiFiAdhoc put
dot11DesiredSSID = CARPC what ever you want...as you can see I use (carpc) so I can connect to my carpc.
dot11DesiredBSSType = 0 this will stay 0 so it all should look like this
WiFiAdhoc = 1
dot11DesiredSSID = CARPC
dot11DesiredBSSType = 0
Now for wpa_supplicant.conf add this to very bottom
ssid="CARPC"
key_mgmt=NONE
mode=1
}
If you still need help just post back in here....
thanks

ur welcome!
You can try these...just change my setting to your and see if it works.
I try to insert a rar file. i'll try another way.
WEP works fine without making any changes. So if its just a quick temporary solution use that.
Thats what I used when in Japan for net on the N1, as the appartment only provided a LAN cable & I only had a netbook with me.
Hi, I changed my settings in wifi with yours using win rar (maybe that's not how to do it?) but didn't work sadly. when trying to flash told me file was bad. should I mod this file using some other programe? not sure. am a noob but willing to learn how this is done thanks again!

In order to obtain an IP address automatically. You need to be running a DHCP server which I doubt you are.
To get around this set a static IP address on the phone.

My phone can obtain network address ONLY if my laptop is connected to internet. (no problem).
There's no tiwlan.ini file in nexus one & there's no need to edit it. just have to edit wpa_supplicant.conf.
cheers

have kind of given up on the ad hoc thing for now but thanks for advice guys. Im on 3g mobile broadband and recently got a 3g router which fixed my problem. when I leave the house and require internet I just use 3g sim card works fine so no need for ad hoc at the moment.
AdHoc - unsuccesfully
Hello all.
I have the same problem with adhocing my N1 and wireless adapter D-Link DWA-150.
I used to check all the "solutions" of this problem (wpa_supplicant. conf, rooting, new SSID...) but it seems not usefull for me.((
To soloxp - there is not any tiwlan.ini in N1. At least in CyanogenMod 5.0.6.N1.
What can I do more to connect my wireless adapters?..
Has anyone figured this out? I am running CyanogenMod 5.0.7.1 and I do have the wpa_supplicant.conf file but I'm not sure what to put in it as far as editing it. I use WMWiFiRouter on a Windows Mobile phone because that phone is 3G and my Nexus One only gets EDGE. My iPhone and computers can connect up to my WM phone just fine I just can't get my N1 to connect to it.
So this is indeed the way for my question and possibly the solution..
I have been asking abt this,
I got N1, CM7 latest...
linksys compact g wireless USB adapter
after creating adhoc connection I connect my phone and it stuck at "obtaining IP address"
Now please tell me how can a place or make a change in N1 system files?
please help me with links and yeah Im a nooobbb
Bump up the post.....

I am a fresh owner of an unlocked HTC 8925 and I am having the hardest time connecting to the internet via WIFI. I connect to any hotspot just fine (atleast that's what the phone indicates to me) but when it is time to hit the internet with internet explorer it tells me that I can't go anywhere. (Yes, I chose that this connection connects to the internet)
I don't recall the exact error message but it was along the lines of that any websites I tried to go to was name unknown or something like that. I'll get the exact error message if needed.
Any help appreciated.
Thank you.

have you got the IEEE 802.11b/g etc set to "the internet"?
it may be obvious/you've already checked it, but i thought i'd ask, seeing as no one has commented yet...
I have the same problem!!! I try everything but nobody know how to fix it, click in this thread, i started it and i tried everything that they told me but with not result, maybe you haver better luck.

GOT IT! At least for myself (HTC Touch "Elf" w/ ShadoW 2.0 ROM).
Was going MAD over this.
Problem is that some programs (in my case the WMWiFi Router ICS software) changes the default network settings for WiFi.
Go to Settings-->WiFi -->Network Adapters Tab. Click on your main WiFi adapter (in my case "IEEE 802.11b/g Compatible Wi-Fi Adapter") and select "Use server assigned IP address".
If this doesn't help (i.e. already checked) I do apologize. Worked in my case.
Hope this helps!
Friends,
I've been proud of my TYTN II for the last thre months that I've owned it... until recently though.
Last week, my WiFi connection stopped getting activated/swichted on. Howsoever, I may try, it would not get activated, leave alone discover the network.
I tried re-flashing it, soft-resetting, hard-resetting, I mean practically everything I could, but to no avail.
Has anyone faced this problem before, and found a solution to the same. Would appreciate if you could share the same with me. I really do not want to take it for servicing, as I fear it would take me easily a week to get it back if I take it to the Workshop.
Thanks in advance,
Atul
Let me ask a couple of questions.
Can you turn wifi on or do you get an error?
If wifi turns on does it see any access points?
have you flashed your rom on your phone?
have you tried another access point for wifi?
do you have any wifi applications installed like wififofum?
Hi Chumley,
thanks for the prompt response...
I do not get any error, not even any message hen I try to activate the WiFi. Just that the rainbow circle keeps rotating (hour-glass equivalent of indows), and then shows the WiFi is still inactive (small x near the WiFi icon).
I tried re-flashig with the latest ROM available on the HTC website, but to no avail.
Trying another access point does not help either, neither would it, I guess, since its not a problem of signal strength, as much as it seems to be of the Wireless on the Kaiser not getting activated.
No 3rd party applications installed either, after the last re-flashing, still no luck.
Anything from the above, that rings a bell?
If it does it after a flash I would think you have a defective wireless adapater. Sorry.
Guess it should not be a problem as mine is still under warranty... just abt. 3 months old. But my only worry is, as I mentioned in the original post, the time it would tk. to get it fixed by the Service Centre, or if at all it is a correctible problem... I think time to ask for a favour from a friend... a standby mobile while I await mine back
If you let it go free and it comes back, then it's yours forever.
Hello, same problem here:
two days ago my wifi connection stopped suddenly and cannot activate it from the comm manager. When I click in the WIFI Icon, rainbow circle keeps rotating and PDA perfomance goes down.
any ideas :?
Hueznar,
I've already given mine for repair at Service Centre two days back, and am still awaiting it back.
Shall let you know how it goes once I get it back
WiFi would not activate: Motherboard concked off
My PDA motherboard conked off... and it wud take 3 weeks to get it back with a new motherboard !!

I'm not sure what is wrong with my Wifi...need help
I don't know why...really.
The comm manager stays on good, but when I try an access point it starts with the Connecting... then after a few seconds it stops and goes Unavailable.
My router works good with my bros and sis MAC books.
So I have no idea why.
Can anyone help?

So.. I tried what you said and didn't worked.
I think it has to be something set in the edit options...
Could you help me?
yeah ssid is the id for the wireless network
i'm not sure why it worked for me... should'nt have made a difference.
have you tried different wireless channels on the router?
increase the power output?
sorry man i don't really know enough about it but happy to try.. pm me if i can answer your question i will

Wifi access point problem
I had a problem where suddenly after months of use with my home wifi router, it suddenly would not connect with the router anymore. Would show that it was trying to connect, and then would suddenly not connect and try another router on the list.
I tried reseting and everything. Tried re-entering the password for my router as I thought that was the problem. finally the only fix i found to work was to actually delete the access point from the phone... then reset and then let it find it all over again from scratch. And miraculously that time it worked.
I know this is not exactly your problem, but hope it helps.

By changing it to channel 1 in my router, it kinda worked..
It says Available now. Nothing else... The connect option it still there button left.
That's my update.
just in case letting you know that I disabled all MEdia net and ISP GPRS so I won't get charged because I'm not paying for my onlince services or any mobile plan with internet.
My brother told me that all WIFI connects directly to internet and it won't matter if I don't have a plan for mobile.
Correct me here, if im wrong.
Thanks.

Hi ,
I have Donut 1.6 and Im trying to connect to my corporate network which uses WPA2 (AES) and requires Verisign vertificates, but the android is not detecting the settings properly and even when i manually configure it, its showing the certs as empty.
Bottom line, iPhone connects to the network in a flash. G1 never did. Any idea if its possible to do this with Donut or not yet ?
I dont know why Google is not trying to make corporate users happy ?
Any help or advice is appreciated !

Any advice on how to do this from within the phone itself ? (Mine is rooted and running AOSP 1.6)
For some stupid reason Android drivers dont install properly for me. I have tried tons of articles and fixes nothing worked. So I cant adb.
Also any idea where I could find the verisign.pfx ? where is it usually located ?
Thanks alot for any help.
Your company should be providing the certificates. You can try running cyanogen mod which has enhanced credentials storage. Maybe it will work on there. Also, i gave the instructions to push that file on the phone in the other thread.
Hi, well those certificates are usually sent automatically once a device is connected to the network. I dont place those certificates manually.
Also when using an iPhone it usually asks for username and password. In the case of Android its only asking for password. Which wont get me anywhere. I think android is still not ready to connect to certain corporate networks..... :S
I tried the push instructions throught another computer but it didnt find the certificates.
Thanks anyways for your help mate.....appreciate it !
No problem. However, when its asking you for a password, is it for Credentials Storage?
You need to enter a strong password there as thats where all the settings for connecting to the network will be.
it asks for the credentials password first then the wireless pass. but never a username ! :s
hm... thats weird
did you try using the Wifi helper app on the market? the free version may be able to help you out
ok.....the good news is Wifi helper finally managed to connect me to the network
The bad news is my network uses a proxy server.......so setting the android to use the proxy turns out to be another problem
Any advice on this is VERY much appreciated !.
Thanks again
been searching all over the internet and have tried a few methods but nothing seems to stick on the tab. im doing this because my mac address is something funky, 12:34:56... and i cant connect to my schools wifi. my IT department doesnt service "gadgets" so im on my own. ive tried the instructions here:

but they dont seem to stick. when i connect back to my wifi network (at home) it just goes back to the corrupt one. anyone have any experience with this?
i havent been able to connect in about 3 months so as you might imagine, im really getting frustrated with it. any help would be great.

Edit*
Temporary Fix:
1) Go to wireless & network settings
2) Disconnect and forget ALL previous SSID's that you connected to before
3) download a terminal emulator from the market
4) type the following, make sure you hit enter after every line
Code:
su
busybox ip link set eth0 address XX:XX:XX:XX:XX
Where XX:XX:XX:XX:XX is, make you have to put the MAC address you want there.
to confirm if it worked type:
Code:
busybox ip link show
it should show the new MAC address. Go connect to your network as normal.
NOTE:
If you go to the status option in the settings, you will see that the MAC Address DID NOT CHANGE. This is normal. It wont show the new MAC Address; at least it didnt for me.
One thing to keep in mind, sometimes you cant just put in an hexadecimal combination and expect it to work. It didnt work for me. So what I did is I connected to the school's network from my vibrant making sure I could surf the internet. then i disconnected and copied its MAC address to my tab. when i tried putting in my own custom MAC address, it didnt work. I could connect but packets wouldnt be sent.
Unfortunately when I reboot, my settings are not saved and I have to repeat the procedure. Simplest fix is to just download gscript lite from the market and put in the command I wrote above and whenever i restart my tab run the script quickly. If someone knows of a permanent fix, please let me know so I can update this.
feels good to finally be able to connect after 3 months.
I wrote a quick app that will do this - but i hardcoded the script for something else. I will modify it tomorrow so you can customize the script it runs and put it up here tomorrow or sunday if i get the time.
I would sincerely appreciate that!

"alphanumeric"?
More like "hexadecimal"
Valid charachters are 0123456789abcdef and nothing more, if you used something else that would explain why it didn't work.

Ok here is the boot script loader.
I didn't spend any time on the interface or layout for you:
Obviously requires root to run
you don't need to start script with "su"-everything runs as su
enter the script in the edit box, click test to test it, click save to save it. It will run whatever has last been saved every boot.
Do NOT move to SD card or it will not pick up the BOOT_COMPLETED intent
i haven't tested if it runs before the SD card is fully mounted: so don't get carried away with your scripts. I suppose I could add options to run only after SD card is mounted but... i probably don't have time
Since this runs as root, do stupid things in your script things at your own risk. I'm not responsible in anyway.
the output from testing or from the boot log is:
stdOut
..some stdOut text
stdErr
..some stdErr text
where stdOut text is the results of your commands (you can see testing with a simple script containing just "ls" without the quotes)
and stdErr is any errors that occurred while running the script (you can see testing with a simple script containing "aasdf" without the quotes
click the "Thanks" button if you use this and it works
i really appreciate this. unfortunately i wont be able to try it out till monday when im at school. ill update it then.
thanks a lot of the script loader. it seems to do its job. but it seems my situation is a bit more complex than i thought. see i can only change the MAC address if i delete all the previously connected SSID. if i remove the dchp.list will that remove/forget all the previous SSIDs? i would have to run a cmd to forget all the SSIDs prior to running the MAC address change cmd.
I typed busybox ip link set eth0 address XX:XX:XX:XX:XX
i am receiving " bad address"
Pls help me
I dont use wifi a lot, but i recently moved to a place that has bad signal, and so i wanted to connect to my router, when i turn it on it shows other routers but not mine. Which seemed odd to me. I reset the modem and router to see if that would help. But it still doesnt work.
I have the .29 baseband. The newest, i beleive, Would that pose a problem?
If so a radio link that is reliable would be grand!
check the wiki radios are different for everyone so you just have to go through and test them but PLEASE only use the ones on the HERO CDMA WIKI because if u flash a gsm radio by accedent that will garantee a bricked phone.
haha oh in know.. its happened before. a long time a go when i was more nooby.

I was under the impression the CDMA radio didn't have any affect on WiFi.
idk about if it effects it r not, but i tried 3 or 4 radios and all of the could not detect my router. So i guesss its another issue, ill have to ask and find out
Just an idea, probably a crazy one, but since you see other routers, make sure your router is actually broadcasting your network ID. (I have, at times in the past, turned this off unless I was connecting a new laptop or other device the first time, to keep it hidden from outsiders).

Why do you think it's a problem with your phone if you can see other routers?
Is your router brocasting on the only freqs. that an N router uses which afaik your b/g wireless device(hero) won't see.

Hmm..I've messed with a few router types (I work for a networking company, though I'm definitely no expert), what are you using (make model?) Have you connected other wireless devices (laptop, gaming console, etc) successfully?
Should be pretty easy to get into the web interface (though navigating the options can be confusing as hell) and see if it is:
1. broadcasting your net ID.
2. Running in N only mode (if it is an N router).

Yeah ive had it for a while actually, and ilive with 4 other people and we all can connect to 3, sometimes 4 laptops/desktops. And i beleive, i cant quiet remember, but i think ive connected to it before a long time ago. and i just looked and its a Netgear wirelsess N router
Okay, you should be able to log into it from one of your connected PCs via your browser, the address would either be http://192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1
username and password (IF they haven't been changed!) are probably admin/password
Once in there, you should be able to find wireless settings, first thing I would look for is (as was previously suggested by FdxRider) the mode (n only, n + g (and maybe b). If it is set to n only, change it to n + g, or n + g and b. Then see if you phone can see it. If that doesn't work, need to look for the SSID, AND see if you can find a setting that says something like broadcast SSID. You may have to hunt around a bit, but it should be in the wireless settings somewhere. If you change either of those, save the changes then have the phone scan and see if it shows up.
I'm not being too specific about where to find these things because web interfaces change a bit, and each brand has their own hiding places.
If you can't figure out the password to get in, you should be able to reset the router to factory defaults, should be one of those "poke something in here" holes on the router case itself in back...will change the SSID to NETGEAR and admin pass probably to "password"
You might want to update the routers firmware. With netgears you have to go to the website and dl the latest update and save it somewhere on your pc/laptop. Then on the left hand side of the routers page it will say update firwire. Click on that and its an option to browse to were you saved the firmware file to. When you find it just click it and let it do its thing. Then you will have to reset the router by pressing the black pin size button found on the back of the router. Then log back into the routers web page and check to make sure the firmware update took and matches the update you downloaded. Remember never let the router update itself always do it manually. Also never update the firmware while being on wireless always plug in via cat5/cat6. Also its a setting in the routers web page to save your current settings so after you update the firmware you wont have to resetup all of your settings. Just tell the router were to look for your setting file you saved and apply it.
