Questions moving from Cyanogen to Super D - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I haven't been able to find a guide of sorts for changing from Cyanogen 4.2.14.1 to a stable version of Super D. I know from searching that it requires the Danger SPL, which I do not have currently. If someone could point me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it Please don't flame me

Flash the radio in my sig. Then Haykuro's SPL in my sig.
The End.
Saw you already have the newest radio, just flash the spl then a rom if you are sure of the radio version.

radio and spl are most important and always make sure u do the radio first

Thanks for your replies! So, I assume I can flash both of these using Cyan's Recovery and 'apply any zip from sd card', etc or do I need to flash another recovery instead of cyan's. Do I have to wipe the device first or can I simply flash both of these followed by Super D? Also, I see in reading that some say to wipe my ext. I don't see that as an option in Cyan's Recovery. How would I go about that and if I do it, will I lose everything on my sd card? Right now I have a fat32, ext2, and linux-swap as my partitions.

The guide is in the Super D thread.

Ok, in reading...this is what I plan to do:
Download recovery-RA-dream-v1.5.2.img and rename to recovery.img
Download ota-radio-2_22_19_26I.zip
Download Danger SPL spl-signed.zip
Flash RA recovery, reboot
[Alt+W] Wipe
[Alt+2] Wipe SD:ext partition : Wipe the ext partition on your sdcard
Flash ota-radio-2_22_19_26I.zip
Flash spl-signed.zip
Flash Super D
1. Have I missed any steps?
2. If I Wipe SD ext partition, will I lose all the data on my SD Card??? Also, will it mean I have to repartition it?
Thanks!

Wiping ext will only delete the files on the ext partition, not the fat32. It also doesn't remove the partition, only the data.
You don't need to flash the radio again if the information in your sig is correct. (verify in about phone in settings)
I'm pretty sure you have to choose flash update.zip for the spl to flash properly. Remember, flashing the SPL deletes all the data from your phone so if you forget to boot into recovery after flashing it it will appear stuck at the G1 screen because there are no boot files yet.

Thanks evilkorn!! Ok. I just finished flashing the new RA Recovery and it went like butter. I reverified my radio and it's good to go. So, here are my final questions.
Before flashing the danger spl, do I have to wipe? Or can I skip it?
Based on your instructions, I will will rename the Danger SPL spl-signed.zip to "update.zip" and flash it from recovery.
Can I just remain in console at that point and flash Super D then do the final boot so I don't get stuck at the G1 screen?

G1 fails at flashing and reboots

hey, I had Mighty Max's Hero rom installed onto my phone running perfect and I was happy, until today. My phone is randomly rebooting for no reason what so ever. Started yesterday morning with just one reboot and didn't think much of it then when I woke up today it was going crazy and now its just frustrating. So in my frustration I backed up my phone and put a new rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=579674
Now when I flash it goes through everything and then says
Code:
E:Can't chown/mod /system/ (Too many open files)
E:Failure at line 22: set_perm_recursive 0 0 0755 0644
SYSTEM:
Can anyone help me out on this
Specs are in sig.
ok here is what you do, you gotta reformat and repartition your sd card, load a new NON HERO ROM on your sd card, and flash it. that SHOULD do the trick.
i know its a pain in the ass but i have had to do it a couple of times. may i suggest cyanogens rom? its really easy to flash, you just have to flash a .zip before you flash his rom. he has a WIKI. its super easy and pretty stable.
haha oh geeze I did that just before I installed Mighty Max >.<
well, i'll give it a whirl haha.
Thanks for the reply
Edit: It didn't work, I still get errors =/

Yes sir, I always do
Wipe Data/Factory
Wipe Ext
Repair Ext
Wipe Data/Factory
install rom
I don't understand why its doing this.
I noticed your using Amon Ra 1.2.3. I was having a problem with the ROM not staying on my phone until I went back to Cyanogen 1.4. Weird any time the phone was plugged in and I rebooted the ROM was gone. Try flashing and after flash unplugging, reboot and get Cyanogen back on there. Just a thought.

I wasn't able to flash any roms besides a few selected, i wasn't even able to flash Cyanogen's, that even shocked me. It always flashed no matter what.
I reflashed the Mighty Max after thinking that maybe me deleting everything would fix the rom, turns out it doesn't.
When my phone goes idle, it freezes up and restarts from a crash.
I guess its when I get a text, but not all the time though.

Are you wiping your Ext3 with Amon Ra Recovery 1.2.3? If so, go to recovery drop to console and hit enter, then mkefs2 -j /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 enter. Wait, let it do its thing. Then,
reboot recovery enter. Now flash and proceed to reflash your recovery back to Cyanogen 1.4. If this fails, you may want to go back to RC29. Sounds like alot of work but at least you'll have a functioning phone.

I tried typing the first command and it wouldn't work. Maybe you typo-ed it?
mkefs2?
Can I use this code to do the same?
# mount -o rw /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 /system/sd
# rm -rf /system/sd/*
# reboot recovery
./fastboot erase recovery
./fastboot flash recovery *name of whatever you named the Cyanogen recovery image*
./fastboot reboot

The reason I added "*name of whatever you named the Cyanogen recovery image*" is because I tried flashing Amon Ra's 1.2.3 the same way using the default name but Terminal said I couldn't flash, so I just named it "recoveryimage.img."

Hmm I did that as well
in console I put
Code:
cd C:\
fastboot flash recovery cm.img (cm.img is what i named the Cyanogen recovery)
fastboot reboot
It still gives me the same error when trying to install most roms, even in the CM rom.
REFLASH THE HAYKURO "DEATH/DANGER" spl!
it'll repartition (also wipe) your phone's internal phone memory if you haven't already done so,
it's usually the cause since some roms are too big and leave residual files
next stop to ensure a clean install is to just do a data/cache wipe from the recovery menu
now you wanna either wipe/format your ext partition or just repartition your entire sd card for the heck of it
then repair ext partition,
then wipe again
then flash flash flash

Is this the death / danger spl?
http://code.google.com/p/sapphire-port-dream/
if it is, I already have it =/
yeah that's the one, but DO IT AGAIN anyways
because it also cleans out the system.
Do I need to flash the radio again as well or just the SPL?
most times when trouble shooting these things, you'd want to repeat steps to ensure that what you're doing and what you have done at the moment aren't causing your problems, only by redo-ing these steps can you validate what's a problem and what's not, and in the process you'll most likely find a solution!
so try repartitioning, wiping, and reflashing the radio and spl, and finally reflashing your rom
just reflash both
radio, then spl
you wanna make sure everything's in good order.
sometimes if all these things don't work, it might just be your sd card has crapped out on you
and its time to get a new one, sd cards and the flash memory on them are limited to however many read and write cycles and if you've been using linux swap on them, then you're using your sd card as RAM pretty much.

I haven't been using my SD card as ext for long though.
I did what you said and it still says the same error.
I even went ahead and installed a new recovery through fastboot to Cyanogen.
EDIT:
I brought the phone back to RC33 and rerooted then upgraded recovery CM 1.3 and Haykuro Death SPL and Latest Radio and I still get the error code.....
I'm going to break this phone >:-(
SenseHero writes but doesn't boot, any reason why?

Full G1/Dream Update, Any help please....

Hi to all,
I need to completely Reflash my G1 (radio, spl, CMrom), my idea is to follow this step:
1) New SD formatted with 96Mb swp, 512 Ext4 for data, fat32
2) Put G1-radio-2_22_23_02.zip, spl-signed.zip (sapphire port), dream_devphone_userdebug-ota-14721.zip, Latest CCMROM.zip onto SD.
3) Reboot Recovery, Wipe all (not really necessary if i change the sd....)
4) flash radio - reboot into recovery
5) flash spl - reboot into recovery
6) flash donut1.6 - no reboot - flash latest CMRom
7) reboot - Done.
Is all rigth or i've forget some step?
TIA to all XDA!
Idk
You got it brother.
1. sdcard should be fat32,ext,swap
Oooo a big THANKS! to all!
Tia!

Weird soft "brick" help

Ok so last night when i flashed ace42's hero everything was going ok wasnt a slow hero but i wanted to go back to super D. My dumbasz forgot to nandroid and when i try to flash an rom it stays on the 1st splash screen i could acces recovery and bootloader so its not a hard brick. Ive tried every thing form reflashing the radio and spl to the bootloader and back. Shoooot i even tried using DREAIMG.Nbh and the stock cupcake but still nothing nada. Any ideas what could be wrong? Im using amons recovery 1.6.2 btw
did you try wiping? Usually after you do a nandroid/switchrom/bart it's best to wipe before you flash.
Try This:
Code:
Wipe Data/Factory Reset
Wipe Dalvik Cache
Wipe Ext Partition
Repair EXT
Flash New Rom
See if that doesn't help.

Can you fastboot the phone? If you can do that then I recommend flashing through fastboot a boot and system image of what was previously working.
Just a thought, but did you try flashing the HTC recovery first?
I just had this same problem. I did a complete wipe. then flashed DRC83_base_defanged.zip (found here: http://www.mediafire.com/?nymkxjmndzd)when it was done flashing I flashed cyanogens latest with no reboot in between. I am now back up and running.
Backup the contents of your FAT partition on your SDCARD to your computer.
Reformat you SDCARD.
Repartition the SDCARD using Amon_RA's recovery (ext3 or ext4 partiton).
Reboot back into recovery.
Wipe your data/dalvik-cache.
Restore all of your FAT content originally saved from your SDCARD.
flash the DRC83_base_defanged.zip and then CM rom immediately following.
plug your device into your computer (if it's not there already) and use ddms or adb shell logcat to get a logcat and see if it appears to be repeating if your phone doesn't boot then copy the logcat and post it here.
Good luck.

Flashing trouble

Okay, i've been having a problem where my device gets stuck at the g1 screen after i flash ANY rom, i've given each rom i've attempted to flash up to 10 minutes each, i have to resort to a battery pull and nan restore to get my phone working again, i've tried flashing roms on two different cards, both with the same horrible end. I've tried reformatting, repairing partition, and wipe wipe wipeing, but nothing seems to work. Any ideas?
my specs:
OS: im running cyanogen's donut (which i have a nan backup of)
SD: 4gb class 6
Radio: latest
SPL: Danger
Recovery: Amon_RA's
Ext3: 1000mb
swap: 32mb
what rom are you tryna flash ill help you out.?
for example if you want the new cm508 t4 then u gotta download the following in the listed order:
1. download & install the newest radio for your device
2. download & install the danger( aka deathspl )\
3. download & install the latest version of cyanogen for your device.
that easy bro. HERE is a gide a friend of mine put together for me and its acurate and current. although there are nomore file links so u have to search google or xda search for the needed files.
good luck.
Requested to be moved to Q&A because this is NOT Development.
okay i've been trying to flash any non ram hack donut and any eclair, none of them make it pass the g1 screen, i've tried everything i have all the correct specs and use the correct procedures but nothing works
i've tired
the latest superD
the latest superE
the stable cyan Eclair
Chomatic Eclair latest
and even though i have it backed up and when
i restore it it works, the cyanogen donut, which i
cannot wipe and flash

Why can't you wipe?
Do a fresh nandroid/bart backup of your current working system.
Backup your SDCARD FAT partition to your computer.
Reformat your SDCARD (completely, no ext partition or swap partition)
Make sure you have Amon_Ra 1.7.0 recovery installed
Restart your device in recovery.
Wipe data and dalvik-cache.
Repartition your sdcard
Convert ext2 to ext3
Convert ext3 to ext4 (optional)
Mount SDCARD from Recovery onto your computer.
Re-download your the rom that you want to install and gapps if applicable and place them on the root of your sdcard.
Safely remove the device from your computer
Unmount the SDCARD from the phone (may need a reboot)
Flash your desired rom (don't reboot yet)
Find ddms.bat in the tools folder with the AndroidSDK and run it.
Click logcat
Reboot your device and let it SIT and watch the logcat.
If it seems to stop for a long period of time highlight the lines at the bottom and save the file to your desktop. Open it to confirm that you have the log in your text file.
Upload it to pastebin and post the link in this thread for others to help you further.

[Q] data2ext: Rom to Rom

Hey my xda'ers. I apologize with the bombardment of questions i have recently, theyre all things i have looked into and couldnt find exactly what i needed.
Its an easy question for those who use data to ext.
I had to go back to my backup (stock rom) to update my prl. This was from CM7.03 with data2ext applied. In recovery i wiped data/fac reset., cache partion, format boot, cahche, data, system, and sd-ext (this part is what i might mis understood) But anyway. I did what i had to do then decided to flash an AOSP rom. So in recovery i did the exact same wipe as above. Flashed rom, gapps, and data2ext4 v4. I didnt partion my card cause i though it was already partioned from my CM rom when i did it then (correct?) so i booted in and ran all the commands i needed for data2ext4 and it didnt run down my internal memory. so i decided to partion my sd card (again) to see if that would fix, it did NOT.
So can anyone shed light on what i did wrong and if i need to format and start over!?
When you were running data2ext you were supposed to do a nand+ext backup first and then flashed the data2ext zip and then rebooted. Then you were supposed to boot back into recovery and only wipe data, cache & dev-cache and then flashed your sense rom of choice. After you updated pri/prl power down and reboot back into recovery and make a regular nand and reboot. Then boot back into recovery and wipe data, cache & dev-cache then restore your nand+ext you made and then flash the data2ext zip and reboot. When your running data2ext ext don't wipe the sd-ext it will more than likely result in bootloops and could make your nands useless. Also your partition you setup on your sd should still be there unless you reformatted your sd. So when you wiped the sd-ext you essentially wiped out your data2ext link. And as far as if you have to start over well you could try to restore your nand+ext if you made one and then flash the data2ext and reboot to see if it will. If not then yes. But when you get it all set back up just make a nand+ext backup and remember not to wipe the sd-ext.

Oh and you don't have to reformat your sd your partitions should still be there as long as you didn't reformat your sd. You can just flash a fresh copy of your rom and just resetup the data2ext mod. But remember to make a nan+ext backup. Also always remember when you do and nand+ext backup always flash the data2ext zip and reboot. Then go back into recovery and continue. Same with restoring a nan+ext always reflash the data2ext zip right after.

im using CW 3.0.2.8 and it doesnt say nand+ext, so i assume you use RA?
But i also assume CW backs up the ex if it exsits?
Edit: also you say flash it then reboot, then go back into recovery.
When i reboot do i need to enable it while im there, or just simply boot and go back to recovery?

yes, CWM automatically backs up ext.
Thanks Il Duce!
From which part are you flashing the data2ext zip from???? And my bad. I'm using Ra, I should have asked you what recovery you were using. The same applys. And thanks duce for the cwm info.
Root/Hack-Mod_Always *
From the rom i had enabled with? yes. Cause i dont know how to disable it haha
If you already have the mod enabled and you want to do a update the same applys. Roms, kernels, etc. And since cwm already backs up the ext, then after you do the nand just flash the zip and reboot. Same applys for an update for pri/prl. And to disable data2ext in terminal do this
Su
data2ext --disable
