Flashing trouble - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay, i've been having a problem where my device gets stuck at the g1 screen after i flash ANY rom, i've given each rom i've attempted to flash up to 10 minutes each, i have to resort to a battery pull and nan restore to get my phone working again, i've tried flashing roms on two different cards, both with the same horrible end. I've tried reformatting, repairing partition, and wipe wipe wipeing, but nothing seems to work. Any ideas?
my specs:
OS: im running cyanogen's donut (which i have a nan backup of)
SD: 4gb class 6
Radio: latest
SPL: Danger
Recovery: Amon_RA's
Ext3: 1000mb
swap: 32mb

what rom are you tryna flash ill help you out.?
for example if you want the new cm508 t4 then u gotta download the following in the listed order:
1. download & install the newest radio for your device
2. download & install the danger( aka deathspl )\
3. download & install the latest version of cyanogen for your device.
that easy bro. HERE is a gide a friend of mine put together for me and its acurate and current. although there are nomore file links so u have to search google or xda search for the needed files.
good luck.

Requested to be moved to Q&A because this is NOT Development.

Why can't you wipe?
Do a fresh nandroid/bart backup of your current working system.
Backup your SDCARD FAT partition to your computer.
Reformat your SDCARD (completely, no ext partition or swap partition)
Make sure you have Amon_Ra 1.7.0 recovery installed
Restart your device in recovery.
Wipe data and dalvik-cache.
Repartition your sdcard
Convert ext2 to ext3
Convert ext3 to ext4 (optional)
Mount SDCARD from Recovery onto your computer.
Re-download your the rom that you want to install and gapps if applicable and place them on the root of your sdcard.
Safely remove the device from your computer
Unmount the SDCARD from the phone (may need a reboot)
Flash your desired rom (don't reboot yet)
Find ddms.bat in the tools folder with the AndroidSDK and run it.
Click logcat
Reboot your device and let it SIT and watch the logcat.
If it seems to stop for a long period of time highlight the lines at the bottom and save the file to your desktop. Open it to confirm that you have the log in your text file.
Upload it to pastebin and post the link in this thread for others to help you further.

Question about going from Hero back to other Build (Apps2sd)

i am wanting to go from Hero back to a Cyanagen build and am wondering what do i need to do about my Apps on my sd when i set up hero. do i have to do the whole process over again? and if soo do i have to reformat the ext2 partition?
wipe if you are changing to cyanogen's build from hero.
your a2sd will be okay.
cyanogen's 3.4 with his new recovery image 1.2 with do all the work with the symlinks for a2sd.
all assuming you have the newest radio and spl.

so will mhy apps still run of sd or is there another step i have to do?
you're apps will still be on your sd.
in cyanogen's recovery press alt +f to recover ext file systems.
you should be good to go.
i would suggest to apply the fix permissions.sh fix will you are at it with a new fresh rom.

after i did that when i load up and get to the "set up" screen where u sign in to google, i have TONS of force closes pop up
did you wipe before flashing 3.4?
did you apply the fix permissions fix?
i typed fix permission in console, it went throught alot of permissions being fixed, but the same thing keeps happening when i reboot, a ****load of force closes pop up and i cant even go through the set up of my google account
I did the same thing to my boyfriends phone, hero ---> cyanogen's newest and have the same problem, it's still searching for HTC programs.
Any help or luck?
safest and surest way to do this is to...
if you have a2sd, backup to PC
reformat the sdcard to fat32
repartition with ext2/3
wipe
flash the new rom (cyanogen)
flash the new recovery (cyanogen)
apply fix permissions
see if it works. if so...
put back all the stuff you had on your sdcard from your PC
then reboot.
wait

Questions moving from Cyanogen to Super D

I haven't been able to find a guide of sorts for changing from Cyanogen 4.2.14.1 to a stable version of Super D. I know from searching that it requires the Danger SPL, which I do not have currently. If someone could point me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it Please don't flame me
Flash the radio in my sig. Then Haykuro's SPL in my sig.
The End.
Saw you already have the newest radio, just flash the spl then a rom if you are sure of the radio version.
radio and spl are most important and always make sure u do the radio first
Thanks for your replies! So, I assume I can flash both of these using Cyan's Recovery and 'apply any zip from sd card', etc or do I need to flash another recovery instead of cyan's. Do I have to wipe the device first or can I simply flash both of these followed by Super D? Also, I see in reading that some say to wipe my ext. I don't see that as an option in Cyan's Recovery. How would I go about that and if I do it, will I lose everything on my sd card? Right now I have a fat32, ext2, and linux-swap as my partitions.
The guide is in the Super D thread.
Ok, in reading...this is what I plan to do:
Download recovery-RA-dream-v1.5.2.img and rename to recovery.img
Download ota-radio-2_22_19_26I.zip
Download Danger SPL spl-signed.zip
Flash RA recovery, reboot
[Alt+W] Wipe
[Alt+2] Wipe SD:ext partition : Wipe the ext partition on your sdcard
Flash ota-radio-2_22_19_26I.zip
Flash spl-signed.zip
Flash Super D
1. Have I missed any steps?
2. If I Wipe SD ext partition, will I lose all the data on my SD Card??? Also, will it mean I have to repartition it?
Thanks!
Wiping ext will only delete the files on the ext partition, not the fat32. It also doesn't remove the partition, only the data.
You don't need to flash the radio again if the information in your sig is correct. (verify in about phone in settings)
I'm pretty sure you have to choose flash update.zip for the spl to flash properly. Remember, flashing the SPL deletes all the data from your phone so if you forget to boot into recovery after flashing it it will appear stuck at the G1 screen because there are no boot files yet.
Thanks evilkorn!! Ok. I just finished flashing the new RA Recovery and it went like butter. I reverified my radio and it's good to go. So, here are my final questions.
Before flashing the danger spl, do I have to wipe? Or can I skip it?
Based on your instructions, I will will rename the Danger SPL spl-signed.zip to "update.zip" and flash it from recovery.
Can I just remain in console at that point and flash Super D then do the final boot so I don't get stuck at the G1 screen?

[Q] Right way: backing up SD card when upgrading to new ROM+new SD card+APPS2SD

Hi dev's and other Android tweakers,
I'm familiar with most of the basics in (Android) phone upgrading (like backing up and installing new rom's, radios, recovery's, metamorphs etc), but soon I need to perform a quite complex upgrade procedure and I would like to have your experienced thoughts on the details.
The case, upgrading:
FROM
Cyanogenmod 6.0.0-N1 (FRF91)
(CM pershoot kernel 2.6.35.8 // radio 32.50.00.32H_5.12.00.08) -- yeah I know, may seem to you like stone age
4GB stock SD card
stock Froyo APPS2SD
Amon_RA recovery
TO
Cyanogenmod 7.0.2.1
new 16GB SD Card (microSD of course )
Darktremor APPS2SD (!!)
latest Clockworkmod Recovery
The upgrading path I've thought out so far:
1. Titanium Backup all apps+data and perform a SMS (text message) Backup
2. Copy all SD card contents to PC, of course including the TiB backup data (simple copy-paste in Windows Explorer)
3. Perform a Nandroid
4. full system, data & cache wipe of all partitions in Amon_RA
5. Factory reset
6. flash the latest Clockwordmod
7. swap SD cards, format new SD card to fat32 and creating an ext3 partition; all using Clockworkmod.
8. copy the images of Darktremor Apps2SD and CM7 to the newly formatted SD card (in recovery).
9. flash Darktremor Apps2SD
10. flash CM7 (preceded by an extra full wipe in Clockwork??)
11. flash Google Apps
12. (boot and test basics)
13. copy the SD card contents back from the PC and restore apps+data with TiB.
14. Move formerly "installed to SD card"-apps back to "internal storage" (which actually is the ext3 partition of course) since I have enough space now anyway.
My most important questions;
- Is this a preferable order of steps?
- Have I forgot something (radio?) ?
Thanks!
Wrong order in more than one place:
First step 3, then step 2 - otherwise your Nandroid isn't backed up on the PC.
Step 5 isn't doable and isn't needed - "Wipe all user data" >= "Factory reset".
Skip flashing Clockworkmod altogether - you don't need it to install CM7, if you want it - first install CM7 and then flash it from there, later.
Steps 10 and 11 before step 9 - otherwise you'll erase DT's Apps2SD with the ROM you're flashing. It needs to be flashed AFTER the ROM, not before.
After step 12, reboot to make DT's Apps2SD work.
My suggestion: backup User Apps+Data ONLY, no system data whatsoever - and set the system data again. The only system data safe for copying and moving to CM7 would be WiFi access points.
Thanks for the corrections
Factory reset (step 5) seemed obsolete to me as well, but Cyan recommends it somehow in the installation instructions (see http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/20115-cyanogenmod-7-for-the-nexus-one-v7021-25-april-2011/ ). Same goes for Clockworkmod Recovery. May work just as well with a half-year-old Amon_RA, but to be on the safe side, I'd rather use what is recommended by the ROM dev.
As for the backing up; I was indeed planning only to back up User Data+Apps, to prevent compatibility issues that could occur when backing up system data of another Android version.
Id recommend avoiding clockwork mod altogether.
Far too many issues that could lead to a suddenly wiped or unreadable SD card. Many users have had this happen to them already.

Your steps make it impossible to flash another recovery - since you have nothing to flash it with, unless you have unlocked bootloader, know how to use fastboot and have the image ready. If you want to do recovery exchange - which I don't suggest - do it while you're still running your old ROM.
Factory reset can be done during your steps, but it's not trivial - it should be done from bootloader, since the recovery doesn't have the option, AFAIK. The option is replaced by "Wipe ALL user data".
I was indeed planning to use fastboot (which I use regularly) to flash the recovery. However, since you all advise against changing recovery ROM (to Clockworkmod), I'll stay with Amon_RA.

Blue Dot Repartitions

Sorry if this was already posted, ive tried to search but i cant find anything useful
I bought a blue dot nook color and had put the latest clockwork mod and had put on cyanogen mod 7.1 rc. What i was told was that it shouldve repartitioned my internal space to 1 gigabyte data/apps and 5 gb for other data.
But i found that it was still 5 gb for data and 1 gb for media.
So i went and tried to flash a repartition zip i found from a website
mrm3.n et/nook-color-how-to-blue-dot-nook-color
so i rebooted and the cyanogen android on a skateboard just loops over and over again. I was pretty stupid for not backing it up before doing it.
so my question is, how can i fix this?I will appreciate the help
You DON'T have repartition in order to run CM7 on your 1.2 stock-ROM NC.
Repartition to 1G /data 5G /media is an option, in fact, I do 1.96G /data
Reference link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1094371
CWR/CM7 don't repartition on their own- you have to do that separately. Anyway it seems like your problem is that you did the repartition, but not the reformat.
Here's what you need to do:
1. Download the appropriate partition file and reformat file from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1094371
2. Put those files on your sdcard along with CM7. I'm assuming you've already burned the sdcard with a Clockwork image.
3. Boot into Clockwork, wipe data, cache, & dalvik cache
4. Flash the repartition zip, reboot into Clockwork
5. Flash the reformat zip
6. Flash CM7 & reboot
That should get you running again. Note that your nook will be wiped during the reformat, but not the sdcard.

[Q] STUCK A

got my nexus one week back.its rooted .it has rapassion recovery 2.2.1 and HBOOT v0.35.0017.i wated to try my hands on flashing.so i downloaded [ROM][2.1+3.0/2.3.3] Rev0lutioN v2.8 followed the steps wiped data, done partition swap size 0 and ext 1 1024 mb ,selct ext2 ext2,then ext3 ext 4.then flashed the rom from sd card .but on rebooting it is stuck @ NEXUS ONE X IMAGE .pls show me some way to flash sucessfully i can get back to that fastboot, recovery etc page by volume down and power button
i would dl this to sdcard and flash a couple times thru recovery before flashing rom. wipe dalvik and battery/rotation settings too
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/28338566/Extreme-wipe.zip
not wiping system can cause issues
assume you met ALL other rom requirements
also i don't reformat sdcard while in phone--use sdformatter
the first thing i do when i get stuck is pull battery and reboot--not sure if you tried that
thanks..i will try that...does it matter well i was trying to flash nand version may be that caused problem..one more help can u pls guide me to how to do 1gb ext4 partiton..or sugget me some stable sense version for nexus i can flash easily
if you are new as indicated by one week ownership, i would start out with cm7 stable roms from android development section
use the system wipe zip i provided
sounds like your card is already partitioned
best thing to do is read up in wiki and as much of rom thread you are going to flash, the op page has good info and i usually read last few dozen pages
if you flashed nand version, assume you flashed blackrose hboot and repartitioned
hboot to recommended sizes per op page link, if you did you will have to go back to stock hboot to flash cm7 or try sd version of rev rom
i had surgery and not feeling well tonite, let someone else come along to add to my posts
ken
feeling a bit better, here is quick answer
backup sdcard
i use sdformatter to format outside phone--full erase and size adj on
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/28338566/SDFormatter 2.0.mht
this ensures card is fully formatted--phone just does quicky
then put card back in phone and use amon ra to repartition card to 1gb ext 4 0 swap
seems you did those steps already
then copy sdcard data back to phone
